What's better than an Asterix story? Three popular tales in just one volume! Asterix and Obelix travel to Helvetia for a rare flower in Asterix in Switzerland . In The Mansions of the Gods , our heroes' humble village is endangered . . . by a trendy Roman architect. Then it's off to Rome, where Asterix and Obelix must steal one of Caesar's most prized possessions in Asterix and the Laurel Wreath !
René Goscinny (1926 - 1977) was a French author, editor and humorist, who is best known for the comic book Asterix, which he created with illustrator Albert Uderzo, and for his work on the comic series Lucky Luke with Morris (considered the series' golden age).
3.5/5 Admittedly there is sexism and racism displayed in this book, partly from the stereotypes, and partly from the illustrations. The women are all gossips and complainers, and the black people are drawn with exaggerated features...exactly what you are thinking...
...but the stories are so much fun! Everyone is dumb except one person (which can be any person at any time with no explanation) and no history is really being told. All the puns and the names are hysterical. I can understand why this would never make a good live-action remake.
Goscinny and Uderzo must have been really blowing up around this time, since Mansion of the Gods in particular has some beautiful double page spreads in different art styles. A real departure from the usual stuff.
