A Professor wants to build a Utopia and the plot switches from Clyde Burke to Harry Vincent ass the Shadow tries to track down heisters who escape in a boat after a ship robbery.
Clyde Burke, one of the Shadow's agents, is on a steamship. Clyde tries to send a message to the Shadow, but it never reaches him. The ship is attacked by a mob and people are killed. There is a shipment of gold that is taken, and the thieves make their get-away.
The rest of the novel involves Harry Vincent going to a small cove with few people there. There are three major characters; an artist, a professor, and a man that seems to want nothing to do with anyone else.
The professor wants to start some kind of Utopia and gives various lectures on it. People begin to disappear, though, and the Shadow has Harry find out what he can. The Shadow has his own run-ins with the thugs and there's a really heavy body count of crooks in this novel. There's no holding back on the part of the Shadow, either, as many of the crooks die during the various gun battles that take place.
It's a really good novel, with all that makes the Shadow good, including secret communications, people in danger, running gun-battles with crooks, and the Shadow's agents. Definitely worth reading.
When it comes to pulp heroes there are 2 or 3 great standouts and the Shadow is one of those. The stories are fast paced and action filled. The mystery just adds to the excitement. With his army of agents to help the Shadow never lets you down for a great read. Highly recommended
