This review can also be found on my blog.

Reasons to doubt him seemed infinite, but my desire to trust Sam had a heartbeat of its own now.

I don’t know whether to hug my Kindle close to my chest or fling it across the room. An Eye For Danger was exciting, thrilling, swoon worthy, and had me biting my nails and gasping in anger or surprise from beginning to end. The suspense portion of the story with all the evasive maneuvers while the hero and heroine are running for their lives made me think of The Pelican Brief. I spent all day reading this book and only reluctantly put it down long enough to make dinner.

The story begins with Jules’ jog through the park. Immediately we’re made very well aware just how difficult such a simple task is for her. Jules suffers from PTSD, not just from her experiences as a war photographer, but from the car bomb that took the life of her fiance three years ago. Since then she has kept herself holed up in her apartment, living like a hermit. But with her usual dogwalker/dogsitter out of town, she’s forces to take her only friend and constant companion, Max, for a walk. That’s when she stumbles upon a crime in progress. She manages to save an injured man from being shot in cold blood, but now she has a target on her back. And then she unwittingly stumbles across Sam, the injured man. Instead of thanking her, he holds her hostage. But why would a man claiming to be the good guy, a cop, scare the living daylights out of her?

From there the story really gets rolling when Sam manages to track her down and slip into her apartment. Even though she should be afraid of him, her instinct is to help him and try to get some answers. When another attempt is made on her life, she turns to the one man she doesn’t fully trust. He won’t tell her the truth about how she’s somehow mixed up in his undercover operation for fear her knowledge could get her into even more trouble. With a murderer on her heels, and a steely cop trying to charm his way into her life, she doesn’t know who is friend or foe. But Sam has caught a glimpse into her soul, and she in his. It may not be wise, but she has no choice but to put her life in his hands repeatedly.

Jules was a great heroine, even if I wanted to shake her a few times. She’s a broken woman, haunted by all the horrors she’s captured via the lens of her camera – pain, suffering, and death. Witnessing the violent death of her fiance shattered her already fragile state and put a halt on her dreams. It’s no wonder she had an aversion to violence. But all the trauma didn’t seem to inhibit her sass or stubbornness one bit. Some of the quips she lobs back and forth with Sam were the many highlights of the book. I may not have agreed with all of her actions regarding Stone, but in her shoes, they seemed plausible. Doesn’t mean I forgive her for a few of her decisions.

Sam. Sigh. A real conundrum. On the surface he’s sexy, motivated, smart and caring. But deep down he’s nearly as broken as Jules. Undercover work has really done a number on him, and add to the fact that he may have traitors among his own ranks – that just sucks the life right out of someone like him. However his unwavering determination to see his mission through makes him a little crazy but very honorable. A hero even. But even someone like him also has personal secrets and demons. Either fate is cruel or has a sense of humor for throwing him and Jules together. Could two broken people find the will to live again, either because or in spite of each other?

Their chemistry was there from the very beginning, and it drove me a little crazy with their near misses. But they felt right for a relationship that was blossoming under their circumstances. It felt like it was born more out of respect or admiration rather than just crazy lust at first sight. That made me like them even more because their push and pull felt and sounded real, believable. He didn’t take advantage of her vulnerability, nor did she seek to forget her past in his arms. They had so many great moments both good and bad, but I felt like they both went on one hell of a journey and came out stronger on the other side.

As for the story as a whole, I can only attribute my rapt attention on page after page to the fantastic dialogue and writing skills of Ms Fairchild. The dialogue witty, sarcastic, caustic, emotional, but the conversations never stalled. Descriptions of situations or the world around them were filled with details, sights, sounds, smells. I also loved the fact that I could never put my finger on who was good or bad. The game kept changing, taunts and hints were dropped that made me constantly change alliances. The author also knows how to write really twisted villains. I’ll just say there was a scene towards the end that made my heart pound. This story was an emotional roller coaster, but one I’d gladly hop on again for the thrill of the ride. If you love reading romantic suspense with an edge, you won’t want to pass this book up.

Favorite quotes/moments:
“Best part about you, Jules. Despite all this, you came through for a complete stranger. A homicidal maniac for all you know. yet you break your back to prop me up. Risked your life to save me and Max. But one song and you collapse. You’re either a rock of Gibraltar or a house of cards.”
“Either you’re gunning for punishment, or begging for salvation. I don’t know which. But it’s hell to watch.”

“Go ahead.” He grabbed my fist, set it in the middle of his chest. “Hit me. I got it coming. Hard as you can, Jules.” He slammed my fist against healthy skin. “Hit me damn it. Get angry for once. You can’t break me, Jules. You might even feel better. Christ, even I’ll feel better.”
Why the hell didn’t I throttle him?
“At least throw something,” he said. “Maybe not the cast iron.”

