Kiora is rapidly learning that evil and lies come in shades of black and white and swirling greys, but nothing could have prepared her for the shock of leaving Meros.
Kiora and her protector Emane step through the pass into a world they never knew existed but were always meant to save, only to find it far worse than they could have ever imagined. Good has been forced into hiding for its own survival, while the rest of the land bows to the Shadow, a force that pushes any remaining thoughts of Dralazar from Kiora’s mind. This land is full of new creatures, each more dangerous than the last. Her visions have taken on a deadly twist, and magic, or what comes of it, was never so real. And then there is Alcander: a Tavean, their guide, and an entirely different kind of trouble.

How is it possible?! I seriously loved Wings of Arian the first book in the Solus series, but book two Wings of Tavea... I dare say I enjoyed even more so than Wings of Arian! I am always very wary of picking up sequels to books I loved, but thank goodness Wings of Tavea surpassed my expectations and completely took me by surprise!

If you have not yet read Wings of Arian....WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! This is a series that is not to be missed by any fantasy/adventure lover! Devri has yet again proved herself to be an amazing writer in Wings of Tavea. and while I am a bit sad the third and final book is coming out I am at the same time excited because I can't wait to see what Devri comes out with outside of the Solus Trilogy. I will be for sure picking it up no matter what it is she comes out with next!

Going to briefly go over what I didn't like in Wings of Tavea and that was sadly Emane and Kiora, I enjoyed them so much more in Wings of Arian. In Wings of Tavea though I felt they were a bit more whiny than usual. I understand they have the world on their shoulders and everything, so I am sure that causes them to stress or have nervous break downs like Kiora did about 10 times in Wings of Tavea, but it still did get on my nerves. I still love them, oh yes I do, but they did frustrate me.

Moving on to what I LOVED and that was easily hands down Drustan and Alcander. First off Drustan is just my favorite character now, I love his personality, and I love that he is a shifter. I mean...come on I can not get over still how awesome that would be to be able to transform into a freakin DRAGON whenever you wanted, or whatever you feel like transforming into. Drustan is the friend that keeps everything together I feel, and without him Emane and Kiora would surely have died along time ago!

Now onto our newly added beautiful character Alcander! I feel bad saying this...really I do especially since in my Wings of Arian review I talked about how much I loved Emane and Kiora...well now I am SO in love with the idea of Alcander and Kiora...when it comes down to it I find Alcander was much more interesting than Emane AND I do believe he is the better match for Kiora! I guess we shall see how this all plays out though. (fingers crossed for Alcander!!!!)

Overall this was an amazing sequel to what is so far an amazing series. What I really love about the Solus trilogy is while the romance does play a big part in the story, I always feel at the end of the book the main focus was on good conquering evil, and THAT is what is important. Wings of Tavea is an adventure fantasy that I believe will leave it's readers on the edge of their seat and then dying for book three once they finally reach the end!

Book One is all about a world that has been devoid of evil and so it was a little too sweet for me at times. Book Two is all about a world that has been devoid of good and so I love ever moment in this land. There was much character growth from both good side and evil. I’m also quite attached to two of the characters introduced in this book: Alexander and Lomay. The plot in this book is slightly more unpredictable than the first, but the visuals are no less breathtaking. I truly love the descriptions in this series. The only two authors that I’ve read recently to rival Devri Walls’s gift are Laini Taylor and Maggie Stiefvater.

My dear villain,Dralazar, has returned. When he discovers the only way his curse can be cursed – I almost died laughing. He knows that he’s pretty much shit out of luck, and yet he decides to press on. This crafty villain is certain that he’ll figure out some way to gain compliance from this individual. I really like that despite being pure evil, he isn’t blinded by it. He’s a big picture type of villain and I can’t help but crush on him a little.

As much as Emane is good for Kiora, I was absolutely giddy with excitement when the third wheel of the love triangle was introduced in this book. Alcander is a fun character who speak more though facial expressions than with words. He doesn’t say much and he’s a grump, but I could tell from the very beginning that there’s a tender soul underneath. I really, really like how Alcander gets under everyone’s skin and isn’t the nicest person. He’s a damaged soul and I can’t help but want Kiora to switch her love to him over Emane. Here’s an fine example of what people think of Alcander (Drustan is a shapeshifter):

Gratitude and relief rushed through her. Craning her neck, [Kiora] asked, “Why are you so tall?”

Drustan usually kept to the same form. Today, he looked a good foot and a half taller.

“I got tired of looking up to Alcander, so I adjusted.”

She grinned. “How did he like that?”

“He didn’t.” Drustan smirked. “But he was too proud to say anything about it.”

Lomay (who I kept calling Loopy in my head) is an interesting character who I often did the “wrong” things for the “right” reasons. He had the best intentions at heart, I’m sure, but his lack of trust made his motives questionable. He kept both the reader and the other characters in the dark about everything he would do until it was done. Never asking for help or relinquishing control in the decision-making.

My only complaint for this book is that the author used a dated method of good verses evil with white vs black with the Tavean race. The bad Taveans have black hair and the good Taveans have white hair. High fantasy novels have a long history of making all the bad guys have “dark” features, while the good guys have “light” features, but it’s a shame that the author uses this stereotype in an otherwise original fantasy world. Since this is a very minor detail, I still think that this book deserves full marks. (A+)

(I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.)

I dove immediately into Wings of Tavea right after I finished Wings of Arian. This installment, in my opinion, was a whole lot stronger than Wings of Arian and proves my prediction that it's a series that will really progress.

I don't know if it's because I went into the book expecting to dislike Kiora, but I found myself tolerating her presence a lot more in this installment for some reason. She had her whiny and annoying moments but for the most part, I liked her much much better. Her growth was something I had been waiting for from the first book, so I was incredibly pleased to see her become a lot more mature. Her acceptance of her destiny made her appear headstrong and I loved that about her. Some new characters were introduced into the book along with a love triangle, which of course should have left me mad, but surprisingly that was not the case. It's most probably because I wasn't a huge fan of Emane from the first book.

