In this volume, the reader will find elaborated the Marxist scientific outlook on religion and a brief exposure of the foolish attempts of Lunacharsky, Gorky, and others at "god building." Lenin debunks conclusively the "militant atheist" trend in Marxism (these "militant atheists" being reminiscent of the long-refuted Jacques Hébert) and those who believe that Marxism can be separated from its scientific materialist outlook. An important read for those interested in the Marxist understanding of religion and spiritualism.

February 19, 2024Lenin’in dinin toplumsal işlevi ve dine karşı sosyalistlerin alması gereken tutumu açıkladığı kısacık bir kitap. Dinin toplumsal işlevi konusunda Lenin’in kendinden önceki Marksistlerden farklı bir şey söylediği yok aslında. Kapitalist toplumu köle toplumu olarak niteleyerek bu yapının temel dayanaklarından biri olarak dini niteliyor:
“Bugünkü toplum, tamamen geniş emekçi kitlelerin nüfusunun ufak bir azınlığı; yani toprak sahipleri ve kapitalistler sınıfı tarafından sömürülmesi esası üzerine kurulmuştur. Bütün yaşamları boyunca kapitalistler hesabına çalışan “özgür” işçilere sadece kazanç sağlayan kölelerin yaşamını sürdürmeye, kapitalist köleliğin güvenini ve sürekliliğini sağlamaya yetecek oranda geçim olanağı “tanındığından”, bu toplum bir köle toplumudur.”

Ancak dinle mücadele konusunda pragmatik olmayı önererek aktif mücadeleyi reddediyor. Engels’in belirttiğini tekrarlayarak dine karşı savaş açmanın militan dinciliği uyandıracağını ve gerçek hedeften saptırma yaratacağını belirtiyor:
“Engels dine karşı böylesi savaş açmanın “Bismarck’ı geride bırakacak ölçüde Bismarck’cılık” yani Bismarck’ın dine (ünlü Kültür Savaşı-Kulturkampf, 1870’lerde Alman Katolik Partisine, “Merkez” partiye karşı polis kovuşturmasıyla) karşı giriştiği mücadeleyi boşuna tekrarlamaktan başka bir şey olmadığını tekrarlamıştır. Bismarck bu mücadeleyle katoliklerin militan dinciliğini uyarmaktan ve gerçek kültür çalışmalarını zedelemekten öte bir yarar sağlamamıştır.”
“Ne olursa olsun tanrıya savaş açılmasını isteyen bir anarşist, gerçekte papazlara ve burjuvaziye yardım ediyor demektir (ki anarşistler uygulamada her zaman burjuvaziye yardım ederler).”
Dikkatimi çeken son husus ise devrim öncesi Duma’da grupları bulunan sosyalistlerin söylevlerinde çok cüretkar görünmeleri. Bugünün meclislerinde söylenemeyecek derecede sistem karşıtı, devrimci bir söylemleri var. Tabii bunları daha çok satır aralarından anlıyorsunuz.

In this book you can clearly see why leftists see religion as one of their core enemies, because marxism itself is a religion, it sees other religions as competition no matter what.
Marxism is as dangerous as a religion at its peak, it operates in the exact same medium and aims to fill the exact same space.
After having been a marxist myself for almost a decade and having seen how they act and having reviewed their opinions on religion as well, I can clearly say that I'd prefer dealing with Abrahamic religions rather than Marxism because they leave a lot of personal space for you to hide into when under their yoke, marxism penetrates even the smallest corners of your being and aims to destroy you as a person to make you part of a whole and I'm saying this as an adamant atheist.
Thinking again on it, the BORG Collective is the perfect analogy of marxism.

This booklet should be of great interest to any marxist curious about the role of religion in class struggle and the kind of attitude radical social democrats, the workers and the Party should adopt with respect to religious allies who are nonetheless sympathetic to the proletarian cause. I appreciate how Lenin's statements are unambiguous without being absolute, grounded as they are in a ruthlessly astute analysis of the current material circumstances.
For instance, he recognizes 'freedom of conscience' and the notion of religion being a matter of 'private affair' but only from the point of view of the State. For the Party, however, as a matter of principle, marxism is necessarily militantly atheist (again, not under all circumstances).
Unlike Blanquists and anarchists of Lenin's day who wanted to abolish religion in one fell swoop in an abstract, theoretical fashion, Lenin maintains that religious differences must sometimes be tactically subordinated to the needs of the class struggle. It is all the more imperative in the Russian situation because of its general backwardness compared to the advanced capitalist nations of the West, in which the bourgeosie have triumphantly carried out the secularization of the relationship between Church and State.
Tactical alliance with non marxist materialists and natural scientists.
There is also a bit of comradely polemic by Lenin against a fellow marxist journalist who favored 'god building' or the invention of new religious ideals and values, an endorsement which Lenin condemns as a reactionary and a misguided bourgeosie abstraction of the ideal of God from the concrete materialist conditions.
