In between (and sometimes during) my thicker and more literary books I have a penchant for sliding in Regency romances and other bits of fluff. Lately those have been a bit hit or miss for me, or maybe I'm just getting spoiled by "good" books and have less patience for fluff (I like that answer because it gives me hope that I'm improving my mind, so I'm going to stick with it). This one was a miss for me, and holds the distinction of prompting me to create a new "what the heck was the author thinking" shelf.

So here's the deal, and why I'm still shaking my head over this book: First you create a syrupy sweet, clean romance set in Regency times. That's only going to appeal to a limited number of readers, but that's fine. Then you decide to have the hero inherit a Welsh mansion that's haunted by a beautiful 400-year-old ghost, and have the hero and this ghost fall in love with each other. This is starting to get a little quirky, but hey, I can still roll with it.

description

Then you have the ghost basically hanging out with the hero and his house guests all the time, chatting about life, the universe and everything, and everyone in the house gets used to this surprisingly quickly. This is where things started to go off the rails for me; there's a limit to how much disbelief I can suspend. Finally you throw in a quite evil bit about some characters basically making a deal with Satan, and that's where I started to think, how many clean romance readers really want this kind of subplot in their romance reading? It just seems like such an odd plot combination to me.

To make things even odder, in the end (total spoilers here)

It just didn't work for me. Too much WTH and "oh, please" going on in this book.

Audience: Adult (clean)
Genre: Regency ... uh, paranormal?
Length: 171 pages

Rating: ********** Raised to the 10th power (Um, does that equal a million? I was never any good at math.)

The Pros: Okay. Where to begin? From the moment I read the blurb for this book, I knew it would be unlike anything Sarah has written. I was intrigued. I was very impatient. I texted my sister several times to find out when she would mail the book to me. Then I started it. I got into it. Let me tell you: Fab-u-lous.
It is unlike anything Sarah has written and it is so masterful, I don't know where to begin. I adore the love story. I adored the mystery. I adored the paranormal twist. I am hoping and praying that Sarah will write more of this. It is like all of my dreams come true -- blends of sigh-worthy regency and fantastical elements! As a hero, I will have to rank Nikolas below Phillip Jonquil (FRIENDS & FOES). Well, come on, we all know I have a lit crush on Phillip (and Sorrel too, really, if we're honest). And also below Harry (COURTING MISS LANCASTER). Gwen is a great heroine and I love Dafydd (don't try to say it in your head ...). But really, what I love, love, love about this book is the concept and the execution. Masterful. Seriously. I never once thought Sarah might be out of her depth. It was all told in a very believable way. It sort of just flowed through me like any of her books would and I never questioned it. As usual, Sarah's knowledge injected in her brilliant way is flawless.

And why would I even bother with writhing The Cons for a book I rated a million stars?

He Said/She Said: Briefly, there is always that moment in Sarah's books where I just sigh and say, "Yes. Yes, Sarah, you've done it again." This was that moment.
"Oh, it has very little to do with talking, I assure you."

And now, you all want your own copy, don't you? I would blame you for going to Amazon to download it right now. (I would, if I were you.)

Disclaimer: Well, so scary things happen, because this is a ghost story ... but it's mild.

This is a weird little ghost book.
Logically, everyone should have ran screaming from the house upon the ghost sighting.
But here strangely it's the poor ghost who's left feeling uncomfortable and harassed while they all react jollily to her presence and treat her as any other guest as she's coerced into joining them for the evening entertainments. 0-O

The H, a poor gentleman receives an unexpected windfall of an estate and income, from the Welsh side of his family - a branch from which his family broke off centuries ago.
He's a Pritchard and not Prichard like the Welsh relative, and certainly not the original 'ap Richard'.

Everyone warns him about the resident lady ghost but he just laughs it off (as he irritatingly tends to do so about everything). He's wishes to marry a certain lady and now having the means to do so, invites her and her family along with the family of a good friend for a fortnight at this newly acquired house. The ghost is not very demanding but expects that her room be left undisturbed and so when the H decides to put his lady love in that pretty room - he gets quite the reality check.

