Christian Jacq is a French author and Egyptologist. He has written several novels about ancient Egypt, notably a five book suite about pharaoh Ramses II, a character whom Jacq admires greatly.
Jacq's interest in Egyptology began when he was thirteen, and read History of Ancient Egyptian Civilization by Jacques Pirenne. This inspired him to write his first novel. He first visited Egypt when he was seventeen, went on to study Egyptology and archaeology at the Sorbonne, and is now one of the world's leading Egyptologists.
By the time he was eighteen, he had written eight books. His first commercially successful book was Champollion the Egyptian, published in 1987. As of 2004 he has written over fifty books, including several non-fiction books on the subject of Egyptology.
He and his wife later founded the Ramses Institute, which is dedicated to creating a photographic description of Egypt for the preservation of endangered archaeological sites.
Between 1995-1997, he published his best selling five book suite Ramsès, which is today published in over twenty-five countries. Each volume encompasses one aspect of Ramesses' known historical life, woven into a fictional tapestry of the ancient world for an epic tale of love, life and deceit.
Jacq's series describes a vision of the life of the pharaoh: he has two vile power-hungry siblings, Shanaar, his decadent older brother, and Dolora, his corrupted older sister who married his teacher. In his marital life, he first has Isetnofret (Iset) as a mistress (second Great Wife), meets his true love Nefertari (first Great Wife) and after their death, gets married to Maetnefrure in his old age. Jacq gives Ramesses only three biological children: Kha'emweset, Meritamen (she being the only child of Nefertari, the two others being from Iset) and Merneptah. The other "children" are only young officials trained for government and who are nicknamed "sons of the pharaoh".
This book kind of reminds me of - for lack of a better comparison - a heart monitor with a screen that shows evenly spaced peaks and valleys: CRISIS...crisis averted...CRISIS...crisis averted...CRISIS...crisis averted...and so on and so forth throughout the entire story. Unfortunately this translates into repetitiveness to the point of being predictable. The suspense is there, but it never lasts for more than 10 pages. Granted, there is somewhat of a surprise in store at the very end of the book, but even that is treated with nothing more than an "Oh well, the Brotherhood must survive at all cost". I would call it quits here, but I purchased the entire series as a set at the used bookstore. So I guess I'm off to read the 4th and final installment.
While Jacq is extremely knowledgeable about the time period, throughout all his books, all the characters are extremely formal. The characters have wants and dreams, but they speak so seriously. It would be nice to hear a person crack a joke. I sometimes feel like I'm reading Egyptian Shakespeare instead of a modern novel. I think this becomes the biggest criticism of his work, which is otherwise quite gorgeous and remarkable.
But there is a coin flip to this... what I love about his work is how alive the culture feels. Details are rich. He makes the society come alive more than any other author has with this time period. Everything about the culture makes sense too. Explanations for rituals and beliefs are clear. Yet, even with spiritual magic interwoven in the book, I feel like I'm reading about a living society as the cultural depth is as deep as an ocean! Its so strange that the overall feel of the culture is so immense and then to come against a wall reading the stoic characters and their lines.
I do see character depth. They will make me smile or get frustrated, and I sense personality to a degree. But theres not a lot of personal depth. The character of Tausert is quite different in this book than when we first met her. I wanted more of her development. I also wanted more about what happened to Amenmessu's mother and how Tausert became queen. Amenmessu felt like a cardboard cutout versus a true character. I wanted more of the family dynamic between Amenmessu and Tausert and why he hates her so much.
A LOT happens in Jacq's stories from plots against the builders to natural disasters to clashes between workers. I'm always kept interested. Its a complex plot that does not read as such. And the ending... wow... I did not think Jacq would go there! Usually, the villains hatch a plot, get excited, count their chickens, but then are thwarted by some divine or character intervention. But this time... they actually succeeded! I did not expect it. But I am glad Jacq did it because I really felt no weight to the villain's schemes. And what a blow to start book 4 with! Cannot wait to pick up the next book!

A work of fiction written by one of France's best known Egyptologists, Christian Jacq's book is set in uncertain times during Egypt's Nineteenth Dynasty.
Its heroes are the craftsmen of Deir el-Medina (dubbed the Place of Truth). The Stone of Light itself is a mysterious stone which gives life to the village.
While the craftsmen grapple with a traitor in their midst of the village, King Seti II tries to deal with his rebellious son Amenmes. In the meantime, a wicked general Mehi attempts to steal the magical stone.
It is the third book in the series and one of the best.
Nemôže predsa prísť o svoje miesto a vplyv! Hmm... ktovie, čo by to len mohlo znamenať...? Na konci okrem toho "nečakane" umiera Seti II. (pričom Amenmes zomrie asi v poslednej tretine) a na trón nastupuje Siptah, nenápadný, veľmi múdry a politickými predstaviteľmi neovplyvniteľný kráľovský pisár, s ktorým bude vládnuť manželka Setiho II. Tausert.
Maravilloso.
Another series from Christian Jacp. This series of for tells the story of the craftsmen and women of ancient egypt who designed and built the tombs for the kings and queens of egypt. They follow the main character Paneb from his first innitiation into the order as a young man and his subsequent rise within the society. A lot of insight to the stuggle for power, greed, and over human nature both good and bad. also a lot of action, as well as thoughts on the idea of power of nature on humanity as well as inanimate objects.
Cool plot, but it’s notorious that the author, besides of being a good Egyptologist, is a lustful man, cuz he describes a lot of explicit sexual scenes. Though it helps you know a lot of Egypt, it’s still filthy
