Joleene Naylor is the author of the glitter-less Amaranthine vampire series, a world where vampires aren't for children. As a compliment to the novel series, she has also written several short stories, including the Vampire Morsels collection.
In her spare time, Joleene is a freelance book cover designer and for-fun photographer . She maintains several blogs full of odd ramblings, and occasionally updates her website at JoleeneNaylor.com. In what little time is left she watches anime and pins recipes and DIY, all from a crooked Victorian house in Villisca, Iowa. Between her husband and her pets, she is never lonely, and should she ever disappear one might look for her on a beach in Tahiti, sipping a tropical drink and wearing a disguise.
She currently has several books available for purchase on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Apple and Smashwords.
Vampire Morsels is a collection of short stories based on the Amaranthine series. When I began reading, I honestly didn't think I'd finish the book. I figured I'd need to read at least the first novel in the series before I could relate to the various characters in the short story collection. Needless to say, I was wrong. From the very first page, I was immediately drawn in to Joleene Naylor's world. The characters were engaging, and each story tied into another in some way. We meet vengeful killers, philosophical vamps, young brides yearning for love, children, mothers, and innocent victims who can scarcely remember how they became vampires.
And the writing? Holy cow. This author can write. I'm a fan of Stephen King and Anne Rice. It takes a lot for a horror author to impress me. The reason I'm comparing this author with King and Rice is because she is every bit as good a writer as these two masters of the genre. Naylor's vampires aren't the lovestruck sparkly vamps that haunt high school hallways--these are complex characters with multifaceted personalities. Some are cruel and vicious, others are only doing what they need to do to survive.
I would highly recommend this book to vampire and horror lovers. I'm definitely sold on the Amaranthine world and can't wait to take a bite out of Shades of Gray (Book one in the series).
Vampire Morsels is a collection of short stories about some of the minor vampires readers meet in Joleene Naylor's Amaranthine Series. It's the perfect companion to these books because it tells when and where the vampire was turned and has a description of their personality or a short story about their life. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and found the stories quite interesting. I also loved Joleene's illustrations for each character. She has her own unique style of drawing.
This was a great read and an easy read. I loved it.
Product Details http://www.amazon.com/Vampire-Morsels...... Hello everyone and welcome to this week's edition of What I Am Reading. Today I am reviewing Vampire Morsels by Joleene Naylor. To those of you that follow my book review blog, you will notice that the author's name sounds a little familiar. This is actually the second book that I am reviewing by Joleene. A couple of weeks ago, I had reposted my review of Shades of Gray, which is book one in Ms. Naylor's Amaranthine Series. http://www.amazon.com/Shades-Gray-Jol...... If you are not familiar with Joleene's work and find the prospect of starting a 6 (going on 7) book series a little daunting, then I highly recommend reading Vampire Morsels first. This collection of short stories gives the reader an excellent glimpse into the world that Joleene has so intricately woven. These 'back stories', if you will, center around some of the lesser characters that you will find in the first two books of the series: Shades of Gray and Legacy of Ghosts. http://www.amazon.com/Legacy-Ghosts-J...... Each Vampire Morsel centers around one character. I'm sure as you are reading, you, like myself, will pick a few that are your favorites. All of the short stories are well written and Joleene certainly put a lot of thought into the span of history covered in this book. However, you will find that some of these vampires will have something in their character that you can more strongly relate to than others. So, pick a couple of Morsels for yourself and be sure to let Joleene know who you like best :-) In addition to Vampire Morsels, I am also using this week's edition of What I Am Reading to throw a quick blurb about 101 Tips For Traveling With a Vampie. http://www.amazon.com/Tips-Traveling-...... Oh! Some exciting news! As I was copying this last link to 101 Tips, I noticed that Ms. Naylor is currently giving this book away for free! So, be sure to follow the link and get your copy today! Until next time, 4-LAN
This is a review of “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection” by Joleene Naylor
This novel is a collection of seventeen stories regarding vampires in the world of Amaranthine. “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection” relates to her other books, “Shades of Gray,” “Legacy of Ghosts,” “Ties of Blood,” and “Ashes of Deceit.”
Each short story is about a character from her other books. Sometimes showing insight into how these vampires were formed and inner most thoughts.
The book was well-planned and very easy to read.
This is an Adult read.
Ms. Naylor gives you the exact book the character is from and what year and country each story is taking place in.
My Thoughts
Each character’s story was sometimes emotional and shocking. The villains were hard to pick out but that is because some of the stories were about such flawed characters. Something I loved and was shocked about.
I cannot go into depth about each character’s story in “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection” but I will have to say you will be wetting your lips to read the other books. These snippets have made me hunger to read the other books because they were so captivating.
One particular story about Claudius, I wanted to read before his story and after his story in the worst way.
I was drawn in, in the first few pages of “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection”. Ms. Naylor delivers action-packed, fast-paced tales of vampirism. Some of the stories crisscross each other which I thought was so great.
I usually don’t like short story collections per se, but I have to recommend this collection highly.
For this and so much more, I have to give “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection” by Joleene Naylor a enthusiastic five star review.
Well thought out, and (un)surprisingly three dimensional, Joleene Naylor has hit the nail on the head again with this collection of short stories. Providing her readers with a deeper look into the world of the Amaranthine Series, each lesser character is described in great detail and given their own personality and allowing for another layer of depth to the fleshed out world that our dear author has taken such care to build. The best part about the collection is that you don't necessarily have to have read the main 6 novels in the series.
I was gifted this book by Her Awesomeness and I have been rapidly turning the digital pages of each short from the moment it hit my Kindle. Another FANTASTIC job!! <3
