Tentacular Tales #4

All You Need Is Alien Love

Rate this book
An alien invasion and a mysterious Sanctioning Ceremony—what could possibly go wrong?

RIVER

Now that I’m Earth-married to my sexy alien boo, everything should be sunshine and rainbows.
If only.
Instead, the Alliance is preparing for a hostile alien invasion any day now.
Am I stressed about that? Yes.
Am I more stressed about the Iyaran Sanctioning Ceremony that will make my marriage to Kai official on an intergalactic level?
You bet your sweet ass I am!
Kai and I just need to survive all of this so we can go on our super epic honeymoon. I’m not letting anyone or anything mess with that!

KAI

I dream of the day when River and I can finally settle into peaceful wedded bliss.
But nothing in our lives is ever quite that easy.
We need to stop this invasion and find the answers to critical questions. Like what exactly were those medical experiments that were secretly done to me…?
And River and I need to endure the three days of matrimonial hazing—ahem, I mean, traditional rituals of the Iyaran Sanctioning Ceremony.
I should be worried, but I know with River at my side we can face anything the universe throws at us.

All You Need is Alien Love is the fourth book in the Tentacular Tales series and should be read in chronological order. Get ready for: tentacles galore (even some unexpected ones), underwater shenanigans, embarrassing alien rituals, Groxil slime (it makes a useful comeback), Lord Vardox and Captain Starblade (they might just be moving to the next level), surprises (they come in threes), and more Star Trek references than you can shake a phaser at!

This took me a really long time to read.
Not really sure why. It was cute. 3 books in one.
1)River’s advice column
2)Tentacular Tales of Captain Starblade, Ch. 161
3)River and Kai’s love story

River and Kai get officially married and save planet earth from invasion.
There are a few surprises that were super cool
and I look forward to spin off books in the future 👏🏻👏🏻

Okay, peeps, this book was a very highly anticipated one for me and since it's the fourth book in a series with an overarching plot, I want to keep this spoiler-free so this is going to be short and sweet.

I really, really love this series so much. Chloe has such a way with writing truly amazing, vibrant characters. For someone whose love of a book usually hinges on its characters, her books are never a disappointment. It's so easy to get lost in her stories! Tentacular Tales was not only my introduction to her work, but also my intro to the exciting combo that is romance & tentacles, so it'll always hold a special place in my heart.

Now, we've been waiting on this book for a while because it needed some extra time to percolate in Chloe's fantastical and quirky brain and oh man, was it worth the wait. I knew it would be, though. Chloe hasn't disappointed yet and I doubt she ever will. I adore River and Kai to pieces - all the characters in this series really (aside from a select few, ahem). River is hilarious and more intellegent than people usually expect. I love his brand of *extra*. He's such a fun main character! But Kai is amazing too! He may be stoic and somewhat grumpy most of the time, but he has such a sweet, soft center, especially when it comes to River. Their love is beautiful.

The overarching story was built up in the first three books and there is definitely some pay-off in this one. I really loved how it all ended, and that's all I'll say about it. Also, the much-teased mysterious Sactioning Ceremony? SO much more than I expected. And so fucking epic.

To sum up, All You Need is Alien Love hit me right in the f*cking feels, as River would say. This book is undoubtedly a highlight of the year for me and cements Chloe as one of my favorite authors. Check this series out if you haven't already!

I received an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in exchange for an honest review.

Greg Bordeaux does it again! He just brings that right balance to this wild ride of a series. You are captured and never lose your place throughout just adoring every dang minute of the listen.

well, Chloe did what they did best and wrote a unique, fun filled addition to their Tentacuoar Tales series! River and Kai are moving forward in their relationship and plan on making their mating official so that when the time comes to travel, all species see and acknowledge their union.
With the aftermath of the events of the last installment, River is learning to accept his new normal. Kai, being the supportive partner along with the rest of their team help him adjust along with all the other problems in the universe who dont seem to want them to have an easy HEA. Was great to see past characters showing their growth as well and not wait to see where they end up in the future installments. Thank you, Chloe, for sticking to your true voice and showing a unique and thrilling take on this genre. I will always look forward to seeing what your brain comes up with next for us.

