While this novel is set in the Setenid Blight world, it can be read as a stand-alone novel since no prior knowledge is required to enjoy it.
Two months ago, high school senior, Risa Neely had it all going for her: good friends, a good education, and a supportive mother. But all that changed the night her new stepfather attacked her. When her friends and even her own mother believe her stepfather's twisted lies, she has no other alternative but to turn to her absentee father.
Just when she thinks she's been able to move on and carve out a very safe, albeit lonely existence, bad-boy Brodie Decker, the school's hottest man-whore, literally knocks her off her feet. Drawn to the way she's completely unimpressed by him, Brodie knows she hides herself behind a mask and is determined to get underneath it. But he's blindsided by the connection they feel for each other.
Can Brodie accept Risa as a permanent fixture in his life? Can Risa trust Brodie enough to tell him her awful secrets? And will their connection be enough to hold them together when their friends, family members, and entire city are pulled under a deadly Setenid Blight quarantine?
Adley Maddox has lived all over the United States with her husband and two daughters. She loves spending time with her family, snuggling her little pups, and consuming books voraciously. When she isn’t working and trying to give her girls all the time and attention they demand, she continues to write her character’s stories in the hopes of sharing them with her readers.
I loved this action packed paranormal romance. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Kimberly Montague captures the insecurities of not only our heroine but our hero as well. Brodie seems bigger than life on the outside but he is struggling with his own demons inside. You can truly feel his desire to be accepted and loved despite his actions to the contrary as opposed to Risa's pain and vulnerability that hides her inner strength.
Risa Neely's life changed the night her stepfather tried to sexually attack her. The way she looked at the world changed immediately after that, when her mother took her stepfathers side. The betrayal of her friends and family left her no choice but to reach out to her absentee biological father. She left everything she knew: A good school, great clothes and a charmed life. Now she lives with the father she has never known in a subdued quiet atmosphere punctuated with infrequent and awkward conversations. Her friends now only consist of the adult office staff at the new high school she is attending. Making matters even more uncomfortable, her father is dating the school guidance counselor.
Seventeen year old Risa hides her pain behind ugly dark clothes and her once beautiful blonde hair is now dyed black in hopes that she doesn't attract any attention. A lunch run for the office has placed her on the school's gorgeous bad boy,Brodie's, radar. He has not only noticed her but decided that her unaffected response to him makes her a challenge, her boring world may never be the same. Now Brodie keeps showing up everywhere Risa turns, and she is afraid that she won't be able to keep up the unaffected routine because she is, in fact, very affected.
Brodie, a Senior who is known around school for skipping classes and breaking hearts, feels something inside him shift when he is with Risa. Yes, he still wants to sleep with her, but for the first time he really just wants to be be around Risa. As much as Risa is attracted to Brodie her self-esteem and ability to trust have been so damaged by her deviant step fathers actions that she wonders constantly if she will ever be able to have a normal relationship. But Brodie is finding that he is very patient where Risa is concerned and building her trust in him is his new priority. Brodie's friends also embrace Risa in to their group and they are all soon spending time together.
As they fall in love Risa begins to consider taking her bond with Brodie to the next level by choosing to be intimate with him but she knows she must trust him completely before taking that next step. She is also finding out that her dad may not be the bad guy that her mother has made him out to be since their divorce. Her dad keeps reaching out to her in hopes of establishing the father/daughter bond he claims he's always wanted. But for Risa trust is a fragile thing that doesn't happen easily. Just when things in Risa's life start to seem stable she becomes very ill. Brodie's grandmother, a nurse, suspects it may be more then just a normal flu.
After having been given a vaccination at school, several students including Risa are becoming deathly ill. Those teenagers that go to the hospital seeking treatment are disappearing. The horror doesn't stop there because this infection seems to be turning once normal people into flesh eating, blood drinking aggressive maniacs. As Brodie and his grandmother try to help Risa through the illness others close to them may not make it. Now their fledgling love is faced with unbelievable challenges and the possibility of losing those closest to them to this awful infection.
This is like getting to experience the magic of the first book all over again, but with a whole new cast. And it’s set in Albuquerque, which if you noticed it mentioned in book two, is going to warn you of some things. Plus Dev mentioned them, just not by name. It can completely be read as a standalone. I know it often says that, and I usually disagree, but with this one there’s enough that you can. It doesn’t have much of a build-up or background info filtering through as the main series, so you’d be getting a different introduction to the infected, but it’s still there. Risa is a broken MC, running from her past. This is a she changes him sort of story, (which personally I think ends bad ten years down the track, but there’s no guarantee these two will even live that long) because he’s never felt this way about a girl before. Brodie is still questionable in this book past the point he really should have been because they haven’t had the ‘official talk’ which is probably the only part of this book I don’t like. He knows Risa’s a little fragile, and if he really cared he shouldn’t be pulling that crap. (No cheating, but he is a pathological flirt). Most of the time he’s attentive and doting, but it does come across for a while as new challenge until he steps up and makes her swoon. But we have redemption arcs, and first love, and zombies infecteds. Cameos happen at the very end, hopefully we get to see more of this group in future.
