Flirting with fate

Rate this book
‘FLIRTING WITH FATE’ is the first novel by Mrs. Preeti Singh, and finally, I have got an opportunity to read something different from usual college love stories. Set in 1980s, during the time of Contessa cars and Doordarshan, it is the story of Anand, who was abandoned by his parents and left at an orphanage – Palash, when he was just a baby. As he slowly grew into a beautiful boy, the lack of love and respect from the society developed negativity within him, which resulted in anger and a yearning for love, and which ultimately resulted into crimes. What started from small and subtle crimes, like stealing, quickly turned into bigger ones like rape and well planned murders. The hunger for love, respect, status and power made him disrespectful, and deadly dangerous. But is money and status everything? Can you escape your wrong doings? Do you pay for your bad Karma? The answers to all these questions are answered in this book, and you better read it to find those answers.

My Review...

Flirting with Fate is the first crime thriller novel by an Indian author I read. Finally a book that ended my streak of searching for an well written book by a female writer. Preeti Mam had very beautifully described Anand's character. The way he does everything to gain victory through destructive methods and yet finding out something good in it to fool his conscious. His search or his ultimate quest to be a Big Man, having everything under his belt, a Beautiful wife, A big house to live and A Car has been defined perfectly by the author. The tagline of the book "Karma Returns" goes well deep with the content of the story. Whatever good or bad deeds we do in our life we have to repay as it is in this birth only. The character of Fluffy, the dog is quite interesting and creative. The part that he too speaks (though no one understand what he wants to say) has been used quite effectively in penning down humor. I wish i had such a dog :P.

The ending part of the book is quite emotional and tragic when Anand starts losing everything he owned or he dreamt to own One by One. The way story ends with twists and turns which i didn't thought of. After completing the book i had a smile on my face and a thought in my mind which was there after a long time. "Will read it again someday."

VERDICT:

Wonderfully written story with an extra-ordinary story line. Will highly recommend this book to the readers. Grab a copy if not read yet.
Will give ☆☆☆☆ 1/2 stars :)

HEART TOUCHING, ENGROSSED WITH FEELING AND PAINFUL YET....SIMPLY AWESOME...

This is a debut novel of Preeti Singh..For me this was a very first time, that I was reading a crime thriller.

This is a story of an orphanage - Anand who was been disregarded by his parents at the doorstep of "Palash" when he was just a baby. As time passes by he grew up to a really handsome boy, but with the lack of feelings like love respect, care for others..,in place of all these he has all negativity inhered.

This negativity triggers him into crimes like plotting an accident, stealing and the most horrifying ones rape and planned murders. With the help of all these he was able to achieve what he wanted money and status..but as its is a saying and also a tagline of this book"karma returns" no one can get a easy escape from wrong deeds.

Same happened with -Anand finally his "karma returns" and to know how that happened one has to read "Flirting With Fate by Preeti Singh"

Now my Positive viewpoints:

This is a debut novel of Preeti Singh..(Ma’am) has done an awesome. I just loved the way she has mentioned her characters and other things, minutely – be it the nature and beauty of Shimla , or the a sinful deeds of Anand or the planned murders, or the pain and anger shown in characters. The character of Anand is well sketched that it looks real life character. One feels so involved while reading...Even the characters like Mr. Gonzalves, Sunita, Aslam Bhai, Annaya, Madhumita, Gauri, etc. are very well explained. And the most important character is Fluffy thoughts of Fluffy are mentioned as dialogues, which makes its more interesting a lively. There are many places where a reader feels like a part of this story and it feels as if me myself is living all this.

It is really very difficult for the one to stop till reaches end..one can really can't think of a predictable end for it.As the title says “karma always returns” is chosen very appropriately .Congratulations.- Preeti Singh( Ma’am)

Some suggestive points :

Although the end shows a women empowerment really well but at the same time as we all say "There is day after each dark night" I suggest if some different turn would have been taken in "Sunita's life that would be more appreciated"...this is just a suggestion.

Final words:
Overall if asked I would says...this is a hats off job done by Author ( Preeti Singh)

It's edgy, gory, dark & twisted written from an antagonists point of view. It's not a usual mystery story.

Brilliantly worked upon and with an evil 1st half and unexpected second half it makes deep impact in the mind of the readers.

Editing could have been better. Characters have been sketched well and the evil side of Anand has been penned down beautifully.

A little bit predictable in between but suddenly changing track in order to avoid plain ending makes it an interesting prospect.

When I got this book to read, being a crime fiction, I wasn’t that interested as the word crime was a kinda downer to me. I started reading unwillingly and realised that narrative is quick, without getting stuck anywhere. After about 15 pages, much to my amazement, I was sucked into the proceedings.

