Shadows #1

Insight

Rate this book
Micah hates her ability to “see” things when she touches people. She’s terrified of relationships, holds on to guilt over the death of her classmate, Lacey, and has no idea what to do with a vision from Landon, a boy from her school. She feels him falling for her, but Micah doesn’t do friends, much less relationships.

Enter a spooky history project about a tragedy from three hundred years ago, and voodoo dolls that Micah somehow feels has to do with her gift. Suddenly she’s sure the shadows in the woods are following her every move—without Landon’s relaxed attitude about what’s happening in her life, Micah would be sure she’s going crazy.

With no ideas on timing or specifics, the visions of both herself and the people she cares about are turning dark—and it appears the shadows around her house do move on their own. But as Micah and Landon try to prevent Micah’s visions of the future, the shadows close in, and they’re now afraid they’ve become the cause…

Micah's story is the first of three girls, with unique talents, who are part of a 300 year old tragedy that follows them in the shadows.

Having heard such great things about Jolene Perry's books I jumped at the chance to read one of them. Although it's funny that it's the cover for book 2 that initially attracted me to it. While this one is nice, the sequel's cover is so pretteh! As for the book, overall I thought it was a pretty fun read, though some aspects of it definitely stopped me from loving it.

The most prominent of these aspects is the forced nature, or stiffness, from the characters and events. It's hard to even pinpoint examples as it was mostly a feeling that I got throughout the book in regards to the characters' reactions, dialogue, as well as the flow of the story. Some of it seemed artificial to me, to either push a point, or insure certain plot developments. Nevertheless, the book kept my interest, even to the point of having me reflect on her situation hours afterwards--what it would be like to see visions every time you touch someone, not knowing if it's the past or present, or if you could potentially save someone's life. What would I do with these visions? Although not the first time I come across a similar premise, I had fun with it and it was well executed for the most part. We did get some hints on the cause of her ability, where it came from and why she has it, but it didn't go very deep in that area. This novel seemed to have been mostly about Micah coming to terms with her situation and being around people. Learning more about what she can and can't change as well as opening up about it. The sequel will hopefully go into more details about the legend we're introduced to, including the creepy shadows she's sensing in the woods.

The romance is one part that I did enjoy regardless of the lack of truly deep emotional output, which is surprising, considering. I thought it was a realistic portrayal of a teenage romance with the expected amount of mistrust and skepticism, but also wanting to jump all in. The love interest, Landon, is a sweet guy, however I was not convinced of his turning from player to perfectly loyal boyfriend in such a short time. All in all there could have been some improvement in character development and growth towards not just Landon, but Micah as well. Neither are unlikeable, but they aren't especially memorable either.

Even though it was a little stilted, the book is interesting and I was told that the sequel is worlds better, which is always encouraging when you didn't completely love the first installment. Knowing this, I will most likely be continuing with the series and hopefully find the flow more natural in books to come.

Urban fantasy and have a nice romance in it😍😍😍😍 It's well written as well so it's a great book for me to read, I really do have my fun reading this. and because the whole story is well detailed and doesn't have unnecessary childish drama. Bravo. Do you know how hard it is to read or get a urban fantasy novel these days with romance in it🙄🙄 It is so hard to find a good one that is well written. These days there's so many unnecessary childish drama in urban fantasy novels so it made the story so much boring and even annoying... BUT NOT THIS ONE. THIS story right here is a good one if you want to read it. It will not bored you for sure. Like i said, I have a fun time reading this novel. It made my day....

The heroine have this SPECIAL ABILITY that when she touch someone or someone touch her even just the slightest, she can see what's happening to them or what's going to happen. It depends and sometimes confusing visions. She can't even understand why and can't even control her emotions when she see something. She's very young so I understand when she still feel soooo confused about her abilities. One day she moved to a new town and this one guy, this guy named landon. He really made a move on her and even shows up to her place every other day since she move to her new place in town. He pays attention to her because he said she was different than any girl he ever met in his life. And then he start to likes her so much more than her and even obsessed with her. I love the way the heroine never pay attention to the hero and always ignores him because she thought he was bad news and she wasn't really into him like his into her. But day by day, weeks goes by she start to like him too and tell him about her abilities. The hero takes it weird at first but then understand and started fascinating about the heroine's abilities and knows she is special to him. Their love story on how they met and everything goes by, it's romantic and cute🥺

There are some of the hero's friends doesn't like the heroine because on how the hero always defends the heroine, always talking to her, but they didn't cause any crazy drama with the heroine or between the heroine and the hero. So that was good.

At first the hero didn't like the heroine immediately though. At first he goes to dates with two chicks and even let some of his friends who is a girl kissed his cheek. The heroine obviously 100% at first don't care about any of that because she doesn't like him the way he did to her. So the heroine doesn't get jealous when any of those stuff happens in front of her eyes. The hero doesn't have girlfriends, he was just playing and never ever have sx with those girls.

But then of course the hero only focus and just going out with the heroine when they made it official. And after that, they're main focus is on what the heroine could do and finding out the mysterious things about the heroine's power. The hero really helped her so much and always make sure she's in good hands.

‼️‼️‼️TRIGGER: Car accident, crying, depression, violence, mysterious, little bullying, death and alcohol.

