Author Christopher Robbins and illustrator Susanna Covelli’s Ocean Train is an interactive primer that teaches numbers and sea creature names to children, providing a colorful, educational, and toy-like learning experience that makes learning fun.
Ahoy! Take a dive under the sea with Ocean Train . With a yellow submarine engine, little nautical explorers will love this 56-inch fold-out train (perfect for playtime or room decor)! Printed on both sides with boldly colored underwater illustrations, the book includes a handy velcro clasp to keep everything snuggly shut when reading time is over.
Christopher Robbins began his career in journalism at the age of sixteen when he started writing jazz criticism for the Daily Telegraph. Since then he has written for numerous newspapers and magazines in Britain, Europe and the USA.
The Empress of Ireland won the Saga Award for wit, along with exceptional critical acclaim. In Search of Kazakhstan was short-listed for the Authors’ Club Best Travel Book Award 2008 in the UK and (under the title Apples Are From Kazakhstan) for the Best Travel Books of 2008 in the US. Air America, a worldwide bestseller when it was originally published, was made into a film starring Mel Gibson.
This board book folds out to be 56" long! The reader learns to count as we follow the ocean creatures on the train. There are seahorses, sharks, lobsters, sea turtles, lionfish, and a bunch more! And of course, the submarine pulls the train along while the children scuba dive in the ocean.
This is such a cute book! I just love the adorable illustrations and sweet fishy characters. It's colorful and full of interesting little details in the background of each scene. Both sides of the train are illustrated. The first side has all the information about different sea creatures as we count up our numbers. Then the other side shows the children scuba diving in beautiful underwater coral reefs with the sharks and sting rays and other fish.
This would be so much fun to read with a child, and teach a toddler how to count up to ten. Any kid would be crazy excited to play with this train and unfold all the pages!
Although the board book is sturdy and well-constructed, there is a possibility that little hands might tear the train at the hinges of each page where the structure is a little more vulnerable. But even the hinges are sturdy and thick. It would have to take a lot of damage before it could be torn, but hey, we all know how destructive toddlers can be. haha! Still I think this board book would hold up pretty well.

The shape and colorful design of OCEAN TRAIN will stir imagination and play in your child. In simple words and images, teach your child numbers one through ten. Words like “5 spiny lobsters scuttle and scurry.” Ask your child to point to the five lobsters on the train. Or “7 eagle rays swim with power.” Can your child locate the seven eagle rays?
Whether you are down on the floor moving the train around the room or curled up in a comfortable chair with your child on your lap, OCEAN TRAIN will provide hours of fun, education and entertainment. Author Christopher Robbins and artist Susanna Covelli have done an excellent job with this book to teach numbers and counting. I recommend it.