A Tentacular Mating Ceremony

River Sullivan - half human beau of alien Kai - is at it again with his writing, but this time it's not the Tentacular Tales of Captain Starblade.
Now it's the Alliance’s new advice column for those who are Earth bound, whether for a holiday or longer; Spill the TEA: Trustworthy Earthling Advice.
This addition to the books is terrific.
I particularly liked the letter from 'Sincerely, Clueless and Pantsless'.
It's worth noting that in the responses from Dr TEA there are also nice little digs at societal expectations and 'rules'. His response to Clueless says it all.
One of the best 'cultural miscommunications' Archer uses in a from a letter to Dr TEA about a gift from an elderly neighbour.
Dr TEA (River), is quick to reassure him;
"Also, “shepherd’s pie” is a meal that was eaten by people who had the occupation of a shepherd. No one named Shepherd was murdered to make the dish."
Apart from writing and working with the Alliance as ambassador, River is simultaneously busy preparing for the Sanctioning Ceremony for him and his tentacled hubby Kai. It's an Iyaran matrimonial trial lasting three days that will recognise their marriage throughout the galaxy.
Having just recovered from the trials of defeating an intergalactic assassin, and dealing with the ongoing threat of Layne Madison's potential return, River has a lot on his proverbial plate.
Given the fact Madison is planning to invade earth with an intergalactic ‘racial purity’ group, and the Alliance supports alien refugees, there's a metaphor here that's pretty clear.
We also have some aliens like Zion, who has been rejected for being gay. I look forward to his full story.
There's a lot of backstory here that I'm not going to go through, but suffice to say Archer manages to summarise much in the first chapter as well as introducing lots of side characters.
It's also - Earth side - set in Vegas.
Vegas, Aliens, buffets and Elvis impersonators mixing with alien dance reviews, enemies, a hippie uncle and a telenovela-loving Latino BFF Evan, make for a fun mix in this ongoing series.
Whilst it might be a fun and sparkly series it does deal with current sociopolitical issues, offset with the humour and the Lord Vardox/Captain Starblade scenes.
There's also the chaotic families and the new reveal about River's parents.
This is brimming with queer joy, SF geek references, annoyingly embarrassing family members, tentacle steam and tender moments.
I absolutely love this series.
And I'm so ready for the honeymoon and Tentacular Tales Con.

All You Need Is Alien Love is the fourth book in Chloe Archer’s beautifully weird and charming Tentacular Tales series. It’s funny, sweet, full of action, and packed with all the quirky touches that make this series so much fun to read. And it really should be read in order to fully enjoy the ongoing storyline.

River and Kai return just as in love, and just as sweet and lovable, as ever. River is still his over-the-top (in all the best ways), charming self. Pop culture–obsessed, unapologetically flamboyant, and full of love for sci-fi, life, and especially for Kai. Meanwhile, Kai is still the grumpy but soft-hearted alien who perfectly balances River’s high-energy personality.

Other than romance, there’s a lot going on plot-wise, bringing some resolution to long-running plotlines. The looming alien invasion keeps everyone (reader and character) on edge, and nearly every character we’ve come to care about gets their moment to shine (Nirblob really steps up in a big way).
There are also reunions, battles, and unexpected twists that keep the story moving forward. As always, there’s a good dose of pop culture references (which I really loved!), wild alien tech, laugh-out-loud moments, and an overall “sweetness” that ties everything together.
And yes, the much-teased mysterious Iyaran Sanctioning Ceremony was totally worth the wait. It wasn’t at all what I expected, but in the best possible way. I’ll say no more because, in the words of River Song: 'Spoilers!' 😉

I also really appreciated how the book eased me back into the story, even though it’s been a while since I read the last one. Chloe Archer does a great job slipping in reminders and backstory without making it feel like a recap. And even with so much going on, the emotional part of the story, the love and family (both found and blood), never gets lost in all of that.

If you’ve loved the previous books (and let’s be honest, what’s not to love?), this one won’t disappoint. The book wraps up a lot of loose ends, gives River and Kai the HEA they deserve, and still leaves the door open for maybe future stories.
Personally, I’ve got all my fingers crossed for Mal and Benji's story…and definitely Zamir and Wilder's too!