‼️‼️‼️NO CHEATING

‼️‼️‼️IT HAS SEPARATION for a week but both are loyal and never go to anyone else.

‼️‼️‼️NOT LOVE IN FIRST SIGHT. It's more like electricity touch when they first touch each other hands.

‼️‼️‼️NO DRAMA WITH OM. ONLY WITH OW But not too annoying like i said above and other drama is about other mysterious things.

‼️‼️‼️Both are still in high school, both are seniors snd go to the same class. Both are totally single when they meet for the first time.

‼️‼️‼️BOTH ARE VIRGINS. but they didn't have s*x in this book which is sucks😂😂😂 Both said of course they would do it but soon, not now but soon. Not even fingered or any s3xual touch like that. They only kissed, hug, slept and the heroine sitting on his lap. Just that. The heroine didn't say she felt a hard on or something like that either. So it sucks. But because the whole mysterious thrilling things are exciting for me, I didn't get annoyed about that stuff😂😂 hopefully I will read that in the second book😛😛😛

‼️‼️‼️THE HERO is possessive (but not over the top), very protective, nice guy, obsessed and wants the heroine so badly and never afraid to say that to her everyday if he wants to.

"“I’m totally falling for you.” He stops and stares. My heart immediately starts racing. “You’re—” I whisper. I believe him. I know it because I’ve felt it. I’ve felt it from him."

When the hero and heroine first kissed, the hero immediately made it official. He start to touch her publicly around school, classes and even to parties. When people ask, he doesn't hesitate to answer the questions about them.

"Landon grabs me and kisses me, mouth wide open. It’s something I’d expect from Josh, but I love the attention anyway. “Okay.” I shove him away, but I’m immediately sorry knowing we’ll have to make contact again. “So this.” Josh points between us, an eyebrow cocked. “Going on long?” “A while.” Landon squeezes my hand."

Idk but for me that's cool of him to do that🥺🥺🥺

‼️‼️‼️NO TALKING ABOUT PAST PARTNERS.

‼️‼️‼️THE HEROINE is a smart one, she get scares a lot but she manage pretty well. I love the way she doesn't really care about stupid things and always be honest with everyone😂

‼️‼️‼️THE CHEMISTRY between these two is romantic and cute and hot too. Not too hot but hot enough😛

‼️‼️‼️SAFE ROMANCE

‼️‼️‼️The down side of the book, it ends with a cliffhanger.

👉🏽👉🏽👉🏽Thank you so much for reading my review❤️❤️ For you who loves my review and follow it, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I did not get paid or be told to do a review on a book. I’m here just to write review about a book so i can remember it. Its my honest opinion😚 I didn’t know at first people will find me and follow me and trust me to be honest, I was surprised myself to look at the notifications from people who reach out to me😆 So everything i write down here on a review is based on my personal opinion and based on my true writing. I DID NOT COPY SOMEONE’S REVIEW OR WRITING SKILL because at first when i was using this app for one year i didn’t know how to scroll down on a book and see the reviews from others😂😅🤣 I know, silly me but hey I finally learned my lesson 😛😛😛 Thats why when people assume i copy someone’s review i was like what? Because at first i didn’t know how to use this app properly and i didn’t know how to open someone’s review because for a year i never follow someone or add friends or someone😂😂😂🤣 (I’m laughing so hard) 🤪 AND I NEVER COPY SOMEONE’S REVIEW EVER. IF I WRITE SOMETHING WRONG OR DOESN’T MAKE SENSE PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND BE NICE OKAY. 👈🏽👈🏽👈🏽✋🏽✋🏽

I have a disclaimer down bellow if you have negative thoughts about my review😙😙😙

🌐🌐🌐➡️↘️⬇️➡️This is my own personal thoughts and opinion about the book so if thats not sit right with you or you feel I’m not being fair blablabla, please know that everybody in this world have their own different things that they like and don’t like. It may not be the same thing with you but thats okay because i am my own person and you cannot control me or tell me what to do. For example; i put ketchup (tomato sauce) on my fried chicken. You think that’s disgusting? For me its not and i’ve been eating it like that for many many years. You tell me to put another sauce and see if i like that better? I already did many many times in years but i still like the way i like it. It’s called differences between me and you and billions people in this world😊 be open minded😙 I respect people’s opinions about my opinions but in the end of the day if i say I don’t like it or i do like it, its up to me and its on me. And in the end of the day i always liked and show my respect to books and people’s opinions on books whenever that book is good or not good in my opinion 😊 Respect people’s opinions guys😙😙 I don’t want to write this down because its not really my thing to do it. To like address something like this when obviously i know the people who’s been reading my reviews many times and all the time, they are smart enough to understand and respect other people’s opinions no matter what their opinions on book or their point of view 😙😙 am i right? 💕 also there are people even though i already write “this book is different because i have my own taste of book” those people still comment my taste is this and that when HELLO… everybody have their own thoughts on books and what they want to read… why i read it then? I read it and give it a review because i have to read a book to give it a review… why not read the description book to understand before I’m going to read it? Hello just in case you haven’t notice, description books can be tricky because they write this amazing things about a book but turns out the story is so toxic. Maybe for me its toxic but not for you? YES HELLO THATS WHY US HUMAN BEING HAVE OUR DIFFERENCES, WHAT I LIKE IT DOESN’T MEAN YOU WILL LIKE IT AND EITHER WAY TOO. why i still write the review then if i just don’t like a book? Because I CAN and i want to, you cannot tell me what to do and not what to do🤪 if you still wants to be negative and be karens about my review on book after all of what i just write, i will never acknowledge you and simply ignore you because its not that hard🙏 I won’t respond to negativity comments🙏🏼🙏🏼 DON’T ASK ME AGAIN ABOUT WHY NOT RESPONDING TO YOUR NEGATIVE COMMENTS BECAUSE I ALREADY SAY IT HERE AND I WON’T BE EXPLAINING AGAIN BECAUSE WE’RE NOT CHILDREN SO ITS NOT HARD FOR YOU AN ADULT TO UNDERSTAND😌😌 YES MY REVIEW IS LONG BUT YOU READ IT ANYWAY AND ITS FINE ACTUALLY I CAN WRITE AS LONG AS I LIKE😎 YES MY GRAMMAR IS BAD SOMETIMES AND MAYBE ALL THE TIME BUT LUCKILY MANY PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT I’M SAYING🤪 ⬅️↖️↕️⬅️↩️⤴️

