This was so nostalgic! 😌 I felt transported back to the good ol' days reading this. It's hard to believe it's been more than a decade since I first read this series, but I distinctly remember that Yokozawa and Kirishima owned my brain for a long stretch of time. It was nice rehashing those old feelings again. I'm honestly not sure what made me pick this up again, but I'm glad I did 🥰

This is the best BL novel I've read so far, hands down. Obviously I've read the fan translation, but eternal optimist that I am, I bought a copy of the Japanese version. (Also, I really want to show my support for this kind of story - there needs to be more of this!)

[Edited on 12/26/13: I've read a lot more BL novels by now and as a result this doesn't seem quite so amazing anymore, so I've changed the rating from five to four stars. It's still a fun series, and the best thing related to Junjou Romantica and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, hands down.)

Yokozawa Takafumi no Baai is a tie-in with Nakamura Shungiku's Sekai ichi Hatsukoi series. The main character of the novel is the manga's main antagonist, if you will, but to be honest, I've always liked him. Yokozawa has been in love with his best friend for years, and he's always held out hope that Takano would, one day, feel the same for him. But then Onodera Ritsu shows up and that plan goes down the drain. After he is outright rejected by his best friend, Yokozawa goes out to drown his sorrows in booze, and that's when he meets Kirishima, a single father and a colleague of his. And then the usual stuff happens, except not :) It's not perfect, but it's a fun and sweet romance, and I dare you to read this and not to fall in love with this little family. I will be eternally grateful to the people who translated this for us poor people who're not (yet) able to read Japanese, because this was so very lovely.

Added on July 18, 2013:
Well, would you look at that. I'm keeping my original review because I kept mentioning that I was wondering whether I'd ever be able to read this in the original, and, well, today, about 1 1/2 years after that post, I was.

Having finished this one, I also reached my reading goal for the year, which was to read 50 books/manga in Japanese, five of which had to be light novels. Until now, I've read 58 manga and 5 light novels, so. Go me!

It's still not easy going, exactly (although it's telling which parts of the novels are the most easy to read for me, if you catch my drift..*cough*), but I have to say reading the novels is fun, too. It's both easier and more difficult than reading manga: the grammar, apart from the dialogues, is more straightforward, but the vocab. The vocab. It's not so bad when you read a series with the same character, but when it's a new series with a new environment there are always so many words I still don't know. That can be a bit frustrating. Also, since it's Japanese, I sometimes understand the kanji even I don't know the reading, and that is a bit weird.

In any case, though, I'm proud of myself. Maybe there'll be a day when I won't need to look up any words while reading? Hope springs eternal. じゃあ、私はこれかれもがんばります!

Like many people, i really hated Yokozawa at first because he kept being such a cockblock and always bashing on innocent-ish Ritsu (guilty). Athough, in sekai ichhi i did start to feel for him as the anime went on. That scene where he meets Ritsu in the elevator made my heart ache for yokozawa! :( And that scene where Takano faced him straight on and rejected him in the meeting room...i almost cried. It made me sad that ritsu and takano had eachother but poor yokozawa and sorata had noone. What happened to yokozawa after that bomb drop. Well, the novel starts off with yokozawa drinking himself into oblivion
THEN KIRISHIMA AND HIYORI CAME ALONG!!
i loved him from the get-go! Semes of the yaoi word could learn a thing or two from him ;) These guys are my favorite couple in JR and SIH put together! (sorry Yuu and Shinobu) Hiyori is kirishima daughter from his marriage from his deceased wife. Kirishima is witty, layed back, funny, cocky to the bone yet can be flustered in the eye of his lover, extremely jealous and considerate to not only his daughter but others around him. He shamelessly reads yokozawa the entire way too
unlike the usual big eyes=uke and narrow eyes=seme, they both have narrow seme titled eyes which seems odd but really likable. i always wondered what it would be like if two semes got together (althoough yokozawa is our cute tsun)

Kirishima is really in tune with yokozawa emotions, so much that sometimes it's left yokozawa short of weak retorts.
- Seeing the world from yokozawa's point of view really brought everything into perpective for me. And it filled in the gaps from the anime where he made appearances.

GEEZ i can babble <:) this novel doesnt even need all this persuasion. The yet-to-see movie got me intrested and i was hooked! 3 volumes in one go!
finally, there's no dening this couple will cause fans of other couples to switch in the bat of an eyelash. please check out volume one, you'll thank me. OH and Pressbooks has a great english translation:)

The Yokozawa/Kirishima arc of Sekaiichi no Hatsukoi has got to be the most well-rounded, realistic story I've ever read for a BL story.