The most interesting part about Wings of Tavea was once again the world-building and the plot. The author really does a great job at making her world absolutely alive and captivating. Plus, it was a lot more action-packed and intense than the first book. Devri Walls is a great writer and her writing has a way of enchanting you, forcing you to read her book.

All in all, I found myself really enjoying Wings of Tavea and I can't wait to see where things are headed in the next book! Definitely a series that's not to be missed!

This series is continuing to surprise me. The world the writer created is breathtaking and interesting. Every creature is amazing, especially dragons and Shifters. I love absolutely everything in this series, but the only thing that annoys me a little is Kiora. She is whining almost all the time. Ename is a funny character, brave and loving and I consider him and Alcander the best part of this book, besides the creatures. The storyline is inventive and it keeps you on the edge. I hope that this love triangle resolves itself in the next 2 books because I really hate those things. But, I wouldnt want to be in Kioras shoes because both guys are incredible in their own way, though I am still Team Ename. I really look forward to the rest of this series, there are a lot more things to learn.

Wow! I enjoyed the first book in this series but this second book just took it to a whole new level. It must be the addition of Alcandar who is the type of character that both infuriates you and tugs at your heart strings. I haven't felt this conflicted over a love triangle since the Twilight series! Emane is such a strong person in his own right but his devotion to Kiora, even as he is tortured, made me view him in a new light. Speaking of Kiora she grows by leaps and bounds in some areas and yet in others she still struggles through book two. She seems to be trying her best to handle new and unsettling feelings but inexperience and duty as the Solus aren't making it easy. I picked up book 3 immediately!

Picking up right where Wings of Arian left off we follow Kiora and Emane as they venture beyond the gates into a world they never knew existed, a world they were meant to save. And a world where good is hard to find. The Shadow haunts these lands forcing its residents to bow before it or die. Kiora and Emane quickly realize that this world is much more dangerous than they ever realized. As they try to determine what is safe in this strange new land they stumble upon a fierce warrior who offers his help. Forcing to trust their instincts and eager to find safe passage they accept the strangers offer of help, but can they trust this tall stranger? In an adventure like no other follow Emane and Kiora as they try to make sense of the world beyond the gates and try to save it and themselves from things yet seen.

I have to say that I absolutely loved this story! Devri Walls quickly swept me up with her great world building, vivid descriptions and wonderful magic. I fell even more in love with her world and her great characters. Of course in this book I had a lot of love hate going on with Kiora. Too many times I found myself shaking my head at her and hating her. At one point I wanted to reach in the book and squish her like a bug. Or as Drustan would say, "....eat her, using something with really large teeth" (kindle, loc. 3558). But despite my hate for her, I still love her and I admire her growth and her ability to love all. It was really great to see what Kiora was made of as I watched her grow from the young and innocent girl from the first book, to the strong, independent solus in Wings of Tavea.

Now I will admit despite my love of Emane there were times I wanted to choke him too, but not nearly as much as I wanted to choke Kiora. Once you read the book you will totally understand my torn feelings for Kiora. Emane despite being this incredibly strong, loyal and all around fierce protector--is a bit naive, pig-headed and jealous at times. And unfortunately this can get him into trouble. There were so many times in Wings of Tavea that I couldn't help but feel for Emane. In the first book I felt like he was rather inadequate as a protector, often frustrated that Kiora was more powerful than he was. But I found that despite what Emane lacks in power he more than makes up for in his will, strength, and ability to never back down from a fight. I deeply admire the way he fights for all innocents, even if he doesn't particularly care for them.

In Wings of Tavea Devri Walls not only brings back one of my other favorite characters from Wings of Arian, Drustan, but also introduces us to other amazing characters, like Alcander. This Tavean who is not only a powerful and fierce warrior, but just so happens to be a lot of trouble, again read and you will see why. I love him and I truly loved the back story that Devri Walls built him. Because underneath that warrior facade is a man who is hurting, caring and struggling with truths that he might have given up on long ago. Where Emane openly shows his feelings, Alcander buries them. I enjoyed getting to know this character and can't wait to get to know him more, but I will be watching him like a hawk.

Besides the incredible characters, Devri Walls builds yet another world that I can see vividly in my mind. A world that gives us creatures we know and creatures we don't. All with a unique spin that is entirely Devri Walls. Not only is the Wings of Tavea a tale of magic, adventure, and love; it is also a journey of finding one's inner truths. Each character in Wings of Tavea goes through trials. Some that make them stronger and others whose consequences remain to be seen. But with every trial these characters face, you feel like you are too. I know I did.

In Wings of Tavea you will laugh, you will yell, you will cheer and you will cry--there was this moment where I cursed Devri Walls for breaking my heart as silent tears fell down my face, but most of all you will be taken on a magical journey through unknown worlds with characters you will want to get to know. So if you haven't already started this fabulous series, then you should do it now!

Originally posted on the blog: What the Cat Read

As I’ve already mentioned, I have found a serious love for Devri Walls and her writing. After having finished the first book of this series, I knew without a moment of a doubt that I wanted to read the second book in order to find out what happens next to Kiora and Eamon. Normally when I pick up the next book of the series, I find that they tend to be not as thrilling as the first was, but that was so not the case with this one. If anything this was equally as wonderful, murr! =^.^=

I must say first off that if you haven’t read the first book of this series, please stop reading this review and go read Wings of Arian immediately. I’m not saying this for the sake of spoilers, but simply because you really can’t read this book until you know what is happening in the first one. There’s no way around it. I’m also saying this because the events in this book take place almost immediately after everything in book one.

