When photo-journalist Kelly Sheffield is offered the chance to travel to Greenland for coverage of American science teams, she grabs it. Not only is it a dream assignment, it also means she’ll have a chance to reconnect with the compelling Jordan Westgate, the glaciologist studying the melting ice cap.

Jordan hasn’t forgotten Kelly, nor has she forgotten that she’d found it hard, all those years ago, to firmly reject the inappropriate overtures from a student. This Kelly—self-assured, successful, and even more attractive—is a threat to Jordan’s equilibrium, something she simply can’t allow.

Kelly finds the frozen landscape a match for Jordan’s chilly attitude. But Greenland is a surprising land of beauty and danger where even the iciest heart can melt.

I was born and live in Northern California equidistant between the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Nevada mountains. In addition to writing, I enjoy hiking, gardening, cooking, and theater. I am employed by a major west coast distribution company as a computer specialist and web designer.
Having dreamt of being a writer from a very young age, I have published poems, short stories, and numerous nonfiction articles on topics ranging from cooking to computer science. In 2001, I compiled, edited and published Late Bloomers: Awakening to Lesbianism After Forty, a collection of coming-out stories. Combining my love of writing with my favorite outdoor activity, hiking, I co-authored a hiking guide in 2005 with my life partner. This was published by Gem Guides Books.
In 2008, after a hiatus of over a decade, I returned to my first love, fiction, and wrote a lesbian romance novel, which was accepted for publication by Bella Books. I hope to turn this new success into a long-term second career.

Since I’ve discovered Anastasia Watley in her outstanding performance of The X Ingredient by Roslyn Sinclair, I’m a total fan. I don’t care if she reads the phone book, I’ll listen to it. Unfortunately, she doesn’t perform much lesfic so it’s always a treat to get an audiobook featuring her voice.

When photo-journalist Kelly Sheffield is offered a gig in Greenland, she sees the opportunity to reconnect with her former college crush, glaciologist Jordan Westgate who is working there for the summer. With the inhospitable Greenland landscape as a background, Kelly can only hope that Jordan’s heart will melt for her…

This novel has a complex plot, there are two main stories, the second chances romance that the book blurb describes, and a parallel coming of age story of Pippa, a young lesbian Greenlander who has psychic abilities. I didn’t read the blurb in advance but if I had, I would have been confused by the start of the book as this storyline isn’t mentioned.

One of the best parts of this book is the description of the landscape in all its splendor. The midnight sun, the barren landscape, the melting glaciers, the inhospitable life conditions are all very well depicted, almost in a photographic way. The novel starts with a bone-chilling hiking scene which holds the reader’s attention from the start. Ms. McCoy is a hiking enthusiast and you can see that she knows what she’s talking about.

I’m not an angst fan, I feel like life is complicated enough to add angst to my fiction reads. Unfortunately for me, this book has angst in some of its many manifestations: coming-out angst, fear of rejection angst, fight for survival angst, social condemnation angst, you name it. So, if you like seeing the characters undergo extreme anxiety and unhappiness, you’ll be happier than me.

I tend to be more forgiving with plot and storylines when I listen to an audiobook, especially if it’s read by such an accomplished narrator as Anastasia Watley. I think her performance raised my overall rating by one star. Her sultry voice is somehow perfect for the desolation of the landscape and the rawness of the emotions. She conveyed both perfectly and made my overall experience very enjoyable. As usual, her voices are distinct, even the male ones, and her narration pace perfect. Overall, 4 stars.

This just did not work for me. I don't know if it's because I was listening to this as an audio-book or what, but it bored me to tears. If I would have been reading a book, I could have skipped the boring parts.
The POV jumped to too many secondary characters and that drove me nuts. I desperately just wanted to hear about Kelly and Jordan, but felt like I was getting anything but.
I didn't enjoy the whole of Pippa's story-line. I felt like either give her her own book, or don't feature her odd visions so much. Not to mention shes a character that could be dead and everyone else is just sort of joking around doing their own thing like it didn't matter so much. Even Kelly when shes trying to find help for Pippa can't stop thinking about Jordan and her Mother. I guess the whole tone of this book bothered me.
I have a few of McCoy's other books, so hopefully they will appeal to me much more than this did.