I received a copy of this book from the author, and this is my unbiased review.

It was so much fun being back with River, Kai, and every one part of this universe of alien adventures. I had missed this group and their shenanigans. Also, we finally get to be privy to the events of the elusive Sanctioning Ceremony!! River, of course, brought his own brand of spice to it and I loved everything about it!

The series arc with Layne Madison also comes to a head and all I have to say is thank the Goddess for Nirblob. He's warmed his way into my heart, along with everyone else it seems, after the events of this book.

There were a few big surprises, including a major one at the end and I am absolutely here for it! I'm also looking forward to some Benji/Mal and Wilder/Zamir hopefully in the future!!

It was a… worthy finale, but for me it didn’t reach the level of books 1–3, which I devoured one after the other. Here, especially at the beginning, I struggled a bit. All the plot threads do come together, but I was a bit disappointed by the ceremony in particular. Come on, it was built up over 1–2 books, and I have no idea why such a state secret was made out of it. I actually found it pretty cute and romantic, and nothing that was super embarrassing or awkward…
For me, there were definitely too many spicy scenes and sometimes too little plot, which is probably why I enjoyed the invasion part more. I love the romance part, but the spicy part less so — and the invasion part had exactly the kind of humor I adore.
Chloe managed to save the ending for me a bit with the twist. I’ll just say: 5 years instead of 9 months. Otherwise, I would have given this 3 stars. I honestly don’t understand why every “happy ending” and every couple has to be pushed into having kids. Especially—come on—River is 22 years old, had an unusual childhood, just recently found his parents again, went through a ton of action, and has only just gotten married/met his partner. Can’t they be given some time together? And come on, they’re going to live together for hundreds of years… 🥴🤔😅

4.25/5. Aside from the need for a little editing love (repetition, places that weren’t so consistent with details, missing or misplaced words) this was pretty great. I will admit to it not being something I was overjoyed with, which was extra off and odd for me. I’m not ever really a “mood” reader, but I finally have a frame of reference for what that means—I just was not in the fucking mood for fluffy. That’s not in any way reflective of the book, nor does it have any impact on the stars (as usual for me), and I’m super glad I powered through my own bullshit and continued the same story I usually love. I feel like there will be way more in future work to help make up for the—slightly disappointing—sparse ending. I mean, considering how many of the overarching plot points concluded in this installment, I was just expecting more closure, I guess..? In any case, excellent addition to not only the series, but to the interwoven stories that it contains. The Starblade and Vardox line was particularly perfect and will make everyone obsessed with them squeal and kick their feet whilst giggling. The little things, folx. They fuel us.

I enjoyed this entertaining romance. As always River was a blast and Kai was super cool. With the threat to Earth looming over them, their love and commitment to one another held strong throughout the madness and mayhem. Not much angst...a lot of laughs with family and friends joined together to fight the evil...Operation CHAOS for the win! The twist towards the end was surprisingly delightful. The adventure was wonderful and I definitely recommend reading...ALL 4 books!

When I saw this book was finally published I was sooooo stoked to continue River and Kai's story! This was full of all of the campiness, wholesome, and loveable vibes I've come to expect from these characters. Yet again, I was giggling my way through this book. Can't wait for more!!

This was fine as a conclusion to the series, but maybe if I had read it closer to the rest of the series I would have enjoyed it more because I would have been more caught up in the 'feel' of the series, but as it was I found some of the characters and humour and 'super-River' coming up with every bright idea a bit wearing. The characters are still very amusing, and I like plenty of strong female characters - as female characters can be lacking completely in MM romance books - but this did mean that some male side characters were complete non-entities, like River's Dad, who barely gets a personality compared to his Mum. The story is engaging, but on the whole it's not particularly well written; it's badly paced, with the imminent danger completely ignored for several chapters in the middle while the alien sanctioning ceremony takes place (and oh my GOD do they make a MASSIVE deal about having to be abstinent for three whole days - you're horny, we get it, get over yourselves!!). The ceremony itself is strangely hyped-up although there's nothing that scary about it, and they're weirdly well-prepared for a ceremony nobody would tell them anything about? There's a lot of long digressions about their thoughts and feelings, everything is described in great detail as if worried the reader might miss something if it isn't explained in full. The ending was too much for me, too neatly tied to round off the immediate ending and into the future. I'm pleased to have concluded the series and it's fun on the whole, but this book wasn't the best of the series.