Kimberly Montague truly astonished me with her YA series! I mean I had read in the past her adult novel Until the Morning Sun, so I was already familiar with her writing style and I kind of knew what this author is capable of, but still, I think that YA is her strong point.
Manipulated is the third novel in her Setenid Blight series and even if I hadn't read the previous two books in the series, as Kimberly says, it can be read as a stand alone. I didn't feel lost at any point in her narration, the world building and the details of the whole setting were given in a way that helped me follow the story and slowly get into everything. I can't really say if I missed anything not having read this series in its order, except maybe the fact that I now really want to read them just to satisfy my curiosity :P
Honestly, Kimberly Montague did an amazing job and helps her readers follow the story even if they haven't read the previous two books in the series. After all, Manipulated features a brand new couple, and characters of the previous novels only make a brief appearance, at least as far as I could tell.
Manipulated isn't your typical YA novel. It starts much like a contemporary romance title would only to change direction somewhere after the second half and become a much darker urban fantasy one. This split in the narration is what made me love so much this novel and at the same time it was my main source of problems. Funny right? Let me explain.
You see, the fact that I was expecting an Urban Fantasy novel and it started with a very contemporary romance feeling took me by surprise, a really pleasant surprise. I loved seeing Risa and Brodie get together, how their relationship evolved and most of all I liked reading about the changes in Risa herself and her relationship with her father after all the bad things that happened to her. Especially Risa's relationship with her father is maybe my favorite part of the whole book. I loved the way Montague slowly worked the details of their tenuous relationship and the misunderstandings that kept them apart.
But, like I said, Manipulated in essence is an Urban Fantasy novel and somewhere along the second half of the book, it was more than obvious where the story was heading. And I didn't mind this change, if only the transition was smoother. I kind of felt that everything exploded rather untimely or maybe a little bit unexpectedly. There wasn't a balance, and from a teen romance/drama, the whole novel turned into a dystopian fight for survival. And if only that transition was smoother, I would have no problem whatsoever with that. On the contrary. But as it is, I feel like the biggest part of this book is contemporary and only a small part Urban Fantasy. There's no balance between those two genres. And as a result, vital information about the virus and how exactly that dark world operated are missing. There wasn't simply too much space for the world to unfold. It was consumed by Risa and Brodie's love story, which I really liked, but it kind of ruined the balance of the narration.
The character development is really good, with both main and secondary characters being explored. The plot, if split in half is evenly paced. The romantic part and the action part have a pace of their own, they just don't meet each other. I really don't know if I'm making much sense :P
All in all, Manipulated is a fascinating novel, that apart from some details is a great YA story. I fell in love with Risa and Brodie and I'm looking forward to see how things will unfold in their future. And I hope that in the future instalment most of my questions will be answered. The ending left me craving for more :)
I liked this book much better than book 1 and 2 because the characters were more interesting. Compared to book 1 and 2 where it was insta-love between the two leads, this one seems more realistic and less sickly sweet (as in book 1). Even though the actual 'supernatural' stuff didn't start until 55-60% into the book, it was bearable to read because the characters' emotional journeys were interesting to follow.
Compared to book 1, the male lead wasn't perfect (far from perfect--actually), and made a more interesting (sorry for overusing this word) character. This made me curious, what did the author find so special about him that she made him into a main character? Why did the MC go for him?
Also, we got to see the evolution of the female lead (MC), in a much more dramatic way than in book 1. It had a greater effect, therefore giving the story a greater impact.
Now, I'd like to discuss the writing. I thought that the dialogue was well done, and I did see improvement in other areas when comparing to book 1 and 2, but there are still some issues. The author does too much exposition and explaining in the beginning about the MC. (She used--I think it was chapter 3-- as the excerpt at the end of book 2). From that, we jumped right into the story, and it gave enough details through DIALOGUE and ACTION that we understood the characters of the two leads. Most of that exposition was unnecessary. The fact that the author used that chapter as the excerpt instead of chapter 1, tells me that the author knows on some subconscious level that the first 2 chapters are kind of boring. My advice to the author is to listen to your gut feelings. We readers are smart, we can figure stuff out. In fact, we like doing some of the work. You don't need to explain everything to us. Leave some mystery for us. When you overdo it on the explaining, I feel like you're insulting my intelligence. There is a high chance that since I picked up your book, I LIKE to read. This leads to a high probability that I probably read A LOT. A must have picked up a thing or two along the way, I think I can keep up. So, please don't try to explain EVERYTHING to me. When you're explaining character traits etc... you've stopped the story for me. It is hanging there on 'PAUSE' while I'm waiting for explanation to end, meaning that the story is NOT MOVING.
I'm done. I'm sorry if this review isn't helpful to some people.
I can't lie to you: I am IN LOVE with this series. Kimberly Montague gave us Evie and Dev in the first two books and now we have Brodie and Risa. Brodie and his flippant, devil may care attitude and Risa and her sarcasm and issues.
