A new start… When Danni Carter moves to Cornwall from London, she hopes it will be the fresh start she so desperately needs. She’s nervous, but hopefully the change of scene will help her to finally forget her feelings for Lucas Newman, a man she can never be with, because he’s already engaged to Danni’s best friend, Esther. An Impossible Dilemma… But when Lucas and Esther decide to follow Danni to Cornwall, and both announce they will be working with her at the new St Piran’s hospital, Danni is thrown into turmoil again. She can’t lose Esther, but being near Lucas is getting harder to deal with. Will she have to give up her new life before it’s even started? A chance to start again? Throwing herself into work, Danni finds herself drawn to new patient, Connie Berrycloth, a woman Danni knows has dark secrets of her own. Secrets that are about to be revealed…. As the two women form a friendship, Danni begins to realise that letting go of her dreams might be the only way of holding on to the people she loves. I’ve long been a fan of Jo’s writing and was looking forward to reading this. Welcome to the Cornish Country Hospital is the first in a new series, published by Boldwood Books (22 November 2023) and is available in ebook (including Kindle Unlimited), audio and paperback.
Set in Cornwall, Welcome to the Cornish Country Hospital introduces Danni Carter, an A&E trauma doctor who moves from London to Port Kara and back to the coastal cottage that holds so many happy childhood memories of her late father. She is also trying to put distance between herself, Esther and Lucas. Esther is her best friend however Danni has secretly been in love with Lucas, now Esther’s fiancé for years. Her hopes for a new start are dashed however when they both follow her to Cornwall – and to the same hospital, St Piran’s.
Danni was a very likeable, capable and engaging character, even if her taste in men seemed questionable at times. I did feel sympathy for her when instead of her fresh start, she faced heartache on a daily basis working with Lucas. Esther was a joy of a best friend and I could understand why Danni was torn between following her heart and protecting their long standing friendship. Esther and her family were such a strong support for Danni and making the wrong decision would have devastating consequences.
Danni is not the only character with a secret, supporting characters such as Connie play a big part in the story and alongside the romance element, which is very gently dealt with, there is plenty of drama and difficult decisions to be made. Hospital volunteer and former midwife Gwen is on hand to offer advice but will her wise words be of help?
I always enjoy Jo’s books, her characters are so well written and there is always a storyline that has depth and emotion. I know this is the first in a series and I’m hoping that a future book will conclude the situation in respect of one character. I shall certainly be reading more, the Cornish location is fabulous, and the hospital setting, together with the ups and downs of friendships and relationships felt authentic. I can’t wait to see what happens next at St Piran’s.
We are introduced to Danni as our main character in this warm and welcoming new series after the midwife series. The series has a hospital setting. I wasn't sure how a hospital setting would be with all that could possibly happen there, good and bad but the start of the series is warm and welcoming. Danni Carte is desperately need of a new start, so she takes herself off to London from Cornwall to get away from the memory of her breakup with Lucas. To make things worse her new hospital job she's started at as her calming escape now has Lucas and her bestie Esther there working as well. Yes, Esther who is now in a relationship with her ex-Lucas. So much for a new start away from it all. She doesn't want to lose her friendship with her bestie but how can she cope with being by her ex constantly and working with him. I'll admit, this would be a really tricky situation, working with your ex who is now going out with your best friend. That's a situation best left alone in my opinion. As Danni throws herself into her work, she finds herself drawn towards the friendship of a long-term patient who has a dark secret of her own. I was drawn to this series and rooting for the characters. Drama, friendships tested, secrets revealed, and romance thrown in for good measure. I enjoyed the character development and the strong story line. I'll be continuing this series.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
For Danni, it’s a difficult decision when she leaves London to work as an A&E doctor at the new hospital in St Piran’s – while it’s good to be living in a place her late father loved so much, she needs to build a new life away from everything that’s familiar. Her friendship with Esther was a really special one, but very much tested by her feelings for surgeon Lucas – but he’s now engaged to Esther, and she has to allow them to find happiness together. The fresh start doesn’t work out as she hopes – they both follow her to Cornwall, working at the same hospital, and she faces the difficult decision of what she needs to do next. Which is more important to her? Should she move once more to keep her relationship with Esther, or give in to her attraction to Lucas with all the devastation that would cause?
