The pieces on the board are in motion and with both sides gathering strength, each move will be critical. When the Truthers make a play for checkmate, the Seeders are forced to respond. Fi and her companions will face greater challenges and higher stakes than ever before, because this time if they fail, it's for keeps.
Ah, it’s so nice to re-connect in real life with the people we learn to love and appreciate and the same is true with the book series we read. Fi and Asher, Sara and Sean, and many of their friends have stuck in my mind and it was a real pleasure to see them again. I have also enjoyed getting to know certain other characters better than I did before, Seeders like Squeak , Darryl and Julius and even some of the Truthers, as unpleasant as they are. After all, to truly understand the two bitterly opposing sides, you first need to understand why they have become that way.
For my earlier reviews of the first two books, Eden’s Root and Seeds of War, go here.
I came across one thing fairly early on that alarmed me a bit in the depiction of the ultra-religious side, a feeling that the author’s treatment was overly harsh, making it seem as though there are no good aspects to religion. Ms. Fisher soon showed a different approach to the subject in one small but significant scene and I realized I was wrong about her intent. One other issue bothered me a little; the post-partum depression that Fi experiences is rooted in reality and I felt her descent into a personal hell, really felt it. The problem for me came when she recovered because it was just too immediate. Yes, some very good news was the impetus for her coming out of it but it happened too fast and completely for me to believe.
Putting that aside, Ms. Fisher has once again crafted a story that grabbed my attention in the very beginning and never let go until the end. Continuing with the theme of what can happen when genetic manipulation runs amok, the Seeders and the Truthers finally confront each other over how the world will go forward now that billions have perished thanks to the destruction of most of the food supply. Was war between the two sides inevitable? Yes, I believe so, for a number of reasons, not least of which is humanity’s propensity for hatred of ideas that are different. We don’t do very well at accommodating each other’s positions or accepting that there is not just one correct way of life, do we? Ms. Fisher has done a masterful job of bringing her young characters to a point where maturity (perhaps born of great necessity) is now allowing them to be judicious even while their passions have not abated a bit. When their home is attacked and their friends and family put at great harm, Fi, Asher, Sean and Sara have only one goal in mind: to make it all right. How they will do that and still retain their own honor is at the heart of this conclusion to a captivating post-apocalyptic trilogy.
And about that ending…did I love it? Yes, heartbreak and all, but I also hated it because I don’t want to let go of these people. It’s a suitable ending, no doubt, and it wraps things up nicely, letting the readers feel a sense of completion but I have high hopes that we’re going to see these folks again considering the discovery that Asher makes in the last pages. Please, Ms. Fisher, tell us more!
Completing another series, I found this story to be exciting and fun to read.
Plot: This story pick up where the last book left off. Both Fi and Asher are fighting against time to get back to their home. In the midst of all of that, they are fighting nature as well. I think the plot flowed well with excitement and adventure. Each chapter gave the reader more information about the world collapsing, the food and of course the ones who started the rebellion.
Love: Fi and Asher go through some pretty heavy stuff as being a such a young age. They already have to endure the world falling apart and now they are trying to save it. I like how well these two grew together and not apart. When they needed each other, they were there. They put everything aside just to make sure the other was okay. I really loved how well they communicated and the strength they give each other.
Earth: Once I finish reading this story it got me thinking about food. It is true that most of the food I eat is well…not even real. It’s bagged and processed and who knows if what I’m eating is effecting my body. Maybe it even cause the Autism in my son. *Shrugs* I’ll never know. What I do know is that I made a personal goal to eat more real food. I plan on visiting my local farmers market and picking out fresh vegetables and fruits with the family. It’s a start.
