Haunted by the recent loss of her father and the family estate, Charlotte Covington boards the greatest ocean liner in the world only to discover her mother intent on match making. It is not the young wealthy bachelor Charlotte soon fancys, though. Rather it is the intriguing after hours doctor whose presence sets her heart aflutter. A date with destiny, however, will reveal the doctor's true nature and leave Charlotte with only one hope to survive tragedy.
I am working on the 4th book in my "Begotten Bloods" series. Thankful for every book review. My blog is mostly about life, travels and food in Holland where I live as an expat.
Seventeen-yr-old Charlotte Covington and her mother have left jolly ol’ England for the United States of ‘Murica. On the Titanic. Ok, we all know where this story is heading, right? But this has a bit of a twist in the form of Dr. Henry Beckwith. The good Doctor is more than just a doctor and researcher. And on the fateful night, Charlotte is about to find out what, exactly, he is.
This story starts out 4 days prior to the Titanic’s date with an iceberg and is told from Charlotte’s POV. She and her mother have no prospects after Charlotte’s father dies so they are heading to America to live with her uncle. When her mother becomes ill and the ship’s Dr. is overtaxed, Dr. Beckwith, a passenger, offers to take up some of the slack. And thus he and Charlotte cross paths. I have to admit, there is some suspense even though I knew perfectly well what happened to the Titanic. Hmmm…maybe it’s because I know exactly what was coming that I felt on edge as Charlotte becomes smitten with Henry. Will the characters I met survive? *bites nails* Other than dragging a bit for me, this well-written short is a good start in what appears to be a Begotten Blood series. I’ll need to look further into those books.
I can't tell you exactly what it was about this book that kept my interest, but it ended all to quickly! When I got to the 'to be continued...' I was really hoping for the next part to be available already. Sadly no, there is another book in the series out, but it's all new characters.
The story was good, though it never hinted at vampires until the very end and then you are just left hanging. All in all it was an enjoyable couple of hours spent reading. :) I would gladly read the continuation of their story if it ever comes out.
The novella wasn't really that bad, the characters, Charlotte and Henry are likable enough. My problem with the story was maybe that I thought it would be a stand alone novella (many are) and the ending. I read this because it was considered historical but I didn't really get that feel and when the titanic sank I didn't feel the panic and desparation or even feel anything at all except a little confusion. It's even possible that if the title of the book didn't have the word vampire in it I may not have gotten the story at all. The end also left me hanging and since I have no intention of reading the Begotten Bloods series I will probably continue to be left hanging. I read the forward and a little of the initial chapter of the 1st novel of Begotten Bloods and it just didn't do anything for me. Besides it didn't even mention the 2 characters in this novella but maybe I missed it. I like Charlotte and I like Henry and maybe if it had been longer and little less like The Historian in that you are always guessing and waiting for something to happen maybe I would feel a little different. I really don't even feel much disappointment.
I am not a vampire fan. That said this is a great short story, without a fang in sight King leads you on a merry chase and the most outrageous outcome you cannot imagine. A fun read.
I think this makes it a good historical & paranormal book. It captured the moments before the Titanic sank and it shows the exact dates to which the story took place