Danni’s agonising decision plays out against the backdrop of day-to-day life at the hospital, with glimpses into the lives of the other staff members and the patients who find themselves under their care – and I’m delighted to report that a particular favourite (as inappropriate as ever, but every bit as warm and lovely) from the Midwives series is to be found helping out in the shop and pushing the refreshment trolley, and there are cameo appearances from others. But the main supporting story is Connie’s, injured in an accident while visiting the area – she has a poignant and deeply hidden secret, and Danni becomes increasingly involved in her life as her full story slowly unfolds.
Both stories are tremendously engaging, with that special emotional touch that always distinguishes the author’s lovely writing. There’s a strong focus on friendship, beautifully handled – and on family too, with Danni having found the kind of support from Esther’s parents that she no longer had, adding an additional layer to everything she’s risking with Lucas’ unsettling presence. And Connie’s story explores that theme of family further – with the hope of a happy ending, but a particularly difficult journey before that looks remotely possible. And there’s romance too, really well done – laced with difficult echoes of the past for Connie, but from a wholly unexpected direction for Danni.
I loved this book – while there’s anguish and heartbreak along the way, the whole story is uplifting, heartwarming and beautifully written. The hospital setting is well-researched and so well drawn, but so is the wider Cornish setting – I loved Danni’s clifftop walks with her dog, and spotting the seals on the rocks was a particularly special moment. And the characterisation is so excellent – developed throughout the book, as both women feel their way into an uncertain future and search for a path that will bring them happiness. This is a series I’m going to really enjoy – this book is the most perfect introduction, and highly recommended to all.
i’m stuck between 3 or 4 stars for this book so i’ll just go with 3.75.
this book was so greys anatomy but UK based coated. i loved reading how danni would deal with emergency trauma calls to A&E, especially the main one leading to her meeting the other main character in this book connie. although, some aspects of this book was very repetitive and what annoyed me was the main miscommunication trope both characters had with other characters. how are you not telling your bestfriend about something that’s been bothering you for 7 years??? i don’t really know how danni kept that from esther and how esther didn’t really call her out for it. lucas… what a manipulative narcissist honestly. i liked all the mini side characters in this book, aiden, gwen and charlie seemed so good to be true bless him.
the ending was a bit underwhelming, i thought we would find out more about connie’s relationship with richard and charlie. this book felt more 60% danni & 40% connie and even though their lives certainly intertwined a bit more i wish we got to see into that.
for the greys anatomy feel, i’ll definitely be reading the second book in this series. & i believe it’s esther’s story next so can’t wait to find out more.
(also makes me really want to visit cornwall and loved the map of the hospital at the beginning - so so smart!)
I was unfamiliar with this author but liked the idea of a hospital being central to the story. While parts do take place within the hospital and emergency scenarios I found much more to the story. While yes, some might call it " romance" based I thought it was more complex. Strong female friendship, lost love, families, manipulation and much more. I also loved the coastal location so well described I thought I was walking there too. I'm now on to the 2nd in the series.
This wholesome book was like a warm hug; focusing on community, found family, and strong friendships set in the English countryside. Just a feel-good read. Looking forward to going back to Cornwall with these characters in the next book.
Thank you #NetGalley, the brilliant author and the wonderful publisher for this gem❤
📚Thoughts&Opinions: I would love to say to Jo Bartlett that this work is really amazing. This book transported me straight to the world of Port Kara! It's like living and breathing alongside these captivating characters.
