Midnight Hunters #4

The Lone Hunt

Rate this book
A world of violent passions and inhuman hungers explodes as ancient taboos and primal desires collide.

Wolf Were Alpha Sylvan Mir wants nothing more than to keep her pregnant mate Drake safe in their secluded stronghold, deep in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, but enemies, political and praetern, force her into battle. Sylvan must confront the Vampire Chancellor Francesca, a one-time lover, about her part in a recent attack on Mir Laboratories—a confrontation that will test Sylvan’s alliance with the Vampires and lead to war. Francesca’s enforcer Michel, with a secret sexual conquest in Sylvan’s Pack and a Were centuri newly-turned Vampire, Lara under her command, may have divided loyalties, too. Lara, born to fight in service to the Were alpha, finds herself caught between two worlds, belonging to neither, and her unexpected obsession with an enemy Alpha puts ancient loyalties to the test. In a world where humans and praeterns conspire for the ultimate power, violence is a way of life...and death.

I’m not certain how to even start with a book like this! This is book number four in the six book Midnight Hunters series by Radclyffe, writing as L.L.Raand. These are fantasy books following the Wolf Ware Alpha Sylvan Mir and the Adirondack Timberwolf Pack. The previous books should be read in order as one will continue to build the story started by its predecessor. The Praetern Coalition seeks to get humans to acknowledge the other species, such as wares and vampires, as citizens with rights. This has made the Praetern individuals and societies visible after millennia of hiding amongst humans. Of course, powerful individuals seek to eradicate them and go as far as experimentation and assassination.
This book continues to tell the story of the Praetern and human struggle but centers around one of Alpha Mir’s previous guards. Lara was once a dominant ware turned vampire and now serves as Warlord for newly risen and powerful Vampire Gates. As she struggles to come to terms with her new identity while trying to hold on to her wolf, she finds herself alone and shunned by vampires and wares alike. This changes as she finds a dominant Cat Ware Alpha on the run. Together they must find a new place in their society and join the fight that threatens all Praeterns.
I will readily admit I’m not a die hard fan of any of these type of characters. In fact, the last vampire story exposure I had was through Hotel Transylvania (hey first, I have kids! And second, the movie is actually good!). So for those die hard fans, I’m not sure if general rules are followed well or not. What I can say without a doubt is, Radclyffe created a wonderful world for this series with rules that are followed throughout the books. There is thought behind the characters’ behaviors and actions. There is also science and interesting concepts that I believe only few authors can create so masterfully. The conspiracy and intricacies lesfic authors are used to reading in her books is also present and definitely make me want to continue to read to see how all the discord between the species is elucidated.
This series is very explicit when it comes to describing sexual behaviors by the Praeterns and humans. It is so abundant one becomes used to it and understands the need for those behaviors to be part of the story. Wolf wares are encouraged to ‘tangle’ with each other when they reach adolescence, and that sets the scene for the pack and everything else in the books. Likewise, vampires’ feeding rituals are tightly bound to their sexual needs and that of their servants. That said, the author manages to still create intimate scenes with the main characters that are not lost in all the ‘background sex’. Readers that are bothered by extensive explicit sexual content should avoid this series altogether.
This book’s audiobook version is available through Audible and free if you have their Romance Package subscription. The entire series is narrated by Maxine Mitchell, who did a marvelous job. As any lesfic fan knows, Radclyffe’s series have many women at any given time. Ms Mitchell was superb at creating different voices for the characters so they would be distinct, and therefore, avoid any confusion while listening.
Overall a fantastic read or listen for anyone interested in this type of fantasy world. 4.5 stars

3.5 but couldn’t round up to 4. I liked Raina but the pace of her and Lara falling in love was much too quick. For such a loner as the cat Weres are, this seemed very out of character.

I truly enjoy the Midnight Hunters books - they're more like a serial than a series, though, and that makes it hard to wait for each new installment.

Once a year isn't enough!!

This newest volume introduces a new character into an already sweeping cast, but this addition - a Were cat Alpha - is a welcome participant.

That being said - you really have to have read each one of the Midnight Hunters books in order to pick up and understand this one. The community of Praeterns, the politics and a very involved story-line are complex and build book to book. A reader cannot simply "drop into" the series - a read from book 1 forward is required. As a matter of fact, I would suggest a complete re-read of the first three books, and then picking up this one to add to the story. You'll get the most out of the plot, cast of characters and alliances with a fresh recollection. It will be worth it, though, because Rad is building a great and intriguing story.