One things I was pleased to see was that the characters continued to grow and develop. Kiora’s much stronger and more confident this time around, though she still has moments of weakness and emotional breakdowns. Emane also still has his sarcastic side and is quick to temper, but he’s also become much more attuned to his role as Protector. Okay, to be honest, he still gets under my fur sometimes, especially when he knows that he shouldn’t do something, but he does it anyways. That aside, I still like him. Dralazar lost a bit of his appeal for me, mostly because of his seducing of Kiora’s sister (minor spoiler). I completely understand why he did it, and I’ll readily admit that his plan was a good one, but I feel as though he could have gotten what he wanted without fully messing with Layla’s heart. Drustan, who was introduced in first book, is a fun character. He’s got a lot of energy, and thanks to the way that Walls wrote him, that energy carries over to the reader instantly. I found myself constantly smiling with him. It really didn’t take long for him to become a favorite of mine. As for Alcander, I don’t know whether I like him or hate him. From the moment he was introduce I was suspicious of him and he really rubbed my fur the wrong way. He’s rather pompous and extremely arrogant, and I hated how he treated Drustan and Emane (especially Emane). But despite that, he is also rather appealing, and I can understand why Kiora gravitates towards him. Still doesn’t me that I don’t want to smack him at times.

Just like with the first book, the descriptions of the characters, the setting, and the creatures who inhabit this world were all vividly described. I really do enjoy a story that paints a picture in your head as you read, even more so when that picture becomes a full length movie.

Also just like with the first book, I didn’t want to put this one down once I started reading. I could have easily read it in one sitting if it wasn’t for the fact that I did need to do a few other things besides read. The story is fast paced, extremely engaging, and guaranteed to keep you wanting to find out what happens next. I really loved the fact that the story wasn’t overly predictable. Yes, there were a few things that I figured out pretty quick, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying the book.

The only thing I wasn’t entirely thrilled with was the love triangle. I’m really getting tired of seeing this in most of the YA’s that I read. I understand that it creates drama and all, but seriously, there are other ways to achieve this without having a three-way love interest.

That aside, I’m definitely anxious to get my paws on the third book of the series in order to find out what happens next! And if what I recently saw was correct, third book may not actually be the end of Kiora’s adventures. If this is really the case, then that makes me even more anxious to find out what happens. Devri Walls, you have now have a feline fan amongst all your many readers. Purrs and tail waves to you for a job well done! =^.^=

This review is also posted HERE.

When reading fantasy-themed sequels, I usually have a rather difficult time reimmersing myself to the different worlds. Upon reading the first few pages, I often find myself bombarded with heaps of information that I have already learned some months ago but have forgotten and as a result, reading fantasy sequels becomes a chore and not really a task that I enjoy doing. Info-dumping simply isn't enjoyable, no matter which way you look at it. Honestly, I cannot even begin to count the number of fantasy series that I have ended up giving up on, and I truly felt worried that The Solus Trilogy would be another of those series. Thank God I couldn't be more wrong!

Devri Walls is one heck of a gifted writer. Wings of Tavea picks up where Wings of Arian left off, and I'm happy to note that already-learned information wasn't thrown around haphazardly in the initial chapters. Though this might be the case, I found it rather astounding that Walls somehow still managed to refresh my memory of all the things I have forgotten about her world through subtly thought-prodding passages spread throughout many pages here and there. I loved that she managed to completely reimmerse me in her world through select words, and that overloading of information was completely unnecessary.I don't know about you guys, but this for me is what makes a writer phenomenal, and Walls is truly that. Her writing flowed smoothly; the plot is fast-paced, and I found that I couldn't stop myself from reading more about this magical world.

I'd also like to once again commend Walls on how she portrayed all her characters, but most especially Kiora. She somehow managed to toe the line between Kiora being overly emotional and overly strong, and in the process created a character that is both unique and relateable. I also love how Walls ceaselessly stresses that the fact that Kiora feels pain is what contributes to her immense power, yet she also gives this character enough time to accept that it simply isn't possible for her not kill while on her mission. Moreover, character growth is aplenty for all the main characters - Kiora, Emante, Drustan, and the newly-introduced Alcander go through their fair share of self-realizations. We also get to know more about Drustan's past, and just what made him turn against Dralazar.

The hints of a love triangle between Kiora, Emante, and Alcander is introduced to readers as well. Nothing about this triangle felt forced - it was rather well-written in the sense that we get to see how Kiora is with both men, and it really cannot be denied that she has unparalleled connections with both. I have no idea how Walls will resolve this part of the story, but I truly cannot wait to find of what else is in store for these three in the final book of the series. I'd also like to stress out that while the romantic subplots are integral parts of the general story, Walls made sure that not too much of the novel was devoted to them. Too much romance can be overkill, after all!

All in all, the Solus Series can be enjoyed by both adults and non-adults; and by avid and non-avid readers of the fantasy genre. I truly did not expect that I would fall in love with this world and these characters, but I did, and I'm eagerly anticipating the release of the final book!

This was such an incredible improvement over its predecessor. I cannot emphasis enough how much better the second book is. So many of the issues I had with Wings of Arian were amended in Wings of Tavea. Firstly, it took me days (with LOTS of breaks) to finish the first book. But this book I finished in just two sittings. Much better paced.

Where there was no back story or history in Wings of Arian, the history really begins to blossom in this installment. We learn about an entirely different area of the world with new creatures, new problems, and a new force of evil. I can understand better (even though I suspected as much as I read the first book) why the first installment was so lacking in history. That was sort of the point; Meros (the land in which the main character/Solus, Kiora, lives) is closed off from the rest of the world and raised with an ignorance of the outside world and magic.

