The Vampire Vincent #1

Death Loot & Vampires

Rate this book
No Romance. No Harem. Just Vampires.

Becoming a knockoff Dracula in tight leather pants was never part of Vincent’s plans. Neither was being summoned to another world by a cult of vampire wannabes. But both happened.

Now Vincent’s left picking up the tattered pieces of his humanity as he tries to grow strong enough to keep his family safe. There’s a world filled with nightmares, and the looming threat of losing his soul standing between his goal and his reality, so it’s not like it will be too hard or anything.

Hell should tremble.

A good man is going to war.

This was way funnier than I expected. A guy is isekaied as a hero only to find himself in a vampire nest and made a vampire. Only, because he hasn't killed an innocent, he hasn't lost his soul so he isn't technically evil. Not entirely. So no smiting by the clerics. He still suffers some vampire traits like lessened emotional load (both good and bad) and the Curse of Sloth that prevents vampires from taking over the world.

And then his son shows up to kill the evil nest because it turns out Vincent's entire family was isekaied in the same event. Only they all got much better deals, including the son being a big damn hero. They fight, they argue, they bond because Vincent was a good dad and continues to care about his family. And the plot takes off from there.

I enjoyed this very much. Vincent is very nearly evil, but only barely but not quite. He's supremely pragmatic, but since his entire motivation is making the kingdom safe for his family, that pragmatism is bent towards eliminating evil and spreading good. I question some of his choices that seemed like they had too little foundation and like the author had his thumb on the scale, but I ended up not caring about that very much.

No, the reason this was such a stand-out for me was the humor. A lot of which is decidedly dad humor. But not all. There were vivid characters and the humor drew down from them as much as anything else. And the occasional heartwarming moments just serve to highlight all the fun times.

I'm going with four solid stars for being so engaged and laughing so much. Seriously, so much. The author has my permission to contrive around the occasional plot corner just as long as the heart of this stays as warm and funny as it does here.

A note about Chaste: Vincent is married and still cares for his wife, even though she has moved on in the ten years he slept. They don't meet, so there's no real temptation to sex and Vincent says at one point that vampires "aren't sexual creatures" which totally makes sense considering their life cycle. So there no sex, only one very tender hug, and that's it. It's very chaste.

Overall not really a fan for a few reasons. Full disclosure I dropped it at about 80%. So if something changed in that last 20% please let me know.

1) I’m just not a fan of the whole OP MC trope. I know this about myself but every time I come across it, I’m shocked by just how much it bothers me. I didn’t know this was that kind of story when I started it.

From the moment Vincent steps on the scene he was the smartest most capable person that we’ve ever seen. He’s out thinking and out maneuvering people who’s been adventuring and fighting for all their lives (this includes the 1000 year old Lich) just cause he’s the super smart vampire that’s immediately good at anything he does. He perfectly predicts any and everything, everything he does is easily successful, all his followers are immediately god tier and he just seems perfect in every conceivable way(i guess the whole curse of the sloth thing was meant to counter that somhow?) No tension and no stakes, I don’t understand what people find fun about that.

I audible groaned out loud when he knocked out his hero son (who’s been doing this for 10 years) to go handle the lich himself. I hate when series make it seem like the only person who can do anything is the main character and everyone else is there to be protected and have their hand held. Even his familiars becoming God tier only adds to the fact that everything he touches turns to Gold.

2) Not enough action. There was a quick action skirmish at the beginning then nothing for 200 pages, then another quick fight then nothing for a long time and etc etc. They spent more time talking about the magic and developing skills, magic and armor then actually using said skills, magic and armor. It was baffling. We had plenty opportunities for epic fights too, the author just purposely chose to skim or skip over it. I get not everyone loves action as much as me but I genuinely feel this was excessive for this genre.

3) Vincent himself didn’t work for me overall. A part of that is the OP nature of his existence but the other part of it is the whole unfeeling immoral vampire thing. I don’t get how that’s supposed to make people like and root for him. I get his thing with his family(and puppies I guess) makes him sort of endearing but even that will only take you so far especially when he only interacted with Luke.

It’s funny cause he kind of reminded me of Jason from He who fights monsters. In fact the whole book did. I think the author is a big fan of that series

The way he treated Angelica was off putting to me too. I get she was in a cult and might not have been a great person but seeing him use and abuse her and literally take away her free will was jarring and my dislike of him grew more and more. I getthe feeling their relationship was supposed to come across as funny but I just don’t get how.

It’s weird cause Vincent was funny at first but as the book went on that part of his personality became less and less frequent. Every once in awhile he would make a joke but by a certain point it just wasn’t enough to offset everything else

I had similar complaints about the morality of the protagonist from A journey of Black and Red. I’m not saying I need my protagonist to be the paragon of goodness, but I think there’s wide gulf from that and these vampires.

Ultimately I think there’s a reason Vampires are usually the villains of the story and not the Heros.

Sorry for the negative review but I’m just disappointed.