Gwen's been stuck in the house for 400 years since the days of Welsh invasion by King . There's a dark secret about how she died while her people held off the English from this very castle. For a ghost, she's scared of the tower and some mysterious darker presence.

Ms. Eden never disappoints. An Unlikely Match was a charming ghost story that sucks you in right from the start. I was totally looking for a romantic ghost story and this went beyond my expectations. Nickolas has a rather unconventional upbringing, being pushed off on different relatives while he was growing up. He didn’t have a penny to his name until he inherited an old castle and small fortune. He arrives at his new home and is told it is haunted by a 400 year old ghost, Gwen. I liked Nickolas quite a bit, he is funny and optimistic. I like that he sees the good in people and even though he had a lonely childhood, he was still a caring person. He makes the best of situations. I also liked our ghost Gwen. She is used to having things her way and is unprepared for someone like Nickolas. I enjoyed their relationship, I liked that they became friends and thought it was believable when they started falling for each other. I really wasn’t sure how everything was going to work out, what with Gwen being a ghost and all. I liked how everything was handled though and thought the whole thing was well written and enjoyable. I also liked the side characters; they added a lot of fun elements to the story. Overall, a great Halloween read, although you could read it any time and enjoy it just as much. Ms. Eden can’t write fast enough!

Content: Squeaky clean.

I really enjoyed the other Sarah Eden books I've read, but this one disappointed me. I didn't find the characters or their relationship as well developed or as satisfying as in her other books. At one point in the second half when Nickolas was thinking back on his growing attachment for Gwen, Ms. Eden was having him daydream about conversations and encounters that she didn't tell us about. I, for one, could have used quite a bit more of their developing relationship in order to make me care about the characters more. Her other books contain characters that are so richly drawn, and relationships that are so real and enjoyable, that this one was a big disappointment. Also, I seemed to draw the conclusions about the mystery part, way before the characters in the book did, which is also a turn off for me.

I have read many of Sarah Eden's books and this one was different from the rest. It was a great book to read, just not what I expected.

This book is set during the Regency Period in Wales. Nickolas Pritchard has just received and unexpected inheritance. Orphaned as a young boy, he has been passed from one family to another and doesn't have money to call his own.

With his change of fortune, he invites the object of his affection, Miss Castleton. and her family to join him as guests in his new home. He also invites the Davis family who had been generous in opening their home to him during his time of need. The guest he didn't plan on was the resident ghost, Gwen.

This is a sweet romance story with surprising turns. I wondered how she would pull it all together and she did a great job. Of course, it is exactly what I would expect of Sarah Eden. She has never disappointed me in my expectations of her books.

What a great book for October! I just love Sarah Eden...just in case I haven't said that enough. This story was just as delightful as any of her others with a fun ghostly twist!
OK one teeny complaint: who the heck is the girl on the front? I wish they would just let Sarah pick her own darn covers!

The young impoverished Nickolas Pritchard inherits a fortune and an estate. He feels very blessed, even if the estate is in Wales. Before the inheritance, he didn't even know he had Welsh ancestry. Right before leaving the solicitor, the solicitor warns him, "...the house you have inherited, though sound in every other way, is, I fear, quite inarguably haunted."

The skeptic Nickolas Pritchard doesn't believe in ghosts so he is not bothered by this warning. But when he arrives at his new estate, he discovers that the entire household very much believes in one ghost: Gwen. She has protected the estate for almost 400 years and it is best not to incur her wrath.

Nickolas decides to host a house party and invites two families: the Castletons and the Davises. Nickolas has been in love with Miss Castleton from afar, and she has always been kind to him... but he was always too poor to win her parents' approval and to court her. Mrs. Davis is like the mother that Nickolas never had, as his own parents died when he was a young boy. And her son, Griffith, is Nickolas' best friend.