A proper review shall be posted one of these days. :)

Yokozawa is officially my favorite character in all Sekaiichi hatsukoi. I loved him since the beginning because he was the type of character that everyone hates at the beginning, I know I'm weird, But the reason that I love him is because this type of character are the one that are very complex, in the anime and even in the manga we can only watch a small part of him but enough to understand that he his very loyal and don't want that his friends get hurt, but at the end He is the only that end very damaged, part of the reason that I love Yokozawa is because I passed for similars situations and make me empathized with him. In this novel is like very very sweet, and funny, because the character of Kirishima is totally the opposite to Yokozawa!! But these HUGE differences are those that make them to complement, the story of Kishirima is sad too, but I think that both find in each other that part that they were nedding.
At the being I have my doubts Kirishima, I must admit, because was that type of boss that figure out like a completly jerk that abused of his power, but at the end you discoverd that is a good guy with good intentions.
The only critic that I have with the Yokozawa no baai is the first message that sends, is very rare that you find a person that blackmailing you, because have good with you. Yokozawa have luck because is a novel, but the people must be very careful with that type of person. Only that!

In SHORT: I LOVED it. And I didn't expect to at all! I thought I might like it, but was super-surprised that I really, really fell in love! And if it weren't for some tropes that are common to the BL - boys love - genre, that I just don't like (and wish they'd just stop using, really!), I'd have given this five stars and celebrated it forever as well.
The translation I read was very well done, but since I believe scanlators usually try to be true to the original, I can only assume that the original is just as well-written. It truly felt life-like, which I adored, really!
Oh, another mini-minus: I didn't like the artwork inside the book too much, because I know that Nakamura Shungiko can draw MUCH more beautiful than the images I saw.

In DETAIL:
THE MAIN CHARACTERS were so well-rounded and interesting. I adored being in Yokozawa's head, because I really like him, even though in the main story, he comes on a bit strong. It was truly wonderful that there was so much about his daily life and what he has to do for work and just a lot of plot that was first and foremost not powered by romance. It is pretty clear to the reader that Kirishima is romantically interested in Yokozawa, but since the latter is rather confused about Kirishima being intent to spend time with him, they start off into an interesting friendship.
Since the POV character is Yokozawa, Kirishima is seen mostly through his eyes, but the reader can see nuances in Kirishima that Yokozawa is not able to pick up.

THE STORY The set up of Yokozawa being heartbroken since he just got dumped is not unique, but it is a great starting point to get insight into him and I loved that. As I already said I loved the daily life and mundane aspect and there was no drama. Some strange situations related to the tropes yes, but nothing over the top and especially nothing that felt to set up to be real.
THE SUPPORTING CHARACTERS were barely there except for Hiyori. And she is such an adorable little girl. It did not feel strange that there weren't too many minor characters apart from her, because of the way the novel was written... and because of Yokozawa's lifestyle. (Oh! Henmi, Yokozawa's co-worker/subordinate was a nice touch, too.)
THE WORLD was not fleshed out much, but I think that is not really a flaw, because I think you are supposed to pick this book up, after reading Nakamura Shungiko's manga series Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, where the reader is introduced to the Marukawa Shoten. And other than that it is set in contemporary Japan.
THE STORY TWISTS were... not there. But I didn't expect them to be and this story didn't need them. There is a surprise moment, I really liked, though. (I knew about it beforehand, but I do not think that it is something you assume. A really nice surprise.)

OVERALL As I said, I really, really loved it and it feels as if I cannot stress this enough since it surprised me so much. I love Nakamura's manga, because while there are tropes I dislike, I feel that she is able to depict emotionally powerful scenes. And while her characters have rather dramatic backstories sometimes or are over dramatic about things, she has the ability to portray relationships and their intricacies really well. The manga are pretty silly at times, so I expected a bit more of that and was utterly glad that the funny parts of this novel didn't really play out like in a manga.(I guess I feared this would be a BL reapeat of my experience with Trinity Blood.) ... Long story short: LOVED IT, will read sequels and do recommend!

3.5

PS: Las partes de Onodera y Takano. Mrd sí es amor csm.

So, Yokozawa gets firmly rejected by Takano in Nakamura Shungiku’s The World’s Greatest First Love – The Case of Ritsu Onodera and goes off to drown his sorrows. He’s spotted by Kirishima, a rather impressive sort, and wakes up the next day with no recollection of the previous night’s events and no clothes on. From there, the push and pull relationship of Marukawa Shoten’s Wild Bear and the silver-tongued EiC of Japun paves the way for the Yokozawa Takafumi no Baai BL novel series.

