Con este libro, Mankell cierra la trilogía de Mozambique, que comenzó con "El secreto del fuego", en la que la protagonista, Sofia, era una niña, y continuaba con "Jugar con fuego", con Sofia ya adolescente.
En esta ocasión Sofia ya es una mujer adulta, tiene 20 años, dos hijos y un tercero en camino, casada con Armando. Sigue viviendo en el poblado con su madre, mientras Armando trabaja en la ciudad y viene cada fin de semana. Sofia repasa su vida, las personas que han pasado por su vida y han muerto, sus hermanas Rosa y María, su padre... Su vida es pobre, pero los suyos no pasan hambre. Y cuando todo parece ir bien, un suceso aparentemente sin importancia le hace replantearse su vida entera.
La vida no es fácil para las mujeres en ninguna parte, pero en África una mujer pobre y mutilada (recordemos que Sofia perdió con diez años las dos piernas al pisar una mina) tiene pocas posibilidades de encontrar un marido, se hacer una familia, de ser feliz. El final es sobrecogedor.

November 25, 2022Eine faszinierende Geschichte über die 19. jährige, in Mosambik lebende Sofia, dessen bisheriges Leben von immer wiederkehrenden Schicksalsschlägen geprägt war und auch in diesem Buch bleibt. Durch diese Trilogie habe ich gelernt, alles, was ich habe, 100× mehr zu schätzen, als ich es bereits tue. ♥️♥️♥️

Det var en kort och lättläst serie, men den berörde. Kändes lite som om jag besökte min barndom (although, jag hade bara läst första då). Saken är då den att det var ganska så tydligt att det inte fanns något slut. Sofia trampar på en mina, måste anpassa sig. Boom slut. Okej.

Några år senare, Sofias man beter sig konstigt och farligt. Boom slut? Obviously not. Det må vara en trilogi men detta handlar om en verklig person. Om nu tre böcker släppts om Sofia som alla har väldigt tragiska handlingar, vad får mig då att tro att hennes liv helt plötsligt ska bli fint och lyckligt? När jag avslutade boken var min första tanke "what's next?"
Nu lät jag lite negativ. Jag tyckte verkligen om serien. Men det kändes inte riktigt som de hängde ihop som jag velat. Hence the plot holes. Aaah the plot holes. I denna bok störde jag mig på två stycken:
1) Sofias mamma Lydia har fött elva barn. Tre lever idag. Fyra har dött. Är min matte dålig eller har något blivit knasigt här?
2) Sofia har bott i sin by i hela sitt liv och aldrig lämnat den... Okej, i första boken flyr de sin by p g a banditer och de bosätter sig på ett nytt ställe. Jo men that makes sense... I guess.
I alla fall, trots de små sakerna så är serien helt klart läsvärd!

Wow, this book is something incredible, I have read Mankell because of Wallander (a book series I greatly enjoy) and his other detective books are great too. But this is a different Mankell, who writes about the lives of those displaced by war and poverty in Africa. He gives us a little glimpse in the life of Sofia, via 3 stories of decisive moments in her life. The first one where she has to flee her town-home because is being reided and everyone murdered, to find refuge on a scant town where maybe life can happen again just to step on a landmine, losing her sister and legs, the way Mankell writes about it it really makes you sad, to think so many lives can just go to hell in a moment for such a thing in the ground. And yet for Sofia it is not a path to selfdestruction, but to take life into her hands. The second another sad story where Sofia is to experience the suffering of AIDS via her sister. And on the third story the betrayal of her husband, yet Sofia is one to find a way to live. This book will make you cry, get angry, and find that happiness can be in so many little things around us. And the way Mankell writes this shows his command of storytelling, of character development. It does sucks you into this world, into Sofia’s life. Truly a great book.

