Anthony has been writing since the age of eight, and professionally since the age of twenty. In addition to the highly successful Alex Rider books, he is also the writer and creator of award winning detective series Foyle’s War, and more recently event drama Collision, among his other television works he has written episodes for Poirot, Murder in Mind, Midsomer Murders and Murder Most Horrid. Anthony became patron to East Anglia Children’s Hospices in 2009.
On 19 January 2011, the estate of Arthur Conan Doyle announced that Horowitz was to be the writer of a new Sherlock Holmes novel, the first such effort to receive an official endorsement from them and to be entitled the House of Silk.

What would the life of a universal author as William Shakespeare in the 21st century be like? Through the eyes of his childhood friend, Martin Holland, learn about the life and works of a modern Shakespeare that moves in the dark world of cinema in Los Angeles. A novel that combines suspense and mystery, and puts into question topics such as the consumer society, the despair of the artist and the vision of youth who is recovering at maturity.
The story is largely set in a separate world, that of the stars in Hollywood. This fact gives the author a lot of possibilities and leads to unexpected and perhaps even absurd situations. That sometimes makes it rather difficult to place, because you just can not imagine something like this would happen to you. Yourself in that situation, but the story is not quite so far away that it really is unlikely, the events are actually all perfectly possible.
The storyline is easy to follow. The events are exciting, and the voltage is gradually increased. You get different pieces, but only at the last, everything seems to fall into place. That is, of course, excellent for a crime novel. The construction of the story fits very well with the kind of story and in the end everything is indeed clear.

The book starts off with the news that William Shakespeare was killed. The rest of the story is built around a former childhood friend of his, Martin Holland. Soon, he notices a few things about the murder that do not add up. Police claim he's the killer is only a mere burglar who, after being surprised by Shakespeare, shoots Shakespeare in a panic. The LA detective believes that Martin had better return to England since it is apparent he is wasting his time in LA. But Martin is only beginning to discover what had become of his friend, and someone wants to know more about the circumstances in which he died. Little by little, he comes to know things about the turbulent life of the famous writer. Martin also comes in contact with many people who knew William, but he gets the impression that they would rather be rid of him is. And the more he learns, the more precarious his own situation becomes. A series of unexpected factors start to influence Martin's life and a lot of coincidences cross his path. Only in the last few pages will all the pieces fit together.

'William S.' verteld het fictieve levensverhaal van de wereldberoemde dichter en toneelschrijver William Shakespeare, mocht deze in de twintigste eeuw geleefd hebben. De ik-verteller, Tom Holland, is een oude schoolvriend van William Shakespeare, in wiens schaduw hij altijd gestaan heeft. De jaren dreven hen uiteen. Hollands ooit beste vriend werd beroemd, verhuisde naar Hollywood en sterft als wereldberoemde scenarist in de metropool aan de Westkust. Shakespeares vrouw vraagt Tom, na haar mans dood, zijn lijk over te brengen naar Groot-Brittannië. William is vermoord door een dief, die in paniek raakte toen hij betrapt werd, althans dat is het verhaal van de autoriteiten.
Aangekomen in de luxueuze villa van zijn kameraad uit lang vervlogen tijden, vindt Holland niets dat wijst naar de Shakespeare, die hij gekend heeft. Al snel wijst alles erop, dat de moord geen stom ongeluk was en hij wil er het fijne van weten. Maar wat hem drijft is niet het mysterie. Hij wil begrijpen waarom zijn vriend deze ommezwaai in zijn leven maakte, waarom zijn gewonnen Oscars beklad op hun sokkels staan, waarom er nergens persoonlijke eigendommen opgehangen lijken te zijn. Hoe goed kende Tom Holland deze man en wil hij weten wie William Shakespeare werd in deze celebritywereld? Als lezer blijf je op gelijke voet met Tom Holland, geen flashbacks, geen vooruitwijzingen. Beetje bij beetje ontwikkeld zich voor je ogen een web van connecties en maffiapraktijken, waarin Holland meer en meer verstrikt geraakt. Maar wat mij het meest boeide was de kracht van de roem op de persoonlijkheid van Shakespeare en de ontwikkeling ervan. Al gauw wordt er spanning gecreëerd in de twee verschillende verhaallijnen.
Ik ontdekte Anthony Horowitz toen ik ongeveer tien jaar was. 'De kracht van vijf' heb ik enorm graag gelezen; een vijfdelige surreële reeks over het gevecht tussen Goed en Kwaad. Een paar jaar verder kan ik me nu beter vinden in volwassen boeken, die qua zinsbouw complexer en qua thema dieper uitgewerkt zijn. Ook al schreef Horowitz 'William S.' met de doelgroep volwassenen voor ogen, miste ik wat diepgang. Dit boek brengt een fijn gevoel met zich mee voor alle vroegere Horowitz liefhebbers.

Ik heb niet zoveel ervaring met het genre, maar ik vond het alleszins geen aanrader. Hoewel het boek fijn op gang komt, zijn de laatste honderd pagina's enorm moraliserend, best wel ouderwets en het blijft maar aanslepen. Verder dan "ik weet het ondertussen wel" en "ja, ja" waren de meest gedachte gedachten.

Anna en William Shakespeare zijn getrouwd. William sterft op bizarre wijze, zijn beste vriend Holland onderzoekt de oorzaak. Hij nestelt zich serieus in de problemen. Onverwacht einde en best leuk verhaal. Geschreven in bedrijven, maar toch meer fan van Horowitz als jeugdauteur.

At first sight William S is written as a classic thriller American style but then with some English humor and in a vintage Horrowitz sinister atmosphere. And luckily with an unexpected ending…

Briljant verhaal. Een ouderwetse whodunit met de nodige twists maar ook met alle mogelijke elementen van Shakespeare's toneelstukken erin verwerkt.