This was actually a cool book (with thence research and Iceland background) that seemed to have run out of pages so the author pretty much proclaimed the mains would get together and the end.
The narration is great. We need more Watley.

As a Nature Lover and a Nature photographer, of course, I found the plot, the location & Kelly's profession very appealing & I loved the cover

BUT I'm very seriously disappointed by this book, it's not at all what I expected & it doesn't click, at all... And I really can't force myself so , even if it saddens me a lot ... => DNF

Disappointing. Not my favorite when it comes to Robbi McCoy's books. I liked the main characters Kelly and Jordan and their story, but this book had more to do with Greenland, the secondary character of Pippa and Pippa's Viking heritage, than Kelly and Jordan themselves. I found myself boring and skipping a lot of paragraphs. Two and a half stars, rounded up because in general I really like Robbi McCoy's writing style.

Melt by Robbi McCoy, a contemporary story based on Greenland with an ice queen, student-teacher trope.

I honestly did not expect the story to be as good as it was. I was expecting a mid love story but it exceeded my expectations. The main strengths of the book could be credited to its setting. Greenland was captured in an artist’s lens by the author. The vivid surroundings, the colour, the icebergs, the rich secretive history, the food, the people. All these aspects beautifully highlighted in different scenes and scenarios which kept the story interesting and colourful.

The characters were written well. Everyone was distinct, even the side characters. You could identify them from their voice and their personalities and it was refreshing. I could list all the memorable characters but I’d just be listing all of them because they all had something memorable about them.

I honestly expected a typical age gap, student-teacher type of story. However, Melt’s story differs because the student’s advances were rebuffed completely. And here in lies why I respect the author’s way of presenting such situation. The teacher/adult, made a conscious effort and well defined boundary not to cross that line and she followed through. Despite the allure of a 19 year old basically throwing themselves at her. And the effects of this brutal heart stomping was profound for everyone as we read on.

Honestly, this is probably the first book I read where the teacher rebuffed the student’s advances (because we all know forbidden love is more exciting for the audience). So, it is refreshing to read the effects of not giving in to the temptation. And if that’s not enough the author snuck in some sort of poetic karma in the story and as the reader, we watch as the effects of the learned experience gets passed on to someone else. We got an informed decision by the now adult student. It was a beautiful cosmic “pay-it-forward” sort of thing.

Melt was a good read. I enjoyed it, I reread some chapters again just to feel the emotions again.

“That’s one of the things you learn in photography. Look for the imperfections and bring them to the fore. That’s where the interest lies. That’s where you can touch someone’s heart.”

3.5 stars. At the midway point of this book I was struuuuggling and I had to work hard to convince myself to continue, and so I'm really glad that things turned around in such a way that I finished this book with mostly positive feelings. I'm still not in love with all of the writing decisions made, and I do think it reads in a very disjointed way, like two separate books cobbled into one and then shortened for length. But I found it to be a really interesting story and a lovely romance.

Kelly is a photographer/journalist who took a job in Greenland, largely because she heard that her old glaciologist professor would also be there. She fell in love with Jordan ten years ago, and although Jordan was kind and acted as a sort of mentor for her, she of course never allowed Kelly to take things further. Now that she's older and more mature, Kelly wants to connect again, see if Jordan could possibly return her feelings. The secondary plotline involves Pippa, a young Inuit woman looking into her ancestry, and the way it possibly connects with the historical Viking presence in Greenland. I actually really enjoyed that part of the plot; it got slightly speculative in a way I could have done without, but it was really interesting, getting those glimpses into the past. I don't know how historically accurate or plausible that entire plot was, but it seemed to have really good foundations for believability. That relentless pursuit of the past was easy to rally behind, especially because she's such a sweetheart. At first, I was a little frustrated by the fact that Pippa's story kept taking us away from the main romance, but I ultimately came to really like it, and Pippa, with all of her baby lesbian woes.