To trzecia część „afrykańskiej trylogii” Mankella. Nie została nagrana w formie audiobooka. Tym razem sięgnąłem po ebooka w języku niemieckim. Ciekawe jest to, iż książki z tej trylogii jak na razie nie ukazały się w języku polskim. Trochę czasu mi zajęło sprawdzenie czy książka ukazała się w języku angielskim. Okazuje się że tak i nosi tytuł „Shadow of The Leopard”.
Po pięciu latach przerwy od napisania drugiego tomu tej serii Mankell postanowił napisać trzecią i ostatnią część. „Gniew ognia” czy „Cień Leoparda” (tak odpowiednio brzmią w polskim tłumaczeniu tytuły tej książki w języku niemieckim i angielskim) opatrzony jest krótkim wstępem samego autora. We wstępie autor wspomina, iż postać głównej bohaterki oparta jest na prawdziwej postaci oraz jej przeżyciach. Ciekawe jest też to, iż Mankell przed publikacją udostępnił „prawdziwej” Sofii książkę do przeczytania i prosił ją o opinie.
Ta książka to niesamowite świadectwo z życia zwykłej kobiety zamieszkującej w przedmieściach dużego miasta, prawdopodobnie Mozambiku. Jest to dokładna kontynuacja drugiego i pierwszego tomu afrykańskiej trylogii. Podobnie jak w przypadku drugiego tomu, trzeci tom zaczyna się mniej więcej pięć lat po wydarzeniach opisanych w poprzednim tomie. Sofia ma około 20 lat. Ma dwójkę dzieci, spodziewa się trzeciego dziecka. Prowadzi godne, ale skromne życie u boku ukochanego mężczyzny, który w tygodniu pracuje w mieście w warsztacie samochodowym, w domu jest tylko na weekendy. Matka Sofii, Lydia nadal żyje, pomaga Sofii w wychowywaniu jej dzieci.
Życie Sofii nie jest do końca sielanką. W tym tomie dowiadujemy się o jej problemach, których doświadcza jako dorosła kobieta. Nie będę zdradzał zbyt wiele, ale bardzo wzruszająca jest ta historia i uczy nas sporo pokory. Mankell napisał świetną książkę o życiu kobiety, o problemach z jakimś borykają się kobiety w krajach trzeciego świata. Mimo wielkiej tragedii jaka opisana jest w książce czerpałem sporo pozytywnej energii z tej lektury. Chwilami było mi bardzo żal Sofii. Z jednej strony książka ma happy end, zależy jednak z jakiej perspektywy się spojrzy na to, bo mimo wszystko dochodzi pod koniec do tragedii.
Chciałbym aby była czwarta cześć tej serii, bardzo ciekaw jestem dalszych losów Sofii oraz jej rodziny. Mankell jednak na tym tomie zamyka opowieść, jedynie możemy sami się domyśleć jak potoczyły się losy naszej bohaterki.
Szukając informacji na temat tej książki natrafił na podróżniczy blog który zawierał fotorelacje z Mozambiku. Dzięki temu jeszcze lepiej potrafiłem sobie wyobrazić miejsca w których żyła Sofia.
Ciekawe dla mnie jest też tłumaczenie tytułu na język angielski. Tytułowy Leopard pojawia, lub nie pojawia się w dwóch miejscach, jest tylko pobieżnie wspomniany. To wielka abstrakcja dla nas Europejczyków obawiać się tego dzielonego zwierzęcia które żyje na wolności w pobliżu domostw wiejskich w Mozambiku. W takich realia żyła Sofia oraz jej dzieci. W pewnym momencie musiała też ukryć się przed tym zwierzęciem i tą właśnie scenę angielskojęzyczny wydawca postanowił wykorzystać nadając tytuł w tym języku.
Bardzo dobrze wspominam chwile spędzone na czytaniu tej książki. Mam nadzieje że ukarze się polskie tłumaczenie.

El libro nos enseña el rudo entorno del país Mozambique, la pobreza extrema e injusticias que atraviesan sus habitantes, dándonos la oportunidad de tomar conciencia de lo que acaece fuera de las fronteras de nuestro respectivo país.