Overall, Emergence is fine ending to a great series. It brings out all the truth, tying up each loose end nicely. It gives hope to the reader with the first sign of green. A remarkable ending, Emergence is wonderful
Amazing! MY REVIEW I won a twitter competition run by the author Rachel E. Fisher, so that's how I received my signed paperback book. So again thank you to Rachel E Fisher! I must admit upon first receiving the paperback and looking at the cover my first thought was "oh no" as I think the cover is a lot like the Lauren Oliver cover for Pandemonium. Having said the, this cover does fit the book. The girl with the flame red hair on the cover is Fionnaula Marie Kelly Grey. This girl has literally been turned from a normal everyday girl with home comforts to a warrior fighting to survive in the wastelands. The fire on the front and back cover also represent the fire that occurs during a battle covered in the book. There is also the red hand print with the T in the centre that represents the Truthers. I love the byline, "I'm Coming To For You" which is something that Fi is saying to herself to keep herself going in the war against the Truthers. It's kind of like her war cry chanting to herself as she and her band of friends are after Carter. It also fits when Fi is trying to rescue the imprisoned Eden dwellers. So would the cover alone make me pick up this book? Oh yes, its attractive and eye catching! I must say having read books, one and two there was no way I was not going to read book three to find out what happened. So we left the second book where Fi had finally decided the only way to "survive" the Truthers was to tackle them head on. The four seeders, Fi, and husband Ash and Sara and Sean are travelling back to Eden. Upon arriving at Eden they know somethings wrong (I won't say how as you should discover that by reading the book) With all the upset and craziness going on around it is no wonder that the pregnant Fi goes into labour. With no one else available Sara becomes the midwife with the boys, Asher and Sean banished from the room. So the baby is born. I won't say how it turns out whether baby survives, survives how long or not. But I will say I love the name given to the little one. It's . . .well it's perfect. So this book is about Eden and it's friends coming together to free the captured and imprisoned Eden dwellers from "Father" Carter and his army of "angels" (the lobos). This book has plenty of action and angst. The Eden warriors think they have everything worked out but as the general who come sto help explains when they are planning "there is always something unexpected". Yep it's sure unexpected and its doing lots of damage and hindering their cause and action. This "surprise" has to gotten rid of, a distraction is needed, who/what will do the dangerous job? Although the fight is supposed to stay as peaceful as possible, and the lobos are to be given a choice, surrender or die, it's inevitable that their are deaths. Some fantastic characters die in this book. There's a scene in the book where two of the main characters are paying their respects to the dead and your heart literally breaks with them as they say a final goodbye to their fallen comrades. Then there's after the fight, after the respects are paid to the dead "life" has to be picked up again and go on and adapt to the changes that have taken place. I know you may think my review slightly cryptic but seriously, you have to read this book series each and every one of the three main books are fantastic! (I haven't had chance to read the prequel as it's has only been available in the US but I think it's now available in the UK too. so that will be my next download!). Then there's the final page in the book and wow the ending is, well one of the characters is described as being "choked" as in "choked with emotion" and you the reader are also "choked" yet "stoked" with them. The end is perfection! We the reader have the fact of how things have moved on and changed and then that final part is just brilliant. So did I enjoy this book? YES! I loved it, I loved the whole series! but this being the last book? Maybe there could be a novella centred around what happens at the very end of the book? I also want to read the prequel novella to this series now too. It is a rarity that I re-read books but I honestly think I could re-read and re-enjoy this series of books! Would I recommend this book? Definitely! I recommend the whole series. Would I read more in this Series? This was the last book in the series but I do intend on reading the prequel and I'd love there to be a spin off novella maybe set a couple of years later and around what happens on the last page on the book. Would I read more books by Rachel E Fisher? Yes I would try more books by Rachel, for sure. I have loved how this series has been written. I've loved the characters, the plot, the pace of the book, basically I've loved all of all of the books lol!
First of all a huge thanks to Rachel Fisher for providing me with a copy of this book! I have to say I was hooked to this trilogy since book one and I was kind of sad to see it end…but what an ending it was! Emergence picks up right where we left of. I don’t want to give anything away and spoil thing for readers so let’s just say that a lot happens for the characters in that one. Fi allows herself to be darkened in a way we never thought she could and this have a direct impact on Asher since she turn away from him for a while I can’t say I was surprised about that, she’s been through so much already I always thought it was only a matter of time before she broke a little bit, let’s be realist here she’s just a kid who had to grow up fast and she had almost no reprieve since the beginning. It’s hard for somebody that young to be the rock of so many people. Plus everytime she start thinking that she might settle down and start living a more normal life something happens and she have to stand up again and try to save the day. Rachel have a very vivid way of describing her world and the characters in it. I loved the way Sean & Sarah relationship developed, they both went thought a lot and it’s nice to see them having some well-deserved happiness. As for Asher and Fi I’ve been a fan since the first book and I enjoyed all the moments they managed to steal together as well as them just working as a team and working or the biggest challenge ever…being parent! We learn a whole lot about the Truthers and their leader Lawson. We really went inside his head and understand why he’s so intend at destroying everything related to this new society. I disliked him a lot but like any well written villain the author manage to make him human and almost likable. I don’t approve what he did but I can understand his motive. I think this book is a great way to see the world from a different perspective. It reminds us that we need to be aware of what’s going on around us and not blindly accept everything we are told like it’s a sure fact. As for the epilogue I can only hope Rachel is planning on giving us a little novella because it’s killing not to know what happened after that! I’m looking forward to what she will write next, related to this trilogy or not!