First I have to say that Jolene Perry is BRILLIANT! I absolutely loved Insight. It is the first story in the trilogy and I have to say that I have never ever read a book that has gripped me so much that I was yelling at the kindle and having a conversation with myself. The world created by Jolene is one where things are not always as they seem and people or things are lurking in the background and causing disturbances. Can you imagine when you touch people you can see any part of their life. You can see glimpses of their past, present, and future. You don't mean to but when you touch them that is what happens. So you spend your life avoiding people and situations that would cause you to touch people and get close to them.

This is what Micah has to endure every day. She stays away from people and refuses to have relationships because if she does she would have to touch them and she would feel their pain and sorrow and she does not want that. She wants to live a somewhat normal life but she knows that she can;t with the gift she has. As it is she still feels guilt over the death of her classmate Lacey. But one day things change for Micah. Micah has these visions involving another one of her classmates Landon. When she touches him she feels safe and secure with him and she sees that there is goodness and protection in him.

Landon is kind of the bad boy next door and has a reputation with the girls but he sees something in Micah that captures his heart and he has to be with her. The only thing is is that Landon knows Micah does not trust anyone nor does she hang with anyone so how can they become a couple when she keeps herself isolated? Then to make matters worse they have a history project to research a tragedy that happened 300 years ago and as they unravel it they find that some things go bump in the night. Will Landon help or hurt Micah?

Occasionally, I stumble across a book that I have so many good things to say about, I can't get the right words out. This is one of those books.

It's different from Jolene's usual style, and yet somehow still so uniquely her.

Micah is a fantastic character, living her life trying to avoid touching anyone around her because of her visions - but then she meets Landon. I didn't fall for him quite as fast as Micah did, but by the end, I was completely smitten.

The creep factor is quite high, not only because of the visions, but because of the "shadows" - and I'm not gonna lie, thinking about it kept me awake! Yeah, I'm a wuss!

See how I ramble? I cannot praise Insight enough - stop reading my rambles and buy it right now! :D

Thanks to Goodreads First Reads and Jolene Perry for a copy of Insight.

This book is written from Micah's first person point of view. She sees things whenever she touches someone. Or merely bumps into someone. It could be a past event, a future event, or an event in the present. And it obviously troubles high school senior Micah. Not only does she have to cope with her visions, but moving to a new school at her and her mom's new place means plenty more people and more visions to try to avoid. When she catches the eye of Landon, the Senator's son, along with the ire of Landon's many wannabe girlfriends, it's almost too much for Micah to bear. Will she be able to hold it together long enough to get through high school?

This book was a quick and quite enjoyable read. I loved how the author really let us see the world from Micah's point of view. She went through everything a normal, troubled high school girl would go through. It didn't feel forced, just natural for her and the reader. Micah's name? OK, I struggled with the voice in my head about how to pronounce Micah. Mick-ah? Mee-kah? The author must have heard my struggle because she answered my question in the first third of the book. It's Micah, like Michael. Duh. :)

I'm not a true fan of romance-type books, but I loved the interactions with Landon and Micah. It took a while for me to warm up to Landon, but I ended up liking him and rooting for them both as a couple. Some mysterious, paranormal "shadows" that tie into a school project kept me guessing throughout. Landon's dad also has some mystery behind him. I hope these things get written about more in the next two books in the series.

Micah gets flashes when she touches people. They can be past, present, or future. A very short yet usually intense glimpse into a major event that she both sees and feels. This has caused her to shy away from people and hate to make any contact. She has never told anyone about it. When she touches Landon, she sees herself, and feels his like and happiness. Her mom and dad are both moving on and have new love interests. Can Micah over overcome her fear and get close to someone?

I was so sad for Micah because she was missing out on so many opportunities for friendship and love. I also felt bad for the people she would avoid and push away just because she doesn't want to feel what their feeling. I guess I can understand as someone who doesn't even want to read depressing books! LOL But when she first meets Steven, a really sweet guy whose dad is abusing him she doesn't even comfort him because she doesn't want to feel his fear. I loved Steven but was happy the love triangle building was nipped in the bud pretty quick. As soon as she touches Landon and feels that he likes her, Micah's attention is solely focused on him. Her gift gave her the power to trust him. She sees that they will be together so she opens herself up to him. I loved seeing her little flashes. It allowed me to see how things might not be what they seem but also how they might be helpful or upsetting.

