Poconos Pack #2

Mr. Red Riding Hoode

Rate this book
The better to make you mine, my dear…

When it came down to saving his best friend Ben’s relationship, Steven Hoode didn't hesitate to trade his Florida timeshare for a month at Red Wolf Lodge. Cold weather isn't his favorite thing, but hot snow bunnies are, so he plans to make the most of his vacation.

Good karma kicks in when he sees a pretty brunette chatting with the lodge owner. All thoughts of nuptials and nookie take a back seat to the heat that flares between them.

When Graciela “Chela” Mendoza catches sight of the gorgeous man shivering in a red-hooded parka, she realizes why he makes her heart beat faster. He’s her mate. The problem? Steven has no idea his friends are Wolves.

Chela plans to break it to him gently, but when he accidently witnesses the whole Pack shifting, things get a bit…hairy. He bolts, locking himself in his cabin and refusing to listen, even to Ben.

Unless she can get him to see that Wolves are people, too, Chela will lose her mate faster than she can say woof.

Warning: This book contains explicit sex, graphic language, a man packing some nice goodies and a she-Wolf all ready to gobble them up.

Dana Marie Bell wrote her first short story when she was thirteen years old. She attended the High School for Creative and Performing Arts for creative writing, where freedom of expression was the order of the day. When her parents moved out of the city and placed her in a Catholic high school for her senior year she tried desperately to get away, but the nuns held fast, and she graduated with honors despite herself.

Dana has lived primarily in the Northeast (Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, to be precise), with a brief stint on the US Virgin Island of St. Croix. She lives with her soul-mate and husband Dusty, their two maniacal children, an evil ice-cream stealing cat and a bull terrier that thinks it’s a Pekinese.

I love love love Dana Marie Bell's books, but Mr. Red Riding Hoode is not one of her best. For starters, while the book is listed at 97 pages, it's even less that that since there are excerpts for other books tacked onto the end. It's really short and not worth the $2.45 I paid for it (I pre-ordered it from Samhain). The website does say it's a novella, but I still expected upwards of 100 pages. Mr. Red Riding Hoode is more of a novelette as the word count probably hovers around the 19k mark.

Furthermore, you can't read this without having at least read Steel Beauty and Finding Forgiveness. Seriously, don't even bother, because the plot almost directly picks up from Finding and you need Steel for the world-building. There's very little introduction to the characters or to the society of the Pack. Relationship development always gets a bit of a short shrift in Bell's books as she relies on Fated Mate Syndrome, but even knowing that, I thought things moved very quickly between Steve and Chela. Aside from the initial 'We're werewolves' revelation, there was no conflict at all.

The book does have Bell's humor sprinkled throughout and there was one scene involving text messages that I loved. We also get some name-dropping of past characters from The Wallflower and Bare Necessities.

I have to say, overall, I'm rather disappointed. I know Bell struggles with health problems and I wonder if that played a part here. I feel like this is the literary equivalent of raw cookie dough: still tasty, but not a finished product.

I didn't realise this was a short. It was an okay read but...

The second (or third) chapter begins with a dream sequence. The problem is that you don't know that it's a dream and so it reads like you've jumped ahead about a month in time and I seriously wondered if I'd somehow jumped to the end of the book without realising. Once I realised it was a dream sequence, there is still a problem with the point of view. The dream refers to things that Steve wouldn't know about - mating bites etc - but it seems to be his dream. This inconsistency and the whole dream sequence really took me out of the story.

The premise of the book that is mentioned in the blurb is solved in about a chapter.

Steve and another character Charlie (Charlene) are planning some sort of hijinks / surprise for their friends' wedding. They have a long discussion about this, but even though you get the wedding reception, you never get the reveal of what they were up to.

The final issue was Charlie or more over her name and shifter breed. Charlene Lowe is a lion. I was stuck on where I knew the name as I hadn't read any of the other books in this series. Shelley Laurenston's shifter series has the Lowe pride and Victoria Lowe speaks of all the prides in the USA. I'm sure this is coincidence but it struck me that there were similarities.

I think if you know the characters and the series, this is a cute addition. If you're reading it as a stand alone, it lacks.

Very quick, light read. Interesting take on finding out the hard way being a peeping tom doesn't always end the way he expects.
(Sorry -- I found this plot point creepy. Then again if you are dancing skyclad in the middle of the forest -- is that technically peeping/stalking? Aside from this action necessary for the plot conflict -- the male lead was sweet, kind & generous -- not creepy stalker dude.)

