Dating can be hard. Especially when your date happens to be a raging kleptomaniac, or your grandmother's bridge partner, or a mime. Check Please follows a series of blind dinner dates that couldn't get any worse -- until they do. Could there possibly be a light at the end of the tunnel?
Acting editions of scripts are great for blind readers because they include detailed descriptions of the action, expressions, and movements of characters as well as information about costumes, lighting, set, and props. This is especially true for comedies, which often rely heavily on non-visual cues to establish timing and make jokes effective. So I opened this play already knowing I'd enjoy it but also wondering hw much I would. After all, it's basically a long riff on the same theme: bad dates. Some of the funniest scenes were the ones with no dialogue. I found myself not only laughing myself at the situation as presented, but also enjoying imagining how an audience might respond to seeing it. What would they sound like? That only heightened my own laughter. This play relies on stereotypes and not-too-subtle humor which may make some readers uncomfortable. I would remind potential readers that this play wasn't intended to hurt anyone, or belittle anyone. It was intended to highlight what we all could remember a bit more often: If you don't succeed the first time, try again. Learn from your past experiences, and never give up on the possibility of finding love in unexpected places and with unexpected people.
Overall, it wasn’t a bad read, but the scene with Linda was purely inexcusable. It’s absolutely sickening how often DID and other disorders are stereotyped and picked fun at for comedic purposes. This is disgusting.
I directed this play as part of my school's senior one-acts night and absolutely loved it! It was a crowd-pleaser! The script is fairly flexible and easy-to-understand, and Rand responds to any email inquiries. Check Please is such a fun show- the roles double beautifully and is enjoyable for director and cast alike.
This show was part of a senior-directed production at my school, and it's so much fun! It's such a simple premise, but it's really funny and super cute.
I read this in my theatre class and honestly it was just a fun time with a pretty funny script. There’s not a whole lot of substance but the characters all have very unique quirks. I got to read for Linda and that was just so much fun! 👍🏻