Landon was a nice guy but he has a reputation of a player. I was a bit skeptical of how quick he changed and it took me awhile to feel for him. He just had a bit of a too perfect and kind of plain personality. It was great that he accepted Micah's ability so easily...well after a little bit a proof. I could understand his frustration in Micah knowing what their future held when he didn't. That would really bug me. I know I would be demanding that she tell me everything she saw about me. Also at times when Micah saw things that she would blame him for he was really persistent and strong in his feelings to let her know he hasn't done anything and maybe she should look again. He helped her become comfortable with her gift which she always saw as a curse.

Micah hid her abilities for so long and it became a problem when she started getting flashes that may lead to disaster. The whole aspect of seeing the future and whether you really have the power to change it. Sometimes she wouldn't be sure if what she saw was past or future or if her trying to change the events was the cause in the first place. If you see someone getting in a car accident and try to call them to warn them, will that stop it? Or will them answering their phone while driving end up causing what you saw all along? I always find those plots fascinating. There was another side plot that I wished was developed more but I guess it will be in the next book. Micah and Landon were studying mythology, a specific story about shadows going after people with abilities. Micah saw shadows in the trees where she lives and Landon's dad always popped up really randomly and suspiciously but it was never explored any further in this book. Looking forward to seeing where that goes next!

"Knowing what he feels, knowing he wants this as much as I do, give me the need to have him closer. It feels like I'll never be tired of his lips on mine. Why did I ever fight against this?"

"And for the first time ever, I'm grateful for my gift. For the first time I see it as a gift. I would have never attempted talking to him if I hadn't seen what I aw the first day we touched."

He climbs over the back of his couch and grabs me into a hug.
Us dancing. His hands slide across the blue silk. Love. Contentment.
Wow. Prom. It sort of got lost in the shuffle.
"Gonna tell me? Or are you still on the no-telling policy." He raises a brow.
"Never going to be on the no-telling policy again. You're taking me to Prom" I smile.
"Well, I guess that's the easy way to ask." He laughs.

"I can't believe you're choosing to be a part of this." This horrible thing I do.
"I'm choosing to be a part of you."

It's Micha's senior year and she and her mom have moved because of a job opportunity her mom couldn't turn down. This would be a huge deal for most teenagers, but not for Micah. Micha's always been a loner. She works really hard at blending in and not drawing attention to herself, not because she wants to, but because she has to, because she needs to, in order to keep her sanity. Micha sees things. When she bumps into someone or touches someone, she has a vision, a flash or picture of something significant that has or is going to happen in that person's life. She has been able to do this ever since she can remember, and it is a secret that she has born alone.

Now she's the "new girl" again, which unfortunately causes more attention to be focused on her than normal. She ends up in a study group with one of the cutest boys she has ever seen, Landon, not that it matters or anything. I mean, it is not like she can have a boyfriend because of the whole touching and visions thing, and besides, it's obvious Landon is player. Needless to say when she ends up coming into contact with Landon and sees herself through his eyes, things start to get really interesting in Micha's life. She soon finds out that there is a lot more to Landon that meets the eye. Then there is the creepy history project they are working on which involves the Bahamas, voodoo, people with talents, and weird shadows, which bothers Micha a whole lot more than it should.

When Micha's mom starts dating the principal of her school, who just so happens to be Landon's uncle, they soon find themselves moving into a small house on Senator Michaels' estate, her mom taking on the job of managing the property. Micha's not thrilled about it, but at least she has access to the ocean. After Micah confesses to Landon about her gift of "insight," they find themselves growing a lot closer, even though Landon's dad, the Senator, kind of creeps her out. Things get even worse when she thinks she sees shadows moving in the woods around her house. With Landon's help, Micha is able to understand her visions a little better, but when she has to confess to him a secret she has been keeping about the death of someone he loved, things seem to fall apart for them. Little do they know that this is only the beginning of something so much bigger than they realize, something that is very dangerous.

I really enjoyed Insight. Jolene Perry's writing captured my attention from the beginning and held it throughout the entire book. The story line was great, and the whole paranormal aspect was very intriguing and mysterious. I loved the way the author combined the romance aspect in with the unique paranormal perspective, blending the two together seamlessly, giving this novel the feel of a paranormal and contemporary romance mix, that also has that mystery/thriller vibe to it. I really liked Micha and Landon. I like watching their relationship and trust grow. They both had plenty of "issues," and they both messed up pretty bad a time or two, which made them seem more like real people. Landon is really hot to, which is always a plus. Micha had her attitudes, but they were more a self-preservation mode she adapted to cope with things, though she wasn't afraid to speak her mind if needed. I liked Micha's mom a lot to. The book ended really well, leaving you wanting more, but not hanging off a cliff by your fingertips. Overall, I really enjoyed Insight and found it to be really entertaining. If you are a paranormal romance fan, then you should definitely check this series out.

Insight is the first book in the Shadows series and what a start it was!