My Rating: ★★★½
GOOD: The characteristics of a 3 star book include: interesting characters, a decent storyline, and unique story elements; there was something about the story that I didn’t completely connect with; the book is a solid read. I would recommend it to a friend.
My Thoughts:
I enjoyed this installment of the Poconos Pack series. Graciela, Chela was one of those characters that you wanted to see with a happily-ever-after, and she got one with her human mate, Steve. I appreciated the interconnectedness of the characters in the story as was markedly noted by Steve's friendship with Ben and Dave. I liked the introduction of Charlie into the series. She's going to give poor Ted grief. LOL

I do wish the story was a bit longer. It felt like it was missing something. It was humorous and sweet but it missed that special spark present in the Halle Pumas and Halle Shifters books.

But DMB will always be on my auto-buy list. I love her books.

This is a very short but enjoyable read. It's the second book in her Poconos Pack book (first one is Finding Forgiveness), and this one centers on Steven Hoode. Our hero has no idea his friends are wolves or what is in store for him at the Red Wolf Lodge. One such surprise is Chela, a wolf who just recognized her mate in Steven. The story is fun and cute, and while I didn't agree that finding out about wolves justified Steven's drama, it was fun to watch Ben and Chela trying to get him to come out. It's a bit abrupt, but most shorts are, and if you like wolves, really steamy bedroom scenes and quick reads, you will enjoy this series. (I still think it needs to be longer and more fleshed out. )

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!!
***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! I bought this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book! I own the whole set!

The cover is fantastic, and my favorite kind of cover!

This is the 2nd book in this series which is a spin-off of Halle Pumas! This book is for adults only due to the steamy content.

This is Chela and Steven’s story! Chela is awesome, and you know this if you read the other books. I’m happy she gets her mate this time! Steven is Ben’s best friend, and he gets nosy and ends up shocked in this book. I really love this world that Dana has created where shifters are just people who have an animal form. They aren’t super human. I wish it was so easy to know who your mate is too! This was another great HEA that made me smile!

I highly recommend this book to any shifter fan who loves HEA endings and mates!

This one was really fun. There was a lot of humor and flirting. Also a lot of tongue in cheek humor. You must read the previous books in the series to really enjoy all the inside jokes.

I really enjoyed the first book in the Poconos Pack series, so I was super excited to read more about the wolves in the mountains. While I really enjoyed this book, I forgot how short these stories really are, and I felt like there was so much more that could have been told.

Steve isn’t a fan of the cold, but he’s looking forward to visiting his best friend Ben. Laying eyes on one of Ben’s friends, Graciela, is an added bonus. Finding out they are all werewolves and Chela is his mate is almost more than Steve can handle.

Chela is determined to make Steve hers, but coaxing him to accept the fact that she’s a werewolf isn’t easy. Hopefully with some hilarious dog jokes, and lots of naked time, Chela will be able to show Steve how normal life as a werewolf is, so that she can finally claim her mate.

There was so much that was missing for me in this book. I don’t know if it was just the really short page count or what, but I really felt like there was so much missing in the execution of this novella. There was the potential to be so much more, especially given how freaked Steve was when he witnessed his lover, best friend, and other childhood friends naked in a clearing all changing into wolves. However, it felt so rushed in that a few funny dog pictures and some naked time was enough to bring Steve around completely to the wolfy way of life. I guess it just felt a little ridiculous how quickly things moved for them, but I guess that’s what you get when there are only so many pages in the story.

I sincerely hope that this is fixed for the final copy, however the beginning of chapter two was completely out of line in context with the rest of the story. They had just met at the end of chapter one, and suddenly they are all cuddly and sexy and in “their” cabin and it just didn’t add up. I went back and re-read chapters one and two three times before I finally figured out that, timeline wise, shit wasn’t adding up. It completely threw me out of the flow of the story, and confused me horribly. **Update – I was told this was a mate dream. However, there was no distinguishing this being an ACTUAL dream, which is still pretty confusing to me. :(

One of the things that I enjoyed though was the fact that we got to see all of the Poconos shifters we’ve come to know and love. I adored getting to see more of Ben and Dave, Rick and Belle. I think it’s wonderful that Bell does such a great job of keeping up with her previous characters. I’m excited to see how things work out with Charlie becoming part of the pack as well, since I adore her character.

All in all I was a little disappointed with this book. Not only was it over way too quickly, but it also felt so incredibly rushed in both the romance and plot department. I would have liked to see things pulled out, dragged on, explored further instead of the magic mates fixing everything within mere pages. However, getting the chance to see some of my old favorites is always a treat.
I give Mr. Red Riding Hoode a C-

This will be a mini review for a mini book... Dana Marie Bell classified this as a novella but I swear it's more like a short story. Out of the 97 pages at least 10 were advertizements for her other books. Normally I don't mind that with her books but this one just felt rushed. I was really looking forward to Chela and Steve's story. It was good but it could have been so much better.

