About the author

Jessica Barksdale Inclán's sixteenth novel, What the Moon Did, and her first short story collection, Trick of the Porch Light, were published in 2023. Her novels include Her Daughter’s Eyes, The Play's the Thing, and The Burning Hour.

A Pushcart Prize and Best-of-the-Net nominee, her short stories, poems, and essays have appeared in or are forthcoming in the The Sun, Salt Hill Journal, Tahoma Review, and So to Speak. So after a terribly slow start I finally got into this book. I read the first 10 or so pages like 5 times over the month, never getting very far. Then I challenged myself to read and not stop for one night- reporting progress to fellow goodreader Angie - Hi Angie!- then I was able to really enjoy this story. I really like the world Inlan creates, moving matter is a magical ability is very unique and interesting. Having everything in French the way some things are in Latin, or Elvish, or some other word language power is not unique.
Aside form the explicit scenes of "romance" it was a very good tale. I like there to be hookups and so called love in books, or at least sexual tension or something similar. But, having crazy sex before a big fight scene or while trapped in a mind prison, that seems a bit much.
Overall good book, but not a favorite. I'll be sure to remember the magic abilities people have. the names or plot, not so much. I wasn't even able to remember the first book's names until I ran across them again.
I'm not sure what I will think of the last book in the series, "Believe in Me"

This books was just eh for me. Honestly it felt more like a fanfiction book adapted to be an original, and a somewhat poorly written well as well. The storyline was somewhat predictable and I would've like a few surprise moments instead. After the seemingly from nowhere backstory of Fabia's "supposed" imaginary friend Telly and how she hadn't thought about him in years, to the revelation of Rufus' (and what kind of hero name is that anyway?) feeling like he's known Fabia his entire life it was pretty easy to see that the "made up" Telly is actually Rufus from a mile away.

A disappointment.

picked up in a bargain bin for $2. writing is very clunky in parts, esp. the beginning, which is mostly exposition (to be expected as this is the second in a trilogy, but still). definitely needed a proofreader; lots of typos. humor was better than average but characters pretty one-dimensional. as for plot... eh. some interesting mythology. never liked the title, and soon came to hate it... as every time i spotted it i had Rod Stewart crooning in my head for hours after.

Reason to Believe actually begins around the same period (or is it before?) Sariel met Miranda in the first book. It sort of bridges the gap between the time of Sariel’s injury at Kallisto’s hands and the first confrontation of the evil trio. Rufus’ mind was wiped blank by Kallisto when the story began, and would have died out on the streets with no memory of who he was if Fabia, whose supernatural hearing is legendary, hadn’t taken him in. While he was recovering from the mess Kallisto left him in, the attraction between both of them grew steadily.

Soon as he was recovered, the magical council decided to go after the villains, only they fell into a trap and both Fabia and Rufus were bound by dark magic to an island but on two parallel dimensions with sand writing as the only means of communication. Both must work together to release themselves from Kallisto’s evil enchantment, rescue the others and complete their mission before they could even think of the affair of their hearts.

[druhé čítanie, december 2023] Slabšie ako prvý diel.

[prvé čítanie, máj 2018] Uvedomujem si, že táto séria je kruto priemerná (vlastne v niektorých ohľadoch dokonca podpriemerná). Ale z nejakého mne neznámeho dôvodu sa mi to číta fakt dobre. Taká dokonalá oddychovka. Rozmýšľať o tom veľmi nemusím, zápletky nie sú také zamotané a zložité, aby mi ich rozlúsknutie zabralo viac ako prečítanie dvoch krátkych odsekov a nie je tam ani nijak zvlášť hlboké posolstvo alebo niečo prudko filozofické.

Skrátka - aj keď je to kravina, je to čitateľná kravina.

The absolute sadness of the first chapter almost brought me to my knees. OMG was that sad. I can't wait until they catch the bastard who did that to Rufus. Though the good guys won't do to him/her what should be done. IMHO an eye for an eye and all that it entails. Rufus made a spectacular hero and Fabia Fair (what a name) was a wonderful humanitarian caring for the downtrodden and abused. A classic tale of good vs evil with a magical twist.

Just finished Reason To Believe, the second book in the Believe series by Jessica Barksdale Inclan, and Rufus Valasay and Fabia Fair's story. Just magical! I liked it better than the first book. The excerpt to third book, Believe in Me, Felix Valasay and Sayblee Safipour's story, read like the best one yet. Plus it will include the final confrontation with Quain Dalzeil.

There were a few twists that I was not prepared for, that made this book so enjoyable. The Valasay brothers sure are hot, they make me wish that magic really did exist. How do you know when you have found the person that is just right for you?

táto kniha ma oproti prvému dielu mierne sklamala, hlavne kvôli tomu, že sa dej odohráva ešte pred začatím prvej knihy a autorka tak nevyužila dejové prostredie ktoré si pripravila v prvej knihe, ozaj škoda.