I do have one issue with the book ( and somewhat with the series in general ) - it definitely lacks a time and place for tenderness between the characters. There's a lot of sex, and lots of grabbing and taking and thralling and thrashing and ripping off of clothes - but there's not a heck of a lot of tenderness between the couples and I miss that. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that the Were cat Alpha has cubs - and for me, the most genuine and sweet moments are the few when the characters interact with them. As odd as it might sound, it makes the characters seem all the more relatable and real.

Four stars from me for a great addition to a wonderful series. I'm waiting eagerly for the next book!

I don't like this road we are taking. If every creatures is gonna get powerful, Raand should just say Sylvan wasn't as powerful to begin with. I HATE LARA and her red-head cat I wish they would just go away, now she is Alpha or some bullshit, she should go somewhere and die or something. I FUCKING HATE HER.

And this is all, Raand's fault. Book 1 was all promising, with power and one wolf-alpha with a powerful prime. And then the powerful enemies and the coalition being weird, and the humans. And I was really enthralled, but now it is Lara this, Lara that and that bitch is getting on my last nerve with her so called powers. I am telling you if the next book says she is more powerful than Mir, I am so fucking out. And Mir, she is just existing, queen, I need to see this so-claimed power that is being mentioned. Kill a bitch or two... go rampage on them fuckers. Not pressing dicks cause that's amateur and a little disgusting.

PS: I love Drake.

Pss: THE SEX IS GETTING US NOWHERE. THE HORNESS IS GETTING US NOWHERE. AND THE MALE PARTS HARDENING ARE DEFINITELY NOT FUCKING GETTING US ANYWHERE. TOO MUCH SEX HIDES THE STORY. And that's not sheesh.

Psss: Those babies better be powerful and not mate with some weak-ass genes because I just can't. Can we like get back to Mir and Drake and their problems because that's what makes more sense and gives more life.

Awesome

This one was brilliant. I love this series.

In this sequel we meet Raina the catwere alpha. She fights with Lara after we see her transform into a wolf during daylight. Something she no longer should be able to do. Lara takes her and her cubs prisoner, and presents them all to Sylvan.

Raina helps the wolves and the vampires capture a cat were who works for the humans experimenting on Sylvan's wolves. So can, Jody and Raina then become allies. Also, Lara becomes Raina's mate. Which is kinda sweet. I really wanted Lara to find someone and not be so lonely.

They all attend a gala. It's a political party that all the important persons from the human and pratearn groups attend. Drake go's into Labour so they leave early. A bomb is activated, and the rover approaching Slylvan, Drake, Jody and Becca explodes. Raina, Niki and Lara race to protect them.

Drake has two girls and Slyvan and the pack are mourning the loss of Andrew. One of her own wolves set the bomb. She feels betrayed. With the help of her mate, her kids and the pack she remains them to remember their losses and celebrate the next generation.

I can't praise this series enough. If you love werewolves, vampires, oh and sex you're gonna love this series. Enjoy!

And the story continues... I still find these books thrilling and the new character in this one adds fuel to the fire. I'm rather glad I waited so long to read these books as it would have been torture to wait a year or more for the next book. As it is, I can't wait to read the next one....

This is the 4th book in the Midnight Hunters series. Be sure to read Books 1-3 first!

Like Niki, Lara finds herself adrift in a rapidly changing world as she tries to redefine herself and her role. Is she still were, is she vampire, or is she both or neither? Unlike Niki, Lara finds an inner strength that is more nuanced, and although her mental anguish is more understandable (she is dead, after all!) she is more likable than Niki. Lara and the sensual cat-were Raina are one of the new parings in book 4. In addition to cat-weres, other weres are mentioned for the first time: coyotes and foxes. Somehow, I giggle everytime I picture a chipmunk-were, which weren’t actually mentioned in the book!

The vampire world is explored much more in book 4. Francesca is the embodiment of vampire: powerful; superficially elegant yet casually mean-spirited and dangerously petty. Francesca makes long-term plans for power but also for entertainment. Her daily routine includes pleasuring and being pleasured by obsequious vampires and humans, some of whom may have their own hidden agendas, and some of whom seem happy to serve….and survive Francesca’s whims. For Francesca, alliances are fluid, and she meets with Sylvan and with the humans, planning to be on the side of whomever wins.