Oh my. Fi and the gang went out with a bang. What a fantastic end to a great trilogy. I want to do this book justice and leave a detailed review, but I really hate putting spoilers in my reviews! Let's see...
Fi and her crew are on their way home when they realize Eden's radio has gone silent. Upon arriving, they find that the Truthers have hit them where it hurts, and hard. It's almost too much for the gang to handle, but they manage to make a plan and see it through. If you read book 2, you know that Fi is very pregnant at this point and will give birth. Her delivery and first couple of weeks as a new mother brought back so many memories of my son's delivery and the first couple of months for me. Of course, I had a much easier time than Fi, since I didn't have to deal with the devastated world and religious fanatics threatening the people I love! Fi had a rough time, and it was hard seeing her so weak and vulnerable, but it also showed that she IS just human and sometimes the pressures of being a total badass can just be too much.
The glimpses into Lawson's mind were fantastic, though it made me see him a bit more sympathetically than I wanted. I'm guessing that was intentional, since Fi has always been about nonviolence and sympathy, but I just wanted to write him off as a psycho using religion as a means to domination.
The relationships Fi has with the members of her Family and the fierce loyalty she feels toward Eden were heartwarming and very touching, and Rachel Fisher's writing - through all three books - made me feel like I was a member of this Family, too. I laughed quite a bit, and I teared up a few times, too. Near the end, tragedy strikes and my heart almost broke, but Fi and her Family push on, hellbent on reseeding the earth and making it inhabitable again. The epilogue was great, and I was pleased to see Fi and Asher get their happy ending - or beginning.
I’ve never thought I would be looking forward to the ending to a series as much as this one. This dystopian novel drew me in from the start with it’s believable story of how a world changed by just having a few changes done to food we grow.
This book picks up where the last book took off, where Fi, Asher, Sean and Sarah are getting back to Eden. This time they find out something is wrong and the Truthers are behind it. I never thought I would hate a bad group of people as much as I do with the Truthers. They cause so much trouble for Fi and the gang that the ending is everything you hope to read. What surprised me the most of the plot was the help they got from lots of people. Not just the normal people they talk to on the walkie talkies but people they’ve never seen before. Plus a man who we first saw in the first book but never thought to see him again. Not to mention a five years later part will leave us all happy for Asher.
Fi has always been strong from Eden’s Root to Seeds of War, but in the newest and last book of this series we see a new side of her. Might be because she’s pregnant, but it doesn’t slow her down. Until they reach Eden then all hell breaks lose and it looks like Fi is at her weakest point we have ever seen her. She can only think of the worse things possible causing both her to break and Asher not knowing what to do. It’s Sean who really surprised me as he picked up the lead role and lead both him and Sara Off to find the missing Eden members.
Though I’ve come to love Fi and Asher and the rest I know this book had a great ending that made me happy. I just hope this world never happens I would like to think we can continue living in a world where the food we eat doesn’t lead to disease. I’m diffidently going to read more from this author.
From the time I picked up the first book in this trilogy, I was hooked. And, as much as I love the other books, I think Emergence is the crowning book of the three.
Emergence picks up right where we left off. A quick recap: So far, the world has fallen apart, a young girl (Fi) had to lead her Family to safety - becoming a formidable warrior in the process. Then she became a Seeder, trying to bring the world back to life, and to allow those things which grow in the earth to be wholesome.
I'm really not big on spoilers, so forgive me if I don't give you many details. :) What I can say is this:
Fi and Asher have a lot to deal with. Things get bad enough that Fi allows herself to be darkened in a way she's (amazingly) avoided before now. And that almost kills Asher. (Okay, not physically, but still. He suffers.)
No one is safe in this book. Everyone suffers something, and since I love these characters as my own friends, it's hard.