The main romance hit a lot of my buttons (age gap, one person has been pining for the other for years) but the allure was definitely stymied by a lot of annoying writing decisions, silly drama and conflict. The fact that so much page time was given over to Pippa meant that we didn't see as much of the couple as I would have liked. But that wasn't the problem. Honestly; the main source of my irritation is the silly 'jealous third party tries to sabotage the relationship' plot. These kinds of plots always frustrate me, because almost every author who writes it gives said party a cartoonish villainy that's hard to take seriously. Sonja was annoying, sure, but every time she interfered or lied or tried to seduce someone, I just kept thinking... why? Her character wasn't developed in any significant way to make her actions plausible, so she just seemed like a walking plot device to cause silly melodrama and contrived misunderstandings between Kelly and Jordan, instead of a character in her own right. I just really hate when stuff like this is used as conflict; it feels so dated. I know this is an older book, but still.

Happily, things did pick up a lot for me in the last quarter. There's a little bit of action/peril that's really well-written. I loved the way their rekindled romance happened, when it was finally allowed to. I do kind of wish we'd seen a couple of flashbacks, or gotten more details about Kelly and Jordan's past when they were professor/student, but we were given just enough of a foundation for me to feel like there were actually substantial feelings at play, and for me to really pull for them. There were a few things about the writing that I was a little iffy on; there were more things that I loved, and thought were really well-expressed. I really loved the setting in general, all the natural beauty of Greenland and being amidst the icebergs. The way that science and photo-journalism came into play were really interesting. And when it counted, the romance did tug at my heart.

Listened to the audiobook as read by Anastasia Watley, who just has one of those voices, man. I always love listening to her. I get why this has mixed reviews. Because Pippa's story takes up so much space, it really doesn't feel like the main romance gets to blossom and develop in the way that it could have. I'm just lucky that I enjoyed all facets of the plot. Truly, this could have probably been two books, and maybe that would have solved some of its problems? Still a pretty good read, imo.

Photo Journalist, Kelly Sheffield, jumps at the chance of a trip to Greenland to cover the American Science teams. It’s an assignment of a lifetime. Not only that, it means Kelly can once again meet with Jordan Westgate, a glaciologist studying the melting ice cap. Kelly had a major crush on Jordan when she was her student and has never forgotten her. Will Jordan remember her?

Jordan has never forgotten Kelly. She’d found it really difficult to resist the allure of her forward, irresistible student. But she knew she couldn’t allow anything to happen between them.

When Kelly and Jordan meet again, Jordan finds Kelly at the age of thirty, even more attractive. She’s successful, beautiful and oozes confidence. But still Jordan can’t allow Kelly to get close to her. Why is Jordan holding back?

Despite both women being attracted to each other, it begins to look as though they will part forever when Kelly leaves Greenland for home. Will Jordan’s icy heart melt along with the ice in Greenland and allow her to accept Kelly’s love and love her back? Or will she remain the ice queen?

Yet another winner from Robbi McCoy. A beautifully written page turner from start to finish.

Both Kelly and Jordan are multifaceted, easy to get to know characters amongst a wealth of well formed friends and colleagues to enhance the story and progress it forward.

The scenic descriptions of Greenland were so well written, they had me shivering and reaching for a jacket. I was transported in amongst the characters and living the story with them.

This is more than just one present day story. There is also a dreamlike fantasy, which dates back to the days of the Vikings settling in Greenland. It is a story which could quite conceivably be a true account from the way it is written. Who knows? This dream is very cleverly interspersed in with the main story and it’s seamlessly done so that it doesn’t interfere with the main plot or detract from your reading pleasure.

As with all the rest of Robbi McCoy’s books, you never know what theme you are getting. They are all so different. The one thing I do know when picking up one of Robbi’s books, is that I’ll be in for a jolly good read. I can’t wait now to see what will be next.

The romance was lukewarm, but I surely liked everything about Greenland - glaciers, Vikings and Inuits and all.
Good book indeed.