Before picking up Insight, I had never read a book by Jolene Perry. Many of my friends had recommended her work, though, so when I saw openings for a blog tour, I immediately signed up. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I'm glad I did. Even with the few issues I had with the story here and there, I was surprised by how much I truly enjoyed reading the novel. It was very hard to put it down once I started!

Micah is psychic. She has the ability to see glimpses of someone's life when she touches them. She's had the ability her whole life, but hasn't told anyone, not even her beloved mother. Micah doesn't have many friends when she moves to a new town with her mother, but soon is introduce to new people, including Landon and his posse. When one of her peers dies, and Micah realizes she could've stopped it, she harbors a serious guilt that keeps her from giving Landon her whole heart. For their relationship to work out, Micah must be honest with him about everything, including her power. But the shadows of an ancient tragedy are getting closer and the first thing on on the couples' minds is how to survive the many obstacles ahead.

Micah and Landon were great main characters, and there actions seemed very realistic for the situations they were in and the way they had grown up. The author does well in making these characters relatable. As separate people, there were several times where I found myself annoyed with them, but together, they captured my heart quickly. I loved reading as their relationship bloomed. They really are a sweet couple.

Micah's unconditional love for her mother was endearing, if a bit creepy at times. Her mom was a good minor character. Her love for Micah was obvious as well. Reading about a main character with caring parents was fantastic! We don't see many of those around anymore in young adult novels. Landon made me sa-wooooon. He's a great male lead, though it hurt my heart a bit when he wasn't with Micah. I would love to see into his past more, and learn more about his dad and what his dad does in the background. I hope in a future novel (or novella) we get that glimpse!

This book will tug at your heartstrings at some points! And by the end, you will think of the characters as people you know and care about. While it wasn't the best thing I've ever read, it was a really good story that I'm glad I took the time to read.

My main issue with Insight was the cliche, and sometimes awkward, writing. Now don't get me wrong, it wasn't the entire book that was a hot mess, but there were several parts that had me rolling my eyes or giggling because it sounded so ridiculous.

Insight was a great story that grabbed my interest enough to make me want to continue the series! Though the books focus on separate couples, I really hope that there will be parts where the readers get to see Micah and Landon again. Their future together is one that I am interested in seeing!

I received an e-copy of this novel from the author for my honest opinion and review.

I received Insight as part of the tour hosted by YA Bound in return for an honest review. Micah isn't your typical teenage girl who’s about to graduate from high school. She’s gifted with the ability to see bits and pieces from their lives as well as how they feel when she touches people. Since she doesn't want to see visions so has in the past attempted to appear invisible, however when her mom moves them to a small town blending in won’t be so easy. It’s at school where she meets Landon the son of the senator who has girls hanging all over him. When she accidentally bumps into him she gains a vision of Landon falling in love with her but that’s not the only bump she’s gotten since starting school. She’s also sees the death of a classmate that continues to haunt her because she wonders if she could have saved her.

Micah has thought she was alone until she tells her dad about being able to see things by touching people. She learns that her father also has the gift to see things he explains to her about learning to how he met her mom, how he knew it was over before it was really over. Micah learns that her father is in love with plans to marry her but he’s seen something dark in her future. With Micah seeing the same scene when she touches his dad’s fiancé she tries to help figure out what’s going to happen to her. With her help he’s able to figure it out to do what he can to avoid anything happening to her.

Micah returns home to her mom charged with the info that she may be able to change her visions to fix them before something bad happens. Upon returning from her dad’s she is visited by Landon who attempt to get to know her better, which is something in the past she would avoid. As their relationship progresses she develops enough trust in him to tell him her secret about how she can see bits and pieces when she touches people. At first he enjoys pushing her into people but after she touches him and sees something everything changes. As Micah attempts to change the future the shadows are looming will she be able to change the future or will she be too late.

Insight is a captivating story filled with intrigue romance and mystery. I love Micah she’s so down to earth, she’s trying to deal with her ability and not let it ruin her life. Then she meets Landon he’s the opposite of her and he changes her life forever. I love the relationship between Micah and Landon it’s sweet innocent young love he’s willing to do anything to protect her and what kind of girl doesn't want a guy like that. As a character Micah is very well written she’s one of those characters you just connect with so that when she’s happy your happy and same when she’s sad. I found the concept for Insight unique it’s the first book I've read with a character that feels and sees things by touching a person. It’s a fascinating story that keeps you on your toes cheering for Micah and Landon till the very end. I really enjoyed Insight and look forward to reading the next books in the series.

Micah has the ability to see and feel things with a touch. It is an ability that she hates but she cannot control what she does. She has no hold whether what she shes is a past or future incident which makes it even worse for Micah. This is the reason why she wants to be left alone - until Landon.

Insight is a story focused on Micah and Landon on how they discover each others weakness and strength together. Micah is your typical teenager with a special gift. It sucks the life out of her and she hates every time it happens. She has nobody to talk to about her ability. For a female lead, she is definitely mature and tough. Her ability harden her to the point of seclusion from her peers. I actually felt sad with how Micah's life has turn because of her ability. She doesn't consider it a gift, rather it is a curse that is destroying her life one touch at a time. Landon on the other hand is written like your typical playboy - good looking, flirty, arrogant and rich. Landon is not all that however, deep within lies the sadness that nobody knows until Micah came into his life. The relationship between Micah and Landon was great. They have great chemistry and they are a good couple, each complementing the other in different ways. You'll see the development of their characters as the story unfolds and I love how they connected without it being instant.