This book is giving The Good Doctor vibes🤭. Perfectly built characters and I love Charlie the most(Team charlie all the way❤💃). In this novel, there is a combination of medicine, love, family, friends, intriguing secrets and secret affairs and a dash of romantic turmoils all mashed up together to create this beautiful story, I can't wait for the next book in the series. 🏖🏖
💔 Connie&Richard- 40 years of hiding their love 😥
💞 Esther&Dannie- Their friendship is an absolute treasure. I yearn for a friend who cherishes me as Esther does Dannie. But I this isn't about me; back to the book! 😩📚
💔 Esther&Lucas -was there ever love in this ship😒
💔 Dannie&Lucas- Lucas just needed someone to rub his ego and I am happy Dannie didn't push her luck with him.
💑 Dannie&Charlie- just the perfect pair, oh a love story with dogs🤭
i enjoyed this book so much. i literally ate this uppppp. it really did give me a greys anatomy feel. i loved the entire concept. lucas is so so foul. like omg i can’t believe a man like that came in between danni & esther. i love that we also got to know side characters, that’s what gives it so much of a greys anatomy feel to me. this book wasn’t only about danni & connie. i’m also so happy that connie & richard had the chance to live their love story. i’m so excited to read the second book bc esther deserves SOOO much better. i also feel like it would’ve been nice to see more of esther’s reaction to the danni & lucas debacle. i’m glad that they made up, but i feel like we didn’t really get to see a lot of esther’s anger. she had a real reason to be angry at both of them. overall, an amazing read! i truly loved it
Danni transfers to a hospital in Cornwall for a fresh start, however is dismayed when her best friend Esther and her fiancee also follow her there. This is the start of secrets, lies and possible new beginnings. This story works well on many levels. There is the hospital side, which shows some of the strains that they work under that covers the drama, secrets from many years before, which adds mystery, plus romance of course. Add the setting of glorious Cornwall, a touch of hope and this was a book that I definitely enjoyed.
I'm really not into non-fantasy books with romance as a sub sub sub plot, especially with the "steal your bff's man" trope 🤓 the vibe feels very cute and cozy if you're into hospital dramas! lord knows I'm obsessed with greys anatomy and even I couldn't make it through. the cover slaps tho I haven't seen one this cute in a while
Very good! These characters are perfect and their experiences in and out of the Cornish Country Hospital were so fun to read I didn't want to put the book down. I look forward to continuing the series. I can't wait to see who checks into the hospital next. Happy Reading!
Lost some interest towards the end, when the story shifted away from the hospital/medical drama and more towards your standard romance plot. Would be interested in the sequel.
I really loved this book (listened to the audiobook). This was a heartwarming story filled with many shocking twists, which I didn’t expect from a romance. But it made it so much more enjoyable!
A new series from Jo Bartlett is definitely something to look forward to. She has a way of writing such relatable characters and the new setting of the country hospital is perfect for introducing Danni and Esther. As always, Jo has written a wonderfully warm-hearted story full of emotion and I loved the relationship between Danni and Esther. Reintroducing Gwen was a nice tough and I’m hoping she’ll make regular appearances in the new series to give everyone that often needed pickmeup.
My Interest I’ve enjoyed the books I’ve read in Jo Bartlett’s Cornish Midwife series, so…..in need, as always, of an audio for my commute I found this new series of hers. (I will link my reviews of her other books at the bottom of this post). I really liked the sound of this one!
The Story Now a real doctor, Danni settles in Cornwall with her Basset Hound, Brenda, to start her career. Her best friend, Esther and Esther’s fiancé Lucas also settle in at the same hospital. Danni has had feelings for Lucas and has even wished Esther would give him up so she could have him. But then she is called to the scene of a bus crash and her career begins in earnest. A patient from the bus gives her a letter to pass on in case she dies, but lives and needs it back. Then there’s a handsome writer named Charlie with a Labrador named Maggie and a farmer named Richard. How do they all fit into the story? Will Danni derail her career over Lucas? Or ruin her friendship with Esther? And what do “bin bags” [trash bags] full of stuff flying into the road have to do with the story?
