V Is for Vulnerable: Life Outside the Comfort Zone

Rate this book
V is for Vulnerable by Seth Godin is a full-color ABC book for grown-ups, with a powerful message about doing great work. V is for Vulnerable looks and feels like a classic picture book. But it's not for kids, it's for hardworking adults.

It highlights twenty-six of Seth Godin's principles about treating your work as a form of art, with illustrations by acclaimed cartoonist Hugh MacLeod. A A is for Anxiety, which is experiencing failure in advance. Tell yourself enough vivid stories about the worst possible outcome and you'll soon come to believe them. Worry is not preparation, and anxiety doesn't make you better. F is for Feedback, which can be either a crutch or a weapon. Use it to make your work smaller, safer, and more likely to please everyone (and fail in the long run). Or use it as a lever to further push you to embrace what you fear and what you're capable of.

This is unlike any previous Godin book and makes a great gift, both for loyal fans and those who've never read him before. Seth Godin is the author of thirteen international bestsellers that have changed the way people think about marketing, the ways ideas spread, leadership and change including Permission Marketing, Purple Cow, All Marketers are Liars, The Dip and Tribes. He is the CEO of Squidoo.com and a very popular lecturer. His blog, www.sethgodin.typepad.com, is the most influential business blog in the world, and consistently one of the 100 most popular blogs on any subject.

Just the book for your inner child! A book that will have you looking deeper into that inner landscape that we all have to try to navigate! Seth Godin has a very 'calming' commonsense way of helping readers see issues from a slightly different perspective. I have read several of his books and always find this refreshing and helpful.

I am moved!!!

This book is a special little gem. The simple illustrations and layout mask its profound message. In the beginning it says, "Read this book out loud to someone you care about". So Chris (husband) and I took turns reading each page. We both really loved it. This book perfectly captures the spirit of the one who gave it to me, which makes me love it even more. And I'm so glad that I own a copy, because I'll definitely want to re-read it (and steal quotes for various things such as graduation cards and what-not!).

Effort isn't the point, impact is. If you solve the problem in three seconds but have the guts to share it with me, it's still art. And if you move ten thousand pounds of granite but the result doesn't connect with me, I'm sorry for your calluses, but you haven't made art, at least not for me.

This book makes art for me. Thank you to my friend who gave me this special and meaningful book. You knew I'd love it and I do! xoxoxo

I have this peculiar and superstitious notion that books seek you out sometimes when you really need them. My son ran up to me earlier today at the American Book Center and pretty much forced me to sit down and read this book to him. I think it took a little extra prompting because usually I wouldn't be caught dead with something that even remotely smelled like self-help. But this book hit me at the right second of my life, and it was glorious. That's why I believe there is something bigger, brighter and better than myself out there. And it may well be my kid.

This is a very powerful little book.

Seth draws his inspiration for this little gem from Dr Seuss, who taught him to read. We're told this in the shot introduction that concludes with:

" I want you to do what you've you're meant to do, what we're all meant to do, which is the hard work of creating art.

The artist wonders, `How can I break this?' and `Is it interesting?'

Go break something."

This is an "ABC book for Grown-ups". Two pages for each letter (except LMNO) illustrated in a wacky irreverent manner by Hugh MacLeod.

Each letter reflects a principle for treating work as a form of art.

One of my favourites is:

"E is Effort isn't the point, impact is. If you solve the problem in three seconds but have the guts to share it with me, it's still art. And if you move ten thousand pounds of granite but the result doesn't connect with me, I'm sorry for your calluses, but you haven't made art, at least not art for me."

BAM.

Those of us nearing middle-age, yes, yes, alright, in middle-age, tend to preach the `hard work mantra': `no one gets anywhere in life without working hard.' This riles my almost twenty year old son, who is a musician. He doesn't want to be like me, slaving away at something for years and years. He wants to make an impact with his music.

Thanks Seth, I think I better understand where my son is coming from now. Slave away at something that makes an impact. Not for personal glory, but as a reflection of your heart, using our gifting.

And then there is this:

"V is for Vulnerable, which is the only way we can feel when we truly share the art we've made. When we share it, when we connect, we have shifted all the power and made ourselves naked in front of the person we've given the gift of our art to."

I so needed to read that. In six weeks, my debut novel releases to the world and I've struggled to publically share, because of the fear of being naked.

But now I get it. That's part of what being an artist involves.

Funny, my son already gets this as he heads out to busk in front of the shopping masses.

This thin manifesto that takes all of about three minutes to read was just what I needed at this stage of my life.

Thank you Seth. And thank you Kickstarter.

Note: I received this as part of the surprise pack of goodies Seth provided those of the 4,242 people who volunteered to support his Kickstarter project to fund his latest book, The Icarus Deception.

There seems to be a trend of books that look like they are for children but written for adults. There are adult coloring books and picturebooks on writing or life. This picture book
from Seth Godin is on the abc’s of motivating to create art.

In some ways I felt this book, with it’s motivational words of wisdom, reminded me of another author’s speech about creating art and that author is Neil Gaiman. It’s a wonderful speech and if you haven’t heard or read look for it on the interwebs. This picture book is simple but prompt. Something to pump up a artist who, like me, wonders if their art matters.

The feeling the book gives is a wonderful pick me up even if the literal words do not stay with you. I have to keep reading over each letter trying to remember what the one before it said. I guess that makes it is a good thing it’s only a picture book.

V Is For Vulnerable is a book that can be read repeatedly especially when you need a push to keep creating.

Sometimes the universe does work in magical ways. And after disappointing news and wondering WTF I am doing, a coworker drops this on my desk. All letters are impacting, warranty hit the nail on the head "your art might not work and your career might not work either. I it doesn't work today, it might not work tomorrow either. But our practice is to persist until it does". It's a coffee break read. That everyone should read.

Who says adults don't need picture books? To me, they are the most comforting books there are. And ironically, Life Ourside the Comfort Zone is no exception.

Having a day when you feel lost? Find your way back to yourself with this book. Feeling like your way of reaching out to the world leaves you empty handed? Curl up with this book. Experiencing that stranger in a strange land thing? Turn the page in Godin's book and feel at home.

This book is simple and straightforward in presentation, an Alphabet Book for adults. Seth Godin's message is presented within this format, but it is a message that I don't find simple. I believe, but I need a book like this to remind me of what I need to do to obtain my dreams.

I is a quick read and designed to be one. Yet, it is also to be read over and over again. So to rate this as an already read book is a half truth. I will be reading it over and over because I want to continue to change and breakthrough.

A fun very quick read (about 15 minutes) although it can be re-read over and over. Even though the book keeps referring to art, all the words and ideas can refer to life ... especially if you live life as art.

Enjoy!

This book is quirky enough because it’s basically a children’s book for adults. Godin takes you through the alphabet while offering advice on how to think and act if you want to be successful. It’s okay, I guess, but kind of a throwaway. So so.

Perhaps I would have thought more highly of this book if I had not just read The Icarus Deception, but since this one is just the last three pages of that one - all done up with illustrations to look like Dr. Seuss - I have to acknowledge my disappointment. Maybe if I had some kids in my life and I wanted to mix this in with their reading, I would appreciate Godin's efforts here. Even then I would think twice: Not all heroes wield swords. I don't mind that Godin churns out books by the dozen, or that some of the material is repetitive, but this one was a miss for me.

Though this is a 5-10 minute read, it packs a punch. It encourages the reader to be themselves and to color outside the lines, per se. Its original audience is for artists but the concepts are applicable in all areas of life.

It's simple yet to the point. Basic in its method of conveyance and you have to love the artistry.