So, the lack of back story does make sense in some aspects. I still feel like there could have been a better way to write the plot rather than just completely neglecting to create a back story or history for the entire first book of the series, especially since character development and growth was minimal. Either way, that was all remedied in Wings of Tavea.

Kiora is not nearly as unlikable, although she is still no favorite of mine. We are introduced to some new characters, mainly Alcander and Lomay, and older characters continue their roles, like Drustan the shapeshifter and Emane the Prince of Meros.

I had been waiting for Alcander to make an appearance. I knew he was going to be introduced in Wings of Tavea as a new romantic interest. So I was excited to see what type of character he would be, especially since I'm mostly indifferent towards Prince Emane. Alcander turned out to be a pretty decent character. He has depth, hidden by his cold and serious exterior. I could sense the slowly growing romance between Alcander and Kiora. I think it was because I expected it to happen that I picked up on the romantic vibes. The romance had a pretty subtle growth.

...Until Alcander kisses Kiora and things EXPLODE. Out of NOWHERE. I was so, SO disappointed in this turn of events. He suddenly loves her?! Does some whacky Tavean bonding ritual?! This is all fine, as I really enjoy Alcander and want her to be with him in the end, but it was going SO WELL. It had a lovely pace, just enough to entice interest from the reader, to take a look at Alcander as a possibilty for Kiora. And then it was RUINED, in like two paragraphs, by instalove. SO AMAZINGLY DISAPPOINTING.

Another sour point in this book was Dralazar's plot. A new and greater evil, The Shadow, is introduced and it almost felt like Dralazar was an afterthought, a loose end that quickly needed tying. I had thought he was going to be the main force behind evil in this series, but it turns out he is not. It seemed like he was almost written off in order to focus more on The Shadow. I mean, it's alright that he's no longer the focus... but I feel like his plot could have been more fully completed than it was.

So, other than the instalove and Dralazar's unsatisfying role in the book, Wings of Tavea has pulled me into the series in ways its predecessor could not. I recommend sticking with this series at least through this book before making a decision whether or not to continue.

Not being a big reader of high fantasy Devri Walls has a way of making me love it. With fantastic world building, character growth, a solid plot she takes me into the world she has created and commands my attention. After reading Wings of Arian and loving it, I was eager to dive into this one and it was just as amazing as I thought it would be. It was packed full of action, suspense, and a twist that makes me have a pouty face, but I am sure that it appeals to a lot of people. This book takes us to new places and gives us new obstacles to face. This was a fantastic sequel that in no way suffers from middle book syndrome.

Kiora is a character that I love, but annoys me to no end most of the time. I understand that she is a caring, feeling, sensitive person, but her melt downs and hesitations in deadly situations started to get to me. She is the friggin Solus, she needs to man woman up and take charge. She needs to be able to fight, to kill, to do what must be done. There is too much goodness in her, which isn't a bad thing, but it takes her too long to realize that they are fighting evil and if she has to off the enemy, then that's what needs to happen. She puts people at risk and wallows in self pity too often. On that note, she has tremendous growth through the book. Not just with her personality, but with her magical abilities too. It takes some harsh situations for her to finally break down that wall of emotion that holds her back, but she comes out a strong woman rather than a lost girl in the end.

Emane has never been a favorite of mine, but I do really like him, and I feel like I am invested in him and his well being, as well as his relationship with Kiora. It took me a while to warm up to him in the first book, but he has proven his loyalty and his feelings. Now out of Meros, he has his own issues to deal with. He is the weakest link and he is supposed to be the protector. No matter what though, he will not let the fact he has very little to no magic stand in his way. He is a fighter and he loves Kiora and will not let any harm come to her. When trouble comes his way he fights and does everything in his power to protect her. He is willing to lay down his own life if it means saving hers.

We also have a new cast of characters. We have Alcander who leads them to where Lomay's hideout is. Lomay is who they set out to find so this works in their favor. Alcander is one moody guy. He shows his softer side to Kiora on occasion, but I never really warmed up to him and I can say that I still don't like him. Then there's Lomay who is very old, and very odd. I thought he would be a bigger part in this honestly, but we get very few appearances from him. We also still have Drustan who I adore. He gives the comic relief that is needed in a lot of the tense situations.

Now facing more danger and unknown things, this installment of the Solus trilogy really steps it up. We have more fighting, more tension, and and even more dangerous enemy than Dralazar. It's hard to fight evil when you also must hide from it. With almost no good left they are easy to track down and there is most definitely a search out for them. I love great action and adventure and this book gave me that and more!! I will be eagerly awaiting the third and final book Wings of Nestor!!

I enjoyed Wings of Tavea more than the previous book. I had been worried about the Middle of a Trilogy Syndrome, but it only moderately had some of the symptoms. The main one that I can think of is that this book served as more of a set up for the last book rather than moving the plot significantly forward. Luckily, it wasn’t boring though!

We’re through the gate and out of Meros, into a land that is based entirely in magic. Here there are many more types of magical creatures, most of which are more dangerous than the last. There’s giant birds who feed on magic, so of course Kiora would make a delicious meal. Probably worse than those are the Illusionists. If you believe in the illusion they’re casting, the more solid and real it becomes, so if you think you’re really face-to-face with a dragon, you’re toast! Also over there, Shifters are slaves, which does not make dear Drustan happy, especially when he has to pose as one for his own safety. Needless to say, Kiora and Company have a lot more dangers to face than just Dralazar.

Speaking of Dralazer, he’s still just evil, with no real motivation other than power and being evil. He does some pretty despicable stuff this time around. He has Kiora’s sister on this side, and I just can’t believe how blind with hatred she is! I couldn’t feel sorry for her at all, despite how Dralazer treats her. In addition to him, we’re also introduced to the Shadow, which essentially ruins everything it touches and not it wants Kiora! This book truly takes the good versus evil battle one step forward.