My Thoughts Who knew ER docs had so much time for intrigue! I really liked Danni, but Lucas made my stomach turn from the start. Charlie–who wouldn’t want Charlie and Trevor (no spoilers). Connie’s story was hard for me–I’m a Mom through adoption. I totally support adopted “children” of whatever age knowing where they are from and who made them and birthed them, but on my side it creates tremendous anxiety. That part of the story was rough for me. But this is a Boldwood Book! A feel good! And, in the end it was just that.
As always, Jo Bartlett creates a warm, enveloping but mostly believable workplace and community populated with people you’d want to know.
I look forward to book two of this new series this summer.
My Verdict 3.5 I listened to the audio version of this book.
This is a light-hearted romantic novel, the first book in a new series set is lovely Cornwall. Although I liked the setting and the main plot, I found the writing repetitive and the characters sugar coated. Come on, there's one bad guy in the entire book, and everyone else is kind, sensitive, understanding, friendly, honest, supportive, successful... This just felt so unreal.
I don't think this series will be for me, but those who liked Jo Bartlett's Cornish Midwife series will most certainly enjoy this too.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an ARC.
Okay, so this was a really solid four star read for me and exactly the kind of palate cleanser I needed after all the heavy gothic horror and emotional devastation I have been reading lately. I listened to this on audiobook and I do think that helped because these sorts of cosy books work really well in audio form.
I have read Jo Bartlett’s Cornish Midwife series before and absolutely loved it, so I was quite excited going into this one. I will say though, for probably the first three hours or so, I was not completely sold. I kept thinking, where exactly are we going with this? Some of it felt a little bit unbelievable and overly cosy in that way these books sometimes can. But then somewhere along the line I just got really into it and ended up genuinely enjoying myself.
What I think Jo Bartlett does really well is weave heavier emotional themes into these very comforting, cosy settings. On the surface this is absolutely a cup of tea and blanket kind of read, but underneath that there is a lot about grief, loneliness, childhood trauma, second chances and trying to rebuild yourself when life has not gone the way you thought it would.
Dani as a character really grew on me. There were definitely moments where I felt frustrated with the way she handled things, but honestly, when you look at what she has been through and the emotional situation she is stuck in, I actually think most people would probably react similarly. She is messy and a little bit lost and trying to figure herself out, and I liked that she felt flawed in a believable way.
The actual premise is quite dramatic. Dani moves to Cornwall because she is in love with her best friend’s fiancé and is essentially trying to run away from the whole situation and start fresh. Then they follow her there, which honestly annoyed me so much. Let the woman breathe for five minutes please. Esther in particular drove me mad throughout this entire book. Dani deserved a much better best friend. Esther felt incredibly selfish and there were multiple moments where she was genuinely horrible under the guise of joking around. I just found myself getting increasingly irritated with her as the story went on.
I also was not massively attached to Aiden, although I adored Connie and Charlie. Lucas was awful but at least you are clearly supposed to dislike him, whereas Esther just frustrated me because I do not think the book fully acknowledged how cruel she could actually be.
The Cornwall setting was lovely though. Jo Bartlett always writes these cosy seaside communities really well and it absolutely made me want to visit. Especially with the heatwave we are currently having in the UK, this felt like the perfect summery comfort read. I actually preferred the setting and atmosphere of the Cornish Midwife series overall, but I still really enjoyed the hospital community in this one.
The romance was sweet and definitely good enough to make me interested in continuing the series. And honestly, despite me saying the plot itself was not always the strongest or most believable thing in the world, I still found it really enjoyable to listen to. It is one of those books where the comfort and emotional warmth matter more than having an especially intricate storyline.
Overall, this was just a genuinely lovely read. Emotional without being too heavy, cosy without being completely shallow, and exactly the sort of book I needed at the time. Definitely worth picking up if you like comforting contemporary fiction with seaside settings, found family vibes and a little bit of emotional depth hidden underneath all the cosy charm.
*ARC in exchange for an honest review* Actual rating: 4⭐️ (no spice, closed door romance) "Welcome to the Cornish Country Hospital " is already out for more than a month, and now I am annoyed with myself I didn't pick it up sooner.
