I enjoyed this book so much that it's made my list of all-time favorite mysteries. It's the third installment in Vicki Lane's brilliantly written series starring the intelligent, likable, down-to-earth Elizabeth Goodweather, and the best so far.

In addition to fascinating, well-portrayed characters, an absorbing, complex storyline, authentic-sounding dialogue, and a beautiful, vividly described setting in the North Carolina Appalachians, I found the narrative so richly textured that despite my eagerness to find out what happened next, I kept rereading parts of it because they resonated so strongly for me.

There are flashbacks to the childhood of two of the characters, both girls, and their rich fantasy life in which they are Cherokee Indians, evoking memories of my own childhood. And I loved the references to some of my favorite children's books, such as The Chronicles of Narnia, The Dark Is Rising, the Oz books, and The Hobbit, along with thoughts on Dorothy L. Sayers' Gaudy Night and Robert A. Heinlein's Glory Road.

I've never been to North Carolina or the Appalachians, but the detailed portrayal of the region and the lifelike, non-stereotypical characters in this series make me feel as if I have. This book can be read on its own, but I strongly recommend reading the previous two books first, so you can get to know the characters first.

This author is hard to find, but since I had read two others, I order the next 3 in the Elizabeth Goodweather series. This character is sort of an Appalachian Jessica Fletcher. She is a widow, managing a small farm, supporting herself selling vegetables, herbs, and artistic natural wreathes. Her nephew, two grown daughters, and a love interest add to the cast. She gets involved in old crimes and new, with wonderfully drawn neighbors to add spice to the stories. I will read the next two, and I understand she has a new one out as well.

This mystery is deeply engrossing and disturbing. It’s full of buried secrets from the past seemingly digging their way out of forgotten graves. It has the usual beautiful setting in North Carolina, rendered eerie by unexplained happenings. There’s a dandy of a red herring that kept me fooled for several chapters as well.

Good mystery. In fact, two good mysteries. What happened to Maythorn Blackfox on Halloween 1986? And what is the reason that people from her dead husband's past are showing up and inserting themselves in her present?

I have enjoyed the whole series so far. Vicki Lane writes well.

The Elizabeth Goodweather series just gets better and better. As set up in the previous book, Art's Blood, Elizabeth's daughter Rosemary feels she must at long last discover the truth behind the disappearance of a childhood playmate. At the same time, Elizabeth's new love, Philip Hawkins, a Navy buddy of her late husband Sam, has a secret -- and one that he fears may affect their relationship. Parts of this story are "ripped from the headlines" and given Vicki Lane's own special twist, and parts are informed by the ancient history of the Cherokee. The resolutions to the mystery/thriller are as satisfying as they are unexpected. Vicki Lane writes about Appalachia and its people, new and old, with a clear and empathetic eye. Highly recommended.

I read the first two books in this series years ago. I am pleased to discover she has continued with the series! Although it seems I may be going on an adventure to locate the other books in this series. I love the rustic setting of this series. Also this particular book had 2 main plots going at the same time, which can sometimes be overwhelming, but Lane did a great job of intertwining the 2. Very interesting story with an ending I did not expect.

I'm partial to stories that take place in Appalachia, and I'm partial to crime fiction, so you'd think I'd really like this author's work. This is the first in this series I've read, and sad to say I don't feel compelled to read more. Just OK. However, the author's knack for recreating colloquial dialogue made me homesick.