The focus of the book is Micah's ability and the lack of information as to what it is. Micah has no knowledge of what she can do or how she ended up doing it which blindsides her of everything regarding her gift. Together with Landon, they will try to uncover the truth behind her ability and try to escape a group that is out to get them.

This is the first in a series and an unbelievable first. The plot is definitely interesting and I enjoy how  Perry wrote it in "completeness" without giving everything to the readers. Until the last page, it'll leave you guessing on what will happen next. This is what I love about Perry's writing, she will always give you her best in her stories and her style is so easy to read and adapt to. Pacing was never slow and there was never a dull moment in the story. There were no holes as to the character, the story or the ending. The ending was definitely a hooker for Manipulation, the second book, and glad that I have it handy. :)

This is my third book by Perry. I have read Night Sky and then followed by Knee Deep . Two different books and both I enjoyed thoroughly and highly recommend. Night Sky and Knee Deep is so different from Insight but still captures Perry's amazing gift of story telling. Comparing the three will also showcase the flexibility of Perry as a writer unlike some authors.

Did I enjoy this book: I did enjoy this book. I read it every free chance I had. I found Insight to be exciting and different.

I would not want to be Micah. I cannot imagine having to go through what she goes through every time she touches someone. That would be so difficult, especially when she didn't know what she was seeing - whether it was a current event, something from the person's past, or something that was going to occur in the future. Once she figured out what she was seeing, I couldn't imagine having to try to decipher what she should do about it, if anything. She tried to deal with it by being distant and invisible. But that didn't work out so well at her new school.

Landon was a sweet kid who was not your stereotypical rich kid/son of a senator. He seemed to truly care about his friends and the people around him. His interest in Micah was genuine and their love came easily. I liked Landon. He was a great character.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what the visions meant, what the shadows were, and what Micah and Landon were going to do going forward. I couldn't figure out where the story was going, especially once the connection between Micah and Landon took off. Then, the connection to the Bahamian legend became apparent. All-in-all, Insight was a good read.

Would I recommend it: I would recommend this book. It was fast and exciting read.

Will I read it again: I will not.

(As Posted on PenandMuse.com )

I flew through this book - so fast that I barely even marked status updates on Goodreads. Except for when I was sobbing. (I get overly attached to good stories, can you tell?)

Micah’s gift is what first got my attention. I tried to think about it, but I don’t think I’ve read anything featuring a “power” or “gift” that works quite the same way Micah’s does. It’s one thing to see glimpses of premonition when you touch someone – but to not know whether it’s past or future? To not know whether you could change something? Whether you should change something? That’s a lot of weight for anyone, especially a teenage girl.

Landon is THAT boy. You know the one. The one you shouldn’t like, but you do. The one you want to tame, but don’t. That’s Landon. Watching his emotional layers peel off until you get to the guy you knew just had to be underneath is sinfully delightful. Watching him grow and evolve is even more delightful.

I kinda loved Micah and Landon. If you couldn’t tell.

concept of book was great! Enjoyed the book and pretty much read it straight through.
Felt a lot was left unsaid though but I went to Authors website and see there are 2 more coming out that will add to the back story between them. Loved the male character Landon and I could feel how much he loved Micha makes me believe he's more connected to her just like she thinks he is.... Good read :)

MY REVIEW
I was given this book, free of charge by the Author via YA Bound Book Tours in exchange for my honest review.
I like the cover, obviously like the majority of covers it makes more even sense when you have read the book. The female on the cover is the teenaged main character, Micah. Micah is blessed, or as she sometimes thinks cursed with a special ability. The smokiness coming from Micah's eye is to represent that she "sees" things. The image and colours on the cover makes me think of words like, ethereal, mystery, and magical. I think the font of the book title and how it goes down the right hand side of the book is attractive and a little different from the norm, and the authors name neatly placed at the top. The thing that attracts you on the cover is the image, which for me is what should attract you really. The beautiful pale ice blue of the eye attracts your own eye to the cover. The only thing I could fault about the cover is that it doesn't say The shadows Bk #1, but I don't think that is an essential thing that needs changing and I mean where would you put it? Maybe where the authors name is and then put the authors name at the bottom left? I still really like the cover as it is. Would I pick this book from a shelf? Yes, as I really like the image on the cover, and obviously as a fan of Jolene Perry, I would always take a look at a book by her.
So more on to the plot of the book now. What are, and how do Micah's visions work?
The kind of a vision she gets when she touches someone, is like a snapshot, a little more than a glimpse that doesn't last very long, she usually needs to see the visions more than once to make any sense of them. As you can imagine this can get pretty tiresome and scary at times. At times in the book Micah varies between wishing she would never have another vision, to wanting them again, to wishing she could turn the ability on and off and control them in some way. Initially Micah tell's no-one about her gift, she keeps it to herself and tries her best to avoid people as much as she can. Then Micah and her mum move to a new area, where Micah is the "new girl" at school. Everyone wants to say hi and shale her hand or touch her arm, how will she cope? Will she ever find any friends? Will she ever confide in anyone about her "gift"? There are many things that Micah is yet to learn about her ability, for example if the "vision" see's someone getting hurt, can she stop it? Can Micah change the future? Micah also see's shadows in the trees. Shadows that follow her and watch her from the trees. Who or what are the Shadows and can any one else see them? Micah even wonders if she is going slowly crazy when she is given a project at school to do on an old voodoo curse. The curse begins to sound so similar to what is happening to her, but it's just a story! isn't it?
The book is written in the great easy flowing style that I have come to expect from Jolene Perry. This is the second book by her that I have read. This book has both a contemporary YA feel as well as the Paranormal element of the "gift/talent" Jolene Perry reels you slowly in until you are really attached to those main characters. I love the relationship that develops between Micah and the "posh boy" and Senator's son, Landon. Though Landon is "the posh boy with money" and gives off a carefree "don't care" attitude he turns out to be a lovely guy. Will the visions Micah keeps getting from touching or bumping into him come true? Could Micah trust him with her secret? And why does Micah feel like Senator Michael's (Landon's dad) knows something about the Shadows in the trees?
So did I enjoy the book? Yes, really liked it a lot. Would I recommend the book? Yes it's great for those new to or a bit unsure as to whether they would like paranormal too. It would ease "Paranormal Newbies" in easily. Would I read more in The Shadows Series? Yes! I have already started Bk #2 Manipulation Would I ready more by Jolene Perry? I have!, I read Knee Deep, and now I am reading Manipulation!
Should really be a 4'5/5 stars just a hairs breadth from a 5/5

