I grunted from the weight of the suitcase as I heaved it out of the back of the van. What had I packed again? I didn't remember it being this heavy when I loaded it into the twin's car only seven hours ago.
Seven long and painful hours. I forced a smile as Esther and Estelle stepped up onto the curb, matching prim skirts and twin sets as much their uniform as their very comfortable looking shoes. They didn't smile back, but through my connection to them from the family magic, I was sure their flat expressions had nothing to do with how they felt about me.
Well. Pretty sure.
Summer is over, and Syd is finally off to Harvard to take her witch training, leaving things back in Wilding Springs in her grandmother’s crazy but capable hands. The rush of excitement about her new beginning is quickly doused when Syd stumbles on a secret club taking advantage of normal students, including her friend Simon. An unhappy roommate, troubles with Quaid and his Enforcer friends and Liam’s sudden protectiveness makes it hard for Syd to fit in, let alone get to the bottom of what’s happening on campus. If only her Council Leader mother would listen…
I write a lot of paranormal books for someone who is afraid of the dark. And I wonder why I have to sleep with the lights on. Sometimes life is a teenaged B horror movie and I'm the one who investigates when the scary music is playing. But the voices are calling and resistance is… Yes. I am a Star Trek geek, too. And a fan of RPG’s. With a slight coolness factor since I've been told I'm allowed to join the pops.
Every time I read a Hayle Coven novel, I feel as though I'm visiting with dearly beloved family. This time Syd took me along to experience the first few days of her first year at Harvard University; and, yes, they do accept witches but we're not supposed to know about it. Surely now, with her mom as leader of the High Council and her dear Quaid training as an enforcer she should be able to settle down and have a good time? Unfortunately trouble in the form of old enemies with their mind set on world domination, her ghostly ex best friend and some rogue vampires are waiting to make her life difficult. Syd can never turn a blind eye when those she loves are in danger or being taken advantage of and once again she, together with Sassafras, several of their old friends, and her werewolf body guard, Charlotte, rush to the rescue.
To complicate matters Syd is having real and very painful boyfriend trouble; something she doesn't need on top of all the danger she faces. At least, in Divided Heart, Syd is back to her snarky, smart-mouthed self while her very amusing thought patterns and inner dialogue kept a constant smile on my face. Sassafras, the dearly beloved and equally snarky demon cat, is right up there with Syd, giving a helping paw and a comforting purr where ever it is needed.
I find the way in which Patti Larsen depicts the lives and typical problems of teenagers on the very brink of adulthood very interesting and highly realistic. Growing up can be a painful process and this is all too apparent from the trials, emotions and conflicting interests and feelings all the younger characters experience.
For a reading experience filled chock full with action, suspense, humor and a healthy dash of sadness, I highly recommend Divided Heart as an absolute must-read. Please be sure to get the first eight novels in the Hayle Coven series before you read this; I promise you, you will not regret it. Thumbs up, a huge cheer and more than five well deserved stars to another wonderful book from this extremely talented writer. (Ellen Fritz)
Think of that comfortable sense of familiarity like a favourite blanket that is welcoming and envelops you in its warmth and this series does that for me. Sydlynn has been trying to fit in all her life and the fact that she is part witch/sidhe princess and demon makes her unique. Her life has just been one drama after the next and it looks like College is going to be no different. Trying to be normal is hard when you a a coven leader and you have saved the world a couple of times. Away from home and her coven, Syd has to fend for herself though she is reunited with some of the old gang that causes certain complications to arise and her reputation proceeds her. Something strange is up with her friends and they are hanging with bad company and Syd is determined to find out what is going on even if it means sorting it out herself. I like Syd, she has a lot to deal with and she just gets on with things though being a teenager can get overwhelming at times. With so many people trying to kill her, you would think she would be incredibly jaded but she isn't and sure she has her moments of "poor me" but she picks herself up and is there for her family and friends. Dealing with blood magic, evil witches named Ameline and rogue vampires is run of the mill for Syd but affairs of the heart are harder to overcome. Quaid, he seriously frustrated and annoyed me in this book, sounding like a self-centred brat who needs to get over himself already. When Syd needs him, he is never there and off with his new circle of enforcer friends and so many times he has let her down. Liam on the other hand is cute, loyal and devoted to her, dropping everything at a moment's notice to help her out so for me it is a no brainer over who she should choose. Plenty of action in this series with a touch of romance than makes me smile.
I saw Ms. Larsen's first book Family Magic on BookBub.com and thought it sounded interesting, a which demon gal, different. That hooked me to buy the first story in the 20 book series. The writing and characters kept me hooked through the remaining 19 books. I rarely will buy Ebooks when they're $5.99 ... after Family Magic I didn't blink, just bought the next one and downloaded. I just had to see what was going to happen next. I really got invested in the story line, wanting to know what twists and turns would happen next. I don't know how many times I burst out laughing or cried my eyes out as the story unfolded (make sure you have a box of tissues for the last couple books you'll need them), or how often I didn't want to put the book down (but had to because my lunch hour was over) The characters were believable ... some you fell in love with, others you loved to hate. Anything I write about the story will give away what happens, but so you have to read them and see what happened. You won't be sorry you picked them up. I just wish there was more after book story, but there are more in the Hayle Coven universe. I read the books one after another, so this is the same review for all of them.
I'm 50 and enjoy young adult books because the lack of sex scenes in them You get to know the characters more in them. Although Syd does have sex in some of them, there is no description of it, just mentioned that she did have it and maybe waking up with her boyfriend. My niece is 14 and I'd give them to her to read.
Once again, another great installment into the Hayle Coven series! I am so wrapped up in these characters that I am dreading the day Patti says that's all, this is the last one. If you haven't read any of this series I highly recommend jumping right in!
And I freaking cried. Oh. Syd. Quiads a jerkwad. But man oh man. This book. My heart wrenched and pulled and broke. Oh Quaid. WhAt am I going to do w you!
4. 5 stars. I enjoyed the vampire virus girl. I am interested to see what she does next. I am also glad that Syd made friends. Things that made me not so happy: - Quaid. Frankly, I've been willing to push aside his past faults. He can mess up, and I'll be willing to forgive him and move on. But not now. He's descended into complete and utter assholeyness. Ew. I can't believe he was so awful to Syd! - Her mother. I had a bad feeling about the whole 'mantle of power' thing. But her bitchiness...HMPH! Really. Syd is only 18. You're her MOTHER, lady. Act like it. Would you rather have an alive daughter because you helped her, or a dead daughter because she's all grown up now and supposed to handle it on her own? Hmmm?
Other topics: Liam. Gotta love him. I just am not sure if I want him to be with Syd. I kind of want her to have a new possible love interest introduced. That would be fun. Perhaps in the next book.
Also: hopes for future books (yes, I know they're all out, it's just what I want to see): Syd visiting the Sidhe world. The demon plane. Celeste going bye-bye. Permanently.
