Chicago is gone, completely obliterated, and with it, tens of thousands of lives have been wiped out. The guilt of this threatens to crush Dez, but he can't afford to buckle. War has come, and Huginn is relying on Dez to help lead the army. Layla, about to have their baby, is relying on him too.
Dez is faced with not only fighting a war, but with confronting the demons within his own mind and soul, as well as the greatest threat of all, his own body. The power in his arm responsible for the destruction of Chicago threatens to destroy not only everyone he loves, but everyone who comes near him.
Bummer. The first one was sooo good. I didn't hate this one. It was just OK at best. If you really liked the action part of the series then that's most of the takeaway for this one. There is some development, but I really just wanted to be done with it about half way through. That's not a good sign for such a short book.
If you saw my review of the first book, I was quite frustrated that the second book had been pulled and could not be found anywhere. I finally emailed the author about it. Jack Sheppard is doing a complete rewrite of the first two books and combining them. So who knows, the end product could be awesome. Since he was gracious enough to send me the 2nd book to hold me over I will most certainly support him in this novel and check out the completed project.
To start off, if you haven't read the first novella of this series this book won't make much sense to you as a stand-alone read. You will need to read The Marlowe Transmissions: Scavenger's Warfirst.
This is a nice continuation of the Scavenger series, and the author does a good job of getting you into the head of the main character, and the futuristic scenes with the author's version of reality are believable with a couple of exceptions. Similar to the first novella in the series I found myself thinking about in my own Walter Mitty type of moment what I wish I could do today with some of the predicted technology of the future.
The action scenes are very good and will get your pulse racing a little bit as the author continues his great job of having you feel as if you are right in the middle of the action, and this one is a bit more bloody than book one of the series. Without having a spoiler, the story does drag here and there with some of the changes happening to the Dez character.
Similar to the first in the series, this one was a little hard to put down.
Wow! Such an awesome series so far. Very tough to put down. The writing plunged me right into the midst of the battles and also got to understand the characters with good visual clarity. Looking forward to the third book!