Good but I need the audiobook for this!

Surprisingly I struggled through reading this book even though I have loved this series. The first 50% dragged for me. I guess it didn’t stand out as its own book and had a much slower plot than I’m used to from the series. It’s still a strong addition to the series, it just didn’t excite me like the others. I, of course, loved all the characters and it was nice to be back in this universe and to continue getting answers. I’m going to hope an audiobook comes out narrated by the same narrator as the other books. I’ll definitely give it a listen and another chance. Sometimes I need to listen to a book to fully immerse myself into the story and Greg Boudreaux is one of my favorite narrators.

- series
- established couple
- Alllll the tentacles
- Alllll the aliens

It's already Book 4 in this series? When did that go so quickly?? I'm not going to lie, this is the one I've been waiting for since (not really a spoiler unless you haven't read the others first, in which case why on earth not? This is Book 4 and nobody starts a series on book 4. Go away and come back when you have and don't yell at me for this because I won't entertain your complaint) Kai proposed to River and he discovered there would be a sanctioning ceremony and it was all hush-hush. I NEEDED to know about the ceremony, dammit. I wasn't disappointed, the ceremony was as bonkers and emotional and just as I wanted it to be. River and Kai are G O A L S.

There's a whole lot going on in this book, with Nirblob stepping up (YAY), Layne Madison finally getting his just desserts, Kai's badass Grandma, long lost family finding their way together, alien invasion threats, oh and maybe a triple surprise on the horizon too. SO much happening here, I couldn't stop turning the pages to see what would happen next. I love this series so much but I do need that honeymoon tale. Don't think I've forgotten about Wilder and Mal and Benji too. I am hoping for their stories too but this is Kai and River finally finding their HEA and it's so well deserved. I loved this and I love the world Chloe has created here. I'm sure it's fun to play in, it's surely fun to read. Which is exactly what a good book should be.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

All the best things

This book surpassed my expectations and delivered something I put on instant reread (I’m in the middle of read #3). The cast of motley characters continues to become more vivid and fleshed out as the series continues and proves there is way more to someone than what is visible on the surface. The signature humor and utter sci fi geekiness is present in spades, layering over some rather deep insights on the nature of “humanity”. Also present is some rather significant story bits for River’s fictional Captain Starblade and Lord Vardox along with a new alien advice column from Dr. TEA.

Between family, the Sanctioning Ceremony, and imminent alien invasion, River and Kai have their hands and tentacles full. In the end, River’s many friendships help save the day and they get their own HEA as well as a not entirely surprising twist of fate. Three cheers to Nirblob who comes through for everyone in a really big way! Now to figure out which of the three other couples will get the next story and if there will be more Starblade and Vardox developments…

This is the fourth book in the Tentacular Tales series and it must be read in order. There is no way to follow or understand this book if you haven't read the earlier books first. This book, once again, focuses on Kai and River. The main focus is on the upcoming mysterious Iyaran Sanctioning Ceremony. And of course the possible hostile alien invasion. The book has the same sarcasm and sweetness of the earlier books. I enjoyed seeing how well Nirblob steps up to help the Alliance win the battle. The additional bonus of the letters form Spill the TEA: Trustworthy Earthling Advice is sure to put a smile on your face. I especially enjoyed the reference to Shephard's Pie. Of course there are a few surprises and twists waiting for you in the book. I hope we get to see more about the potential Mal/Benji relationship. As well as the Zamir/Wilder development. This is a great conclusion to the Kai and River story. I received a complementary advanced review copy of this book from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Fans of this series, will enjoy this book as well.