This is a good book from an author I am really starting to like. His style is fun and entertaining. His pop culture references are on point and don't seem forced or overdone. Guy is summoned to a new world as a hero. He is immediately beaten up, chained, drained of blood and used for a ritual to summon vampires. He ends up being drained of blood and turned into a vampire himself. He is imprisoned for 33 days before an adventure team shows up to eliminate the threat. Overall an excellent read

I read this when it was on Royal Road. It’s probably more like 4 stars for me but I’m bumping it up because I read the whole thing and enjoyed it and at this point I can’t remember any real problems I had with it since I didn’t review it when I read it.

In fact, the only problem I do remember was constantly having to tell myself that the title refers to death loot and vampires, not death and loot and vampires, and thus is not missing a comma. And by constantly, I mean Every. Single. Time. I saw the title.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to the next book.

This was a pretty fun book that mixed comedy, vampires, and a bit of gamelit. If that sounds interesting, then you'll probably enjoy this.

Character - 6/10, Plot - 7/10, Setting/Game Mechanics - 6/10, Writing - 7/10, Enjoyment - 6/10

Rather than go in-depth for each of the above categories, I think it's easier to compare how I felt during the first half of the book vs the last half. In the beginning, this was a 5-star read. I really enjoyed the humor, the premise, and the character interactions. Our MC is an ordinary, middle-aged family man who gets isekai'd into a fantasy world via a hero-summoning ritual. Things immediately take a rough turn when the summoners turn out to be vampires. They sacrifice Vincent in a demonic ritual that leaves him as a pseudo-vampire/ghoul. I really enjoyed the setup for the story and the opening act was 10/10 for me.

From there, things just slowly went downhill. I really wanted to enjoy the story, but it felt more like a summary of events than an actual story experience. So I struggled to maintain interest as the character moved forward from one exaggerated circumstance to the next, with minimal tension. New characters were introduced, but I didn't care much for any of them. The only ones given much attention were various teenage girl archetypes. The author lampshaded this fact often, but drawing attention to it didn't fix it. Things escalated in what felt like a non-linear fashion to the point that it was hard to believe anything mattered much.

By the end, I was wondering if this would turn into a 3-star read. I don't want to go on a rant about all the ways this didn't work for me, so I'll just leave it at that. Maybe I was just in the wrong mood for this book and wanted something a little more engaging.

All in all, it was a pretty quick read and the plot kept things moving. I would imagine people who like this book will really like it and others might end up feeling lukewarm, much like myself. Either way, it's worth picking up if it sounds interesting to you.

The cover put me off and kept me from starting it.

I'm glad I listened and read the book. Super entertaining. Another great start to a series by Benjamin Kerei.

Damn Good

This is a very similar story to Unorthodox Farming, set in a nearly identical world. Instead of being forced into farming, this other guy is turned into a vampire on day one.
The humor is much the same as well.
Look, If you liked Oh Great! I was Reincarnated as a Farmer, then you are gonna love this.
I might have liked this one a shade more.

**** 2 Year Update ****
I've now read this book more than three times now, and it gets a little better each time. Reading this is such a joy. The pacing, the comic timing, the delivery. I'm endlessly impressed but how carefully plotted the whole thing is while maintaining a feeling of spontaneity and improvisation.
This book compares favorably with Terry Pratchett. I mean that both literally, and as a compliment.

This is by far one of the best books I have read in a long while. It was incredibly addictive and absolutely hilarious. My advice is to just read it, it's worth it no matter what kind of books you like.

Amazing

This is the best of 100+ books so far this year. Held me enthralled from start to finish and can't wait for the next one.

This is the Kerei from that first farmer's book.

The irreverence, the character interaction, the overall kingdom setting, this has it all. This is good, and I sincerely hope it continues as is in book two.

Book one

This is another story off of Royalroad. If it wasn't for the reviews I saw for this story I would have missed an excellent read.
Like dragons I have an intense dislike for vampires. Some that glitter in the sun ruined them for me.
However the dialogue on the very first page drew me in, and the story never turned me loose.
I wouldn't call the MC a vampire. He is one overpowered undead, but I don't think he ever drank any blood.
I was tickled by his love for loot. Would have enjoyed a deeper look at said loot.
I liked the way the MC interacted with other characters.

9/10 I hunger for book two to start. This surpassed my every expectation.

Six Stars?!?

If you have ever played Vampire: The Masquerade, buy this book. If you like vampires, buy this book. If you like heroes, buy this book. If you like good stories and simple systems (or even just the former), buy this book.
In fact, you know what? Buy this book. Please.

KU Review

This was so fun. I avoided it for a bit because vampires can be pretty cliché in stories. I apologize for judging a book by its cover. MC was an amazing Everyman with an attitude I’d like to think I’d share in a similar situation. Great story.

General disclaimer: I want to be clear in that I do not factor cost into any review and as such, this is simply a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.