This book is about Danni who wants to have a fresh start by moving to Cornwall after secretly being in love with Esther's fiancée Lucas for years, and wanting to outrun the constant temptation. Only to realise that Lucas and Esther followed her and even got jobs at the same hospital as her. Danni has to face the challenge and find a way to get over him, because hurting her best friend Esther isn't an option.
Danni, what a caring and intelligent character. I loved that she is flawed, but in such a realistic manner. Danni is a lovely person who wants to do right by everyone and puts the happiness of others way too easily before her own. I felt with her and her inner turmoil and cherished her happy moments.
I loved the bond Esther and Danni have; they are like sisters to each other. Esther seems like such a genuine and loving person too, you could really feel the love these characters have for each other.
Now I need to mention Connie. Without her, the story would not have been complete. She is the patient Danni connects with and who will be playing quite an important role. Her story reminded me of "Letters to Juliet" and I was all for it.
And lastly, without spoiling it for you, I adored HIM. I couldn't stop smiling and grinning with all these adorable moments. There were a lot of "awwws" involved and I caught myself pinning after a endearing yet fictional character.
And that setting?! Perfect! I loved every aspect of it; the hospital setting, the cases and on the other hand the lavish nature setting. I had such a beautiful scenery in my head.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story. Although it had a slow start, I couldn't put the book down once the pace picked up and everything fell into place. This was such a sweet and charming story. The plot was a little predictable but I don't think a lot of people read this genre for plots and twists ;)
You should definitely pick it up if you like cute romances and want an easy read with a hospital setting (maybe Grey's anatomy style) and beautifully written nature scenes on top.
*I received a free ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review*
Having been a huge fan of Jo Bartlett's Cornish Midwives series I was so excited for a new medical series from her (and even more excited when I realized there would be some cameos from my favorite midwives characters - it was especially nice to see that Gwen has not changed at all). I liked Danni right from the beginning and understood her desire for a fresh start, too bad her best friend and unrequited love decided to crash in on her new life, and just as she was finally starting to settle in and find her bearings again. I was so glad when she started to see in Lucas what so many others already had - that he was a grade A ass. It helped that she had met Charlie who was the complete opposite and showed her what it really meant to be loved and respected by someone other than her brother and best friend. On the topic of Charlie, he may have been a little too good to be true but I'm okay with that because Danni deserved to have someone like him in her life. I was a little disappointed in his reaction to Danni's admission that she had once been in love (or thought herself to be in love) with Lucas - he didn't even really give her the chance to explain things from her side. I guess that at least showed he wasn't perfect either. I was also disappointed with Esther's reaction to Danni when she tried to tell her about what was going on with Lucas. They were supposed to be best friends and the fact that she immediately backed Lucas and accused Danni of trying to ruin the wedding was just cruel. The whole Lucas drama isn't fully wrapped up by the end so I'm really hoping we get to see him get what he deserves in a later book. The side story involving Connie was also really interesting and I was glad that it wasn't an immediate happy ever after for her otherwise it would have been too unrealistic even for a fan of romance novels. There also a lot of great medical scenes here, much like the birthing scenes we got in Cornish Midwives. Overall, this is a great start to the series and I can't wait to see what the author has in store for us.
"Welcome To The Cornish Country Hospital" by Jo Bartlett is a heartwarming tale set in the idyllic landscapes of Cornwall, where love and healing intertwine. This charming novel immerses readers in the world of the Cornish Country Hospital, a place that becomes not only a backdrop for medical drama but also a hub for unexpected connections and romance.
The story follows the journey of Emma Browning, a nurse with a compassionate heart and a desire to make a difference. As she navigates the challenges of her professional life, the reader is treated to a vivid depiction of the hospital's daily workings and the tight-knit community it serves. Bartlett's attention to detail and her background in nursing bring authenticity to the medical aspects of the narrative.
The characters in the novel are wonderfully crafted, each with their own struggles, dreams, and quirks. The author skillfully weaves their stories together, creating a tapestry of relationships that is both heartening and relatable. Emma's journey, both in her career and personal life, forms the emotional core of the narrative, and readers will find themselves rooting for her success and happiness.
