FINDING JUSTICE is Rachel Brimble's Harlequin debut and a worthy one it is too. Harlequin Super Romance is an imprint which features novels with slightly more intricate plots than regular romances have. This is a piece of emotional drama combined with romance and even suspense. A great combination and a most absorbing read.
Detective Sergeant Cat Forester is a strong police detective, a no nonsense woman with a mission and a passion for justice. However, beneath that tough exterior there's a heartache which is impossible to heal, which she shares with no one. Her carefree life changed forever the day her beloved father was run over by a drunk driver. Cat's mum turned to drink - the very substance which caused her late husband's demise - as the balm to soothe her wounds. Her mother's descent into alcoholism takes every ounce of Cat's coping skills. Because of this, she turned her back on her best friends, Sarah, the best friend a girl ever had and Jay her one time lover, both residents of Templeton Cove, the family's yearly holiday destination. Now, however, Templeton Cove is calling once more. Sarah has been found murdered in puzzling circumstances and Jay is a suspect. As a police detective with an unblemished record of solving murders, Cat considers it her duty to find her friend's killer.
But finding justice is only part of the story. Cat has to find her way back to Jay again. He never forgot her, nor their unfinished business. Cat finds it difficult to realize that she doesn't, in fact, have to face her problems alone. A trouble shared is a trouble halved and with the support of her lover and brother, she can face the difficulties with her mother. But will she let go and try to trust or will she continue to be Sergeant Fix It, with the solution for everything? Meanwhile, it becomes more and more difficult to solve the mystery of Sarah's death. The young woman had a lot of secrets and how is it possible to unravel them?
As well as an absorbing mystery, this novel deals with the predicament of people caught up in addiction and that of those who care for them. I think readers should really enjoy this. Just one tiny thing and this could be editorial rather than authorial (Authorial? Is there such a word?). Cat's English and the book has an English setting. Yet Cat keeps on referring to herself as a 'cop'. 'Cop' is an American colloquialism, I'd have thought. I can understand a British police officer using the word 'cop' now and again, but I'd have thought they'd have used the term 'police officer' or 'police detective' instead. I haven't visited the UK in a long time, so maybe things have changed. The book was published in the USA so maybe that's why.
Looking forward to reading more from Rachel Brimble in the future.
Being in the line of justice can be very tough and when you are female I think it is even harder, everyone knows it more of a man's kind of world. And when your childhood friend is killed and you have to go after the killer, being emotionally involved makes it all the more worse to deal with.
But imagine that the suspect is your past and deep down you know he is innocent for how can a kind and caring man be capable of committing such a ultimate act of evil? Will you still go after the truth in order to honour your friend's memory or will you look the other way in order to be with the man that makes your heart beat faster than a flying bullet?
In the début read from author Rachel Brimble this is the situation that Sergeant Cat Forrester finds herself trapped in. She has the chance to show she is loyal to justice or simply fall of the cliff into bliss whist covered in guilt. She goes for the loyalty we all love to see in one that upholds the law. Only being already emotionally involved on the level of friendship and romance does prove harder than she thought, the lines seem blurred and she needs to really push to keep her balance.
When she finds out a secret about suspect numero uno Jay that could jeopardize any possible future they might have a shot at, the mystery level of this read intensifies to above and beyond and I found myself having to make sure that am reading a Harlequin Superromance and not one from the Intrigue line, yes the action, suspense and mystery was that awesome!
The character of Cat was phenomenal, she does a man's job and she does it so very well, never backing down and always going for the jugular when the time calls for it. But as tough as she is when it comes to the job she is weak and falling into slippery territory when it comes to her love life, so you have a combination of a heroine that will make any criminal stop dead in his tracks but at the same time a woman that any prying man will go after because she can easily be broken when it comes to romance. Totally amazing combination and I for one as reader have not really seen this combination done before! Loved it!