This one has a lot of potential (it's interesting from the very beginning - a rare accomplishment) and there were some great things to like in the book, but it also dragged in several sections and it was missing the satisfying progression elements that make the best books in this genre hard to put down. The MC was massively OP from the very beginning and although he does technically progress, it makes no meaningful impact on what he's capable of. Also, since he's a vampire, he's kind o psychotic emotionally (with a few exceptions), which makes it hard to feel a connection with him. He sort of comes across like a powerful robot that's programmed to protect his family.

I'll check out the next one when it comes out, I'm curious where Kerei can take the story from here.

Look, this is well written. Plenty of action and adventure. But the main character is an absolute WANKER. It was mildly amusing at first but had long ceased to be so by the end. If you don’t find that infuriating then you’re going to have a jolly old time, I expect.

I loved, Oh Great, I was Reincarnated as a Farmer. The first book was great, and the second book was decent too.

Now we have a vampire book. Vincent is the MC and he's portaled to a new world and ends up in a coven of vampires who suck him dry. Except he doesn't die. He also doesn't kill an innocent person. That becomes the crux of the story.

As it turns out, Vincent's entire family is here. His son Luke is a hero, and his wife is working far away. Meanwhile, Vincent is coming to grips as to what it means to be a vampire. He's stronger, faster, and better at killing than even his son. Once they team up the goal is to destroy a lich who's taken over a town for herself.

I'll stop the recap there. The story is fine and there are a good number of laughs. This book isn't as funny as the author's previous books, but I had no problem with that. There is plenty of action to keep the story moving forward, and Vincent has a charm all his own. The only other thing I'll mention is that he sometimes takes too long to get things done.

The editing is good, and I am looking forward to book two. 5/5* Recommended.

Solid leveling smut

Levels, check
Special abilities nobody else has, check
Isekai, check
A plot where things rarely go wrong, check
When things go wrong they get fixed quickly, check

Solid light read but would be really nice to have something more serious from this author as his leveling ideas are really interesting despite being gained by small trials described as big. Also pacing is so so goes really fast but maybe I'm a fast reader, Kachow.

I don't think this was a bad book and I will most likely continue the series. But it felt like I wasn't the target audience. Which is weird, cause I like vampires, humour and RPG. It was just difficult to care for the main character. The audiobook narrator was great I'd say. He managed to change his voice into believable characters which helped with immersion. I think the rating would have been higher if I read this on a different day. 🦇🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏼‍♀️💰

I loved this book. Very few books that I have read have made me bust out laughing like this one has, without feeling like it's trying too hard the writing is brilliant. The story is also really good some part did feel somewhat rushed, but besides that, it's a homerun for sure. I definitely will be checking out the next book.

Wow phenomenal.

Ok this is one of the best books I have read in quite sometime and I read over 200 a year. So nice to read a story with an intelligent MC that isn't afraid or unable to do what needs doing. I'm looking forward to the next book it can't come soon enough! 6\5 stars

Funny and a bit weird. Having the characters access their character sheets and level up in the actual story was a very different approach that was actually very entertaining and played well into the plot of the book. I laughed out loud more than once!

Naive but cute.

Best suited for teenagers.

It was too super easy to become an ancient vampire for my taste. The protagonist is too OP from the early pages on and seems to learn everything in an instant. I am no fan of the concept "my entire family got summoned to another world to be heroes".

Excellently written; well-paced; diverse characters; plenty of action; magic system that gets elaborated on; meaningful stats and levels and classes.

This really is a cut above most profession fantasy in terms of writing quality and balancing all the story elements.

NO SPARKLES!!!

…and now I gush.

This was amazing. Moments of humor, awesome battle, practical planning…it had everything except werewolves. And gnomes, I don’t remember gnomes.

There were several tongue-in-cheek references to other books (vampire accountants was my favorite Easter egg).

This is worth a RE-read. That’s my recommendation.

The writing of this book was engaging enough for me continue it to the end, but it had the LITRPG flaw that most people resent the most. The main character started out and finished extremely overpowered. There wasn't much dramatic tension or hint of a chance of possible failure. This would have been better as a superhero comic book. The elements of a potentially cool magic system were there, but the MC was so overpowered that it almost didn't matter what skills he had.

If you want a well-written series with an extremely unlikeable MC in an amazing world, try the Thomas Covenant series. If you want a funny LITRPG done right, try Dungeon Crawler Carl. If you want an un-killable hero, read some Superman comics. If you just want vampires, there are too many better novels to list... maybe try the Sookie Stackhouse books.

Despite the negative tone of this review, there was obviously enough good about it for me to finish it. I don't usually finish terrible books, so this was at least decent. It just wasn't good enough for me to recommend it.

Review key: 1 star = DNF and badly written; 2 star = DNF; 3 star = finished it, but probably won't reread; 4 star = good enough to reread; 5 stars = good enough to reread multiple times

Just as good the second time.

I didn’t recognize this title as one I had already read when I first downloaded it from Kindle Unlimited. I previously read it on Royal Road and loved it then.

I just finished rereading/listening to the audible version and still loved it.

I’ll be looking forward to the next one.
