Poetic in his writing, David Ruis gives perhaps one of the most tangible definitions of worship I've ever read. While the book is short, it took me a great deal of time to read, because I had to stop so often. Sometimes, a paragraph would just engulf my heart and I'd have to stop to digest how hard it had hit me; sometimes, it was just a sentence, or a word, like "pneuma".
My perception lined up with Ruis's prior to reading this book, but it didn't just reinforce my thoughts. The Worship God is Seeking challenged my ideology and there were several points that caused my jaw to drop. The concept of community being such a key element in worship had only slightly occurred to me, outside of just corporate Sunday worship, but to delve in so deeply into why and how that is the case really was a turning point.
Not caving to the lowest common denominator in our corporate worship and "teaching worship" to our congregation were elements that I took away as perhaps the most applicable. I'll be reading this one again and honestly took enough notes as I went to rewrite the book. There were no wasted words, no filler pages and no limit on how important this book was to my growth and maturity.