The character of Jay was the kind that as the story builds you find yourself thinking he is so sweet, kind and caring he cannot possibly be a killer, but the mystery level around this man is so intense that it makes you start to think that just maybe the author is going to hit you any minute now with a boom moment and he will turn out to be the killer! A lethal and delicious combination of emotions were rolling around in my head while reading about this man! And am here to report I absolutely adored it! Kept me entertained and on the edge of my seat.
The backdrop settings were in line with the intense building here comes the killer moments and the dialogue was just perfect to keep me mystified. I loved that the author did not let the whole book become about the romance between Jay and Cat, but instead kept the focus on the murder and the secrets of Jay and Cat , letting the romance kind of drop to the background which is unusual for a Superromance read but again so very well done and such a brilliant touch!
I am taking away a message of we all have secrets some not half as bad as you may think and others that we would rather keep hidden from those who love us for they might think less of us, but if someone truly loves you any secret no matter how dirty will be accepted and understood and you will be surprised at the level of support you will receive.
I will add that the read ends in such a manner that you can tell there is more to come, and like myself you will find yourself counting down the days for the next read in this series to hit, you simply will NEED to know.
I highly recommend this read for lovers of romance that have a dose of action, intrigue and passion flaring to the point of no return! A sensual, romantic action packed read that will simply blow you away!
I look forward to the next read from this author, if the first one was this good I can only imagine how awesome the next will be! A best seller, go get a copy now!
5/5 star review "She has found her romance but will she find the justice?"
Sergeant Cat Forrester has a lot on her plate. Working to put the bad guys behind bars and dealing with an Alcoholic mother. When a childhood friend is murdered and their best friend and Cat’s ex lover is the suspect she agrees to visit and see if she can help clear his name.
Jay Garrett has everything he could want, except for Cat in his life. A recovering drug addict he has worked hard to keep clean and be someone he can make his parents proud of. But now the police chief thinks of him, as the number one suspect. And he is going to need all the help he can get to stay out of jail.
I have mixed emotions about this book. It started off slow for me and parts of it seemed to repetitive. I also had issue with both Cat and Jay lying, and it made me question was this always going to be an issue in real life. Lying in my opinion leads to trust issues. I didn’t care for the back and forth lying, trust, whole truth issues.
Now for the good part: I felt in the end Jay redeemed himself somewhat and the last 1/3 of the book really took off for me “ In the best of ways”, to the point I was turning pages really fast to find out who the killer was. I was correct by the way.
One of my favorite lines: “Hey, anytime you want to spank it, just shout.” 4.5/5 stars
Finding Justice is Rachel Brimbles debut novel for Harlequin Superromance and it doesn't disappoint. This book could easily have been published under the Intrigue line, but I'm glad it didn't.
Cat is the kind of heroine you very rarely find in Harlequins where any level of mystery is involved. She's a top notch inspector and there's not a weak bone in her body when it comes to finding a killer. Now when it comes to her personal life that's another story.
I loved Cat and I especially loved how she put the case first, over her blossoming relationship with Jay, a childhood friend that she shared a one night stand with.
There was a good mix of personal feelings as well as intrigue to this book and a big plus was how the romance part was there, and at times it sizzled, but it wasn't the focal point of the story, that was left for the mystery of finding their friend Sarah's killer.
Rachel also adds a bit more to the story, having both the hero and the heroines mother as addicts, Jay with drugs and Julia with alcohol. Its not something you usually see in Harlequin romance, but it really humanized Jay. It also took him away from the "Alpha Male" category that most heroes from series romance fall into. He was flawed very much so, and that makes me love him all the more.
As for the whodunit, I figured it out pretty early on, but I'm pretty good at that.
Anyone that likes a good mystery will enjoy this one. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
A tightly-plotted romantic thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats, Finding Justice is Rachel Brimble’s exquisitely written debut novel for Harlequin Superromance!