“Maybe the first time,” Sam continued, “we fall for the who we want people to be.”
“But not who they really are,” I said automatically.

No lie, this book rocked. Little to no editing flaws, spelling or grammar issues (which, honestly, I've come to expect in e-books; almost all of them are horribly edited) and a well polished story from beginning to end. It leaves the end open for the next book, leaving the reader tingling for the next book, without dangling you on the edge of a cliff hanger (which is great, because cliff hangers are like boogers: unacceptable but sometimes unavoidable). I completely adored how well Sam was written; he's a total guy. No major gushy romance novel stereotype; just sweet and horny and definitely the jealous type. I can't wait for the next book. Whatever happened with Howard and Houston? What's with the matching bracelets on Vilet's team? How deep is this conspiracy?!? Loved it. Highly recommend it.

And wow, Stone really needs a short trip in a long car. What a prick. Whew.

Previous reviewers have described the book so I'll share my thoughts.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first 75-80 percent read in two days. The plot twists and surprises kept me going at high speed until the last quarter where I began to burn out and had to set it aside for awhile to let my brain slow down.

The flawed but very likable characters Sam and Julie were well developed. The dialogue was suitable to the characters, often witty, sarcastic and emotional, always pertinent and consistent to the character. The many peripheral characters made it hard to follow at times. Regrettably, many of those killed on the way were the nice guys.

All said, Ms Fairchild's first tautly written fiction is impressive. She wrote on her blog that she had burned out toward the end of the project. I can see why. Nevertheless, her readers won't want to wait too long for the next in the Goliath Conspiracy series and to read more about Sam, Julie and Max.

This book was only okay for me. Typical editing errors like missing or incorrect words drive me nuts. Why do they not have people editing these things?? Though I've seen worse, it is still annoying. As far as the book goes, it was really only okay. Unnecessarily long and drawn-out plot. I wanted to smack Julie most of the time, which didn't help. Some of the conversation was kind of humorous, which is why I gave the book 2 stars at least. The story-telling could have been smoother. Very choppy at times. I've read worse, but I've definitely read much, much better. I have no interest in reading a second book in this series.

This was an extremely complicated, action filled story with a fantastic hero and a fascinating if not always likable heroine. Jules can be capable one moment and the next, make a silly decision based on emotion the next. Sam is a good match for her, being a little more grounded although he has plenty of baggage, and possessing a really sensitive soul. There's a ton of gun battles, explosions, betrayals, and violence so obviously an exciting story is taking place while Jules and Sam find love. Seems like there will be a sequel (?) If so I would read it!

I was surprised that the book was so big to be honest. I thought it would be resolved a lot quicker but more elements were added in.

I got a bit sick of the lack of communication between Jules and Sam and I skimed those passages nearer the end.

I liked the concept and want to see what happens next!

A truly compelling read, Christine Fairchild has created a relatable character in Jules, who is struggling with her PTSD and is forced to push herself to her limits when mystery guy Sam enters her life. This is an action-packed, romance-filled page-turner that I could not put down.

4.5 stars. Excellent romantic suspense tale about a war photographer with PTSD and a man she's not sure she can trust. Journalist Julie Larson goes for a jog in Central Park and stumbles into the middle of a murder in progress. When one of the men involved takes her hostage, she finds that the man is actually trying to protect her from the other man involved in the murder. He lets her go, but shows up later at her apartment badly injured and in need of help. She reluctantly assists him, and as they get to know each other, she learns that he is not exactly what he seems... nor is the handsome police detective who keeps nosing around.

When the murderer from the park makes another attempt on her, and she is saved by the intervention of her mystery man, Julie learns that she's stumbled into a vast conspiracy, and her only hope to survive it is to trust a man who refuses to tell her the full truth for fear of what will happen to her if she knows.

I really enjoyed this book. Tight writing, twists and turns galore, characters who were well-fleshed out and real. I don't normally like romance novels written in the first person because I like to get inside the heads of both leads, but the structure of the story worked with us only being in Julie's head. I think I might have loved the book even more if I'd been inside the hero's head as well, but I enjoyed it as it was. The action scenes were taut and carried a real punch, and I felt every blow the characters took.

The story did get a touch convoluted at times, and I had a hard time remembering who some of the peripheral characters were, so I had to back-track occasionally to figure out who they were when they were mentioned. And the climax had the talking villain willing to explain all because "ha ha you're going to die anyway" and I would have liked something a little different there. But that's a minor drawback. I also didn't quite buy the reason that Julie was targeted by this conspiracy in the first place; it seemed like a bit of a stretch. However, the villains in the story were creepy and I was quite happy to see all of them get what they deserved.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book and will definitely be picking up the rest of this series to see how it evolves.

