Drawn together across centuries, will their love be strong enough to defeat an ancient curse?

Colonel Caleb DeCardian was fighting America’s Civil War on the side of the Union when a freak shower of ball lightning transported him to the present, along with rival and former friend, Seth Reilly. Adapting to the 21st century is hard enough for the colonel, but he also has to find Seth, who cursed him to life as a werewolf. The last thing on Caleb’s mind is romance. Then fetching Arianna Hart nearly runs him down with her car. He can’t deny his attraction to the outspoken schoolteacher, but knows he should forget her.

Arianna finds Caleb bewildering, yet intriguing: courtly manners, smoldering sensuality and eyes that glow silver at night? When she sees Civil War photographs featuring a Union officer who looks exactly like Caleb, she begins to understand the man she is falling in love with harbors multiple secrets--some of which threaten the possibility of their happiness.

Finding a decent guy who'll commit is hard enough. How can she expect Caleb to forsake his own century to be with her.

There’s so much going on here, I don’t know where to start first.

Mae Clair has written a story that seamlessly weaves together time travel, lycanthropy, Civil War history, romance, and suspense. This novel excels on all levels—plot, pacing, characterization, and setting.

The fact that Weathering Rock manages to have so much going on while not causing readers to suspend belief is a testament to the writer’s abilities. There are so many characters and plots intersecting in one town at one time, and yet it all works. More than that, it exceeds expectations and sucks the reader in.

Each character has an arc and a voice uniquely his or her own, and the ways they develop and the ways their lives intertwine and unfold keep the reader turning the pages in a rush to see the culmination of their stories.

The richness of the setting is either a beautiful bonus for the reader or the solid structure on which the story is built. The fact that the setting is so strongly developed and yet so unobtrusive is proof of the author’s abilities. You feel like you’re there, and you’re enamored with the place, but it never gets in the way.

This story was a joy to read. From first word to last, I was captivated. This was a fast and satisfying read that I highly recommend.

Weathering Rock is the story of Arianna Hart, a teacher of American history at the local middle school who, driving home late in the evening, almost runs over a horse rider. She meets Caleb DeCardian. ”He looked to be in his early thirties, dressed in jeans, a dark t-shirt and an archaic-looking frock coat. The garment was straight out of a history book.” Caleb introduces himself as “Retired military.” And the adventure begins. An adventure filled with secrets, curses, time travel and a lot of twists and turns.
The author, Mae Clair, weaves so intricately romance, time travel, werewolf, history in the plot. I may say it’s a cross over. A bit for all tastes. I loved Weathering Rock because it took the werewolf/human girl story line in a completely original direction. The characters were three-dimensional, believable, the dialogue flowed naturally, and no one fell in the clearly defined box of black or white, good or evil; the flow of the story takes you away.
I LOVED the Hero! Caleb is a fabulous hero. He's honorable and compassionate and protective, very alpha in some respects but in other respects rather vulnerable. He was everything you could want in a male lead: heroic, strong, sensitive, understanding, gorgeous, brave, vulnerable, passionate, sexy, and just down right lovable. There’s only one fault – he’s one hundred forty-five years older than the heroine.
I enjoyed the Caleb/Rick relationship especially. Touching and filled with unexpected revelations.
Chemistry between Arianna and Caleb is spot-on. You can feel the sexual tension and the friendship/love coming off the page.
Mae Clair has a vivid imagination and is a world-class storyteller. Her fondness for history is obvious. The characters are well thought out and the way the author describes them makes it easy to picture what they look like throughout the book. I'm looking forward to her next book.
It kept me up worrying and wondering what the characters would do next, and I thought about it long after I read the last page. It had me in knots at times, and smiling like an idiot at other times..
Here’s a quotation from Chapter Two, I thoroughly enjoyed: “. . . there were no King Arthurs left in the world, just Arthurs who expected to be treated like kings.”
If you love a good romance story with mystery and excitement around every corner, you will want to read this book for sure. 5 stars*

Mae Clair's excellent debut novel is a must read!!