Fantastic book

I finally decided to pick up the last book in this trilogy and finally read it. I had to read this one in English because it was never translated but I liked it. I liked it more than I liked the second book anyways.
There are still some fantastical parts in this book but it's more realistic like the first one.
Sofia is now married with Armando but after he starts working in the city he starts cheating on her. She cannot swallow this even though her mother Lydia encourages her to forgive him and let him continue cheating because they are poor and need his money to survive. Sofia ends up kicking him out but he is acting suspicious. Finally one day he snaps and gets drunk, comes to her house in the middle of the night and takes her into the middle of nowhere and leaves her there because she won't take him back (though I have no idea why she went into the car with him when she kept saying that he was acting weirdly and suspiciously but okay). Eventually she forgives him and goes to find him in the city but she ends up witnessing his death. He stole a bike from some poor folks and they decide to lynch him by burning him alive in public.
The one thing that really bugged me is that at the end her mom implies that it's Sofia's fault because if she didn't kick him out after he cheated on her he wouldn't start stealing and going down the bad path - I didn't like that that was never addressed and that it was just glossed over like it was nothing.
The writing style is also really odd - it's weirdly simplistic at times and missing a lot of details but really detailed at other times. Though considering that it's written from her memories I guess that that's the reason for that.

Shadow of the Leopard by Henning Mankell is a continuous journey of the story, Secrets in the Fire. Sofia, once a young girl, was split from her family after being in war-torn Mozambique. She lost her father and sister during this battle, and not to mention her legs in an explosion. Ten years later, Sofia is now 20 and already has two children, with a third one on the way. She continues her journey of living in poverty throughout this story. Even with Sofia being so strong, she still has horrible problems that come her way. She struggles to figure out what her husband is doing after fleeing their town. Will she forgive him or move on?
I enjoyed reading this novel because of how true and inspiring Sofia's story is. This story really shows how much we take for granted. I can not imagine putting myself in Sophia's shoes, especially when she has lost family members. However, she remains strong which is incredible. I like how she puts her family first and never lets anything stop her from supporting her kids. There is so many people in this world today living in poverty and Sofia is just one of them. Her story continues to fascinate me after reading these novels. Her story put many things into perspective and I would recommend it to anyone who is living in poverty. Sofia's story really emphasizes on the fact that things will get better, you just have to believe in what is to come.

The final book in the trilogy. Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the others. Sofia is still a formidable women and surges forward through the various struggles she faces, however this installment felt rushed, there wasn’t the depth of emotion or the existential searching that I had come to expect from the first two books. Enjoyable, but not the standard I expected.

A very nice book and a very nice closure to the trilogy. This book has a lot of action and unexpected events, Sofia is now grown up and has to deal with adult stuff. The boom has a somewhat happy ending even though the events towards the end aren’t happy. Great read and great series overall.

After Armando having an affair and spending money on new clothes while their family's struggling with money, she's had enough. Sofia is kicking him out. But this choice has a bigger impact than she could imagine.
This is the last book in Henning Mankell's trilogy about Sofia. Yet again, this book would have gotten a better grade if it was written better. Sometimes it is hard to follow, and some scenes and situations are very poor in details, and could have been worked with more to give the book some more life. But however, it is a great story and I would recommend the trilogy to anyone who's interested.

August 12, 2011Llegue por casualidad a esta novedad de Mankell (novedad porque no es su estilo) y me asombró la capacidad para cambiar de estilo y desarrollar esta historia: una niña que vive en Mozambique, como tantas tiene que haber allí, con sus penurias y sus innumerables dificultades, pero sin caer en la dramatización. Un bonito hallazgo.

There is preface in this book where Mankell states: "In the books about Sophia I mix truths and invention. What I describe has happened in reality, but not exactly in that way." I wonder if, in particular, the ending is one of Sophie's realities. I would hope that it wasn't. Nevertheless, it remains someone's, maybe many someone's. Such a sad thought.