Francesca’s #2, Michelle (Michel, technically, but I keep envisioning a male with that spelling!) becomes a more complex character. Initially I hated her for participating in the sexual abuse of Katya, and I continued to hate her for mind-wiping Katya’s memories after further encounters. Yet as Katya later insists she remembers her despite the thrall and mind-wipe efforts, and that they share a bond in which she (Katya) is a willing participant, I began to reevaluate Michelle. She is, after all, a vampire. For centuries she has taken blood and pleasure from victims. As she (Michelle) begins to question who and what she is, and who and what this link with Katya means to her, she begins to be a more sympathetic character than I could have imagined. It’s startling, and disturbing, to look upon a sexual abuser with any sympathy at all…yet Radclyffe has managed to make this happen. Amazing….and still disturbing….but amazing.

The humans Veronica (the scientist), Nicholas (the praetern-hating businessman) and Senator Westan get bigger roles, and are never made into even remotely sympathetic characters. I found it interesting that as we forgive vampires their flaws for being vampires, and weres their flaws for being weres, we are not asked to forgive humans their flaws for being human. Weres and vampires may be driven by base instincts, but they struggle to allow their minds to overcome those base instincts. Humans, it seems, when driven by base instincts of power and lust never seek to rise above those base instincts…they embrace the evil. Fortunately, a group of humans who are not driven by evil are introduced, and may yet make allying with the human race a better choice than all-out war. Yet the good humans must live in the shadows of the evil humans.

Book 4 is a much better book than was book 3, and ends explosively (heh, heh)…you’ll want to begin book 5 immediately! Back to a 5* ranking for a book in the Midnight Hunt Series!

I really, really enjoy this series and the previous books. This time, however was just bland for me. I think it's because it's the same couple repeating itself over and over again. Sure it's mixed up. Cat/wolf, vampire/human etc etc but, the personalities of the couples are all the same and the way the relationship develops and the outcome is always the same. Like it's always the "I can't help myself", irresistible pull but the no, no, no we can't, then inevitably of course, the couple ends up together and in this over protective, caveman relationship. I get that it's part of the appeal.. the animal instincts etc but literally, every species pretty much acts the same and it is just getting kinda boring. Nikki has always annoyed me and this book i just outright could not stand her. I don't know. Maybe it was just me and I may reread this at a later date and change my review but for now, this was my impression for the first read. I would actually give it 2.5 stars.

I love this series, and this newest installment has so much going on that I need to read it again immediately because I'm sure I missed some things. I love the new couple introduced, Lara and her unexpected lover. This new character, a were cat, is delicious. I also love the overall upheaval that Sylvan experiences as she sees her pack become more diverse and the world change around her. That's tough for an alpha who needs to feel in control of everything. As usual, Raand leaves you wanting more and looking forward to the next installment.

The Lone Hunt is the fourth in L.L. Raand's Midnight Hunters series and is the best yet. Given that I have awarded five out of five stars to the previous books, that's an impressive feat.

The story itself picks up just hours after the explosive finale of the preceding Night Hunt as the forces arrayed against Sylvan Mir and her Timberwolf pack seem to act with impunity whilst she tries to pursue acceptance for the praeterns through due process.

After events in previous books, Lara is struggling to find her new place in the praetern world. Raina, on the other hand knows where her loyalties lie; as alpha of the Catamount were cats, to her cubs and her pride even though she is on the run from them which brings her into Timberwolf territory and into the path of Lara.

We've met were cats before but usually only briefly as enforcers for the bad guys. It's explained why that happens and how it leads Raina to run into a situation that normally results in a were cat's death. I like Raina a lot. Unlike Lara who is believably torn between her old world and her new one, Raina's only thought is escape and the survival of her cubs.

There is something that can't be defined about Lara and Raina's relationship that I enjoyed more than the others to date. Perhaps it was the fact that Raina gave Lara an anchor that she'd lost. And the fact that even though she is an alpha, she seems less bull headed than both Sylvan and Jody. However, that could well be because of the situation that she's in.

Whilst that was the main relationship, things also progress in Francesca's vampire seethe with Michel and Katya and Luce and Dr. Veronica Standish. Michel and Katya's relationship, whilst more honest in that Michel isn't compelling the young wolf is still somewhat clandestine because Michel is trying to hide its importance to her from her viceregal. However, Dr. Veronica Standish and her fixation on Luce, her vampire bodyguard isn't what it seems and give the doctor's previous behaviour...good!

Of course, a large portion is also devoted to Sylvan and Drake and Drake's pregnancy. All I'm going to say on this is that the ending, whilst not a cliff hanger is certainly a nail biter with a twist. As for whether the twist is for better or for worse...I won't spoil that.

Unfortunately, The Lone Hunt has only recently been published at time of writing which means a long wait for the hoped next in the series.