I think one of the biggest things I like about this series is that the romances and characters are fully developed before the outbreak hits. This isn't a series about an outbreak with a little romance. It's about romance that happens to blossom right before an outbreak happens. These characters are given something to live for and they fight for it. They aren't willing to give in and let a pesky little zombification infection slow them down. Oh, no. They love each other and they're willing to fight their way past maddened, flesh eating infecteds to be together.
Let's talk about these characters for a minute. Brodie is fabulous. He's flawed. He has a reputation. He likes the ladies for short term, no strings attached affairs and he has no plans to change his ways. Risa intrigues him. She's sarcastic and she doesn't want to be his flavor of the week. So, she snipes. Her stubbornness at trying to hold him at arm's length is what holds his attention. The closer she gets to him, the more layers she sees. I really, really, really loved these two together. They both have issues they need to work through and they complement each other so well that it's hard NOT to imagine them together.
As Brodie and Risa are starting to forge a connection, the Setenid Blight outbreak is marching across the country. When it hits Albuquerque, it hits hard. Brodie and Risa and their assorted friends and family are thrown in the middle of something they really don't understand. They have no choice but to fight, so they do. It's chilling and heartbreaking and I loved every second of it. I am just... smitten by everything Kimberly Montague has thrown at us so far. I want to know about ALL the different outbreaks now.
And by all things small and furry, I hope, hope, hope that we see more of Brodie and Risa in the future!
"The screams had become like white noise in the periphery of my brain, but the explosions still rattled me..."
I. Just. Love. This. Series.
Again, why did I wait so long to read this?! *sigh* Once I started reading, I could not stop. It is amazing.
I was a bit hesitant to read this since it's a spin-off of the original Setenid Blight story which features Dev & Evie and is based in California. Well, let me just say that this just as good as the others!! The perfect spin-off!
The Setenid Blight infection has made it's way to Albuquerque, leaving in its wake nothing but death & destruction. Again, we have conspiracies, infections, action, cover-ups, suspense, and finally, romance. Ohmygosh. I just love the ROMANCE, and that it is such a huge part of the book. How it just so happens to occur in the mist of a national pandemic, and that the relationship between the characters was already established before the outbreak. I fell in love with the characters and their stories. You can't help it. Feel what they feel, they're real.
"I know you don't trust me yet, and that's okay. But you can trust me with your life."
Brodie & Risa are excellent characters, they aren't perfect and have their own issues. I liked that they didn't immediately jump into anything, that their story developed at a steady pace. The secondary characters were also great, I loved them all to be honest. Well, except a few. They're willing to go to extremes to keep each other safe, all of them. Their character traits are admirable.
"Fight all you want, sunshine. I can't let go of you."
Hands down one of my favorite series ever. The best thing about this book? It is completely different. I thought there would be a lot of similarities between this one and the last, but no. New plot, new characters , and brand new situations. Love it.
This book was awesome and of course it would be! I was hooked from page one and I was unable to put it down! I read it everywhere I went! It was amazing, steamy, romantic, sad, exiting and thrilling. It was really fun to read about Risa and Brodie. They were only mentioned in book 1 &2 so it was great that they got their own story. They have a different experience with the virus Setenid blight then Evie and Devlin had and that was so interesting. It made it a totally different story.
And the love story between these two is just as amazing! I just can´t get over how good Montague writes! I was so involved with the story that I felt kind out of it when it ended. Like I was still inside that book even though I had stopped reading. I had to take a break from reading when I finished this one so I could pull myself out of that world. Yaeh that happens to me sometimes when I really love a book!
I am so exiting there will be more books about Risa and Brodie as well as about Evie and Devlin! This book also ended with a cliff-hanger that made me want to through something cause I didn´t want the story to end! You just have to read this story because it is so awesome! You wont be able to put this book down I promise!
Okay, I fell in LOVE with Dev and Evie and the 'infection' in The Setenid Blight Series! I was a little skeptical about a spin-off as any fan would be. However, this book gave me everything I loved about the original series and so much more! A closer look into the infection itself, the god-awful quarantine, what it would feel like to NOT be 'in the know' when all hell suddenly breaks loose, and... young crazy love! Kimberly Montague just continues to take me to new places of reader ecstasy! This is a read that you do NOT want to miss! For the record, I normally shy away from gory violence or anything that can even remotely remind me of a zombie-type apocalypse. That all scares the s*** out of me! I cannot even watch my 10 yr old play his x-box games. However, all of that is so completely essential to the story line, and not at ALL overdone or overplayed! Even a squimish girl like me could appreciate the realism in this tale. I consider it less fiction and more possible. It's THAT close to the COULD be... but in a way that has never been told before!
I read this as a stand-alone novel and if the two books Ive read of Kimberly are anything to go by, Ive found my ideal guys. Amazing but not perfect. Human.
Keep up the good work. My only complaint was with the ending. It seemed way to abrupt, for a second there I thought i was missing pages or something. If you were going for a cliff-hanger deal I would have really appreciated if you could have added that in the end, like a short note or so.