We learn a whole lot more about Lawson - the leader of the Truthers. We get inside his head and understand why he's trying to destroy the people who are intent on rebuilding society. And, as any great villain is, he's sympathetic in his own way.
As expected, we get a final battle. Ms. Fisher outdid herself with this one!
The trilogy definitely goes out with a bang, and if you haven't read it yet, you need to. It leads you to consider things in the world from a different perspective, and challenges society's acceptance of things, reminding us not to blindly follow leaders, and to educate ourselves about what's going on around us.
First off I have to give a huge I mean HUGE Thank You to Rachel Fisher for giving us a great series. I have been reading this series since day one and this is a bitter sweet goodbye to a wonderful series that crafted a world where it makes you think that what happened to Fi and Asher could happen to use any day. So if you have been following the series you know that the government has been poisoning the food and people are dying. This outrages Fi and she is determined to stop all of this madness.
Once she uncovers what the government knows she and her family seek out safety. But is any where safe because the government has eyes and ears every where? Together Fi and Asher who is her best friend are fighting to get back to their home but they have one thing against time. Time is running out and they know it but together they are trying to save the world. If fighting the government is not bad enough they have to fight mother nature and her ravishing weather she is doling out. Will Fi and Asher be able to save the world in time is the ultimate question?
In each chapter the world is built upon and the questions you have will be answered. You will see the world collapsing around them and you will find out more about the foods and the reason the government did what it did.
This is a must MUST read series about a dystopian world that could happen to our world.
What a fabulous end to an Apocalyptic trilogy. This story is just so intense, it drags the emotion from you whether you like it or not!
If you have yet to read books one and two, I have to say these should not be read out of order. There is so much in Emergence that you won’t know about. And I accidentally started book two without realizing and was completely confounded until I realized I skipped book one! Definitely start with the first and enjoy the growth.
And speaking of growth, the characters that were built upon in the last two books have grown dramatically. I mean they really didn’t have a choice, but really, seeing the Fi in this book is such a great thing. She and Sara are totally my favorites but all of the characters are fabulous.
The only thing that didn’t resonate completely with me was near the ending. As we get close there is a bit of fighting and that portion wasn’t my favorite but was definitely coming, so I understand but kind of skimmed through that.
But other than that, the entire series was amazing! I love Rachel Fisher’s writing and the things she thinks about during an apocalypse is extraordinary. Multiple times my heart literally stopped for fear or out of love for this fabulous storyline.
Wow! What a ride! Look if I'm dingy today, I blame Rachel Fisher. This book started out rolling and didn't stop. Real life got in my way, or I would've finished this in a day or so. Somewhere around 60%, it felt slower but that was the calm before the storm. I figured last night. I'd start reading it midnight and I would fall asleep. The sun was well up in the sky for two hours before I fell asleep. I could not put the book down. I wanted to know what was going to happen to Fi and her friends.
I gave this five stars because, as usual, Ms. Fisher told a wonderful tale. But I noticed that somewhere around 60% of the book, there were a few mistakes words left out or tiny misspellings. The other thing that really bothered me and I know this is just me, how did Fi deal with dirty diapers? I've had four kids. I could not have fought a war with any one of them hanging from me. I know Fi is a really strong woman. But somehow I have a hard time grasping a woman who just gave birth and running 3 miles with her baby in the backpack. It just seems rather impossible to me. But that doesn't stop the story. And it is an amazing one. Maybe I missed something in reading it.
I love the ending! I will have to reread the trilogy again as I miss this great bunch of characters!
The final book in the Eden's Root series. After all the people of Eden are taken by the "Truthers," our heroes make a plan to rescue their family and friends while simultaneously exposing Dr. Lawson for who he really is.
A fantastic ending to the series. The book picks up where we left off. I think it has a great mix of characters. We really get a feeling for who most of the characters are. There is even a bit of sympathy for some bad guys, which I think is real life. Most people are not 100% bad or good.
My only complaint...and I admit it is a nitpick...is one mistake that I saw in another book but honestly can't remember if it was by this author or another. When the main character (Fi) talks about her state of mind and that, although things are calm, her body is tense as if she is still at DEFCON 5. I know this sounds bad, but DEFCON 5 is actually the lowest level and basically means everything is peachy keen. This in no way ruins the story, but is one of my nitpicks about authors using terms incorrectly.