All the reviewers praising Weathering Rock are right--this book is wonderful and engaging, and the author, Mae Clair, is an extraordinary wordsmith! How clever of Ms. Clair to so seamlessly weave together a story for paranormal lovers, fans of historicals (and/or the Civil War), time travel junkies, and contemporary romance readers. Her honor-driven hero Caleb DeCardian, cursed to turn into beast when the moon is full, is easy to fall in love with.

His beloved, Arianna Hart, is the extremely likeable and spunky modern woman, worthy of all Caleb has to go through to find true love in her arms. I especially love the treatment Ms. Clair gives to flesh out the relationships Caleb has with two other characters in this story. It’s quite beautiful to see the see the devotion and sacrifice Wyn DeCardian and another male character show our dear Caleb. You don’t often see the hero’s male friends so wonderfully showcased, and the author adds depth to the story by doing so. I won't give anything away, but I will say Ms. Clair’s attention to those attachments caused me tear up many times toward the end, and I probably would have gone into an all-out crying jag if I wasn't on a train full of grouchy commuters.

Weathering Rock is a fantastic read filled with fully-developed characters and an intriguing story line-but the star of the show is Ms. Clair’s writing—both pristine and poetically visual. While this is a debut, I'm betting this author already has fans eager and ready to purchase the next book from her-- and the next and the next. You just have a feeling this is a writer who knows how to deliver the goods! I understand the next book features Wyn. I’m eagerly awaiting its release!!

Long after finishing this book, I’m still in awe of how Mae Clair put together such a complex and sweet love story and executed it to perfection.

I love, LOVE this book!

I absolutely LOVED this book! Mae Clair is a wonderful writer. Her description of the scenery and characters brought to live the story in such vivid detail I could not stop reading. The characters in Weathering Rock were well developed and felt real. Clair's writing allowed me to feel an emotional connection to each character. The emotional connection is what makes a good book, an exceptional book. Of course, Weathering Rock is an exceptional read.

Caleb, a civil war hero...Wow...what an amazing leading man? I loved seeing him struggle with his old fashioned beliefs in the 21st century. Arianna, a passionate history teacher, still looking for the love of her life. They really were made for each other. After falling in love with Caleb, she discovers his secret time traveling by researching his family. I enjoyed the fact that some of her research was not disclosed to the reader immediately. It made the story even more intriguing because I kept turning each paging hoping the next page would provide me with all the answers. Without giving away any spoilers, I must admit I was blown away by the discovery of certain relative. All the supporting characters were excellent from Arianna's best friend to Caleb's relatives. Now the ending...I had such an intense emotional reaction, I actually cried tears of happiness and tears of sadness for all the characters.

I highly recommend everyone read Weathering Rock. It was amazing! My rating is 5 STARS!!!

The author provided me with a copy of the Weathering Rock for an honest review. Thank you Mae Clair for providing me with the opportunity to read this exceptional book!

This book has it all. Contemporary romance, historical fiction, time travel, werewolves… What more could you possible want! It’s this glorious combination that Mae Clair combines to tell a fascinating tale. I was hooked from page one and fell in love with all of the characters (well, except for that one dirt bag). Not only did Mrs. Clair enrapture me in this story, but I fell in love with the history and the civility of Mr. DeCardian. Men from his era were full of honor, pride, and chivalry, which none were lost on him when time travelled 149 years into the future to the 21 century with the curse of turning into a werewolf every full moon.

With plot twists on top of twists, I loved being able to put everything together piece by piece until I could finally wrap my head around how Caleb and Seth time travelled and how the horrible werewolf curse could possibly be resolved. The ending moved me to tears and though I was ready to get to the end… I didn’t want “their” story to end. (Once you read it, you’ll understand where I’m coming from here)

When an author has the ability to make me get invested into a character(s), feel for them as if they were my own friends, cry for their happiness or their loss; I know then that it was a great story with memorable characters.
Mae Clair has crafted a unique story, with such detail, that I could see everything unfolding in front me. Though I can’t possible imagine what could be in store for the next book of the DeCardian Family Chronicles series, I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

I highly recommend Weathering Rock to anyone who loves a awesome story!

