"Come accade che un lettore un po' distratto muova la matita sui margini d'un libro e tracci, a capriccio della punta e dell'assenza, piccole figure o vaghe ramificazioni di contro alle masse leggibili, cos far io, guidato dall'estro, tutt'intorno a questi studi di Edgar Degas. Accompagner le immagini di poco testo che non si possa leggere, o non leggere d'un fiato, e che non abbia coi disegni se non i legami pi lenti e i rapporti meno stretti. Insomma, non sar che una sorta di monologo, in cui riaffioreranno a loro piacimento i miei ricordi e le diverse idee che mi sono fatto di un personaggio singolare, grande e severo artista, essenzialmente volitivo, d'intelletto raro, vivo, sottile, inquieto; che nascondeva sotto l'assolutezza delle opinioni e il rigore dei giudizi non so qual dubbio su di s, non so quale disperazione di esser sentimenti amarissimi e nobilissimi, suscitati in lui dalla raffinata conoscenza dei maestri, dalla cupidigia dei segreti che attribuiva loro e dalla presenza perpetua, nella sua mente, delle loro contraddittorie perfezioni. Nell'arte egli non vedeva che problemi d'una certa matematica pi raffinata dell'altra, che nessuno ha saputo rendere esplicita e di cui ben pochi possono sospettare l'esistenza. Parlava volentieri d'arte sapiente; diceva che un quadro il risultato di una serie d'operazioni... Degas rifiutava la facilit, come rifiutava tutto quello che non fosse l'unico oggetto dei suoi pensieri."

About the author

Ambroise-Paul-Toussaint-Jules Valéry was a French poet, essayist, and philosopher. His interests were sufficiently broad that he can be classified as a polymath. In addition to his fiction (poetry, drama and dialogues), he also wrote many essays and aphorisms on art, history, letters, music, and current events.

Valéry is best known as a poet, and is sometimes considered to be the last of the French Symbolists. But he published fewer than a hundred poems, and none that drew much attention. On the night of 4 October 1892, during a heavy storm, Paul Valéry entered an existential crisis, which made a big impact on his writing career. Around 1898, his writing activity even came to a near-standstill, due partly to the death of his mentor Stéphane Mallarmé and for nearly twenty years from that time on, Valery did not publish a single word until 1917, when he finally broke this 'Great Silence' with the publication of La Jeune Parque at forty-six years of age. This obscure but superbly musical masterpiece, of 512 alexandrine lines in rhyming pairs, had taken him four years to complete, and immediately secured his fame. It is esteemed by many in France as the greatest French poem of the 20th century.

In this collection of essays Paul Valéry draws a vivid portrait of Degas, both as an artist and a personality. He illustrates his observations with his own recollections of his meetings with Degas and numerous stories about him shared by other people. Degas was a misanthrope, an eccentric and a perfectionist, probably due to lack of self-confidence. He could not finish an atrwork and if he did, he felt compelled to 'make improvements' to it. That's why his friends used to hide the paintings and drawings he had previously given to them before he visited them. The 'improved' works never came back. Similarly to his favourite subjects - dancers and horses, he was an extremely hard-working artist constantly trying to produce or find a perfect line or a perfect curve.
Some of the texts in 'Degas Danse Dessin' present Valéry's reflections on dance, drawing, painting form, poetry, etc. , the notions that are connected with Degas' life and work.

Okurken çok keyif aldığım ve sayfaların arasında kaybolduğum başka bir eser daha eklendi kitaplığıma. Tanıtımında bahsedildiği gibi denemenin sınırlarını zorlayarak birçok türü barındırıyor içinde. Sanat tarihi ve söylem ile ilgili okumalar yapmayı seviyorsanız öneririm.