River is still the sweetest and funniest person who totally adores not only sci-fi but his own alien love Kai, who can be a bit grumpy with others but is a total smoochy care bear when it comes to River. These two wonderful men finally get to have their Iyaran Sanctioning Ceremony which is so beautifully heartfelt that I did have a few “aww” moments during it. I also totally cracked up at some of Rivers antics during this auspicious occasion!
So there’s plenty of drama and action as the Alliance awaits for and defends Earth from the invasion of the evil alien villains. This is perfectly balanced with the ongoing love story of Kai and River and their love for family and found family alike. With lots of feel good/LOL moments and the occasional super surprising twist added for good measure, this was an absolute pleasure to read. I loved how the loose ends were all tied up with a lovely bow and it kept me engaged from start to finish. I can’t wait to see what Chloe Archer comes up with next as they certainly know how to tell a story that grabs the readers attention.

All You Need is Alien Love
Tentacular Tales 4
By Chloe Archer

I’m not sure what I LOVE most about this series River’s shenanigans, Dr. Tea, or Captain Starblade & Lord Vardox. That should be the review. Enough said. 🤩

I adore Chloe’s fun books! That’s what reading her books feels like pure fun, adventure on another level, and you still get those happily ever after feels. The story within the story is enjoyable and honestly is worth being put in its own collection. I would love to read all of The Tentacular Tales of Captain Starblade in one sitting.

I hope there will be more Tentacular Tales. We have more to learn about Kai and River. I want to see how River’s relationship with his parents continues to grow and evolve and really I want more of Grandma Iris. My favorite absolute favorite things about this story is the movie and song references. I feel like Chloe and I must have grown up similarly, because I get those references and they make me laugh. Bottom line: must read series, do not drink while reading, you might choke while laughing, and enjoy the ride!

Well worth the wait

It's been over two years since the third book had me in stitches but I'll let Chloe off for making us wait so long.
Nothing in the series has changed, it's still funny as fuck, with out of this world characters, more cultural references than the proverbial stick will ever be shaken at, new acronyms and old friends and, of course, Starblade and Vardox.
There's just so much to enjoy; the characterisation, the inventions, the interactions between them all, the heart, the humour.... oh, Chloe's imagination is a thing of wonder and beauty.
I have to single out Nirblob who has been great but this time, really came into his own. What a magnificent brain that Lord Vardox wannabe unleashes here. I loved him and River together, a partnership made in heaven with a side of whoop-ass at the ready.
The Iyaran Sanctioning Ceremony wasn't at all what I expected but if anything, it was better. I loved it. Magic brownies for the win!
Next comes Mal and Benji's book but before that, there's the promise of a honeymoon novella. Epic.

River has a new blog(?), Dr. TEA. It's funny, full of advice for aliens, and a great way to get into chapters. But nothing takes the place of Captain Starblade and Lord Vardox. Never can get enough of them.
So, that mysterious Sanctioning Ceremony that Chloe Archer has been hinting at.... for evah! Finally here. It lived up to the hype and teases. Big time. So much else going on. Embarrassing and sassy relatives. ✅ Space Invasion. ✅ Loyal friends/family/found family.✅ ✅
River and Kai are adorable. Love the geekiness, the pop and sci-fi references. And soon, the results of Tentaculum Gestarium. Mal and Benji are still progressing at snail's pace. They need their HEA. Wilder and Nirblob need stories as well. So maybe this isn't farewell, even though Kai and River have their HEA.
Such a fun, quick read. Looking forward to where Archer takes us next.

LOVED IT! The intensity ratcheted up several notches, as did the puns, the pop culture sci-fi references, and the humor. River's so-crazy-they-usually-work plans came into play, as is his tendency. Friends and family cause trouble and come to the rescue, (not the same ones, obvs), life-changing revelations are made, selfish & selfless moves made by side characters, and of course, the Tentacular Tales of Captain Starblade continues to progress, too. In short, LOTS of wild & crazy stuff happens to and around and because of River & Kai, emotions are everywhere, definitely a roller coaster of a wild ride is encapsulated in this wonderfully zany sci-fi romance. I eagerly await our next glimpse into the lives of these characters we've come to love so much - I'll TRY to be patient. Love this series SO MUCH!!!