One thing I was looking forward to more of was the romance. I can’t help it, I just love romance! In some ways there’s more of it, but also less of it in this book. Less because Kiora and Emane are separated for much of the book (I won’t spoil why), but more because there’s the introduction of a love triangle. I love love triangles when they’re done right, and not just thrown in for the sake of a love triangle. This one, I’m not too sure about. There’s no “OMG I love you, but I love him too!” from Kiora, it all kind of sneaks up on her. There’s also a new element of magic that gets introduced along with this budding relationship, which is quite interesting. I am curious to see where that goes, even though I don’t think the new guy stands a chance!

As for Kiora, I was hoping to see some growth in her. She was very boring and kind of annoying in the first book, and she still mostly is, but now she’s starting to realize that she needs to make tough choices. She makes her first kill rather early on in the book. Not that killing is good, but Kiora finally sees that taking one life to save thousands is probably the better road to take. It of course devastates her to do this, but she knows she’s the world’s last hope in the battle against evil.

So while I still had some problems with this book, I did enjoy it more than the first. It moved along at a nice pace, and the world building was also better this time. We learn about this new magical land full of awful creatures, and there’s some history lessons about the Creators which I found very interesting. Even though I predict a happy ending, I do wonder how Kiora and Company will get there, so bring on the final book!

For thousands of years, the mountains surrounding Meros has been a barrier and a mystery to the inhabitants of the valley. But, no one ever thought to explore what was on the other side. Their thoughts just got distracted from the mountains to more important things, like, the weather. But all of that has changed. The magical gate separating the valley from a world none of them knew existed as been opened by Dralazar, the same person who erected the gate in the first place. Dralazar, the great evil. Dralazar, the harbinger of war. Dralazar, the seducer of Layla, sister of the Solus. Dralazar, the brother of Eleana, ally of the Solus.

Kiora and Emane are sent over the border, across the mountains, and out into a world they never knew existed. Accompanied by the shapeshifter Drustan, the pair starts on their journey to find Lomay, an Ancient One who may have some of the answers they so desperately need. Even though they held Dralazar back in the last battle, the evil one is on an even bigger mission, to capture Emane, get his magic back, and THEN kill the Solus. Pursued by both Dralazar and the Shadow, a new – or rather ancient – evil, the trio races across this new realm looking for the emissary of Lomay. Instead they find Alcandar, a prince whose kingdom is overrun by darkness. Alcandar delivers the Solus and her Protector to Lomay, and they make a shocking discovery about Kiora and her destiny.

Dralazar has been busy, both in his pursuit of Emane who is the only one who can return the magic stolen by Eleana’s spell, as well as training his new protégé. Layla is Kiora’s sister and has just recently discovered she, too, possesses magic. Though she cannot command all four elements or see the future like Kiora does, Dralazar seduces Layla with the promise of power and revenge. Driven by hatred and fear, Layla knowingly chooses evil over good.

Alcandar and Lomay endeavor to teach Kiora to fight. Her empathy for others continues to get in the way, much to everyone’s chagrin, but that changes when Dralazar finally gets his claws into Emane. Learning of the Creators, the Shadow, and Emane’s torture at the hands of both Dralazar and her sister, Kiora must decide to either let Emane die or to truly fight. Torn by her love for Emane and her growing feelings for Alcandar, Kiora must choose between life and death for both her and the men she has learned to love.

The origins and end goal of the Shadow are still a mystery, but Kiora begins to suspect as The Wings of Tavea and her premonitions reveal the reasons the Creators gave up their immortality and how good has been drained from the land. Kiora is not just a Solus called in an evil time, she is THE Solus. The one prophesied to come and fight the Shadow for the last time.

I can’t give away the end of the book – but suffice it to say The Wings of Tavea is an exceptional sequel. The original trilogy has been stretched to four – I am biting my nails for The Wings of Nestor which is coming soon. The Wings of Lomay will be the fourth installment in the Solus Series, and then I hope Mrs. Walls finds another story to tell, she is an author I will read for years to come.

After Wings of Arian – a wondrous adventure-packed, I wondered what direction Devri Walls would take with Wings of Tavea. And although the 1st installment still remains my favorite, book two comes in close with a 4.5/5 stars rating.

Kiora, Emane, and Drustan returns after a war against Dralazar marking their first chapter in the prophecy — one claiming Kiora and Emane will be the ones to set matters right, as The Solus and her Protector.

As if the Meros was not already creative enough, Devri Walls surprises us with another world – located on the other side of the gates — where even more bizarre creatures of magic reside. There, the trio will set off on another scarring adventure, picking up a new member along the way – a mysterious, hot-headed, yet handsome, Alcandor. Together they must try to right the wrongs, as well as battle a hidden evil. How will Kiora lead her people to fight an enemy that is shadowed in the dark? Trust is of essential, yet friendships will be questioned in this second installment to The Solus Series.

It was a great pleasure to be able to meet with the previous characters again. As much as Kiora felt it herself, I also believe she has changed – matured – since their last journey and truth be told I enjoyed her character more here. Emane is still Emane. He will always be hot-tempered and sarcastic, yet ever so lovely in regards of Kiora. Their relationship will be challenged here; (sigh) and honestly I don’t quite fancy it. Why oh why must you do this to me, Devriiiiiiiii? Since I won’t be able to tell you without spoilers’ all I am going to say is I stan Emane … FOREVER!
description

Okay … Drustan is one of those irresistible characters, whom you cannot help but love. You know what? Forget Emane-Kiora, I ship Dru-mane … Em-stan? Okay, the names are horrible, but Drustan and Emane together is always a treat. Their bickering is adorable, and always fun to read. As I was saying Drustan is a lovable character. His role here is much greater than in Wings of Arian, and it is surprising how much the other three will depend on him; let’s just say they would have all been dead without his help and abilities. Such dynamic characters, you can’t help but fall for.