This book has some texts about art in general, about Degas' view on art, and some memories the author has with Degas. I enjoyed what Valery had to say about art, he shed light into many aspects of the crisis in art we are living now. I don't know if anyone will be able to grasp what he has to say about art, it feels to me you need some prior knowledge on the matter, it's not a begginers art book. I had low expectations on this book, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Este livro estava na minha wishlist ha alguns anos. Nao sei como ele foi parar la e havia esquecido dele. Que perola. Que pequena joia. Sou suspeito para falar pois sou louco pelos impressionistas e um admirador incondicional de Edgard Degas. O livro eh uma biografia escrita por Paul Valery, amigo proximo de Degas. Valery enquanto revela a personalidade explosiva e dificil do pintor, traca um retrato incrivel da Paris do seculo 19 com todos seus personagens mais marcantes. Alem disso, se perde muitas vezes (o que eh bom) e argumenta brilhantemente sobre os mais variados assuntos. Sua descricao sobre o que eh a danca e uma dancarina eh incrivel. Revela a paixao de Degas pela fotografia ainda em seu nascimento, a paixao por bailarinas e cavalos. E como se nao bastasse Valery faz uma reflexao arrebatadora sobre o que eh a arte moderna e o que pode ser considerado arte ou nao. O livro esta recheado de passagens geniais como a comparacao que Degas faz entre bailarinas e cavalos. "Degas, generoso para poucas coisas, nao era docil para com a critica e as teorias. Ele dizia de bom grado - e repetia no final da vida - que as Musas nunca discutem entre si. Trabalham o dia inteiro, bem separadas. Ao cair da noite e depois de cumprida a tarefa, ao se encontrarem, elas dancam: elas nao falam. Ele era contudo grande polemista e argumentador terrivel, particularmente excitavel sobre assuntos de politica e de desenho. Jamais cedia, alterava rapidamente a voz, lancava as palavras mais duras, cortava bruscamente. Alceste (personagem do Misantropo, de Moliere), perto dele, pareceria um homem fraco e singelo. Mas, devido ao sangue napolitano que nele corria e que o fazia alcancar logo o tom mais agudo, podia-se sentir que as vezes apreciava o fato de ser intratavel e conhecido por todos como tal."  Recomendo o livro fortemente para qualquer pessoa que tenha alguma ligacao com arte ou que simplesmente adoram um bom livro.

Pur délice de lecture ! Pour reprendre une expression de Paul Valéry : une "fête de l'intellect".
Le prétexte en est la figure du peintre Edgar Degas (notez la quasi-anagramme entre le nom et le prénom !).
Dans un style exquis et alerte, ce court opuscule, agrémenté d'illustrations, parcourt tout le spectre de l'écriture, de la narration à l'abstraction, de l'anecdote croustillante à la réflexion subtile.
À propos de la danse, on se souviendra notamment de la description du mouvement de la méduse, de la réflexion sur l'espace, etc. Du pur génie !
Aussi : des analyses de la peinture, de sa fonction, de ses moyens...
On voit passer de nombreux autres créateurs parmi lesquels Manet, Zola, Ingres (qu'admirait Degas), Delacroix, Berthe Morisot, Monet, Mallarmé...
Et, bien sûr, la figure d'Edgar Degas, haute en couleur, paradigme de l'exigence artistique. Malgré la différence de génération et de personnalité entre le peintre et le poète, on comprend ce qui les a réunis : la plus haute exigence intellectuelle et artistique.
Cet ouvrage contient des pages et des pages que l'on aimerait retenir par cœur !

Degas, bir akşam, buyurgan bir zil sesiyle telefona koşan Forain' le alay etmişti " Demek telefon dedikleri bu... Zil çalıyor, siz de gidiyorsunuz..." Bu alaycı sözü rahatlıkla genellestirebiliriz . " Demek Ün dedikleri bu.. Adınızı anıyorlar, siz de bir şey oldum sanıyorsunuz!...

Opera binaları ve balerin resimlerinden tanıdığımız Empresyonist ressam Edgar Degas'in arkadaşı Paul Valéry ile olan anılarını ve dönemin sanatçıları ile olan ilişkilerini okuyoruz bu metinde. Degas'in felsefe, edebiyat, modern ve buyuk sanat kavramları hakkındaki görüşlerini kısa kısa metinler halinde anlatmis Paul Valéry . “İnsan bilmediğinde resim pek kolaydır… Ama bildiği zaman… ah işte o zaman!... Bambaşka bir şeye dönüşür!” demiş Degas.
Empresyonizm’in önde gelen isimlerinden biri Edgar Degas. Degas diyince aklıma en çok Paris’in Opera binasında balerinleri gözlemleyerek tabloya döktüğü muazzam eserleri aklıma gelir. Dans Degas’nın en çok kullandığı temalardan biridir.
Kitap, Degas’nın arkadaşı Paul Valery tarafından yazılmış deneme, anı tarzında ilerleyen kısacık bir eser. Sadece kendi anılarına değil Degas’yı/Degas sanatını yakından tanıyanların (Berthe Morisot, Ernest Rouart) anılarına ve düşüncelerine de yer vermiş. Valery’nin dediği gibi;
“Hani yarı dalgın bir okur bir kitabın sayfa kenarlarına bir şeyler karalar, kendini koyuverip kalemine estiği gibi, okunaklı yığınların yanına küçük varlıklar ya da belli belirsiz dallar budaklar çizer ya, ben de kendimi zihnin savrulmalarına bırakarak, aynısını Edgar Degas’nın şu birkaç çalışmasının çevresinde yapacağım.”
Degas’nın sanatı, sanatının Paul Valery’de olan etkisi, Valery’nin resim alanı ile edebiyat alanında yaptığı karşılaştrmalar, Degas’nın hayatı siyasi görüşü gibi pek çok konuya değinilmiş. Degas sanatına ilgi duyan herkesin muhakkak okuması gereken eserlerden biri.