Sergeant Cat Forrester has got a lot on her plate at the moment. Juggling the challenging demands of her busy job with caring for a mother who is constantly trying to mend her grieving heart by seeking solace at the bottom of a glass has left her feeling wrung out and exhausted. But Cat has never backed down from a challenge in her life and she sure as hell is not about to start now. Her job might get more stressful by the day and her mother’s addiction might be spiraling out of control, but Cat is determined to continue to soldier on – even if it means putting herself second and everyone else first. Ensuring that justice is served is paramount to Cat – which is why when she receives news that her childhood friend Sarah has been murdered, she vows to get to the bottom of this case and uncover the truth about the person who killed her. But there’s a catch: if Cat is to solve this mystery, she must return to Templeton Cove, the coastal town where she spent many of her childhood holidays, and work closely with her first love, Jay Garrett – who has been accused of Sarah’s murder!
The last couple of years had been tough on Jay Garrett. After going through a very difficult time, Jay had found himself getting mixed up in a cruel and dangerous world that had almost destroyed him. But the courageous entrepreneur had fought back and worked hard to get back on the straight and narrow. Although he is now the chief suspect in the investigation of his friend Sarah’s murder, Jay is determined to clear his name and to prove to everyone that he is not a murderer. But if he wants justice to be served, then he needs help. With the local police seeming determined to pin this crime on him, Jay realises that he needs his old girlfriend, Cat Forrester’s help. It’s been years since Cat and Jay last clapped eyes on one another, but old feelings and deeply-buried passions soon come flooding back…
Cat might still be as attracted to Jay as she’s always been, but she knows that if she’s to find Sarah’s murderer she must keep her feelings at bay and her heart firmly under lock and key! Although Cat knows that Jay couldn’t possibly have murdered Sarah, the evidence seems to be stacked against him. Getting involved with a suspect – even one whom she’s known for most of her life – is not a good idea. However, resisting Jay’s tempting kisses is easier said than done…
With a vengeful killer on the loose and her own life in peril, Cat realizes that she mustn’t let Jay distract her from her investigation – nor must she allow him to uncover a secret which she’s gone at great lengths to conceal. Will Jay manage to convince Cat of his innocence? And is Jay and Cat’s new found love for one another strong enough to overcome all the obstacles standing in their way?
Finding Justice is a fabulously addictive romantic suspense novel which I couldn’t bear to put down! Rachel Brimble has penned a captivating tale of dangerous secrets and hidden desires, richly imbued with heart-pounding intrigue, nail-biting drama and heart-warming romance, that kept me engrossed from beginning to end.
With a strong and believable kick-ass heroine and a sexy enigmatic hero, Finding Justice is a terrific Harlequin Superromance sure to appeal to fans of Karen Rose and Nora Roberts!
The review was originally published on Cataromance.
Can I say that I’m proud to say that I’m honored to have read Rachel Brimble’s debut Superromance. I was thrilled when I emailed her and told her that I was going to feature every Thursday Harlequin. I asked her if I could spotlight her debut and she more than said yes and she would like send me the book to review. Woo Hoo! As I mentioned above, she has the “voice” for Superromance. I know of some published Harlequin authors that write for the other lines and they have submitted to the line and were rejected. It’s all about the “voice” in Superromance. You either have it or you don’t. Ms. Brimble has it…in spades!
When we first meet Cat, she yelling at her squad to get a drunk driver. Being an Inspector was everything she wanted to be when her dad was killed by a drunk driver. Bring people to justice when they have done something wrong. In the meantime, she lost touch with her friends and herself. She is too busy keeping her mother out of trouble. With no help from her brother, she feels like a failure.
When she gets a phone call from her friend and one time lover Jay, it all comes full circle for herself. The murder of their best friend and he is the prime suspect. Realizing that its time for her brother to step up to the plate with their mother, she leaves to the Cove to help Jay and ends up losing her heart all over again.
What makes this story so special is because it deals with a topic that most people don’t talk about…addiction and the effect that it has on yourself (whether you are the addict or not), your job, friends and your family. I know first hand with a grandmother and my brother. I understood Cat from the beginning of the story and the feelings and emotions that she was going through. Been there, done that and worn the t-shirt.
