You must be careful. I turn toward the voice, see a shape floating next to me in the dark, glowing softly iridescent, all the colors of the rainbow and others for which I have no names.
Of what?
The sound and feel of the shape is feminine. She lifts her arm and points. I see them then, below and before me, two vast armies stretching out over an empty gray plane, facing each other. But they've not yet begun to fight. I recognize witches and vampires, Sidhe and demons, other creatures I've never laid eyes on, crowding one side. On the other side are humans, feeling empty and cold, though their power crackles around them like electric fire.
You must be ready. My companion's voice is very sad, makes tears rise in my eyes. The war is coming and you only have a little time left to prepare.
When Syd dreams of a terrible battle between sorcerers and all other magical races, she is tasked by a mysterious maji with protecting the Light and the Shadow, a pair of teenagers she rescues from the veil. Forced to track down the Chosen of the Light for assistance against this new threat, Syd teams with an unlikely foe turned ally in a stand against the rise of the sorcerer’s Brotherhood.
I write a lot of paranormal books for someone who is afraid of the dark. And I wonder why I have to sleep with the lights on. Sometimes life is a teenaged B horror movie and I'm the one who investigates when the scary music is playing. But the voices are calling and resistance is… Yes. I am a Star Trek geek, too. And a fan of RPG’s. With a slight coolness factor since I've been told I'm allowed to join the pops.
Every time I sit down with another Hayle Coven book, it is like going on a new, sometimes horrifying and sometimes hilariously funny, journey. Patti Larsen has a refreshingly unique and evermore exciting story to tell about Syd and co. This time Syd is plagued by dreams of war. No, not a guns and tanks war; a war fought with magic between ... oh, I think you have to read it to find out! Then there are the two children whom Syd is supposed to protect; that is if they would stop escaping and getting themselves and everybody else into trouble.
I thoroughly enjoyed Light and Shadow and used every free moment to indulge myself in the adventures of Syd, Sassafras, cute Sidhe gatekeeper Liam and Galleytrot, hound of the Wild Hunt. With all the action and nail-biting suspense and a story that moves forward all the time with never a dull moment, this is adrenalized reading at its best.
Syd's character development is masterfully advanced with every book. In Light and Shadow she has more self-confidence than ever before. She is learning how to use her considerable power wisely and handles snap decisions with remarkable maturity. When an old enemy surfaces who may be able to help Syd, she has to make a difficult choice; mercy or revenge. With her mother involved in counsel affairs, her father busy co-ruling Demonicon and her grandmother occupied with coven business, she is on her own. Syd's love life is also still rather confused but, despite the hurt and stress this causes her, she gets on with her very busy life and doesn't whine and mope about it.
I'm probably carrying on and on about Syd's balanced and responsible character here but this is the best character development I have ever encountered in a series. The characters in the Hayle Coven novels are not just characters, they are real persons.
I highly recommend Light and Shadow to all readers of paranormal books and I urge you to get the previous ten books to enjoy one of the best series ever. A standing ovation for this book and its highly gifted creator! (Ellen Fritz)
Teenage part sidhe, part demon, part vampire, and all over super witch Syd's already been through the typical coming to age teenage angst stuff. She's pushed everyone away and rejected the world around her. But this time the fate of the all magical planes rest on her helping someone else. A brother and sister whose destinies are greater than Syd's. One to save the world from destruction. The other to destroy it.
If you're a fan of Larsen: Did you just get chills?
Once again were treated to Syd against the rest of the world with her usual tenacity and style. But she's also realizing the limitations of those around her, like her mom, her dad, and seeking away of protecting those who are important to her rather than her reckless old way. It was nice to see her outgrow her predetermined destiny with Quaid, let him go and be happy. And I have to admit I'm definitely on board with vampire clan Sebastian as a love interest. They've had a long dramatic history and unlike Quaid, yummy Sebastian isn't board of the action in Syd's life.
Note: Again one sitting. I picked it up last night and giggled all night long until I finished this book at 4:30am this morning. Love Syd! LOVE The Hayle Coven Novels. Excited about the pending release of the Queen of Darkness. :-)
I didn't like Trill. Owen was cute. Damn on the revelations. I'm so glad the vampires and the witches are getting closer. It makes for good allies in war time. Speaking of which, Syd and Sebastian. I SO ship it. I hope it happens!!!
I saw Ms. Larsen's first book Family Magic on BookBub.com and thought it sounded interesting, a which demon gal, different. That hooked me to buy the first story in the 20 book series. The writing and characters kept me hooked through the remaining 19 books. I rarely will buy Ebooks when they're $5.99 ... after Family Magic I didn't blink, just bought the next one and downloaded. I just had to see what was going to happen next. I really got invested in the story line, wanting to know what twists and turns would happen next. I don't know how many times I burst out laughing or cried my eyes out as the story unfolded (make sure you have a box of tissues for the last couple books you'll need them), or how often I didn't want to put the book down (but had to because my lunch hour was over) The characters were believable ... some you fell in love with, others you loved to hate. Anything I write about the story will give away what happens, but so you have to read them and see what happened. You won't be sorry you picked them up. I just wish there was more after book story, but there are more in the Hayle Coven universe. I read the books one after another, so this is the same review for all of them.
I'm 50 and enjoy young adult books because the lack of sex scenes in them You get to know the characters more in them. Although Syd does have sex in some of them, there is no description of it, just mentioned that she did have it and maybe waking up with her boyfriend. My niece is 14 and I'd give them to her to read.
I literally devour these books and enjoy immersing myself in the Hayle Coven and their co-leader now Sydlynn. After surviving a family visit to Demonicon Syd is looking forward to some time out to recharge her batteries but that is wishful thinking on her part. She is the defender of the underdog and is literally thrust into a situation where she must defend two kids who hold the future of the paranormal world in their hands. Taking on the sorcerers who are in hot pursuit will be a formidable task but Syd is more than qualified for it, what with her saving the world over and over again, she has an impressive track record. It has been great watching Syd mature from an insecure teenager who refused her witch heritage to a young woman on the brink of achieving her destiny yet still retaining her love of family and the coven, trying to put them first. She will have to draw on her magic to defeat this evil and while she is more than up to the task, Syd struggles to put her heart on the line again after it was crushed by Quaid. Sebastian would definitely be my pick as a viable love interest though I do have a soft spot for Liam who is an all round nice guy and a great shoulder to cry on. Old enemies will resurface and it may be surprising as to whose side they choose in a the war that is inevitable and only the outcome remains elusive. I will eagerly pick up the next book in the series as I can't get enough of this series.
It is so rare for me to keep reading a serious series like this one past five or six books. I generally gradually get bored with waiting for some resolution to the main story line. Not so with these books because each book has such a strong story that is always pushing the main story along. There's no waiting for something to happen. The characters are well developed and they change and grow with their experiences. Kudos once again for a completely new and surprising twist in the story line.
Patti Larsen is one of my favorite authors and I am addicted to the Hayle Coven Series, but this storyline was not as great as her other books. Don't get me wrong, her writing style is supreme!!! I just didn't enjoy the storyline as much as I have the other books in this series. I look forward to book 12 in the series and more adventures with Syd.
Oh my god. Another amazing story in this series. Syd's becoming such as strong character and finding out her t h. What she is. Sigh. So good. I couldn't put it down. Sigh. So da*n good. Can't wait to get to the next!