Nickolas also becomes good friends with the young vicar, Dafydd. Dafydd is also acquainted with the ghost, Gwen, and can't believe that Nickolas is so skeptical about her existence. So they enter a friendly wager: by the time Nickolas' houseguests leave, if no ghost shows up then Dafydd will spend a night alone in The Tower. If Gwen appears, then Nickolas will spend the night alone in The Tower.

What happened to Gwen almost 400 years ago in The Tower is too horrible for her to talk about. In almost 400 years she has never shared her secret of The Tower... and no one has ever been tempted to ask. She has ruled Ty Mynydd (Nickolas' inherited estate) through its various owners. All previous owners have either been warriors (and she definitely knew how to deal with them) or so afraid of her that they stepped out of her way and let her run things. Everyone in the household is afraid of incurring her wrath.

What Gwen has never dealt with -- in her almost 400 years of being a ghost -- is someone like Nickolas. He neither battles her nor hides from her. Instead he engages her in banter and charms her. He does what no one has ever done before -- he treats her with kindness. And he becomes her staunch ally with Mr. Castleton who is obsessed with a ghost in the house and follows her everywhere.

Even though Gwen is terrified of The Tower, she accompanies him on his night alone in The Tower when he loses the wager. She doesn't think anyone should ever be alone in that awful place, and she pleads with him to leave as soon as the wager is fulfilled.

The second half of the book deals with the deepening of Nickolas' and Gwen's friendship and unraveling the evil mystery of The Tower...

Due to a reading funk that I have been in lately I had a hard time getting into An Unlikely Match. I was pretty upset with this little funk because I have been wanting to read this book for awhile now. I decided that I just needed to push forward and keep reading. And I was very glad that I did! I really enjoyed An Unlikely Match.

I loved watching Nickolas and Gwen's relationship evolve... from Gwen declaring war on him and his household (this was hilarious!)... to their friendship... to watching them fall in love and my heart breaking for them because the relationship is impossible between the living and the dead. It was very believable. And, knowing it had to be a HEA, I knew something just had to happen to make their relationship possible.

I also liked the bit of mystery involving what happened to Gwen and was wondering how everything was going to fall in place at the end. It was very well written and I definitely adored the ending. This is going to become a must read every Halloween. :o)

This book had an interesting concept, but was written in such a juvenile way that I would laugh out loud at the repeated cheesiness.

Being my first Sarah M. Eden novel, I wasn't sure what to expect. I doubt this is what all of her books are like, so I still plan to read another at some point. If you are looking for a book that will fill your Jane Austen hole (as I was) this is NOT that book.

You know that common tip for writing, "show, don't tell"? Well, Ms. Eden didn't seem to get that memo for this novel. EVERYTHING was spoon-fed to you in the most obvious way. On top of which, characters were either completely oblivious, or they changed their personality part way through to fit the book, or both.

Like I said, interesting concept, and I will definitely be giving Ms. Eden another chance. This did leave a sour taste in my mouth, however.

Nikolas is more than pleased when a surprise inheritance renders him no longer a penniless gentleman, but the owner of an estate in Whales. He hardly blinks at the news that it is certainly haunted. Nor does her wince at the warnings that the resident ghost, apparently a “young” woman named Gwen, is rather put out with him for inviting a guest to invade her rooms. But once Gwen presents herself and gives him a severe tongue lashing right in front of his guests, that’s when Nikolas finds himself reeling.

Because honestly, he’s starting to find Gwen’s company far more interesting than that of the young woman whose hand in marriage he had intended to win.

An Unlikely Match is a cute supernatural romance that ends just the way I’ve always wanted a supernatural romance to end. Lovely to have that literary-fantasy fulfilled.

