Sometimes love comes sooner rather than later—or worse, sometimes not at all. Then that’s when life isn’t worth living. As a foster kid, the only people Ryder could rely on were Jensen, his good friend and foster brother, and their foster mother, Mrs. Wilson. Now that they are grown up, Ryder has become a medic, while Jensen has become a fireman. When Jensen gets injured on the job and is taken to St. Michael’s ER, the last thing Ryder expects to meet when he rushes to the hospital is the very sexy Doctor Nelson, who is not only all man, but gay. Just as Dr. Nelson and Ryder begin to know each other better, Ryder’s foster mother dies. While Ryder tries to keep up with his new relationship, work, plus grieving, the stress soon overwhelms him. Will Ryder be able to find help in time, or will he lose his one piece of happiness before he can make it last?

After the last rater deceiving installment in this series, Blamestorming came as a quite nice surprise. The introduction scene featuring Ryder – one of the main characters – and his brother Jensen was very catchy and I immediately felt very close to these two. Ryder has gone through foster care for many years, before finally finding a new home and Jensen. However, he is still feeling very unsecure and is quickly feeling worthless.
When Nelson, a very intelligent and incredibly sexy doctor shows his interest in Ryder, he is first unwilling to believe that such a man could really be interested in him. Nelson – supported by his huge family is not willing to let Ryder get away with his insecurities and they are soon starting an (of course) insta-lust/insta-love relationship.
The ending might have been a little to much due to the fact that if felt completely unbelievable in my opinion. But I really liked the focus on Ryder and his brother Jensen. I would love to find out more about Jensen and how he might or might not overcome the problems he is facing during the book. For once, I would really love to see him as a main character of one of the upcoming books, but a look at the blurbs doesn’t make it look likely.
I’m still looking forward to the last three installments of this series.
This was one of the better books in this series and I liked the characters. That being said, I'm not sure why I keep reading this series. Each "book" is more like a quick snippet. They are too short for any serious development. Ryder's brother was being a real tool so I supposed Jameson's book is next. Is that his brother's name? I forget already and I just finished this book last night. I liked Nelson but the quick insta-love that these books are forced into because of the length just isn't enough for me. Will I buy the next book? Probably.
I keep reading this series and it is almost pretty much same song different verse, but I still keep coming back for more. Nelson the Dr from a huge loving, perfect family falls ( at lightning speed) for Ryder, the foster home EMT. It's sweet and cute and already has a set up for Jenson in the next book.
This one fell more in line with what I'm used to from this author.
A sweet but emotional read, to short to really do it justice. A typical love story with the usual self doubts showing up. Obviously there's another story coming to deal with Jensen, who will have to work hard to convince me he is not a big jerk.
Overall a simple quick read but slightly more filling than the last book. Of course this one also has the standard all seeing all knowing female that demands answers instead of just asking, but luckily she only has a minor role.
Another nice little story. I know what I'm getting into when I start these little novellas so no critism from me. I enjoy a non-complicated story once in a while and that's what you get with this entire series. I just can't stop reading them! Addicted. :D
I’m reviewing this entire series in one go because they all have similar themes. Each book is short and sweet – little bite-sized stories when you want to pick up something quick to read (I read each one in one sitting).
This is one of those series (previously called St Michael’s) that centres on a group of men who work in emergency services. It is a glorious combination of EMTs, firemen, nurses, doctors…
Each book is relatively short (<100 pages) and make the perfect quick read when you want something short but enjoyable. Each book has a fairly emotional theme – these guys have been abused, hurt in the past, rejected by their families, and any manor of other things that have left them feeling scared and vulnerable but each man finds his partner, someone to love them for who they are and to teach them about trust.
For such serious topics, there isn’t a lot of time to delve into each story in depth but there is just enough heartache and working through issues to reach a happy ending. Okay, so most seem a little unrealistic – love at first sight, overcoming issues quickly and even the over-abundance of gay guys in the town – but I read this series for a light enjoyment so didn’t mind a bit!
You can read the blurb to find out more about each story so I have included a little quote from each book to give a sense of the style...
#1 Running Hot “Running to him, Calvin threw his arms around James and pulled him into a rib-crushing hug. They had a huge audience, but he didn’t give a damn.”
#2 Man Down “I told myself I couldn’t get close to you because I didn’t want any complications in my life. That I didn’t have time for a relationship because of school and stuff. The truth is, I didn’t want to grow attached to you because I can’t stand to lose someone else who I care about.”
#3 Lights and Sirens “Unlike Gary, Matt happened to be good looking on the inside too.”
#4 Priority One “This was it. Finally Dylan would be able to know what it felt like to be with another man. After tonight, there’d be no more lingering doubts. No more false hopes that maybe he’d been wrong all along and wasn’t gay and could make things right back home. If he did this, actually went through with it, these would be no question of what he was. “
#5 Code Blue “He wondered how this little brat had managed to mean so much to him in just the span of a day.”
#6 Red Lights and Silver Bells “Kaleb gaped at him in shock. Even after all these months of having to deal with Dylan’s insecurities, it still shocked Kaleb every time he realized just how little his lover thought of himself. If it was anyone who could have their pick of men, it was Dylan.”