The Cornish setting adds a layer of charm to the story, and Bartlett's descriptive prose paints a vivid picture of the coastal beauty and the community spirit. The pacing is well-balanced, and the narrative unfolds seamlessly, keeping the reader engaged from beginning to end.
Romance blossoms against the backdrop of medical challenges, adding depth and emotional resonance to the plot. The relationships that develop feel authentic, and the tender moments are portrayed with sensitivity. The novel explores themes of love, resilience, and the impact of community support in times of need.
"Welcome To The Cornish Country Hospital" is a delightful blend of medical drama and romance that captures the essence of healing, both physically and emotionally. Jo Bartlett's storytelling prowess shines through, making this novel a captivating and uplifting read. For those who enjoy heartwarming stories set in picturesque locales, this book is a delightful prescription for the soul.
It’s such a delight to open a new book by a favourite author and Welcome to the Cornish Country Hospital certainly gets this new series off to a splendid start as not only are we back in Cornwall, an area the author describes so well, but we also have a new cast of characters to get to know, with maybe a few familiar faces thrown in for good measure.
Danni Carter has taken up a position as an A&E doctor at St Piran’s hospital in Cornwall where her professionalism and empathy make her one of the most popular doctors in the accident and emergency unit. Danni loves her new life and having moved from London she now is starting to call Cornwall home. That is, until the arrival of her friends, Esther and Lucas who will also be working at the hospital, all should be well but Danni is keeping a huge secret from Esther and with one secret leading to another, Danni gets inadvertently drawn into the plight of one of her patients who also has a long held secret which will have far reaching repercussions.
This is such a lovely story and although it touches on some rather serious topics there is never a moment when the story doesn’t pull you in and pretty soon I was so invested in the lives of all the characters I found I couldn’t put the book down. Most of the characters are lovely and bring such a sense of joy to the to the story however, there is one in particular who I couldn’t help but dislike and really hoped that they would get their just deserts.
Filled with the warmth of friendship, the burden of hidden secrets and the joy of discovering love in unexpected places, this imagined Cornish town comes wonderfully alive, whether it be waiting in a cubicle at St Piran’s A&E unit , out on the wards with Doctor Danni, or even walking along the coastal path watching for baby seal pups, there is so much to enjoy and I really can’t wait to pay another visit to the Cornish Country Hospital just as soon as this talented author takes us there.
⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ Three and a half stars rounded up to four. I read this one and then the second book as I had gotten that one as an ARC and needed to get it read. I didn’t one to read them out of order. This book was definitely better in my opinion than the second book. I liked Danni and her relationship with Charlie. I liked the corresponding storyline from Colleen’s POV. Colleen came into the hospital after an accident and she gave Danni a letter to look after and told her to deliver it to a man called Richard if she died. We then had the mystery of this letter, until Colleen finally was ok and revealed to Danni what it was all about. It was a really sweet redemption arc. What caused me to mark this book down was the annoying side story of how Danni had been “in love” with her best friend Esther‘s fiancé for years. Danni discovered that he was cheating on Esther and after much soul searching, decided to tell her friend before the wedding. Esther then said some awful things to her and straight up believed her fiancé’s lies. This completely pissed me off, especially as Danni meekly took this as her due punishment. Punishment for what? One could ask. Well Danni somehow believed she deserved it because she should have been able to control her feelings, something that is well known we can’t do. Honestly. 🤦🏼♀️ So yeah that was super annoying. It all did get resolved at least, which is where this book got its rounded up rating instead of being rounded down to 3. I really enjoyed the side characters in the story too, they really added to the story and I enjoyed every scene they were in. All in all, this was an enjoyable read (listen) and I will be reading more by Jo Bartlett based on this.
Welcome to the Cornish Country Hospital is written by Jo Bartlett. This is the first book that I have read by this author, and it will not be my last. While I am from the US - I appreciated all the detail that the author put in of Cornish coast of Port Kara. I felt with her descriptions I was watching everything unfold in front of me.