Sweet & Romantic

History comes alive for middle-school teacher Arrianna Hart when a Civil War colonel crashes into her life (literally). Mae Clair ties together elements of time-travel, shifter curses, and a plotting villain with the tidy, satisfying bow of a happily-ever-after.

Weathering Rock is a great book for history lovers, romance addicts, shifter fans, and anyone looking for a few hours of escape.

We first meet Arianna when she literally runs into Caleb with her car. Well, she doesn’t run him over but its a close call. Ari tries to help Caleb who is muttering about meeting with Meade. When Caleb is finally coherent Ari finds out that he lives in the big plantation house of Weathering Rock. Ari drives Caleb home and meets his brother who helps Caleb in the house. When she tries to leave Arianna finds that she has a flat tire and must spend the night. This is the beginning of Ari and Caleb’s rocky romance.

Caleb pursues Arianna in a way that he knows he shouldn’t. He is after all a Colonel in the Union Army during the civil war and to spice things up more than that he is also a werewolf. Caleb knows that his life is currently unpredictable and terribly complicated. He is being threatened by his Alpha werewolf and former best friend, Seth Reilly. Though Ari begins to see some of the dangers that circle around Caleb she can’t help herself when his old-fashioned charms sneak passed her barriers. Soon Ari’s love of history collides with her present and she discovers at least part of Caleb’s secret. Even after her discoveries, Arianna still feels for Caleb and can’t resist him. It is then that their feelings for one another, their grasp on reality and the dangers around them collide in a tempest of Shakespearean proportions. Can Caleb and Ari keep their love together or will Caleb go back to the Civil War or worse will his rival werewolf find him and kill all he loves dear?

This was a wonderfully unique story. I’ve never read a story that has so many facets and fit so well together. It was quite an interesting mixture of history, romance and paranormal. The way Mae Clair wrote this story allowed for these pieces to fit together like a well made puzzle. But, it wasn’t just the elements that made this story unique. I think the layers that were built upon this unique foundations kept the story going. At first its Caleb’s secrets from Ari but just as those are solved then comes another aspect of Caleb’s past to come to both Ari and Caleb’s present time. This really was a fun read and you definitely fell in love with the handsome Colonel. How could you not with his looks and old-fashioned mannerisms that women don’t see today. I know most women like to read about the bad boy but in this story every women will fall for the wholesome good guy. Overall, this was a fantastic story and I can’t wait for Wyn’s story next. I hope it’s just as well written and multifaceted as this was.

If you like old-fashioned gentlemanly manners in a hot guy who just happens to turn into a werewolf once in a while, you will LIKE this book! Add in a little time travel, romance, action, history, a beautiful school teacher, a rich town playboy with a secret past, a love story or two, murder, and a villainous alpha werewolf and you will LOVE this book!

Colonel Caleb DeCardian, formerly of the Civil War, now of the 21st century because of a freak shower of 'ball lightning,' not only has to deal with the trauma of being thrust into the future, but turns all furry and dangerous every 29 days. He was cursed by a former friend to life as a werewolf. Add to that, the fact that said former friend also got sent to the 21st century, is also a more powerful werewolf and is out to kill Caleb, now hardly seems the time for Caleb to be falling in love, especially when he wants to go home to the 19th century without the hated curse.

Enter Arianna Hart, Civil War buff, school teacher, and everything Caleb could want. She is a force to be reckoned with, as well as sweet, spicy, and also attracted to Caleb.

Mae Clair has colored outside the lines in writing this book. Sure, there are a 'few' paranormal romances out there that 'may' mention time travel, werewolves, good guys, bad guys, stuff like that, but the way this book is put together will get under your skin from page one! A book like WEATHERING ROCK is why I love to read! The characters are lifelike, they have emotions, they have depth! The scenes are well-crafted and intense. There are twists and turns! There are moments that choked me up. There is one character in particular that completely took me by surprise in the best way!

