This was a pretty fun book that mixed comedy, vampires, and a bit of gamelit. If that sounds interesting, then you'll probably enjoy this.
Character - 6/10, Plot - 7/10, Setting/Game Mechanics - 6/10, Writing - 7/10, Enjoyment - 6/10
Rather than go in-depth for each of the above categories, I think it's easier to compare how I felt during the first half of the book vs the last half. In the beginning, this was a 5-star read. I really enjoyed the humor, the premise, and the character interactions. Our MC is an ordinary, middle-aged family man who gets isekai'd into a fantasy world via a hero-summoning ritual. Things immediately take a rough turn when the summoners turn out to be vampires. They sacrifice Vincent in a demonic ritual that leaves him as a pseudo-vampire/ghoul. I really enjoyed the setup for the story and the opening act was 10/10 for me.
From there, things just slowly went downhill. I really wanted to enjoy the story, but it felt more like a summary of events than an actual story experience. So I struggled to maintain interest as the character moved forward from one exaggerated circumstance to the next, with minimal tension. New characters were introduced, but I didn't care much for any of them. The only ones given much attention were various teenage girl archetypes. The author lampshaded this fact often, but drawing attention to it didn't fix it. Things escalated in what felt like a non-linear fashion to the point that it was hard to believe anything mattered much.
By the end, I was wondering if this would turn into a 3-star read. I don't want to go on a rant about all the ways this didn't work for me, so I'll just leave it at that. Maybe I was just in the wrong mood for this book and wanted something a little more engaging.
All in all, it was a pretty quick read and the plot kept things moving. I would imagine people who like this book will really like it and others might end up feeling lukewarm, much like myself. Either way, it's worth picking up if it sounds interesting to you.
