Jack received this book secondhand from family. We had been reading a story each night, but then apparently, Grandie read it all to him in one day while Dada and I were gone. For the stories I read, he loved the cute animals and their silly antics and was maybe starting to figure out how the letters and their sounds make words together. But he also enjoyed counting the page numbers, too.
I got this book 13 years ago as a baby shower gift. Its heloed teach at least two children to read, and has entertained many more, from infants to early elementary. My children enjoyed the fold out of the pages, and the loved looking for the hidden duck. Will always recommend this book.
Synopsis:"Created in consultation with a language expert, the stories have been especially written to help your child learn to read. The stories not only take into account recent research on the most effective ways of teaching reading, but are also great fun. There's also a listen-along CD that brings the stories to life through charming readings. This exciting edition contains twelve titles from the popular Phonics Readers series. Included titles: Fat Cat on a Mat. Ted in a Red Bed. Big Pig on a Dig. Hen's Pens. Fox on a Box. Frog on a Log. Ted's Shed. Sam Sheep Can't Sleep. Shark in the Park. Toad Makes a Road. Goose on the Loose. Mouse Moves House."
My Review: I have had this book sitting on the shelf for a while and finally pulled it out. I don't know why I waited so long to start reading it with Munchkin. This is a great collection of stories that really young kids will enjoy and then also those who are starting to read will be able to participate in reading. It is full of easy words and rhymes and it also has interactive features like hidden ducks and flip the flaps that will keep kids engaged. We read one or two stories a night and finished it quickly, and immediately Munchkin wanted to start reading it again. We have not used the audio CD yet but will next time we are in the car for a while.
Ted and his friends go on twelve different adventures. They bring the reader along with them as they get into all sorts of predicaments. Each story has a recurring theme with a rhyming flow that makes it easy for early readers to read. Each story has little flaps on the pages to add dimension. The book comes with a cd of the stories being read.
My daughter is just learning to read and fell in love with this book. The illustrations are adorable and she loved the interaction of lifting the flaps. The stories have a humorous angle and she loves laughing at the antics of the animals. She is able to read the words and this had really boosted her confidence in reading. Definitely a book I would recommend when just starting to read.
*I purchased the book from an Usborne dealer. This isn't the exact picture of the book, since the book I own comes with a cd and 12 stories.
Fat cat on a mat, Ted in a red bed, Big pig on a dig, Hen's pens, Fox on a box, Frog on a log, Ted's shed, Sam sheep can't sleep, Shark in the park, Toad makes a road, Goose on the loose, Mouse moves house.
These are all approximately Guided Reading Level / Fountas and Pinnell levels C-D. The accompanying audio recording is a nice feature. My daughter enjoys listening to the CD and following along with the stories. The illustrations are cute and the stories are sweet and have silly, surprise endings.
I like the book but often the rhyming gets funky. This is a great story with 4 different chapters. Each page has a yellow duck to find. But I got stuck on page 36. It took a long time to find that duck. Overall, this is a pretty good book.
Some are just silly but most are cute and have an unexpected twist. Just a little different from some of the other barely above basic readers. Appreciated.
