Brock and Poole investigate a double murder and find themselves caught up in a crime with international implications . . .
Detective Chief Inspector Brock is called out to a burnt-out camper van in Richmond, Surrey. The van contained two badly burned and very dead bodies. At first thought to be an unfortunate fire, Brock and his assistant, Detective Sergeant Dave Poole, discover the a double murder has been committed. As enquiries progress, it becomes clear that the dead couple were on the wrong side of the law, and Brock finds himself investigating not just a double murder, but a financial crime with international implications.
During Graham Ison's thirty-year career in Scotland Yard's Special Branch he was involved in several espionage cases and the investigation into the escape of the spy George Blake. He spent four years at 10 Downing Street as Protection Officer to two Prime Ministers and also served as second-in-command of the Diplomatic Protection Group.
This is another book in the Brock and Poole series, set in modern day London. However, I found some of the characterisation to be a little formulaic and old-fashioned, and was sorry there is not more development of the key characters themselves.
The plot started off very well, gripping the reader with a series of nasty murders. And overall we followed the clues, during which the author shows his mastery of police procedure, and worked out 'who dunnit'. But somehow it lacked the sparkle of some of his other works.
The books do stand alone, and the back stories are repeated in each book for the benefit of new readers (and to the irritation of regulars!).
I like this series. These books are comfortable. I like following the Detective Chief Inspector and his crew in their questioning and general investigations. They prove that even the slightest thing can be a clue. And, I like their joint work with the police in Germany, the Bahamas, and the U.S. This book is rather slim compared to others but more pages probably would be boring. Very entertaining.
The writing in this series seems to be really lazy. Good plot and I like the characters though.
I started with the last (?) book - the one after this one and found literally pages of descriptives about the characters and so on copied and pasted directly from one book to the other.
I'm going to go back to the beginning of the series and see what goes on there.
