Provides an overview of an important artist's life. Assisted by photographs of Warhol and examples of his most well-known works, this work explains how Warhol went from humble beginnings to becoming the arbiter of cutting-edge pop culture.
Susan Goldman Rubin is the author of more than forty-five books for young people, including Andy Warhol: Pop Art Painter; The Yellow House: Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin Side by Side; and Edward Hopper: Painter of Light and Shadow. A long-time instructor in the UCLA Extension Writers Program, Susan Goldman Rubin lives in Malibu, California.
Andy Warhol: Pop Art Painter is a short, well-researched, and visually engaging biography about Andy Warhol, a leading figure in the pop art movement.
In addition to being intrigued by the subject of this biography, I also loved the simple, engaging writing, numerous photographs and reproductions of Andy Warhol’s artwork, a detailed timeline, and a useful glossary.
However, the biography felt somewhat incomplete. Although many interesting events in Andy Warhol's later life were briefly mentioned in the timeline, the main text ended somewhere in the 1960s. From the timeline we learn that in 1968 Andy Warhol got shot by a radical feminist, was pronounced dead, but eventually revived. In 1970, his mother became senile, suffered two strokes, and moved into a nursing home, where Andy Warhol didn't visit her until her death two years later. In 1987, Andy Warhol unexpectedly died from the complications after a routine gallbladder operation. Wow, I wish these events were covered in more detail...
Anyways, here are my favorite Andy Warhol's works featured in Andy Warhol: Pop Art Painter:
Living Room, 1946-1947.
Butterflies, 1955.
Endangered Species: Bald Eagle (Haliatus Leucocephalus), 1983.
This biography felt like two books in one. The descriptions and stories of his life and career are wonderfully presented and completely brings Andy Warhol to life for the reader. The second part of the book is a timeline capsule of the years of his life. Frankly, both descriptive options worked, but I would have preferred a more story like description of his adult years. The man had an amazing life with details (didn't see his mother for two years and she dies, he was shot-died-and was brought back, published his own magazine)that really make the reader want to know more.
i wanted to be convinced that warhol had something to say or to add as an artist. not according to this book. rubin writes an interesting biography finishing it circa 1965 then adds a ten page timeline to the end of the book. he was shot? didn't see his mother for two years? dies from a gall bladder operation, why? where? this could have been a great and interesting book.
This is an informative and interesting look into the life of avant-garde Pop Artist Andy Warhol. The layout it done well and the information focuses on Andy’s youth to iconic status, the photographs, art and quotes are beautifully displayed on bright bold colorful pages.
A fun and funky picture book biography about the artist Andy Warhol. He was a VERY unique guy and everybody wanted to hang out with him at his Factory.