As the pages kept turning, the story continues to move forward along with it. I’ve stated this before in my other review, Devri Walls has good sense. She knows how her readers will enjoy the book; when to move things forward; when to put in the action; when to settle things down; how to make it so that a quality doesn’t overpower the other. This is why you’ll never feel bored when reading her books.

Can this book be read as a stand-alone?

I suppose it can, however I do not advise it. Plus, you’ll want to follow Kiora’s story from the beginning; too great of an adventure to pass over. You also won’t be able to fully grasp the concepts and emotions the characters are feeling, which allows you to better understand them.

Recommend and happy reading!

Wings of Tavea is book two in the Solus Series. After reading Wings of Arian, I was really excited to jump into this one. It starts back up where book one ends with Kiora, Drustan and Emane traveling through the open gates into an unknown world. They have no idea of what lurks on the other side of the gates; however, they are informed that nothing good has stayed. When they meet Alcander, the Tavean prince is not so thrilled but inclines to take them to Lomay, an ancestor to one of the creators. Eleana sends Arturo to assist Kiora with her inner demons as she battles strange enemies along their journey.

My favorite character is Alcander. He is stubborn, powerful and insightful. As soon as Kiora meets him, there is an immediate stirring that calls to her. She fights through bouts of confusion with feelings for Emane as well as those for Alcander. With her magic growing stronger by the day, she knows that she can’t let her emotions get the best of her when everyone’s lives are on the line. She is the Solus and Emane is her Protector. They both have a job to do in order to restore the good in the land…even when everything left may only be the evil that threatens to destroy them. One of my favorite parts of this story is being able to relate to Kiora’s emotional turmoil regarding death. The author portrays a wonderful explanation of how her feelings are totally acceptable; yet, the message that is being conveyed by Arturo is an ultimate truth which I feel is tremendously insightful and becomes a powerful motivation for her throughout the story. Lomay is another character which I find to be curious about. I am not sure whether I like him or not because he is very vague with his personality and inquisitiveness. Kiora and Emane are torn with whom they can trust; especially, when Drustan’s disdain for the camps that they visit become so apparent with their treatment of shifters.

Overall, I really love this series thus far. I can’t wait to pick up the third in the series and start reading. I enjoy the author’s writing style and her creativity with creating an entirely new world is completely astounding. All characters are very much developed, some are even complex and I do really like most all of them…even Dralazar and Layla. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys Fantasy and young adult fiction and I rate this book with five stars. For starters, it is a continuation of an adventure and I really get into these types of books. This one always pulled me in and held my attention. It was very unpredictable and the anticipation always kept me guessing or wanting to read more into the characters themselves.

After reading Wings Of Arian I was so glad that I had Wings Of Tavea ready to continue with, as I don't think that I could have walked away without reading book #2!

Wings Of Arian is based more around a place void of Evil, Wings Of Tavea is the opposite, its a place void of good; or at least very little good exists.
We know; from Wings Of Arian; that Emane has been give a magical snake armband and when Dralazar tried to remove it, it sunk its fangs into his hand. In book #2 Dralazar has learnt that the cure for his snake bite is...(I won't complete this as it would spoil it for you)! This cure made me smile because I quite frankly, think that there is a better chance of Hell freezing over than Dralazar actually getting that cure!! But Dralazar being Dralazar he tries anyway! (I'll give him 10 out 10 for trying)!!!

I was totally shocked at the appearance of Alcander, and I was gob-smacked when events involving Alcander turned the way they did. I like Alcander, but I do have reservations about him too, maybe this will change as the series progresses. Alcander tries to keeps his feelings hidden or pushes them aside; unlike Emane.

As well as meeting Alcander we also meet Lomay. I found Lomay interesting. He seems to have a habit of doing the wrong things for the right reasons, or he does the right things but goes about it the wrong way.

The Wings Of Tavea sees both new and old characters making appearances and playing key roles throughout. I have loved every minute that I have spent in these lands with these totally amazing characters. Especially Emane!!
Once again Devri Walls carried me off into Kiora and Emane's world through her amazing and vivid descriptions. This world is a world full of creatures that I have heard of before and creatures that I've never heard of before. But after reading Wings Of Tavea and journeying through its world I feel as though I know all of the creatures, characters and places very well.

The characters all face their own personal trials and problems as well as those they face together. Some of these only help to strengthen them and help them grow as characters. Its not just the characters that face these trials either, as a reader I did too.

Throughout Wings Of Tavea I was taken on an epic journey through magical unknown lands packed to breaking point with amazing creatures, adventure, love and evil too. No doubt you'll laugh, cheer, shout and maybe even shed a tear or two! I did!

This is one series that if you haven't started to read yet I would strongly recommend grabbing yourself a copy and getting comfy!

Following Wings of Arian, Wings of Tavea starts off with Kiora, Emane, and Drustan leaving the land of Meros into a land they never knew existed but were always meant to save. This new land is full of new creatures and evil has all but eliminated all that was once good in the land, and Kiora finds she must harness her magic and save a world from the power of the Shadow before it's too late.

I started Tavea right after I read Arian's book, it's one of those stories that requires you to keep going no matter how tired you must be. As with the first book, Devri Walls kept my attention riveted to the story with the new land, it's new creatures, and a whole new threat all together. The writing is light and fun which makes this an easy read, and most of the characters are likeable.

One of the reasons why I wont be giving this book a higher rating is because of Kiora herself. As stated before in Arian's review, I disliked her character. For someone who is suppose to be all powerful and will eventually save the world, Kiora's constant running and crying took away from so much of this story. And I understand that she will be THE Solus of all Soluses, but before this journey began, she knew nothing of magic, so why does everything come easy for her? I saw no growth in her character whatsoever, and I'm disappointed, I was hoping she'd embrace her destiny with a little more fierceness.