For a YA book, this was pretty interesting.

There were a lot of things going on in the book but it wasn’t difficult to follow. Essentially, this book set up the following two and that was, admittedly, a bit frustrating. Necessary…but frustrating because there was a point where I really just wanted ONE definitive answer in the myriad of questions and mysteries that had been brought up.

The ideas and plot points were well constructed and integrated: The legend of the Voodoo Witch who had relinquished her powers as penance for an accident (or so it seemed), Micah’s gift of insight, the shadows which play into the legend, The Middle Men group and how Landon’s dad fit in with them (we didn’t get much info on them in the first book, just a clue that they exist and there’s something problematic about them), Landon’s part in the legend (or maybe not).

It might seem like a lot of elements, but they all worked relatively well in this first book. However, the true test will be how well they are worked into the subsequent novels so that everything is explained without seeming like over kill.

I liked the originality of the Voodoo Witch legend and am curious to see how that plays out later in the books, whether or not the legend really is as it seems. There’s so much that could be done to develop that particular piece of the plot.

Now, this is a bit odd for me because while I do notice character names, I seldom actually care what they are unless they really don’t fit or they’re ridiculously unusual, however, I really liked the character names in this book. Somehow, they just fit the characters. Micah’s name was particularly unique and I found I really liked how it fit her character so well somehow.

Micah’s insight would be an incredibly frustrating gift because she was able to get “flashes” from people even from the slightest touch without being able to control what was happening. She also, for the most part, wasn’t able to distinguish past, present and future unless there were some obvious clues (which there were in several of her later “flashes”). Once she figured out that she could sometimes discern what might happen, she attempted to change it but it didn’t always work like she’d have liked. There was a consequence, so to speak, for messing with what she’d seen.

The “flash” she caught of her in danger at Lacy’s memorial felt a little rushed when it was dealt with and changed. I honestly thought there should have been more to it but it was quickly resolved for something that had caused her such intense fear. She’d seen the same situation from several different points of view: Steven, Brigitte and Landon all caused Micah to flash on the danger that would occur at the memorial. I just felt for an incident to be mentioned so many times that the actual resolution was anti-climatic.

I was also slightly disappointed at the end. It’s not exactly a cliffhanger but there were so many unanswered questions and I had hoped to have, at least, a few answers. Knowing that this was a trilogy helped because I knew the book wouldn’t have a solid conclusion but I was hoping for a little something anyway.

Regardless, my interest is piqued and I’ll definitely see if the series continues to as interesting as “Insight.”

This book was received from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I have heard so many great things about Jolene Perry, so I was so excited to start this book. It has such an amazing premise, and I adored the cute romance!

Micah can see into someone’s future or past just by touching them. She feels this ability is a burden and a curse, especially when she feels guilty over the death of a classmate. For this reason, she keeps people at an arm’s length and never lets anyone get close to her, save her mother. When she meets Landon, she senses him falling for her, and pushes him away until she can no more. When she finally lets Landon in, she senses she is being watched by shadows in the forest. Together, can Landon and Micah stay safe and prevent the horrific future of a close loved one?

Micah was really hard to like to begin with. I did feel bad for the horrible responsibility that she had to the people whose futures she saw. In order to keep people away, she was cranky and mean to those around her, but I don’t blame her. She really did not have anyone understand the real her her whole life, and I can even being to understand how hard that must be. When she let Landon in, she changed into a completely different person, which was so nice to see. I did enjoy her snarky comments though, and I totally love her name!

Landon was definitely the opposite of Micah, in more than one way. He was charismatic, charming, friendly to everyone around him, and totally gorgeous. But Micah changed him as well. He used to run around with different girls, but Micah transformed him into a devoted, one-woman man. He was so sweet to her and really got her craziness, which was exactly what she needed.

