I felt Liam reach for me, turned again, train of worry broken, beaming, full of joy. And for a long, seemingly endless moment, it was he and I and the magic singing between us.
Congratulations, Ameline's mental voice broke through my happiness and slapped my temper so hard my demon howled in fury. For saddling yourself with further baggage. She laughed coldly. Well done.
I cut her off, Liam's power thrumming with concern as I shook my head, wedding night mood ruined.
The bitch.
Syd’s made her choice, marrying Liam, much to the pleasure of the High Council and her family. But her honeymoon is cut short when Fate comes calling at last. Syd’s final confrontation with the Brotherhood leads her into more danger than she’s ever faced—and throws her headlong into a last battle even her power might not be enough to overcome…
I write a lot of paranormal books for someone who is afraid of the dark. And I wonder why I have to sleep with the lights on. Sometimes life is a teenaged B horror movie and I'm the one who investigates when the scary music is playing. But the voices are calling and resistance is… Yes. I am a Star Trek geek, too. And a fan of RPG’s. With a slight coolness factor since I've been told I'm allowed to join the pops.
Each one is always better than the last but COVEN LEADER really touched my heart. If you have been following along with this series (yes, I'm talking all 18 books BEFORE this one!) then you know what has been building up for Syd. While her choice at the end of ENFORCER wasn't my choice, after reading COVEN LEADER I have a new appreciation for where Patti went with this. Lots of emotion in COVEN LEADER, and I'm talking from beginning to end. By now, these characters are our family, they are our friends, and they are our enemies. We have invested our time and hearts into each and every one of them. Go ahead and grab your FULL box of Kleenex before you even start reading this one. One more. I can't wait to see what is in store for us but a little apprehensive also knowing THE LAST CALL is exactly that. The last HCN in this series. As usual, well done Patti.
I think I went through half a box of tissues the last 2-3 books in this series.
I saw Ms. Larsen's first book Family Magic on BookBub.com and thought it sounded interesting, a which demon gal, different. That hooked me to buy the first story in the 20 book series. The writing and characters kept me hooked through the remaining 19 books. I rarely will buy Ebooks when they're $5.99 ... after Family Magic I didn't blink, just bought the next one and downloaded. I just had to see what was going to happen next. I really got invested in the story line, wanting to know what twists and turns would happen next. I don't know how many times I burst out laughing or cried my eyes out as the story unfolded (make sure you have a box of tissues for the last couple books you'll need them), or how often I didn't want to put the book down (but had to because my lunch hour was over) The characters were believable ... some you fell in love with, others you loved to hate. Anything I write about the story will give away what happens, but so you have to read them and see what happened. You won't be sorry you picked them up. I just wish there was more after book story, but there are more in the Hayle Coven universe. I read the books one after another, so this is the same review for all of them.
I'm 50 and enjoy young adult books because the lack of sex scenes in them You get to know the characters more in them. Although Syd does have sex in some of them, there is no description of it, just mentioned that she did have it and maybe waking up with her boyfriend. My niece is 14 and I'd give them to her to read.
Well I can say I had already guessed who she would choose though I was sad to know she would not get her magical "happily ever after" but life is certainly no fairytale for Syd. Gran was finding it difficult to live with Syd's decision but under the circumstances it was the right choice. Of course the honeymoon is short lived as Syd finally gets her wish to try and free Sebastian which I am very happy to read. Drama at every turn and married life will make Syd realise that it is not just her life that is at stake any more when she runs off to god knows where to thwart The Brotherhood and there is still Ameline to be dealt with.
Oh my swearword, what the hell? I am gob smacked and Patti you lulled me into a false sense of security after the wedding. I must admit I did not see that one coming and seriously I would be happy to get on the bandwagon and stalk Ameline myself and rip her heart out. This instalment is heart-breaking and just maybe Quaid redeems himself a little though Syd has a long way to go before it is finally over. It will be like losing an old friend as I have become invested in this series and that is the art of being a great storyteller that the reader can empathise with Syd and feel like she is family. I am saddened to know the next book is the last one in the series though Patti has done a wonderful job tying up the loose threads and after the roller coaster ride of this one, the final book will be earth-shattering I am sure.
Although I enjoyed all the Hayle Coven books so far, I find Coven Leader to be the most realistic. From a wedding and an epic battle, to an execution and a funeral, this book contains joy, action and extreme sadness.
Balance is the word that comes to mind in this case. Syd, though still snarky, sometimes a bit childish and often unnecessarily temperamental, is far more adult and responsible in this book. Although she kicks butt as usual, she suffers a major betrayal and a great loss. Said loss is why I will issue a definite Kleenex warning at this point.
The evil antagonist, Ameline, very necessary to Syd's cause in this book, comes into her full maji power. The question is, what will happen after she has served her purpose?
Despite Syd's married status, handsome fellows like Piers, Sebastian and especially Quaid are still around. Quaid in particular is a bit irrational about her marriage; a fact that brings a poignancy to the story.
I particularly enjoyed the imaginative descriptions of the different planes of existence. The fact that Syd can change into a being that fits in with which ever plane she is on, is another masterfully creative touch.
As usual I would advise readers to get the first eighteen books in this series before reading Coven Leader. Filled with riveting action, nail-biting suspense, romance and humor, this book certainly had me on an emotional rollercoaster at times. I recommend this book as a truly worthwhile read. I'm still reeling from this book. In the words of Syd 'I'm gonna throw up' this book was effing epically amazing. If y'all are fans if this series, and Patti Larsen pick up this book or for newbies, this series. If you haven't started, get 'Family Magic' it's only .99c. You are missing out on such great I mean awesome I mean idk what I mean cause I'm still speechless! If you more details HOLLA @ me! This is a series that will wrench your heart in every direction, sew it back up just to splay out again. Patti Larsen ruined me. Totally ruined me! And in satisfied!
Wow! I am almost speechless at how awesome this book was. It is my favorite so far. Its full of action from the start and starts to tie up loose threads. I didnt expect the big battle to happen so soon, but I loved that it lead right into it. You will need your tissues near the end since there are a couple suprise twists. I cant believe this series is almost over. I love the work of Patti Larsen! I hope something of this review made sense, because I am still in awe over the story I just read.
Omg what can I say? So much going on in this book. Almost everything comes together at once, again in unexpected ways. But buy a box of tissues; you'll need them.