If you haven't read the first book in the Pocono's Pack series Finding Forgiveness then I would suggest you read it first. Without that book you would be lost reading this novella. Mr. Red Riding Hoode centers around Ben and Dave's wedding so if you haven't read their book then you won't know who Charlie is or really even Steve. Another must would be Steel Beauty from the Halle Pumas series. It involves Rick and Belle the Alpha and Luna of the Pocono's pack. So really I wouldn't suggest Mr. Red Riding Hoode unless you are caught up with both series. You'd just be lost and it would take away from your enjoyment greatly.

I have adored Chela since Steel Beauty. She is the pack's Omega. She comes into her Omega powers in Steel Beauty. It was great to see in Mr. Red Riding Hoode how much she's grown into a strong and capable person and how happy she is. Before this book we only hear about Steve. There was a big mix up in Finding Forgiveness where Dave thinks that Ben is in love with Steve. I was pleasantly surprised that the Steve I had pictured was all wrong. I imagined this stuffy rich guy. Actually he's really laid back and cool. There really isn't mention of his money at all in the story.

Mr. Red Riding Hoode is so short because Steve sneaks into a pack meeting and sees everyone change into wolves at the beginning of the story. The rest of it is him coming to grips with them all being wolves. His relationship with Chela seems to be more of a forethought. This really disappointed me because I love all of the other books in the Halle Puma, Halle Shifters and Pocono's Pack series. I think that 3 stars is the lowest that I've rated any of Dana Marie Bell's books. Like I said earlier in the review it just felt rushed. It could have been longer.

This is a short story best read in series order, that way you will understand the charactors and world. I recommend starting with "Halle Pumas" series Book 1 The Wallflower it will spine off in book 4 Steel Beauty into the "Poconos Pack" series.

Steven Hoode is best friends with Ben from the Poconos pack. He has no idea his friend and everyone around him are Wolves. Mr. Hood is enchanted by Chela. He can’t seam to get her out of his mind and when he eavesdrops on her talk to a friend about a meeting at night he decides to sneak a peak and find out what is going on.

Graciela “Chela” Mendoza catches/scents a gorgeous man in a red-hooded parka, she knows why he makes her heart beat faster. He’s her mate, but there is one tiny problem he’s human and has no idea his friends are Wolves.

It’s a cute story and nice little pun on the title. The cover is Hawt! If your a fan of Dana Marie Bell it’s a nice read that brings you more into the Poconos Pack. I liked it. It’s not as good as some of the other stories in the Halle Pumas or Halle Shifters series, but Chela and Steven worked together. It took Steven some time to come to terms that his friend and everyone around him are Wolves. The texting between the Chela and Steven to break the ice was funny.

Promising, but entirely too short and there were some parts missing for plot continuity.

Readers had been waiting for Mr. Red Riding Hoode for a very long time, as the release dates had changed a couple of times. Therefore, the anticipation built and we expected not only a smexy story, but some of the elements of suspense that were integral parts of both the Poconos Pack and Halle Shifters series. Perhaps further development of the Gina/Chela dynamic, some flashbacks, or new threats (from old/new cronies...SOMETHING), would have balanced out the story.

Chapter 2 needed editing. It began with a scene that seemed out of place, given the nature of Graciela and Steve's relationship, at that point. It was confusing and may have been a formatting error.

Typically, Ms. Bell creates a longer buildup before the mating scenes and
Mr. Red Riding Hoode would have been better served by a much slower seduction process. It felt like the characters had met on Day 1 and mated by Day 2. This was unrealistic given that Chela had guarded her heart carefully for years, and there were hints that Steve was uncomfortable, fearful or maybe ambivalent about shifters, and becoming one.

I hope the issues are fleshed out in subsequent editions of
Mr. Red Riding Hoode, before the series moves forward.

I love this author. I forgive most of the grammatical errors in all of her stories because I love her writing style. She is funny, interesting and for the most part she has interesting stories. However this "book" was a disappointment. It was still funny, it was still good but you shouldn't promote something as a book when is only 67pgs long!!! That is a novella at the most. For all the wait we have done we should have got more than 67 pages. It felt like a last ditch effort done in order to placate those that are waiting for the series continuation, instead of a well done book that do the series justice. That and only that is the cause of my low rating and disappointment. When you buy a book there is nothing worst than feeling cheated.

