Lisa thinks she knows everything about her new life. She can deal with the boundaries and even being torn away from her family. But Alex withheld more than she ever expected. Like, what happens when you lose control? How about when you begin to realize just how trapped you are? He leaves out a lot of stuff about himself too. He doesn’t mention the dangers of some of the others—or of what she herself can do…
Christina Leigh Pritchard was born in Plantation, Florida but grew up in the Delray Beach/Boca Raton area. She started writing as soon as she could read and tortured her grandmother with the sound of clanking typewriter keys until her favorite Aunt Carolee gave her a Macintosh computer; a treasured heirloom as it originally belonged to her late grandfather who went out of his way to encourage and inspire Christina's writing. The computer is older than the writer but still works! (These days, it's an XP she creates with, her Aunt Carolee-a great inspiration and encouragement and yes, Grandma Jan gets a migraine if she even thinks about a typewriter!) Oh dear. I didn't enjoy CIN very much, and unfortunately I liked this one even less.
I'm sorry, this was a real struggle to get through. We have different POV in this story, and I felt that it didn't work well. Just too confusing for me.
Well I set out to finish what I could of the C I N series because I said I would. The second book in the C I N series, Traitor was a bit different from the first as far as style goes. The first book is what drew me in so I won't lie it was my favorite even though it didn't feel complete because it was a short story. The second book, even though it was different still wasn't bad. I will be honest and say that the first half of the book was a little hard to get in to for me but the second half of the book made me realize why I was so interested in the first place. The main heroine, Lisa is by far my favorite character in the book. I need to read the series accompaniments 4-6 next to give some insight into this book and really I loved those pieces. They are like sneak peaks. This series is harder to read than most. It will challenge you to go from a normal reading experience to reading almost like flashbacks and glimpses of the present all jumbled up together. Still I enjoy the world that Christina Leigh Pritchard has created. This author is actually quite talented. I also read a book she wrote called Lark's End and was highly amazed. It was a book that combined Alice in Wonderland, Willy Wonka and Chronicles of Narnia type fantasy in a new and fresh tale. I look forward to seeing this author progress and reading more of her work.
Traitor by Christina Leigh Pritchard is the second book in the CIN Series, a YA urban fantasy. This review contains spoilers for book 1, but not book 2.
It has been three years since Lisa was struck by lightning and made immortal. Three years since she's been stuck in Lynn. It hasn't been too bad, though, because she has her boyfriend Alex and her friends. But something inside her is changing, and she fears she's dying. Alex and Ally might know what's wrong, but they are keeping secrets from her.
When I read book one, I wondered what other secrets the weird town of Lynn could possibly have. There were so many mind blowing, bizarre revelations, I wasn't sure if the second book could be as good or interesting. Well, it was. The author came up with more mind-blowing revelations and secrets which add more threads to the tapestry of the town. She did a very good job with it. There was so much complexity, suspense, and mystery to the story. It reminded me very much of the TV show 'Lost.'
There were multiple narrators in this book. The narrators were reliable and trustworthy while you were reading from their perspective. But the characters who weren't narrating were keeping secrets, lying, and manipulating so much that it was difficult to understand which characters were to be trusted. It made for a very interesting story, although I can't say I'd ever like to meet any of those psychos. All the characters had some serious issues.
What I didn't like about the story was how dark or sexual it was. So many of the characters had creepy secrets or were an irritation away from seriously hurting or killing someone. So many of them were cheating on each other or had in the past. The characters never had sex "on screen" in the book, but they came pretty darn close, which I skimmed over because I'm not comfortable with reading it.
I enjoyed this book for how creative and complex the mystery and plot were even though I disliked parts of it.
I received a complementary copy of this book from NetGalley. All opinions are my own, and I received no compensation for writing them.
Traitor is a very intriguing and mysterious read; full of questions and twists along the way. It was still a great story adding the mystery of Alex and Ally and the history behind their immortality. The meaning of C I N is revealed, but is it the truth or a lie?
Again this revolves around Lisa, Ally and Alex, but with the introduction of a bunch of new characters that only adds to the evolving twists and turns of their lives. Since Lisa was changed, she and Alex are starting to get on each other’s nerves. They are arguing, fighting and are having second thoughts. With each argument, emotions get intense causing weather anomalies with major destruction. Lisa is feeling guilty and really trying to control herself. After one particularly bad fight, Lisa goes into the garden and is approached by a couple that appear to be like Lisa.
Lisa is kidnapped and held in a cell with a strange woman that claims she is the beginning of all like Lisa. While Lisa is captive she listens to this woman and her stories. Lisa tries to work everything out; the puzzle pieces are there, but they just won’t fit together.
Is this secret cult real or was the beginning misleading her? Why is Alex keeping so many secrets if he truly loves her? Who is this other girl that was a part of Alex’s life? What is happening to Lisa and her abilities? Is she turning to the dark side? What is happening to Ally, why is her hair losing its colour?
There are so many elements to this particular instalment and it took me a while to work out what to write in my review. There is a lot of backstory about a society and the discovery of the other beings like Lisa. Secrets are hidden, but if revealed could save them all. I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first, but it was still a good read with intriguing and mysterious qualities. I am looking forward to reading book 3 and finding out what is in store for Lisa and Alex next.
If you read my review of the first book in this series, C I N, you would know that while I enjoyed it, it wasn't amazing, or otherwise life changing. I just liked it.
But I don't really feel that way about this one--I liked it, but it was only okay. For instance, I don't particularly enjoy the ninety different points of view that are in this book--I constantly had to think back and wonder about how I got from here to there, and I just really didn't care for it. I'm not a fan of the stilted writing either.
I also don't particularly like the quasi-love triangle that's going on--if you remember, I thought that the romance was a little meh, and that it could've been so much better, if there had been more character development and overall follow-through in this book.
I'm not a big fan of Lisa and Alex either--I'm just not feeling it. I wish that I could, but I don't. I don't understand Lisa's apparent love of anything that can boast to having "man" parts, or her girly/not girly personality. I don't think that the characters were any more than two-dimensional at best.
I honestly don't want to bore you with my monologues about what I didn't like, so I'll stop here.
{ This Review originally appeared on Reviewing in Chaos } I had a hard time putting down the first in the series. C I N left me with more questions than answers. I was thrilled to start Traitor immediately afterwards. Book 2 in the C I N series was just as good as the first! It was full of back story to help answers so of the questions that were pestering me from book 1. However, it threw just as many new questions as me. Christina did a good job of keeping me running in circles along with Lisa trying to figure out who to trust and what was real. I am looking forward to reading more of this series. In fact, I'm looking forward to re-reading books 1 & 2 to see if I can suck any more information out of them that I might of somehow missed the first time! lol!
My rating for this book would be 3 stars. I really enjoyed reading the first book, but unfortunately the second one fell a little short for me. I definitely struggled a lot more with this one, for the first half I just couldn’t get into the book. I think the reason being that there were so many POV shifts that it was just hard to keep track of everything. At times it felt as though we were at one place only for two seconds later to be somewhere different because of the POV changes.
There were SO many twists and turns in this book. The first installment left me desperate for answers to my questions and this book only added to the questions and the answers. I was extremely curious as to what would happen to the main characters.
I did enjoy how this book ended and how there was so much unexpected in this book. Oh, and I really like the cover to this book. It’s so pretty!
