What do a vampire, a witch, and two mermaids all have in common?

Their thirst for power; for blood.

Radley is a vampire with a thirst for mermaid blood, yet the touch of water wreaks havoc on his skin. Katya and Yana are mermaids, they thirst for legs and being able to walk again. And Alena, she's the witch who made them all that way.

Only one of them can get their own way, but who will it be?

JOSEPH EASTWOOD was born on the 9th of June 1993, in Lancaster, England, although he’s fairly certain that he’s only a visitor on Earth. Wait unless you’re the with government, in which case, Joseph is a human being with human interests, such as reading, and not dissecting human beings in order to use them in his—ahem—fiction.

He has many writing interests, including young adult, poetry, fantasy, thriller, and even romance, so make sure that you look at the recommended age guidelines before you pick up your next JOSEPH EASTWOOD book.

This short book is very clever in it's use of fantasy. It brings a lot of questions to the reader. It made me wonder what would happen to the creatures next. I think this is the first time I have read a vampire story containing Mermaids, which was rather interesting. If you want something quick, easy and exciting to read. This is surely for you.

Before reading this story, I was a little skeptical. At an estimated 18 pages, I was very unsure how it could fulfill what the synopsis claimed. I was under the impression that it was just an introduction to a larger series, but even an introduction needs to be good enough to capture the audience's attention and convince them to read the rest of the series.

I have read some good, detailed, well-thought-out short stories (Edgar Allan Poe, anyone?), so I knew better than to judge a story based solely on its length. However, I was disappointed in Bait. The synopsis sounded very good, and there were definitely some promising parts of the story, but overall, I found it lacking. There were several times that I found myself rereading entire sections because I was just confused. I didn't understand what was going on, and sometimes it felt like I missed things. However, due to the short length, I decided to reread it before writing my review, to see if I could understand things a little better, knowing where the story would end up.

After my second read, I did understand what was actually happening in the story a bit more, but I still felt that it needed more development. There are a history and relationships that are hinted at but never fully explained. I feel that Bait has the right idea of where it wants to go, but that it needs some more development in the story.

At the end of the story, there is an About the Author section with some author's notes that I found important. First, Over My Spilled Blood is planned to be a series of unrelated short stories, not one continuous series. However, the author states that there will be a sequel to Bait, entitled Baited. I will reserve complete judgment of Bait until I have read Baited. Baited may be able to expand on the story that was just barely hinted at in Bait, but as a standalone, I found Bait to be lacking.

I received Lumen from Mr. Eastwood late last month, with a promise I would review it. But since I'm a slow reader, and I'm not done, I decided I'd download his latest short story and review this one. You know, just to satisfy his curiosity until I finish his other book, it has nothing to do with me actually liking or wanting to read it, pfft, what?

Anyway. Bait is a short, short-short-short-short story about vampires, and mermaids, and evil. I can't tell you much, seeing how it's about 18 pages long and 300-some-odd locations on the Kindle, but I can tell you it was surprisingly well-developed. Short stories don't usually have a braid going on, and this one does. There were a few strands that had me going, "And why is this guy standing outside the window like a creep?" but it didn't really take away from it. This story really could've been flipped and turned into a full-length novel very easily.

Weirdly enough, I think it was written better when following Katya and Yana, but not so much Radley. I'm not sure why, honestly, it just seemed... I don't know. The words seemed to flow easier, like maybe the author enjoyed writing for them more? Don't quote me- Just how it came across the Kindle to me.

For a short, I really liked it. And I'm glad it has a sequel; you can't seriously leave me there... -_-

For a short, there is much going on with a vampire, mermaids and the witch that made them all the way they are. I started reading not really knowing where it was going, as I hadn't read the blurb, and was nicely surprised. It's a quick easy read, with some good twists, that will leave you wondering what's next.

Very imaginative, and I will definitely be keeping an eye on what else Joseph Eastwood comes up with.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I just finished "Bait" and all I can say is ~MORE!! this book was a bit of a departure from "Lumen" which only goes to show Mr. Eastwood's talent for both fantasy AND dark. I really enjoyed this books balance between fantasy and darkness. Vampires who feed on mermaids? Mermaids who feast on vampires? Melting faces? Decapitation?? Pure genius!!! "Bait" is a fun, dark fast read that will leave you wanting more!! Cannot wait for the sequel!!

I was given this book by the author in return for an honest review.

I was surprised by this book because for a short story it certainly packs an awful lot in.
I loved how vampires, witches and even mermaids played a part in this story.
A great read for anyone :)

This is one of those stories that I'm grateful was short. The beginning of it held some promise with the emergence of people from two stone statues guarding the doors of a mausoleum and then with the killing of one by the other whilst being observed by two teenage boys. From there it went rapidly downhill and even more quickly descended into the realms of the ridiculous with cat fights between mermaids and ending with the death of a 'witch' who happened to be the mother of one of the mermaids. Not satisfied with the gory details of that murder the mermaid then went on to kill her companion and 'friend'.

The only people I can honestly see reading and enjoying this would be younger teens at the oldest..definitely not my cup of tea

A good short which at first left me a wee bit confused.
Soon however I got the crux and subsequently I really got into the story!

A good short that is fast paced, well written and is filled with twists and turns!