WEATHERING ROCK is definitely a romantic, warm, feel-good tale with some of the most powerful scenes I have ever read! Did I mention 'didn't see that one coming' twists that grab at your heart?

Loved this book! Watching for more from this author!

Mae Clair was kind enough to offer this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Mae!

Mae Clair/ Weathering Rock
Arianna Hart has given up on finding true love until she runs Caleb DeCardin off the road. Really, who in their right mind goes horse back riding in the middle of the night? This odd behavior is only one of many of Caleb’s fine attributes. He claims to be a Colonel and despite his age, he has an air about him that only comes from being in charge. He knows all there is about the civil war and retells battle stories as if he was there on the field.

When Arianna discovers an old Civil War photo of a man who resembles Caleb so closely it’s uncanny, she starts to rehash every odd statement Caleb has uttered, until she cannot deny the truth. The man’s she’s fallen love with has somehow crossed the bridge of time. Only time travel is the least of Caleb’s problems. He’s been cursed to turn all hairy on the full moon and the only way he can break the curse is to kill his rival Seth Reilly. However, this alpha/time-traveler isn’t making it easy as he terrorizes the town and stalks Caleb. No one is safe, least of all Arianna.

Ms. Clair has cleverly woven a tale of romance and intrigue and added a historical flare along with the werewolf legend of old. Caleb is a hero that is noble and courageous to a fault, but he’s far from perfect, he’s also bossy and arrogant in his beliefs, but it’s the whole package that makes the reader fall in love with this man. Arianna is the woman who knows how to bring the best out in Caleb. If anyone is going to understand where this man came from, it’s Arianna, a historical Civil War buff and she won’t let him get away with bossing her around, Colonel or not.

I thoroughly enjoyed the twist and turns this paranormal story gave and was pleased in how it all came to a climatic conclusion.
This is a must read for all.

Beautifully Written
The words in this book roll off the tongue like poetry. Clair knows how to write setting (the writing is exquisite). As for the romantic hero, if you have a weakness for Southern, old style gentility mixed with the heady sensuality of a werewolf, you’ll like Caleb. I sped through this book, finding it very enjoyable, though the time travel elements did boggle my mind, so I tried not to think about that too much.

Arianna is a likeable female lead. She’s independent and knowledgeable with a deep interest in the Civil War. Ending up with a soldier who actually fought in the War was meant to be. Romance fans will not be disappointed by their love affair. Wyn and Lauren were also great characters. In fact, I felt more of an attraction to Wyn than I did to Caleb, so I’m delighted Wyn is the protagonist in the next Weathering Rock book.

And I smiled at the ref to Vincent Price!

Mae Clair has woven a story with the elements I love: paranormal, romance and mystery. She has even included that old werewolf classic!!
Arianna, the schoolmarm has given up on the idea of Mr. Right but some really intriguing guy enters her life quite strangely....some freak accident slams them together, literally!
Caleb is his name; he's the reluctant lover who was freakishly transported from the civil war era to the 21st century. The last thing on his mind is falling in love and wooing Arianna, but she is beautiful, and maybe it is their destiny(?)
Enough said.... but I will add this: Mae writes descriptively and weaves a picture with her words! You'll be quite entertained with the story and well crafted characters!
Enjoy everyone!

This was such a romantic story. I loved Caleb, the courtly Civil War colonel who traveled in time to the current century, where he meets the love of his life. I enjoyed every minute of his courtship of Arianna, as well as his confusion over how thoroughly modern women behave!

However, my favorite scenes were those with Caleb and his father. They were both time travelers at different points in time, and the scenes when they interact in the present time were incredibly poignant. I got misty-eyed reading these scenes -- and I thought their method of communicating during separations was brilliant.

Such a wonderful read!

The description in the first page of this book swept me away. It was luscious and haunting and gorgeous. Mae Clair certainly has a keen sense of beauty and mood in her descriptions, but that would not have carried me through the whole book. What propelled me through were the characters.