Danni, is a doctor consultant in the A&E department. She has been in love with her best friends fiance for as long as she can remember. So much so, that she moves from London and accepts a job at tiny Cornish Country Hospital. She settles into her new life thinking that she will finally be free of her thoughts of Lucas. After all, Esther is more like a sister to her.
However, Lucas and Esther decide to also move to the country side. Danni is not happy about this. She throws herself into her work, and during a major catastrophe she meets Connie. Connie has secrets of her own. Danni is drawn to Connie, and she helps her work through some past trauma, experiences and they form a friendship.
Things I loved about this book: The characters, they are funny and real feeling. The whole staff at the hospital seems to have their secrets and I loved how deeply involved in their lives I was able to get. I also loved the setting. As stated above the author has done a great job with her descriptions.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Rachel's Random Resources for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoguhts are my own.
I am so glad that I made the decision to read this first book in a new series. I love watching hospital dramas on the television. I am certainly craving a new series of Grey’s Anatomy – I digress. Learning about Danni’s impossible situation was heartbreaking. To be caught in a love triangle would be devastating, especially when the other parts of the triangle were your closest friends. Danni is a great character who carried the task of leading the story beautifully. Her inner turmoil at being faced with the return of the reason she left London and then becoming embroiled in Connie’s dilemma was tangible. Danni’s story arc was excellently delivered, and I found her character to be completely relatable. I can only imagine how I would react to her predicament but would like to think that I could be as dignified in my actions. I certainly can’t imagine being any different. Connie was a particularly interesting addition to the story and following her from the point of first appearance to unravelling her secrets was wholly satisfying. As for Lucas, he was necessary to the story but someone that I just didn’t take to. The seemingly effortless way that the story built was remarkable and one of the many reasons why I will definitely be reading the rest of this series, as it is released. I’m so pleased that I decided to read this book and cannot recommend it highly enough.
Welcome to The Cornish Country Hospital is the first in a brand new series from bestselling author Jo Bartlett. I fell in love with the authors books after discovering The Cornish Midwife series.
Danni Carter is looking for a fresh start after moving from London to Cornwall. She’s hoping to forget her feelings for Lucas Newman, a man she can never be with, because he’s engaged to Danni’s best friend Esther. But Lucas and Esther decide to follow Danni to Cornwall, and announce they will be working with her at the new St Piran’s hospital. Will she have to give up her new life before it’s even started?
Danni finds herself drawn to new patient, Connie Berrycloth, a woman who has secrets of her own. But secrets from both women will eventually be revealed…
The Friendship and love make this a heartwarming read. Danni finds it difficult to start over and the reader experiences many emotions through Danni and Esther’s viewpoints.
Then there is hospital patient Connie revealing secrets of her past to Danni. Can both women learn from their mistakes and find their own happy ending?
Wonderful characters and full of Jo’s signature warmth. I can’t wait to read more of this series.
Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the arc I received in exchange for my honest opinion.
Welcome to the Cornish Country Hospital Danni lost her father when she was young and his death broke her family. She developed a wonderful friendship with Esther at university but she also falls in love with Esther’s boyfriend then fiancé. She does not want to hurt Esther but is having trouble not acting on her feelings so she takes a job in Cornwall. She is starting to enjoy her new life when Esther and Lucas follow her to the same hospital. She will be seeing them everyday. She doesn’t know how she can resist Lucas. She bonds with a woman whom she saved from a bus wreck who also has a secret. I have to say that Lucas is really clueless or he wants both women. As much as I love the characters, if he is aware of Dani’s feelings then he doesn’t deserve either woman. For me this book started slowly in regard to the romance. I wasn’t sure I was going to be happy with the outcome if Danni and Lucas got together. How could she keep her friendship with Esther if that happens. I started this review as I was reading it and have decided to keep what I wrote. I enjoy the author’s writing style. She makes the characters come alive and she has great side characters, too. You will have to read it to find out if there is a HEA.