The story flows steadily throughout the book and nor does once the reader feel that it’s dragging which I think is very important to new generation readers who are not fond of literature-laden sentences. Without the use of bombastic words, her narrative touches a chord with the readers. I would not say it is simple, rather standard and sensitive.

The USP of FWF is even a seasoned reader could not predict how the story progresses, keeping the reader on tenderhooks right till the end.

Preeti should get brownie points for experimenting such a genre in her debut novel itself. I have read simple stories being told in a complicated way, but as for FWF, it is the other way round – a complicated story being narrated in a simple and gripping way.

The protagonist Anand is a metaphor of the society we live, characterisation of Anand is the highlight of the book. One may wonder if the love making part is slightly overstretched though the intimate moments are written with panache that clearly defines class instead of crass and love instead of lust. The climax portion does complete justice where Preeti delivers one punch after another and the reader is caught unawares.

The character I take home is Aslam Bhai and the dialogue is “he seems to be not affected with the world and with its surroundings. He is so calm and content with life”.

As for the con, the sentences in Hindi appearing here and there come across as spoilsport to a non-Hindi reader like me.

Last but not the least, this book is well-edited and proofread – something that has become a kinda rarity in scores of books being published nowadays

With a strong word of mouth from readers this book is sure to scale up on the sales chart. I go with a 3.5/5 for Preeti Singh’s Flirting With Fate, read it to know how Karma eventually returns.

Hope Preeti’s next outing will also be equally interesting.

Review: ‘Flirting with Fate’ is the debut novel by author Preeti Singh who not just makes a powerful foray into the world of writing but also makes an indelible impact. The tagline of this crime fiction reads ‘Karma always returns’, and even though it may seem a tad didactic at first glance, the plot is surprisingly fresh and the story irresistibly engaging. Some may feel that this is some piece of philosophy going preachy on stuff like ‘karma’ and blah, blah, blah. On the contrary, there is no such preaching and only a subtle implication of ‘karma’ towards the end.

The story revolves around Anand whose life is sketched out meticulously right from his birth till his downfall. The major portion of the book is set in ‘Palash’, an orphanage, and this is where the author has scored. There is a rustic feel which is very heart-rending and reminiscent of old Bollywood capers like ‘Mr. India’ and ‘Brahmachaari’. The life in a shabby and poverty-stricken orphanage has been described in a charming manner. But just when the readers begin to settle down in the comfortable milieu of serenity and harmonious togetherness, they are jolted out of their stupor with a series of shocks.

I like Preeti the tittle of the book : "Flirting with Fate", " Karma always returns" ... It is not about the story, in general terms... those who hurt you will eventually face their own karma, nothing to do with revenge...Karma is simply cause and effect. If you throw a rock through a window, making a hole in the window, you have a cause and an effect . Every effect that exists has some cause. If you are unhappy about your life, your financial situation, your relationship, your health, etc., then you must realize that a cause exists. These causes can be traced back to past lives.Make your intentions clear in your heart and in your mind, picture the person you wish to forgive and simply ...forgive….release….and let go of whatever it is that you’re holding on to in your deeper self.
Once you have done that also remember to repeat the same for forgiving yourself. forgive…release…and let go. this second part is not that easy either but it’s also necessary.you have now set yourself free. How will you know it’s been done. well, your feelings – your inner voice which is your guide, will let you know...

Greetings All,

Firstly, need to Thank Preeti Di..for the wonderful story line and characterization.. right from Anand to the little sweet angle Fluffy.

Emotions are well penned ..Story speaks loud about Karma and we all would have witness that Karma returns... A delicate point depicted and handled very Maturely well..
The protagonist- Anand, who was abandoned by his parents and left at an orphanage. Preeti Di has developed the character of Anand and showcased his different shades in the book since his childhood and it was close to reality to its maximum.

As we know Rome was not built in a day, similarly small crimes of Anand to get the things even in life, results him to be a Criminal. Reading was a pleasure and there were adequate moments of excitement too ;)... Appropriate twist from Aama's possessive love towards Anand to Gunjan's re-entry at the end keeps the story alive...

No other Title would have been apt other than this...Book is 100% not worth missing...

Eagerly Awaiting the next book of Preeti Di..

Blurb

The concept and creation by Pinkai Chaudhari was very well conceived by Preeti which is shown in her beautiful write up.

This Book talks about what makes a love complete and what extent a love can go in search of one. Preeti wonderfully attempts to relate karma with the life experience of Anand, the main character of this novel who does everything and can do anything to get his love , happiness and his acceptance in the society. It is written in simple english that you can however escape your wrong doings but you just cannot escape karma. A true message sent by preeti to her readers