More River and Kai! More in love (if that's even possible), more adventures, more chaos and more to love with this series!
Definitely have to read the prior books, but that is not a hardship :)
Ms. Archer has built a delightfully intricate world of aliens, humans and 'fictional' characters -Vardox and Starblade.
Cleverly done with a setting in Vegas - where else can aliens blend in, lol? A good end to the overarching plot from books 1-3, though hopefully there will be more books in this world, say Mal and Benji?

Audio
This series has been such a pleasure to listen to. Greg Boudreaux took this series and made it his own. He has lovingly voiced the characters, portraying their highs/lows, emotions, humour with a range that is truly remarkable. It's been a pleasure to listen to him from the start of this tentacular journey!

This was an absolute ride! We finally got to learn what the Sanctioning Ceremony was all about. Although, they made it seem like it was a terrifying experience, I found it to be a really powerful and sweet ceremony. Our boy River is back to giving out great advice to aliens wanting to visit. Lord Vardox proves why he is the best "villian". And Norblob turns out to be the MVP. All in all this was a great ending to River and Kai's arc. I loved that we got to hear more about their hopes, dreams and fears. We got to see others step up and show how far their allegiance goes. We get more background into already established characters. This series has been such a fun read and I can't wait for more. Especially since we got a special surprise at the end battle.

All You Need Is Alien Love is the 4th book in the Tenkotacular Tales series. This series is best read in order as it follows the same couple and hsa a continuing story arc. We are back with River, Kai, and the rest of the gang for more shenanigans. The guys are getting ready for the Sactioning Ceremony but of course there is trouble they have to overcome as well. I loved this book so so much. I love the characters and world that Chloe Archer has built. This has become one of my all time favorite series. I'm keeping this review short because I don't want to reveal any spoilers, just know that lots of questions get answers in this book. I would definitely recommend this book and series as 5 star reads.

Gotta love tentacles

More from Chloe Archer about River and Kai now that they are human married there is a “Sanctioning Ceremony” from Kai’s side of the family to get through. Oh yeah and the threat of invasion, but who cares about that? Lol. Sorry, but this whole book is so funny that I find myself thinking of things in funny ways. There is so much more than just the base story of River and Kai. There are the tales of Captain Starblade, the TEA or Trustworthy Earthling Advice, all kinds of references to popular media stuff, River’s parents and more and more and more. Ms Archer mixes all of these together so well and you will probably find yourself just speeding through the pages like I did and then wanting to reread it to savor it like it should be. Tentacles forever!

Oh my freaking god this book was awesome. This is book 4 in the series and must be read in order as it features Kai and River throughout all four books. Kai and River are married from a human standpoint but they still need to complete the Sanctioning Ceremony that is an Iyaran tradition. As River says, they passed with flying colours. They also need to stop an alien invasion. That has been brewing for a while. Between River and Nirblob, annd the Alliance, they all came up with a plan to stop them. If I didn’t have to work, I would have read this book in one sitting. I cannot wait to see what happens next. Get these books, you will definitely not be disappointed.

I really love this series. I have never chuckled soo much while reading a series and book 4 is no different. River is just brilliantly funny and sassy and kai is just a marshmallow for river. This book had me right in the feels with all the romance and at the edge of my seat with the anticipation of the invasion and all i can say without giving spoilers is that i loved where the ending of the book went. I also love how this book subtly talks about diversity and inclusion and its quite thought provoking. I also loved dr tea and all the starblade and vardox bits. I wish they had their own book!… A brilliant read i would highly recommend and all i need now is a book about mal and benji!

This was the perfect conclusion to River and Kai’s story (for now)! Their love for each other shines throughout the book, bringing all the feels. Of course all their amazing family and friends (Nirblob especially) play prominent roles, and we get to know Grandma Iris the OG badass better. Be prepared for lots of laughs, gasps, tears, and love when reading this whirlwind story!

I can’t wait for more books in this universe! A lot of future romance stories were set up and I am here for all of them. Evan and Zion, Mal and Benji, and Zamir and you know who all deserve to find their happy ever afters but hopefully with a bit of adventure along the way.