The dreaded love triangle. I'm no fan of them, and I know lots of readers who like myself cannot fathom them at all, and adding it to Tavea was... unnecessary. Alcander was an interesting character and I loved his persona, but why include him into the story as the third love interest? I wasn't sold on the idea of this particular menage.

One other thing I enjoyed about reading this book was that it switches POV's, so you don't always get Kiora's view of the world. There's also Alacander, Emane, and we can't forget about Dralazar too. As the trio march on in the new world, they discover new allies and creatures as well as encounter evil in a way they never had before. It's still a learning experience with this book though. There is so much Kiora must learn before she can defeat the evil that has inhabited this land.

I am however, looking forward to finishing up this series. For fans of High Fantasy, magic, and good vs evil, Wings of Tavea will take you on a journey where lies and betrayal lie in every turn.

4.5 Stars

'Wings of Tavea', the second book in The Solus Trilogy, picks up right where the first book left off. Kiora has finally gotten on the right path since getting her world turned upside down and started on her journey. However, the things she once saw in only black and white now seem to have shades of gray that are blurring the lines. What she and Prince Emane, her Protector, find once they leave Meros is worse than either could've expected. The Shadow - an overwhelming evil force - has taken over the land and forced the Good into hiding. There are tons of new creatures, who are both dangerous and mysterious, as well as a new companion on their journey - Alcander, who is a Tavean and their guide - and who also tends to attract a whole new kind of trouble for Kiora.

Just like the first book in this brilliant trilogy, the second installment was a enchanting fantasy that continued to mix action, mystery, adventure, magic, alternate realms, and strange creatures together to form another awesome book. The characters continued to be interesting, if not a bit stereotypical at times. Kiora continued to show a lot of character growth throughout the book as she steps up to take on the unknown outside her home and face her destiny and the journey before them head on. She is easy to identify and empathize with, so I found myself continuing to root for her throughout the story. Prince Emane finally showed a bit more of his character and undergoes some character growth of his own in this installment, which I liked. Again, I really loved the intricate details and descriptions that the author put into creating the world of the novel and the history and politics surrounding the characters and the storyline. It added a great depth to the novel that made it all the more believable. The writing continued to be excellent and had a fast pace, which made it a major page turner. It drew me in with building on the setting, characters, and magic from the first book while introducing new dimensions, creatures, and a new character in Alcander - who definitely riled things up. Overall, this is a fantastic second book in a truly intriguing trilogy.

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Wings of Tavea picks up right where Wings of Arian ends and we are once again thrown into an incredible adventure with tons of awesome world-building.

Once again, we are introduced to a wide array of fantastical creatures, every one unique.

The characters were developed a lot more, allowing me to connect with them better which I was lacking in the first book. Kiora really grows as a character as she finally sees the full extent of what is destined for her to accomplish and sees a whole new evil. She also learns new ways to use her magical abilities and some of the things she can do are really creative.

We don’t get to see Emane much in this book, but we get to meet Alcander – yes it is a love triangle, but it is not straightforward at all. Alcander and Emane were much alike but had different personalities – Alcander being the strong and silent type. Where Kiora’s relationship with Emane was nothing beyond cute, she had a lot more chemistry with Alcander. This added a great emotional aspect to the novel which I loved.

This book is a lot darker than the first. The main villain in this book is the Shadow, who at first seems slightly cliche – darkness stealing the light of good, begins to make sense as we learn the back stories of the Shadow’s origin. Evil creatures are introduced and we see the full extent of evil’s corruption. Also, the battles are a lot more violent as well.

What I liked most about this book was that we learn more about both the history of the world and the history of the characters.

After a great beginning, the middle of the book felt boring and drawn-out. Yet the end more than made up for this. It was super intense and I literally could not put the book down. I was treated to anticipation, non-stop action and emotional content. I need the next book now!

If the next book is darker and more intense than this one – I think I might have to lock myself in my room to finish it. In all it was a really great book from all angles and I highly recommend it to all fantasy fans.

This book picks up pretty soon where Wings of Arian left. I enjoyed this book better than book 1 for some reason. Maybe, there was more action?

Kiora, Emane and Durstan are off to a new Adventure. Now that the gates are down they are sent to the other side of the mountain that was blocked off by Dralazar and Eleana via magic. Eleana and the others have sent Kiora & the gang to Lomay for further knowledge and training. The other side is even darker and is surrounded by this unknown evil known as the Shadow. Nobody knows who or what the shadow is.

Kiora is a magnet for everything evil. The moment she steps on the other side the whole gang is faced with different predators or unknowns. Durstan is a huge help as he used to belong to this side. I love him and his sarcastic dialogue. He is too good. Then, meet Alcander! We thought Emane was a proud, rude, arrogant prince. Well, you have not met Alcander. He is hot, arrogant, gorgeous Tavean prince. He has been waiting for the Solus for a long time and is actually surprised to realize that Kiora is a solus. I liked him actually a lot. He had a depth to him and a deeper layer that he kept well hidden. And, he does seem to have the hots for our girl. And she for him it seems. Who wouldn't? lol

Well, as their journey begins and they learn more and more from Lomay. The life that has been going on the other side of the gate for all this time and few more realizations by Kiora. There are events that lead up to a battle between Kiora and Dralazar. Quite a surprising end to that.

Kiora and the gang are on the run again from their enemies. I am definitely interested to find out what the next book leads up to. I am not looking forward to the love triangle which is inevitable. I have changed to Team Alcander now after this book. I just feel he is a better match for Kiora. That's all.

This is the second book in the Solus series. There may be minor spoilers if you have not read book 1, but nothing that should ruin your experience. You will definitely want to read book one before beginning book 2.