Caleb DeCardian is a werewolf and Civil War officer hurtled through time by an unexpected burst of ball lightning. (First off, ball lightning, very cool.) He is an honorable man, my favorite type of romantic hero, caught in a century he does not wish to remain in and trapped under the unbearable curse of lycanthropy.

Fortunately for Caleb, his many greats nephew, Wyn, discovers him and takes him in, claiming that they are brothers. Wyn is an awesome character. He is funny, plays extremely well off Caleb, and gives a lot of good foundation to Caleb's life and the story. If Mae Clair puts out further books featuring these characters, I have high hopes of Wyn being a fantastic and terribly funny hero.

However, when Arianna, public school history teacher, runs into Caleb with her car, a maneuver I thought quite fun as a means to hook up the romantic leads, things get interesting for Caleb. Not only can he no longer hide away from the 21st century, but Arianna knows enough about history to pick out all his oddities and identify him for who he really is if he's not extremely careful. But it's difficult to be extremely careful when you're falling in love with the girl who nearly hit you with her car and who trots you off to Gettysburg to help mind her students.

Add in a vengeance crazed alpha werewolf who wants to see Caleb suffer before he kills him, an extraordinarily well-done and satisfying father/son relationship that nearly made me cry, and a good dose of humor, and Weathering Rock is an enjoyable read. I'm looking forward to what the author comes out with next.

Arianna Hart is a middle-school teacher and civil war buff. One night, she meets Caleb by almost hitting him with her car, then having to give him a ride home. The sometime flashes of silver in his eyes, his courtly manners and his uncanny resemblance to the picture of a Union soldier point to secrets behind his golden-good looks. Those secrets may also keep them from happiness with each other.

Caleb DeCardian, a Colonel in the Union Army, has been transported to the present during a freak storm of ball lightening. The ball lightening seems to have something to do with his time travel. He has to adapt to this century and find Seth, who cursed him to live as a werewolf. Caleb does not even think of romance or sharing his secrets, but being nearly hit by Arianna’s car has him questioning both decisions now.

Caleb spends three years looking for Seth, until it is Seth who finds and taunts him with mutilated corpses. Seth has to be found–he is the one responsible for the curse, and Caleb also has to find a way back to his time. Arianna wonders if the love growing between them is enough to keep him in her century. And through it all, there is the mystery of the ball lightening…what is it for?

I have enjoyed reading this story. It is intriguing and has the bonus of being entertaining. If time travel coupled with a werewolf curse is fascinating, adding the mystery of the ball lightening gives the story extra twists. Things are not over done or over contrived. The story and relationships open up easily while reading. The smooth pace makes it possible to get into the story and savor reading it more than once

What happens on a stormy night when a current day school teacher hits a soldier on horse back from the 1800's with her car? Why, an adventure, of course!

In Mae Clair's debut novel, she introduces us to Arianna Hart, a school teacher with a passion for history, and Caleb DeCardian, gorgeous werewolf soldier from the Civil War era. Though Caleb is embroiled in a dangerously fatal cat and mouse game with a nemesis who time travelled into the future with him, he's drawn to Arianna. He knows he shouldn't pursue her. They're from two different worlds. Literally. Obviously, he's got secrets.

Mae does a fantastic job of weaving a tale of danger, excitement and time travel with endearing romance. The unique way with which she approaches time travel was as interesting as the way she blended past and present into a seamless tale.

If you love shape shifters, romance, and suspense... Pick up Weathering Rock. You won't want to put it down.

I haven't read much paranormal romances lately, but Weathering Rock made me rethink my reading choices. Weathering Rock started out fast and kept going. I enjoyed the characters and I bought into the whole time travel aspect of the story. The author had a few twists that surprised me but made total sense. What really surprised me was how much I enjoyed this paranormal romance and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys romance, or just a good story with a twist.

Very sweet and romantic. Terrific characters that felt like people I could know in real life and cared about, and well written story. It drew me in, chapter by chapter, revealing everything slowly, while at the same time investing me more and more in these people's lives. Absolutely loved it.