I'm not sure what I expected. This was the only book I had not read of Eden's and so I decided to give it a try. It's not like any of her other books at all! I admit I've purposely not read it up till now because of the "ghost" theme... like I said, not sure what I expected. It starts out rather like an innocent make believe story with a friendly ghost.. but it definitely shifts to an evil agenda half way in. I guess, being Christian, there really wasn't any other way for Eden to explain away paranormal... I also disliked that one of the evil perpetrators was a priest...I guess though, looking at the time frame, there were no other religions at that time, so I guess I'll forgive her that. I read it in one day... so I guess it kept my interest. Not sure I'll be seeking out other paranormal books anytime soon, but I did rather enjoy this one. 3.5 rounded up.

Wasn't sure I was going to like this book because the romance seems doomed from the start. He's alive, and she's the ghost haunting his new home. Could only think of 2 endings to that.

I had to force myself to not skip to the end to see if it had a happy ending. So glad I didn't or it would have ruined the story for me. Don't do it!!!

Turned out to be a very sweet romance and I LOVED IT! Sarah M. Eden is still my favorite author. I will continue to buy everything she writes because I have never been disappointed.

It is a bit dark and intense in places, so probably for older readers who can handle that.

This is a prefect example of a sweet happily ever after romance. This was the book club pick for the Goodreads book club I'm part of (Thanks so much for starting it ladies!) and I'm glad it was picked. I probably wouldn't have read it quite so early otherwise. This book has a ghost, a handsome charming hero, a (former) Welsh castle and a mysterious past evil event. I really enjoyed the resolution of the problems (very exciting and slightly spooky. Perfect for October and Halloween). I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a sweet ghost story/romance.

I would give it a 3.5. While I enjoyed the first 2 books I have read by this author, namely Seeking Persephone and Courting Miss Lancaster, I had a hard time getting into this one. The fact that the heroine was a ghost kept distracting me from enjoying the secondary characters and the setting. Nikolas was a fine hero, I just think his feelings for her were unrealistic. A stellar conclusion though.

This was such an interesting book. I was intrigued, but disturbed. I had a love-hate relationship with Nickolas and Gwen and was continually confused by their situation. I loved their relationship, but was quite confused how they would end up together. It had a very happy ending and I loved the epilogue, but the book was a bit odd the whole time.

Nickolas Pritchard has just found out that a distant relative passed away, leaving him as the heir of his estate in Wales. The formerly penniless Nickolas is thrilled to have a fortune at his disposal, as it will allow him to court Miss Castleton. He invites her and her family, along with some other friends, to visit his new estate, against the advice of his housekeeper and the neighborhood vicar, who warn him that the ghost who haunts his estate, Gwen, doesn't like unauthorized visitors. Nickolas, not believing that the ghostly Gwen even exists, moves ahead with his plans...only to find, when Gwen begins causing disturbances and makes appearances, that she does indeed exist. And not only does she exist, but she's beautiful and kind and funny, and his growing feelings for her are undeniable, but it's also impossible that they can ever amount to anything.

I was a little skeptical of a ghost story-romance, but I was quickly pulled into the the banter between Nickolas and Gwen and to the mystery of Gwen's death. The ending came a little too quickly for me; I thought the way things were resolved was interesting but then the epilogue at the end wrapping everything up wasn't entirely satisfactory. I guess I just wanted a little more AFTER the ghost problem was solved, so I would have liked more than a chapter or two there. Overall, it's my least favorite of Sarah Eden's books, but it's still a fun Regency romance.

So, I pretty much love all of Eden’s books- some are a little more heart wrenching than others and I don’t like the heavy feeling of them, but the writing is still amazing in each one ....
I’m not a fan of the living and dead romances as I haven’t read many that are believable or not cringe worthy- so it took me a while to actually get the nerve up to read this one- as I’ve read every other book by Eden I figured I should just get into it- I’m sorry to have waited so long. I think this is one of my favorites of hers and I wish I would have read it sooner. So good. Loved the characters- loved how it all came together- that’s usually the weird part for me in other paranormal stories out there- but this was super cool.
This book will be going on my shelf :)
Super clean, good suspense, great characters, strong H and h and witty.