The suspense element was a delight and its done with a deft touch from Ms. Brimble. She doesn’t hit you over the head with it and I seriously didn’t know who the villain was until it was revealed. I love that when I can’t figure it out until the author reveals it. It was a complete surprise and the beach scene was spectacular. I was laughing one moment and then praying that it would end well for Jay and Cat.
If you are looking for a book that is full of emotion, suspense and a love between two people that never died, Finding Justice is it for you. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Brimble has in store for the next book in the Cove.
*I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was not paid for my thoughts or opinions*
I love Rachel Brimble's writing, and I quickly fell in love with the setting and characters in Finding Justice too. Cat Forrester is a strong woman with major trust issues - not surprising considering the mess that her family life has turned into since her father's death as a result of a drink-driving incident and her mother's descent into alcoholism. Jay Garrett is an attractive, successful businessman and an old friend of Cat's who also just happens to be a recovering drug addict and a suspect in the murder of their mutual friend, Sarah. The investigation takes Cat back to Templeton Cove and reminds her of what Jay once was to her, but there are huge challenges that both of them must overcome if they are to build any kind of future. Both Cat and Jay's feelings for each other, and their doubts about their future, came across strongly, and the twists and turns of the investigation kept me guessing to the end. Finding Justice is a powerful and suspenseful story which narrowly missed out on a 5-star rating only because I felt that sometimes the issues overshadowed the plot.
She's a cop. He's a suspect in the murder of their best friend. Jay and Cat haven't seen each other for seven years and a lot has changed. Jay has done things he's not proud of. Cat has secrets she can't tell. Other than that, they're still drawn to each other as though they'd never been apart.
I loved these characters and this story. Enough suspense to keep you wondering and enough romance to be invested in Jay and Cat. Rachel Brimble has crafted an entertaining and suspenseful story. I highly recommend this book.
Cat Forrester is a Sergeant with a mission. Ever since her father was killed by a drunk driver, she’s wanted to take down criminals who kill people that have a lot of life ahead of them. But while her mother tries to drink away her sorrow, she’s barely got her head above water most days. Read More
I'm a sucker for reunion stories and this one kept me flipping the pages. Cat and Jay have made mistakes and seeing each other again causes them both pain. Especially as they work together to find the person who killed a close friend. Ms. Brimble kept the emotions high as they struggled to trust again.
Didn't see it coming. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat. Cat is a law enforcement officer. She takes care of her alcoholic Mom. When she gets a call from a childhood friend her life begins to spin even further out of control. When Jay calls to tell her that their mutual friend has been murdered and that he's a suspect she heads to the cove. Cat is set on helping find the person who murdered her friend and set up Jay, her other friend. She can't believe what she finds while doing her investigation. You won't want to put this book down!
2.5 stars Oh my goodness, where do I even start? I did like the setting of this book. Most Superromances I've read have American settings, so the English seaside town was a nice change. And I liked the basic set-up of the novel, with police sargeant Cat coming to the town to investigate her childhood friend's murder and also rekindling a romance with her first boyfriend, Jay. There's actually a lot of potential in this book, but things starts turning into a bit of a mess early on.
First of all, both characters are dealing with addiction issues - the heroine's mother is an alcoholic and the hero is a recovering drug addict. Parts of this get handled well and one can see where this would be an obvious source of conflict. However, the heroine's suspicion of her former friend and hero starts to make no sense after a while. The poor guy proves himself over and over and over, but she still keeps questioning Jay. Cat apparently trusts the guy enough to initiate sex with him, but can't trust him enough to believe in his innocence.
I also got frustrated with Cat because of how long she kept hiding things from Jay. At first, this makes sense given the circumstances of the murder investigation and the fact that they haven't seen each other in 7 years. However, even after these two start embarking on some kind of romantic relationship, . It all leads to a constant cycle of physical attraction and mutual distrust. Oh, and .
In addition to the relationship, the so-called murder investigation is rough going, too. Cat seems to have no strategy and her approach to witnesses and gathering evidence just made no sense. It could have been an exciting story, but just didn't fulfill its potential.