#7 High Flow “Since he’d gotten away with touching him earlier, Patrick allowed himself to reach out and cup Forrest’s face. When the younger man briefly closed his eyes and turned into the touch, a thrill of victory went through Patrick. That’s it, babe, open up to me. It’s safe, I promise. Since he knew it was too early to speak those words aloud, Patrick simply went with, “I want you because you’re Forrest. I wouldn’t change a thing about you because you’re perfect the way you are”
#8 Three-Alarm Fire “Why it’s so easy to tell you things that I could never share with anyone else. It’s because you know what it’s like to be hurt by someone you love. You understand me in ways that nobody else could.”
#9 Shades of the Past “As Kiefer’s body seemed to mold into his side, Ray became aware of two things. One, that Kiefer made for a perfect fit. Second came the startling realization that Ray would do anything to protect the medic from being hurt again.”
#10 In His Hero’s Shadow “I don’t want to get hurt,” Brody finally admitted. “I know I’m not good enough for you and that it will only be a matter of time before you figure that out for yourself and dump me.”
#11 Life Over Limb “Nah, he was just being nice. There is no way in hell a guy that good-looking could be interested in me.”
#12 FUBAR “The victim finally looked up and Danny sucked in a breath as he found himself instantly attracted to the other man. Damn it though, he knew he shouldn’t be having that reaction, after all, this guy barely avoided being viciously attacked. The last thing he needed was his would-be rescuer drooling over him.”
#13 Status Dramaticus “Are you even listening to me?” Ah, no. I was too busy drooling over you and imagining how it would feel to have you fuck me into the mattress.
#14 Tagged and Bagged ”The good think about Housten being asleep, aside from the fact his mouth was shut, was that he wasn’t aware of how sappy Rich was being. And Rich was being sappy with a capital S.”
#15 Blamestorming “Intrigued because I’m gay and working in such an alpha dominated field, or because you’re interested in me for something more than a friend?”
#16 Circling the Drain ”Would you think I sound young and dorky if I said that if I wasn’t careful I could fall in love with you?”
#17 STAT “For some reason, Wells felt a flash of jealously over Jaret being so close to another man. Which was crazy. He and Jaret weren’t even friends, much less in a relationship.”
#18 City of Fire “Awww….you better watch it, people will say we’re in love.” “I see that you’ve been watching Oklahoma again.” “What can I say, I’m just a guy who can’t say no.”

The main characters in this latest instalment of EMS heat are another paramedic and doctor combo with the paramedic being embraced by his doctors large family
Here’s one aspect I wish to pick apart concerning this book.
Nelson is thirty and the youngest son among twelve kids. The oldest sister has a toddler child. Their father is in his mid-sixties and their mother ten years younger than him. Ergo she is about fifty-five now, thus gave birth to Nelson at the age of twenty-five. And had no more sons after that. Now, maybe she had all her sons first and then started on the girls, except for that eldest daughter. I’m just saying that even if Nelson came smack in the middle of those twelve kids she’d have had to pop out a baby each year. And that’s still using the most favourable and unlikely variables. Mom, the baby-machine, I guess.
Also. A doctor should not get touchy-feely when flirting with an EMT he barely met before, while they’re standing right in the middle of the ER. It’s just inappropriate and unprofessional.
Sex on the first date is par for the course in this series. And “date” is sometimes overstating it, really. But in this case it’s at least an actual one.
This series also really likes to jump the gun into relationships. People often decide that this is going to be the lasting relationship to build their life around usually by the time they undress for their first time to have sex or at the very least afterwards. Often, though, they even figure it out before, and usually that happens without knowing the other person much at all. Just watching them and thinking how sexy and attractive someone is doesn’t exactly make for a solid foundation.
Finally, the ending is way too pat. Meh.
So here you have it. This volume felt kind of pointless and unbelievable.
I know these books are short, but this one felt really unfinished. What happened to those who set Ryder's foster mom's house on fire? Did Ryder and Jensen work things out betweem them eventually or they just split up for good? What Jensen and his new vigilante buddies had been up to? So many questions left unanswered it was frustrating.
The romance was sweet and all, but Nelson's giant family freaked me out even more, that Ryder's sad hystory with foster homes.
Ok I liked this one better then then last but it again ends so fast that we don't have any resolution with Ryder and Jenaen. I can almost let that go if the book picks up with his story. Otherwise another of the same. Nothing really changes with this series after Forests book. I do love the fact that we see a lot of Matt and the others from the beginning of the series.
For me this needed to be a longer story to get a higher rating. There is a lot going on in their history and I'd love to have been able to know them better. I'm hoping Jensen's story is next, poor thing.
An emotional short story. I loved that Nelson and Ryder managed to get together and fall in love and I LOVED the ending. But Jensen is really starting to not only worry me but truly piss me off at the way he is being towards Ryder. He had better get his shit together and soon!
I love this series, just can't get enough. Stephani Hecht always seems to know exactly what to do to keep a series interesting and have you begging for the next one.