This books normally include a plot that needs some resolution before or right after the mating and Mr. Red Riding Hoode was missing this completely. It was a we met, we mated, we live happily ever after kind of book. The scene jumped forward in time to quickly and without any consistency. I may have being ok with it, if they would have call it a novella and sell it cheaper but as it stands is not good enough. Hope the book with Ted and Charlie ends up better.

Ok book. Not up to her usual standards though. Still, it was nice visiting with Belle, Rick and the rest of the Pack. And having Charlie back--oh yeah, I can't wait for Charlie to get her own book. After all, the Pack is now integrated--they have a Puma for a Luna, and if Charlie mates with a wolf, they will have a Lion in the Pack too.

Maybe because I'm a cat person, I haven't liked the Pack books as much as the Puma ones. I do enjoy them, just not as much. I hope she gets around to writing the next book in the Halle Puma series, so that we can see what's happening there, and get a little more info on the arc that it looked like she was starting with Bear Necessities and Cynful.

This one was so much fun to read, mostly due to Steve's reaction to finding out about the Pack's secret. I loved how he kept pulling out werewolf pop culture facts as truths. Then the whole phone call with dog pictures, even better!

I really liked the wedding, glad to see the pay off from the first story. I also find myself intrigued by Charlie and where things could go from here.

Heather's Notes
I loved the title of this book, and while the book was good, it didn't really live up to the title. I am not sure why the book was even named this. All the author did was put Steve in a red coat. Still the book was good, and I liked the way Steve reacted. It felt like how I would react. I also enjoyed the interaction of Steve with the other characters. Chelle was fine, but the book felt like it was more about Steve.

I'd say it's an ok read, but the sexism and over the top stereotypes applied to the women kind of ruin it. Sadly I think it a recurring theme for the author.

I have yet to be disappointed by anything that I have read by Dana Marie Bell and Mr. Red Riding Hoode will not be the first. I laughed throughout this story and I am sure that you will too. I adored Steve when we first met him. He was a great friend to Ben and it was obvious that while he was unaware of Ben’s true nature, their connection was bone deep. So when Steve braves the cold to be a part of his best friend’s wedding, you knew it would be good times. And then for Steve to find the mate he didn’t know he was looking for, even better. And his reaction to said mate and learning that his best friend is a shifter, priceless. Ms. Bell let the good times roll, at least after Steve has a moment or three to collect himself and convince himself he isn’t crazy! But you gotta love the way Chela convinces her man that shifters aren’t a bad thing. I found myself laughing hysterically as I read her texts to Steve. Her mate found out that humans weren’t alone and he is surrounded and Chela found a way to ease him into their mating in such a way you couldn’t help but laugh then sigh at the heat between the two. I love that Steve found the humor in his mating even as he was stressed by the knowledge. Ms. Bell found a way to connect two people that were not looking for love in a way that showed their characters in a wonderful light. Their friends became family and were willing to protect and nurture them. This story was well written and full of love and laughter. I am such a fan of Ms. Bell’s writings and this story is no exception!

Another good story by Dana Marie Bell. Very Short but good. Building on characters that had already been introduced and continuing previous story arcs. This book* would NOT work as a stand alone story. In order to understand most of what's happening and all the inside jokes and references you need to have at least read the first Poconos Pack book, and it would help to have read the Halle series as well. After that you will find lots of humor and plenty of laughing mixed in with believable reactions to finding out your best friend & the hot girl you just met are werewolves. Lets face it. Reading about werewolves, etc. is one thing. Actually finding out they exist? Yep, I'd freak out! Of course, he comes around in a fairly short time, but really, there are only 85 pages in this story. Good natured fun & laughs, hot sex, and very bad singing, what more could you ask for? *I hesitate to call this a book or even a novella because it's so short. To me, it's a good short story. It would go great in an anthology, but to call it a "Book" and charge you for a Book, is really misleading. It rank right up there with the old bait and switch routine. For 85 pages, it should be no more than $0.99, or better yet, free as a gift to loyal readers. I must admit I quit purchasing any more of her books. No matter how much I like the story line, I don't like being misled.

Ok this was promising, but entirely too short.
I was so looking forward to Mr. Red Riding Hoode for a very long time but it just fell flat for me, it felt like Chela and Steve met on Day 1 and mated on Day 2. This was unrealistic given that Chela had guarded her heart carefully for years, and everything that she had gone threw in the previous books, and there were hints that Steve was uncomfortable, or fearful about shifters. And it seemed that it only took a few funny dog pictures and some naked time to bring Steve around completely to the shifter way of life. I guess it just felt a little ridiculous how quickly things moved for them.

Chapter 2 threw me for a loop. It began with a scene that seemed out of place, given the nature of Graciela and Steve's relationship, at this point in the story.
It was so confusing for me that I even went back and started over, to figure it out.

