Muriel Chase is like any other young woman who's 17th birthday is just weeks away. Her life is simple: she likes going to the beach, she enjoys working out, she loves to go shopping with her mom . . . and she hunts demons.
As part of a secret group, she is sent around the world to face the demons that are so dangerous that even the Vatican can't handle them.
Along the way to learning the secrets of the fight against true evil, she meets Michael - her protector, sworn to keep her safe. As they start to fall for each other, their world is turned upside down by monsters and evil creatures lurking in the darkness. But Muriel has a very dark secret, and if discovered, it could threaten more than just her relationship with Michael . . . but all of humanity.
There were a few typos ("bear in mind" and the pope switched from 19th to 16th), the author's descriptions were pretty good, but nothing grabbed me. The characters almost got me, but then they'd fall flat. She can sense someone looking at her in the mall, but not the past 2 years? Her mom is ok with all these "church retreats" that happen on short notice AND she comes back beaten? They've been watching and listening to her alllllllll this time... they sew bugs on her? Then, at the end, she's suddenly copasetic with what they revealed she is? The ending itself is a bit disappointing as well. Am I curious enough to buy book 2? No. Also, the first book is 245 pages or so and $3.99. The second book is 220 pages or so and is $6.99. I might be a little curious, but not spending more to get less!
Unfortunately, I don't feel the need to finish this book. I can get over all the errors-i.e. switching back and forth between past and present tense, missing words, etc. What I cannot overlook is the slow pacing of this story. Sure, the exorcism scenes are great; however, everything else just feels like filler. After reading nothing but 5 star reviews for this story, I am more than a little disappointed. Still, I'm giving Chasing Darkness 3 stars, because the action scenes were exciting and I even laughed out loud once or twice. This book has potential, but sadly lacks that special thing that keeps me reading until all hours of the night.
There were a lot of good ideas in this book but overall, it was just 'okay' for me. I couldn't get past the idea that Muriel's mother was okay with her going on last minute 'church retreats' and coming back repeatedly injured. I also wasn't convinced the Muriel was this bad-ass demon hunter, her 'technique' seemed lacking. The 'big reveal' at the end surrounding Muriel's heritage has potential for the next book in the series.
Enjoyed it up until the end when it brought in living characters which didn't seem to work. Then there was the odd typo which was making me refer back to double check what I had read. I would consider reading on just to see what happens but not top of the reading lists.
This could have been a fantastic book and the storyline was great. I really liked Muriel and some of the Vatican staff such as Mr Green. If it was based on story alone, this would be a 4 star book. However, the spelling and grammar are atrocious and really spoilt the flow and enjoyment of it.
This is one of the best books that I have read . It has this twist, a wait a minute, what the.I hate to think of some members of the Vatican as evil, but all things are possible in and out of real life. Excited to get on to book 2