We've all hear of the sophomore slump for series, well this book breaks the rules and a just barely takes a little dip. With a very full 4 star rating it was a great continuation to Wings of Arian. Picking up very quickly after book one ends, Kiora and Emane venture through the newly opened gate into a vast world they never imagined existed - a world Meros had been locked away from for ages. Kiora thought the creatures she had already met to be new and strange - well she hasn't seen anything yet.

But this world is far from a new paradise. A strange evil has covered the land and driven the good deep into hiding. This evil seems so powerful that even Kiora's old enemy, Dralazar, fades into the background - at least for a bit. Kiora's guide to this new world is a Tavean named Alcander. He's seems decent enough if you can get past the arrogant, selfish, egotistic, self-righteous, and know it all attitude - a little bit too much like Emane's beginnings for my taste.

As Kiora learns to harness new powers and learns of new prophecies and destinies all piled one on top of the other, it's amazing she doesn't break down completely. Another book full of action and wonder. I loved some of the new creatures and the way Wells took traditional ideas and tweaked them into something new and exciting. Even the creatures we were familiar with from book one take on a new twist in the lands outside of Meros - having evolved into totally different cultures.

This book only confirmed my belief that this will be a great new fantasy series and I dug into book three the next day. And on a side note - I really love these covers - book three is amazing!

***Read Wings of Arian first***
***Possible SPOILERS. Do not read unless you have read the first book.***

The Solus series is a MUST - READ for magic lovers. Creativity flourishes in unique adventures and uncharted schemes. The prose effectively creates an atmosphere of intrigue. The story-line is truly incredible. Devri Walls meticulously constructed a broad collection of paranormal creatures that had otherwise been a gray area for me.

Wings of Tavea, quite literally held my mind captive.  As much as I needed to finish it quickly, the desire to prolong the story because I didn't want my enjoyment to come to an end. I thoroughly enjoyed the new circumstances but also felt the same home sickness of the characters and still harness a desire to read Wings of Arian again. I want to enjoy the euphoria of a first love as much as possible.

The story continues where Wings of Arian ends. The striking new personalities that emerge from the introduction of new characters ensures there will be no need to refresh any monotony. I had to step back for a second at just the how much the traits belonging to both Emane and Alcander resembled one another. Taking Kiora’s love for Emane into consideration,  I had to calm my nagging suspicions of an upcoming love triangle.  Because of Kiora’s steadfast purity I can't believe what actually happened! It's intense and Kiora’s emotions are easily empathized leaving the reader feeling as lost as she.

The author is wonderfully inventive and I can only hope she spends the rest of her life writing these incredible books for us!

I am officially addicted to the Solus series and wasting time before jumping into book three is impossible.

Another 5 star book! You WILL enjoy it just as much as I have.

This book continues shortly after the first, as they decide to journey into unknown territory past the gate that kept them closed in all these years. One of things I loved the most was the new land that they got to explore. The land gets expanded to a place filled with magic and awesome new types of magical creatures for them to meet. The only problem for them is that there’s way more danger and those new people are out to kill them. Most of the light and goodness is gone, and it’s full of evil.

Kiora was still not my favourite character in this. She was definitely powerful and kind, but there were still quite a few things about her that bugged me. She starts to develop a crush and feelings for a new character introduced in this book, while she still can’t admit any thing she might feel for Emane. She keeps seeing Emane’s shortcomings and not how he compliments her, especially since he doesn’t come across magic naturally. She still feels a lot of pain when people get killed, even if they’re enemies, but she almost gets people hurt because she won’t fight to save them in the first place. I of course think Emane is the strongest character in this book, he goes through so much to protect her, no matter how weak others think him to be or put him down.

If you've read the first book, definitely continue on with this one!

Walls has a background in theater, and it shows in her writing. Witty dialogue and strong characters bring life to every scene. The fantasy world is brimming with magic and amazing creatures. I was especially fascinated by the interactions between the Taveans, Shifters, and humans.

I love a good love-triangle, and this story doesn't disappoint. The best part--I can't decide whom I want Kiora to be with! That's a sign of a well-written story. No black-and-whites, but realistic gray areas that leave the reader guessing and excited to see what happens.

Dralazar is an awesome villain, but the Shadow is even scarier. The Shadow's evil is on an epic scale, seemingly impossible to defeat. I don't know how Kiora and her team will fight it in the next book!

I stayed up half the night in order to finish WINGS OF TAVEA. Considering how precious sleep is to me, that's the best compliment I can give to a book. The tension builds to an action-packed climax that had me on the edge of my seat. I wasn't sure how it would end, but I was satisfied with the results. Now I'm eagerly awaiting Book 3! Walls is a budding author with much to offer her readers. If you haven't yet read WINGS OF ARIAN, check it out first! I highly recommend this series to fantasy-lovers. Parents, you can rest easy--this book is cleaner than 95% of the other YA books out right now. A great choice for your teens!

So, I just want to start out by saying that this is the second book in a series and I did not read the first book, so I was a little lost in the beginning as I was being caught up as well as having the story move forward.

From what I read and picked up, though, I think that even if one doesn't read the first book it is still readable.

Now onwards to the story. I absolutely love high fantasy. In my opinion this feels like one of the most creative genres around because essentially a whole world with a whole new set of rules is being created and anything can happen. Kiora, our heroine, is a mess that even she doesn't know how to handle.

Walls brings together a world of intrigue where lies and deception can come from some of the most unexpected places. And when Kiora travels to new lands, the reader gets swept away by this tale.

Overall, I loved it. The imagery was beautiful, the story was beautiful, and a lot of the characters really surprised me.

I have to go out and find the first one and read it because I think this story would be so much better (not to mention just help me figure out what happened beforehand).

If one thing can be said about Walls is that she is just a natural storyteller that takes the audience in and never lets go.