I didn't really enjoy this story -- I found almost all the characters annoying and uninteresting. The major love affair took up so little of the story that I didn't really care if they got together or not. Also Sonja was absolutely the worst in every way and the response to everything that she did was preposterous. The story with Asa was actually the most interesting and well written part but would have been more appropriate in another novel. Especially making it a dream/vision of pippa's was strange and seemed out of place. A lesbian story taking place in Viking Iceland or one that actually focussed on jordan and kelley would have been much more interesting than this book

This book should be a 2.5. I liked it enough to finish it, but that's about it.
There were nice parts to this book- the descriptions of Greenland and its cultures. The writing wasn't terrible.
There were a lot of really bad parts of this book- Pippa's vision, the painfully contrived ending that neatly wrapped everything, undeveloped characters...

If the book had been about Pippa coming of age in Greenland in a culture that doesn't (?) accept her and her relationship with Kelly [that sadly ends with Kelly and Jordan together] it would have been excellent.

Four stars for the setting. I'm a sucker for anything set North of where ever I am, and this book did not disappoint. Loved the use of the setting in the story. The romance, well, could have been better developed. The conflict was pretty thin, and I'm not sure either character was fully rounded.
But, wow. The setting.

I enjoyed the story and learning about ice. The author did her homework on this one. The characters were nothing new, kind of the same ol' lesbians, in a different setting. I do like this author though and will continue to read her works.

That time I picked an audiobook because it had a geologist character, then fell asleep because it was boring, then woke up and found out that it was a lesbian romance novel.

The blurb and plot idea sounded so promising, but I feel I didn't really get what I signed up for, just judging from the blurb.

I liked the general idea and the setting a lot and also the description of Greenland and its inhabitants, it was very easy to imagine it all vividly.

However...who picks up that book expecting to get an actual romance story might be disappointed...the romantic plot between the two characters who were supposed to get together felt rather like a sub-plot...there was simply too much going on. I felt like there was a completely unnecessary focus on Pippa and her halucinations/dreams of the past life of her ancestors and I ended up skipping all of those chapters because it didn't interest me one bit. What a waste of time and space.

Instead of only TELLING the romance between Kelly and Jordan, the book would have been so much more interesting if the chapters from Pippa's perspective and that weird plot about her ancestors would have been ommitted. Instead it would have been far more interesting and deserving of an actual romance novel to maybe SHOW Kelly and Jordan's past relationship 9 years ago as flashbacks instead of just telling it...

Story of a photojournalist who went to Greenland for an assignment and a chance to re-connect with her college professor that she was in love with. The story is okay and so are the characters. There's an interesting bit about ancient Vikings trying to survive the harsh winters. It also touches upon their relationship (or non-relationship) with the native Greenlanders, who of course, are adept at surviving the climate. I primarily picked up the book because of the setting. The description of the place is wonderful and makes me want to visit Greenland.

This was a weird read but a good one too! I love multiple POV's but I got SO confused when it went hundreds of years back in time. It definitely took me a while to get into it but then I was hooked on the history side of it and liked how they linked it together with the present day characters. It was completely unexpected though as I didn't see any mention when I started listening to the audiobook and had to double check I hadn't accidently switched to a different title 😅

Some good climate change references as that was the overall plot underneath everything else

First I listened to this on audio and the narration is fantastic! I really enjoyed this book overall. It’s not your typical lesfic and the book follow several winding paths to get to the HEA. I found the side plots to be very intriguing and I think if you go into reading this book with an open mind you will too! I was in a reading slump for a couple of months and this type of unusual book was exactly what I needed to get me out of it!

While I thought this was going to be a typical romance book, it surprised me that it had so many layers. There were so many stories interwoven and thawed and melted - the main characters and the actual glaciers themselves. Although there were quite a few scientific facts explained, there was a great deal of the heritage of the Greenlanders which I didn't know. It's well written and I enjoyed the narration by Anastasia Watley!

This felt like a fever dream that’s shifting perspective so much you can barely keep up with what’s going on.

Thoughts I had while reading:

1. This is wildly slow and uninteresting beginning
2. “For reals?” 🤮
3. What the fuck is going on?
4. Kelly gives stalker vibes
5. So now we’re bringing in magic vibes