Great book and I look forward to reading more by this author!!
This book was definitely helped the trilogy go out with a bang! The first half of the book is pretty depressing, but that is to be expected in Fi's world. She has finally reached her limit & it was hard to see her really struggle after all that she has been through. But of course she snaps out of it and becomes herself again. The journey through this book changes her in the end, so many things make her grow up even more. There were quite a few times that Asher broke my heart, poor guy I can imagine how how hard things were on him. Both he & Fi are still pretty BA & I love that about them. I loved all the moments they managed to steal together as well as them just working as a team & being parents. I loved the relationship between Fi & Sara because they are both so awesome. Sean & Sarah area a fun couple too! There was no shortage of action or heartbreak as the series came to end. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series & was completely satisfied with the ending. I loved the epilogue as well.
I LOVED this book. I had a hard time putting this book down. The author did an AMAZING job in bring the story and characters to life. You feel like you really get to know Fi, Ash, Sean and Sara. I also believe that this book hits home with me and our lifestyle because my husband and I are preppers. We prepare for the worst case senario, we have stored canned goods and even a bucket of food. We are working on saving heirloom seeds to plant again in garden next year. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes reading books that are apocalypse or end of world stories.
Emergence is the final book in a great dystopian trilogy that explores a world ravaged by the blighting effects of genetic manipulation. It is great ending to a well written, exciting series. It has action aplenty(as we have come to expect from our warrior Fi), a harrowing battle for truth against religious zealots, love, loyalty and loss ... this has it all.
Well done Rachel Fisher on a thoroughly thought-provoking and well rounded series.
This is actually my first review from thousands of books that I've read in my life, but I felt I owed it to Ms. Fisher after reading this series. This isn't even a series of books that I would have ever read. I'm usually more into the supernatural type books.
It started out as a complete accident reading the first book Eden's Root. I was stuck at the airport with a very long delayed layover and I added it to my Kindle without reading what it was about. It just seemed like a good title and I liked the cover. So I thought it would waste some time while I was waiting for my flight.
The story grabbed me right from the start. The writing style was so easy to keep up with and was soothing. (Many people wouldn't use the word "soothing", but I'm sure some of you know what I mean.) Right before I was getting on the plane, I hurried and added the rest of the series to my Kindle before I lost wifi. I usually like to sleep on flights because, you know, if you fall asleep, the sooner you get there. :D This is the first time I can say I actually stayed up the entire 9 hour flight and read the first and part of the second book. I was captured.
During our holiday, I spent the first day reading almost non stop. Finally the husband said enough is enough and threatened to take away my book if I didn't put it down. :O!!
So I did take a break and waited until we got back home before starting the last book. I've just finished it and all I can say is... WOW. For me that is a big deal. I'm very hard to please and not many books get a WOW from me.
I loved all the characters and especially Fi. Ms. Fisher has a way of making everyone in the book feel like they are part of your family. I almost cried when I read the last sentence. Not because it was happy or sad, but because I didn't want it to be over.
I know book reviews are supposed to be about the story, but I hate spoiling anything for anyone so I won't say anything about the story. This review is more for those readers out there who aren't usually open to new genres.
I would tell you to please give this book a chance. Yes it is a dystopia type book and there is no "magic or fae or vampires". The characters are young, but I still wouldn't fully classify this as a young adult book. Adults would easily love this book as well.
I want to say thank you to Rachel Fisher for opening my eyes to a new type of experience that I wouldn't have normally chosen. Thank you for the laughs and the tears and thank you for the time you took to write it. You have definitely become one of my top 10 authors and I will be there with you now throughout your journey.
Not gonna lie, I forgot this was on my kobo. Was supposed to read it forever ago but.. I guess it slipped my mind. Found it when I was making a to-read shelf on my kobo, and just had to finish the series. Remember how awesome the first two books were? This book was just as awesome. Fi has a baby, there's a big war, and everything's awesome at the end. This was an awesome ending to the series, although, I wish there was more. But I guess you have to end it sometime, right? I also have to say that a little part of me wanted Sean to die during the war, for some reason. I felt like it was time another one of the main characters died. Luckily, that didn't happen. Everyone was happy and healthy at the end and that made me happy. Loved it. If you haven't read the series before, I definitely recommend it. It's epic. :D