Nobody saw in chapter four of this book how a RAPE was naturalized? No one? Allow me to refresh your memory: Reina is agonizing on the floor while the protagonist, Lara, is excited (textual) with her nipples, so much that she ends up having sex with the person who lies beneath her helpless. Did I say AGONIZING?
Now, I remind you another thing: this lady who wrote it has treated people in a state of helplessness as it is a sedated person.
Helplessness. Weak. Dying. Reina doesn't give her consent, Lara straddles and ready. Is that your argument? Naturalize all this situation? Ok, a little further back strangles (I repeat STRANGLES) to the person who would later excite her.
This made me sick just by reading it.
The author surely has had someone half dead at her mercy at some point in her life, she knows perfectly what that is as a doctor. How can you even write something like this that is clearly a rape?

This is the fourth book in the Midnight Hunters series. Lara’s been through so much so I was on the edge of my seat waiting for her story. I liked the introduction to a new subspecies! The books continue to circle back to previous relationships and hint at the new ones.

As stated in my previous review:
Radclyffe does not disappoint on the erotica tag at all. I was a bit concerned with the insta-love vibe, but it definitely coincides with the fact that the Weres are able to sense their true mate. I am such a sucker for books where there are possessive and jealous love interests. This hits that right on the dot.

TW: There are explicit M/F scenes (hardly any but still). There is also abuse to some characters. It is mild. It’s not g!p necessarily… but please read other reviews for a more in depth explanation.

I reread this series every Halloween and cannot recommend it enough. H to the o to the t.
➢Happy reading!

Number four in the series... This one doesn't disappoint. It's full of primal urges, and our baser instincts. It takes us on a journey to a primal level, and leaves the question. Of the creatures, and humans portrayed, which are more human? I for one, found the creatures to be more human.. Loved the story, and got lost in it too. Oh, and it leaves you hungry for more (you can take that how you please). Have I said I hate sequels.. When's the next one due out?

I still can't quite get used to the idea of the books running straight on from one another so it takes a little time to adjust. It felt a little samey, the whole character meets other characters falls for said character stupidly quick. The end was a good twist and did keep me on the edge of my seat.

It was good. The fourth book in the series, and things aren't getting old yet. That's a good sign. The paranormal aspect of these books has a unique flavor that takes some getting used to. The sex and descriptive quality of the sex is sometimes almost overpowering, but I think that's deliberate. Either you're going to like it, or you're not. The conclusion of this particular book had me racing for the end, and that's a good thing. Overall, a good book. Taking a mother break from the series, now. Unlike the Honor series which I read from beginning to end in a matter of a couple of weeks, these, I need a break from.

The most stellar & enthralling book of the series

I swear, this series just continues to achieve greater levels of awesomeness & excellence!!

Its unique & captivating storyline, spectacular in its complexity, fluidity & intensity creates a very compelling & entertaining book. With a nice flowing effortless progression, engaging narrative incorporating such formidably vulnerable & passionately flawed characters made it an easy read.

Continuing with a good, entertaining story with interesting characters & hot sex scenes extremely well written… your only thought is—What's gonna come next?

I'm sort of confused as to where this story is going overall. Couples are getting together but for what end? If Lara is now a partial alpha and partnering with Rena will she leave Jodi and Silvan to lead the cats? Is Michel going to leave Francesca? Or bring Catia with her to Francescas life. Idk too many questionable couplings and not enough moments in the story. I will continue on with the story because I want to see how Silvam responds to the death of Andrew. I also want to see more of the twins Drake just had. I'm also waiting for Sophia to finally claim Nikki.

Much better than the previous book in the series.

I saw a lot of the elements that I really enjoyed from books 1 and 2. The mated pairing in this book had the most braincells which was a breath of fresh air.

For those that were a little disappointed by book 3, stay with it! It does get better. If you are interested in a chaotic paranormal/urban fantasy I would absolutely recommend the series. I will point out that it does stretch the suspension of disbelief a little and there a number of parts that would be red flags in a contemporary story. I find paranormal fantasy can have more of a darker/problematic tone. I think for the most part the author is not condoning the problematic nature of the characters, they are just very messy characters.

Hmmm....

Four books in a series you don’t expect much to change but you do expect growth in the writer and characters but honestly that hasn’t come about. I feel like I’m going around in circles waiting for something to just happen. Especially plot-wise. I feel like nothing major has developed and hopefully it isn’t too much to wish for that in the next book.

Magnificent

The one thing that makes this series stand apart from many others, is that Raand picks up where the last book left off. It's absolute perfection.
This fourth book is as good as the first. It might even be my favorite one, yet.
Onto Book 5...