Other than Kirishima’s “I’m out of condom”‘s deal, I liked the volume. I like That Kirishima is older than Yokozawa, but not by like 15 years. Hiyori is cute and isn’t just aww fodder. I’m glad the volume didn’t end with their relationship up in the air. I really hope that Yokozawa and calm down a bit. He agreed to date Kirishima, so he should act like he did and not act like he’s being put upon all the time. I wonder how many volumes it will take before they tell Hiyori.

Desde que he empezado no he podido parar.

This book was/is amazing. It develops the relationship between the main protagonist and his love interest slowly. It doesn't just jump to the sex scene in the first chapter. No. We see our protagonist Takafumi struggle with his unrequited love and potential love interest. It's sweet because Kirishima (love interest) has a daughter and the dynamic between Takafumi and the daughter just seems so natural.
Takafumi knows how to handle children. He's more of a mother than Kirishima who had to take care of his daughter after his wife's death.
Anyway, the beginning of the book is great too. The way they are introduced is cliche but it's the good kind. :)
Go read it if you are interested in a lighthearted, family kind of yaoi story. And yes, there are enough sex scenes for us to be satisfied.

It's refreshing to read about a mature mlm couple who's also figuring out their feelings for each other. Their love progression is natural and realistic. We also see a different caring side to Yokozawa when he easily befriended Hiyori and showed care & concern towards his cat Sorata. I also love the part when Yokozawa have the opinion that children shouldn't be left to their own devices and that adults should always listen to what children have to say because they deserve attention. That's just so sweet. Kirishima is also quite a loving person. It's unclear whether Kirishima already held feelings for Yokozawa beforehand but from this volume alone, Kirishima was concerned about a fellow person being depressed from having his heart broken and went out of his way to prevent that person from falling even deeper into depression by forcing the person to spend some time with him (Kirishima) so that the person's thoughts won't linger too long on his depression. Which is quite sweet and caring of him. And along the way, Kirishima also realised his feelings for Yokozawa, just Kirishima was more certain about it more quickly than Yokozawa, who was sort of in denial at first. Overall, this story is the best BL novel I've read and I would recommend to not just fans of the original series but also BL lovers in general.

Other than the other Sekaiichi Series, I loved how Yokozawa's character development in this volume. This book really was the adaption of the movie. except for the real ending that was an addition that you would expect in a BL fiction. other the romance part, it was easy to read, and Japanese novels are poetic when they describe a situation, and the scenic workplace in a publisher company was really educative. This novel is not for everyone, but if you have a broken heart, I would reccomend this book if you want to restart your love life.

This book takes up after The Case of Ritsu Onodera Vol. 7, After Takano sets Yokozawa straight on who he loves. Yokozawa ends up getting drunk and Blackmailed by Kirishima. From there Kuroshio ends up dragging Yokozawa out of depression through a series of events.

I’ve got to say I really liked this book. It puts a realistic way on falling in love. Love is never easy and sometimes messy, but these characters make it work.

First loves never last–I knew that from the very beginning.

One confession: I never thought Yokozawa was a bottom.
Thanks to September Scanlation for translating this beautiful book.

Actually, when I found out Yokozawa's case I began to think like: "God, all of the hot guys on this manga are gays," well, that's the point of boys love books. Just guys, without girls :P

I think the first chapter of this book wasn't that good, woke up in the same room with a stranger( well, kind of) and realized that the main chara didn't wear anything under their blanket was too mainstream, did Japanese people often drop by into hotel when they're drunk? Idk. Since Yokozawa wasn't a type of guy who usually panicked with tears, he gave me another feeling when read the first chapter; from boring into excited. C'mon, we all knew from the beginning that Yokozawa was a prideful man so this kind of scene made me excited and Surprisingly, Kirishima was a man who always teased the person he loved. It's cute!

The fact that he was a single-parent surprised me too. I didn't hope too much for their relationship in the future since he had a daughter who will grown up and learned about the facts around her life. She may get along with Yokozawa really well--one more trait of Yokozawa that I never expected--but it's just too weird, gomen Ah, well ... since it's just a fiction, let's not talk about Hiyo's future^^"

So I've watched the OVA for this and read the manga and I loved both. The light novel, however, I'm not so sure. It's super cutesy and way too fluffy for my normal tastes. Maybe it's because in the manga and anime we didn't have to wait so long for scenes between Yokozawa and Kirishima. I don't know...I don't like domestic BL novels much, but I love Yokozawa so I wanted to give this a try. It's not bad...I just found it too fluffy. The teasing things Kirishima does are probably the best part and I feel like I wanted more of THEIR relationship and less of Yokozawa and Hiyori's. Also, Yokozawa is soooo Seme so it's weird to see him so worked up about everything. It made it super rapey and took away from a scene that could have been much hotter...especially after revealing his true feelings. Hopefully the next volume is better, but sadly this wasn't really my cup of tea.