All in all I have to say I was a little disappointed with this book. Not only was it over way too quickly, but it also felt rushed in both the romance and plot department. I would have liked to see things pulled out, dragged on, explored further instead of the magic mates fixing everything within mere pages

The Premise
Steven Hoode sees Graciela “Chela” Mendoza when he cashes in his vacation at his best friend Ben’s lodge in the Poconos. Steve’s from Florida, so the cold isn’t his fave but he’s hoping Chela can warm him up. Chela sees Steve and realizes he’s her mate (gotta love that instant connection). But she has to break it to him, since he has no idea that his best friend and his “family” are actually wolves.

The good
I like the series, which is what made me pick this up. Steve and Chela have their own heat and cute moments.

The bad
There really isn’t much to this story - the romance isn’t particularly compelling and the sex is something you can read anywhere. To continue this series, I’d like to see some more development of the individual characters. I do love series romances (not cliffhangers but a series that has a continuing theme), but I don’t like it when the romance that should be front and center is pushed aside to build the overarching storyline.

The bottom line
An alright read that doesn’t do enough with the main romance to make it worth reading on its own. I’m hoping the next in the series is better.

I love Dana Marie Bell, her books are fun and I know when I buy one I'll have a wonderful romp. This book lived up to that reputation. Perhaps not quite up to the Halle Shifters/Pumas novels but still a good read.

I think perhaps this book was a tad too short, more pages might have just given it the extra umpft to be up to the Halle books. But I do love Chela and Steven their characters were relatable and I cared. I also enjoy that DMB has no issue including non traditional couples and cross orientation friends. I loved Dave and Ben's story in the last Pocono book and it was great to see more of them here. I also was excited to meet Charlie and I can't wait to read her and Ted's story. That lady has spunk I think it will be another fun read.

3 stars for this enjoyable read. I got exactly what I wanted from a DMB novel

I wasn't aware that this was a short story when I picked it up, so I was a little disappointed when it didn't have the usual excitement and story line that I expect from a DMB book. I really was in the mood for something funny and exciting so I didn't love this book like I usually do with DMB but it was still an enjoyable read. I liked being back in the world of DMB's shifters and I really did laugh out load at so many parts.

As always, I fell in love with the characters and enjoyed their banter and interactions. I would have loved to have more of this book but it was still nice to have this little bit. I'm really excited for the next one in the series.

Steve Hoode would do anything for his best friend Ben, leaving Florida to head to Red Wolf Lodge and be part of his wedding seems like no big deal. That is until he finds out that there are really things that go bump in the night, particularly wolf shifters and he is the mate to the Omega of the pack.

Graciela "Chela" Mendoza wasn't expecting to find her mate anytime soon, but when Steve arrives she knows it is only a matter of time before claiming him. However, when he observes a pack meeting and has a minor freak out she is worried if he will be able to accept her as his mate.

I really liked this story. I have so eagerly been awaiting chela's story. But I hate to say it seemed rushed and VERY SHORT. I felt Chela should have had a full length story and we should have gotten to know more about Steven, her mate. It seemed very rushed. I was glad to have seen the others members of the pack but still, RUSHED.

Maybe the author will give more a back story down the road but because it wasn't fleshed out and given the book's due, I gave it only a 3 rating. I think if you like the Poconos stories, you will like this but because of it being so short, its like a sweet tasty piece of chocolate, gone before it could be savored.

A really great addition to the Poconos Pack. Given the past, I was prepared for some kind of conflict, or turmoil and when there was none...I was a bit confused. But, I loved the humor in the book, likely because it is so similar to my own writing style.

In all, a cute love story with a sexy edge. Can't wait to see the next one...the Leo's sista? Oooh. However, our resident Doc needs some Leo love, does he not?

Enjoy! =)

Okay, the second chapter completely freaked me out because I though they had escalated way too quickly after meeting so I kind of stopped reading for a while before I realized it was a mating dream. I had been waiting for this one to come out for so long but I found myself disappointed with it. Not as much humor, not as much conflict in my eyes, and just too short. Dana Marie Bell could have done better with this one

2.5. This book had some choppy parts that annoyed me big time. I thought I was missing pages, but no that's the way it was suppose to read. There was no reason for it. Also the most annoying part is how it just abruptly came to an end. On my kindle the end of it was at 81%...no book should end that early without a warning.

Usually when an author writes a series of books, you have to go back and read the first few books to catch yourself up to remember the storyline.
Not here I remembered the story from the beginning of Ben and Dave this was wonderful glad chela found her mate.

Looking forward to the Lowë pride female falling for her wolf