Micah’s mom was pretty much the coolest mom ever. She loved Micah so much and trusted her explicitly. I also loved her dad. Although he wasn’t around much, he was always there for her and understood exactly what she was going through. I feel a little sketchy about Landon’s dad, Senator Michaels. He was way too interested in Micah’s gift. I’m sure we will see him in Manipuation.

The plot was the downfall of this book for me. I thought it built up really well, but I was disappointed by the way it progressed. The way Perry described the shadows and Micah’s paranoia about her gift being discovered, I was expecting a big action scene or climax, but I didn’t find that. Despite this, I found Micah and Landon to be perfect for each other. Micah needed someone to confide in about her gift, and Landon needed someone to ground him. I took a while for Micah to let him in, but once she did, it worked out wonderfully. I loved Landon’s determination to keep Micah safe.

All in all, this was a really enjoyable read, and I am SO looking forward to hearing Addison and Dean’s story.

Favorite Swoon-worthy Quote: My arms pull on him. We need to be closer. I felt his feelings, I trust him. He kisses me again, more certain this time. Our kiss deepens and it’s exciting and exhilarating and my nerves are dancing hoping I’m doing this right. Wanting more. Wishing I could still feel what he feels.

A review copy was provided for an honest review. Insight is enjoyable, entertaining, and an intriguing read. I found myself pulled in instantaneously and really wanted to unravel the mystery behind Micah's gift. Most of the characters were very likeable especially Micah's mom and Landon. Micah is a complex heroine with a unique gift that isolates her from everyone else. She's intelligent, brave, and guarded with a lot of angst. Insight's undertones are a little dark but that's hardly a deterrent as it makes the story all the more gripping. There isn't very much action or conflict aside from the main character's internal emotional issues, and a few small twists, but it is still a very satisfying read that will make you want to get a hold of the next book! Also Landon is a really appealing character - attractive, fun, and wealthy with more to him than just his looks. I can totally see him as Alex Pettyfer and Micah as Britt Robertson.

Micah has always been able to "see" brief images of people's past, present, and future by just touching them. This so-called gift has led her to maintain a life of solitude making her a loner. You'd think that with this ability she might have an advantage but that's far from the case. But when Micah and her mom move to a new town her life gets even more complicated when she bumps into a classmate whose past or future looks grim. However, since she can't tell the difference she lets it be and the next day the girl dies. What makes the situation a thousand times worse is the girl was the best friend of a boy who she may just have a future with as is glimpsed with her ability. Guilt stricken Micah avoids the only person who can save her from herself and a life of isolation. But that's not the only thing on her mind since she was given a school project on a legend that sounds like it could explain her apparent gift--or curse. Now every shadow Micah sees she feels as if its watching her, waiting for something and that freaks her out more than anything.

Jolene Perry's writing is skillfully done and easy to follow. Insight's plot was very interesting, the character's were nicely layered, and it was a great book. There are a couple little surprises that made this book unpredictable and I found that refreshing. I hope to see a continuation of Micah and Landon's story though I know the next book Manipulation (Shadows) is from new character's POV's so I can't wait to see how everything works out. Insight is definitely worth a read as the story and characters will hook you from the beginning!

Review originally posted at Doodle's Book Blog

Not once did I want to put this phenomenal story down. Jolene Perry created a world of mystery and intrigue that kept me reading until I was about to pass out.

Micha has seen pictures, flashes, and small blips of people's lives from touch for as long as she can remember. No one knows. But what happens when she becomes the main focus in a negative way and she starts getting watched by shadows?

I adored Micha. She is such a strong person considering all she's been through with no help form anyone else. Her relationship with her mom, the pictures and feelings she gets from her, has always grounded her. Landon, the son of a senator, has a privileged life, but he isn't snobby or stuck up like one would assume.

Insight was an amazing read. It kept me focused with the unknown and the excitement of some situations. I loved that the characters, or the main characters at least, had depth and a back story that made their choice and actions make sense. It was descriptive and vivid to the point where I was able to get a clear picture of each event that took place.

Overall, Insight left me with one big question that will hopefully be explained by the end of the series, but didn't leave me on the edge of a cliff. If you want a book with a very sweet romance and some paranormal tendencies, you've found your book!

I know I reviewed the sequel of Insight, Manipulation, for the blog tour a couple of weeks ago and I really enjoyed it. However I can't say the same for its predecessor, Insight. I felt that insight was a bit too insta-love and sappy for me. Too much romance too fast which turns me off a book immediately. Obviously I liked it enough to continue reading the series but only because I have faith in Jolene Perry and because the second book is about two new and different characters. This book centers around two teenagers, one a recent high school transfer. She, Micah, can see things when she touches people. She sees something disturbing when she touches Landon which she tries to stay away from but ends up feeling really guilty. Landon takes an interest in her while she wants to stay as far away from him as possible. There is a paranormal mystery in this book that is passed on to book two, however it is not really explored in this book. This is why I enjoyed the second book more. I would definitely recommend you guys reading this one and then picking up the second book, especially paranormal fans.

Great book, it was a bit confusing, with the Shadows, and it wasn't really a "there's a bad guy, we have to stop him" kind of story, just conflict with dealing with her power, and with romantic tension. Yep. Good book!

I just love Perry's writing style. Her words just flow flawlessly, and her characters are amazing...true talent (minus shadows...Lol)