An Eye For Danger could of been a really good romantic suspense which is my favorite genre. There was a good story base but there were just too many players and subplots going on. I thought I would never say this but there was too much action. I had a hard time following the story and kept having to stop reading to think about what just happened and how it tied in. The book didn't flow smoothly and seemed to jump to scenes before the previous scene was finished.

I would not recommend the book.

Like a runaway locomotive, An Eye For DAnger started out at breakneck speed and gained momentum with every page! I hardly breathed during the reading of this page turner. The best part is that when you finish, it's not over. Jules and Sam will be back with a vengeance in a sequel, which is a good thing for anyone who reads this book. Wanting more is a given!

This book is PERFECT! And I take my hat off to C. Fairchild. She is a brilliant author.
I can’t ask for more from a novel. It’s my absolute top read for the year so far and I’m quite certain it’ll be at same top spot at the end of 2013.

Could be the longest and worst book I ever tried to read. I have sadly seen worse but I made it to 20% then labeled and filed DNF It is way to long so I gave it much more time than anything else. The pet peeves of word count does come to my mind. The Jules character was like nails on a chalk board WOW

Eye For Danger (The Goliath Conspiracy Series) by Christine M. Fairchild

I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with this book. I really did enjoy the action and intrigue, the romance was good too but it seemed like the story was a little longer than it really needed to be. There were times when it was difficult to keep track of who’s who because of the large cast of characters. But that just kept me guessing more.

The twists and turns are excellent, Fairchild definitely kept me guessing and I will too, because I’m not telling the whodunnit! There are definitely parts of the book that make you say “what? NO WAY”, some blushing moments of “oh my”, and of course there were plenty of “Oh NO!”.

One thing I found very interesting was intricacy of the character detail, yet the story didn’t feel bogged down by the character development, that is the sign of a good writer! She slipped it in on us! I felt like I really understood the motivations and actions of most of the characters. Of course the evildoers I never really understand what’s worth killing for, but that’s me.

Overall I think this would be a great beach read, I think An Eye For Danger is better read with few distractions and an ample amount of time to read it. It is a bit long and at times very intense.

Jules is a war photographer who is shell shocked and combat weary in more ways than one. Completely shut down on life, hiding away in her apartment, her only ray of life is Max, her faithful dog, till one day, a walk in the park changes everything. Stumbling into what she first thinks is a fight, she is soon embroiled in a life or death game where she doesn't know who is good or bad, and she has to look deep within herself to gather the strength to figure it out. Sam, her kidnapper turned saviour, is a guy who sees right through her, figures her out and winds her into his heart, turn by turn.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The slow burning romance (very slow in places, I was desperate for them to make out for the first half of the book, ha ha!) is a great central theme for the fast paced, complex story that made me very scared that they would not make it on several occasions. I loved the character Sam, burly, soft, tough, gentle: he is the ultimate hero you want to take home to the folks, if such a person exists. Loved this book, and thrilled to hear it is a trilogy, which makes it three times as good.

I don't normally give 5 stars as I'm picky but cause of Sam this book was worth that FIVE!

Where do I start. The beginning middle or just before the ending.

Was there a weak point. Yes. In the beginning it was a little slow (for me) but after that it picked up and just zoomed right through till the last chapter. I couldn't get enough of all the twist and turns and not trusting and trusting those agents. I even had this moment where I wanted to roll my eyes at Jules, cause she was testing my patience.

Overall I love Sam and of course Max. Now since I was left satisfied at the end, I'm hoping that book 2 will come out pretty soon!

This book had more twists and turns that a sidewinder's trail. It hooks you and reels you in. A woman suffering from PTSD meets an undercover cop with a secret. They are up against an organization called Goliath. It's not an ordinary organization, it's a group of people in law enforcement who want to be judge, jury, and executioner for the scum of the earth. But who determines who is a bad guy? And why does it seem that everyone is out too get Julie?

I felt like An Eye For Danger was a long drawn out story. With that said I enjoyed the plot and FBI agent Sam Fields was very entertaining. At times some of the scene changes were a bit confusing but the story was interesting and held my attention long enough for me to want to finish.

A little too winding and overwrought for me. At the base, it's a good story but it was difficult to sympathize with the female lead (hard to call her a heroine). Hope the second installment is more believable.

Well done characters in a romantic suspense story that may have had too much action, leaving the reader exhausted by the end. There was supposed to be at least one additional volume to continue the story, but I don't think it's out as of April 2014.
