গাব্বুর বয়স মাত্র বারো,কিন্তু এর মাঝেই তার চুলের ডগা থেকে পায়ের নখ পর্যন্ত সে পুরোপুরি বৈজ্ঞানিক। সেটি কোনো বড় সমস্যা হওয়ার কথা না, কিন্তু সে যেহেতু প্রতি মুহূর্তেই কোনো না কোনো বৈজ্ঞানিক পরীক্ষা করছে এবং তার বেশির ভাগ পরীক্ষার ধকলগুলো বাসার সবারই, ‘এক্সপেরিমেন্ট’ শব্দটার সাথে একধরণের অ্যালিার্জির মতো হয়ে গেছে। তাই যখন গাব্বু তার বৈজ্ঞানিক এক্সপেরিমেন্টের কথা সবাইকে বোঝানোর চেষ্টা করে অন্যেরা অনেক সময়ই তার গুরুত্বটা গাব্বুর মতো করে বুঝতে পারে না।

Muhammed Zafar Iqbal (Bengali: মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল) is one of the most famous Bangladeshi author of Science-Fiction and Children's Literature ever to grace the Bengali literary community since the country's independence in 1971. He is a professor of Computer Science & Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). Before that, Iqbal worked as a research scientist in Bell Communication Research for six years until 1994.
Birth and Family Background:
Iqbal was born on 23 December 1952 in Sylhet. His father, Foyzur Rahman Ahmed, was a police officer. In his childhood, he traveled various part of Bangladesh, because of his father's transferring job. Zafar Iqbal was encouraged by his father for writing at an early life. He wrote his first science fiction work at the age of seven. On 5 May 1971, during the liberation war of Bangladesh, the Pakistan's invading army captured his father and killed him brutally in the bank of a river.
Education:
Iqbal passed SSC exam from Bogra Zilla School in 1968 and HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1970. He earned his BSc in Physics from Dhaka University in 1976. In the same year Iqbal went to University of Washington to obtain his PhD and earned the degree in 1982.
Personal Life:
Iqbal married Dr. Yasmeen Haque in 1978. Yasmeen is the Dean of the Life Science Department, Head of the Physics Department, Provost of the Shohid Janoni Jahanara Imam Hall and a researcher at SUST. They have two children - son Nabil and daughter Yeshim. Yeshim translated the book Amar Bondhu Rashed (Rashed, My Friend) written by her father. Iqbal's elder brother, Humayun Ahmed, was the most popular author and film-maker of Bangladesh since its independence. Humayun died after a nine-month struggle against colorectal cancer on the 19 July 2012. His younger brother, Ahsan Habib, is the editor of the satirical magazine, Unmad and one of the most reknowned cartoonist of Bangladesh.
Academic Career:
After obtaining PhD degree, Iqbal worked as a post-doctoral researcher at California Institute of Technology (CalTech) from 1983 to 1988. He then joined Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), a separate corporation from the Bell Labs (now Telcordia Technologies), as a Research Scientist. He left the institute in 1994 and joined the faculty of the Department of CSE of SUST.
Literary career:
Iqbal started writing stories from a very early age. Iqbal wrote his first short story at the age of seven. While studying in the Dhaka University Iqbal's story Copotronic Bhalobasa was published in a local magazine. But, a number of readers at that time felt that the story was based on a foreign story. To answer this allegation, he later rewrote the story and published the story in collection of stories named Copotronic Sukh Dukkho. Since then he is the most popular writer both in Bengali Science-Fiction and in Juvenile Leterature of the country.
Other Activities and Awards:
Zafar Iqbal won the Bangla Academy Award, the highest award in literature in Bangladesh, in 2004. Iqbal also played a leading role in founding Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad. In 2011 he won Rotary SEED Award for his contribution in field of education.

আচ্ছা আপনারা কি সেই নাট বল্টু কে মিস করে থাকেন যে মশার ভুত বন্দী করত, ইনডাকশন কয়েল বানিয়ে টিচারকে শাস্তি দিত, মুরগীর ডিম পাড়তে কষ্ট কমানোর জন্য মুরগীকে ভিনেগার খাওয়ানোর চিন্তা করত। যদি অল্পস্বল্প একটুখানিও মিস করে থাকেন তাহলে এই বইটি একবার ট্রাই মেরে দেখতে পারেন, সেরকম কিছুটা ফিল দিলেও হয়তো দিতে পারে আপনাকে । যদিও গল্পের প্লট টা একটু বেশিই সাদাসিধে । তবুও এটুকুতেই মন বাবা আপাতত খুশি ।
তো গাব্বুর সঙ্গে একটু পরিচয় করিয়ে দিই । পোলার বয়স মাত্র বারো, কিন্তু এর মাঝেই তার চুলের ডগা থেকে পায়ের নখ পর্যন্ত সে পুরোপুরি বৈজ্ঞানিক। ভারী গ্লাসের চশমা আর উশকুখুশকো চুল। তাদের বাসায় এক্সপেরিমেন্ট শব্দটা একটা বিভীষিকা । হ্যাঁ, গাব্বু এক্সপেরিমেন্ট করতে চায়। কিন্তু কই করতে পারে? বাসায় মা বাবা, বোন টুনি সবাই তার বিরুদ্ধে। তার ল্যাবরেটরি সব ফেলে দিয়েছে মা। টুনি আর মিঠুর কিছু নিয়ে কাজ করতে গেলেই ট্যাঁ ট্যাঁ। আসলে বাসায় কেউ তার বৈজ্ঞানিক ভাবনা বুঝতেই চায় না।
অপরদিকে আছেন , বাংলাদেশের বিখ্যাত বিজ্ঞানী রিফাত হাসান। দীর্ঘদিন পরে তার দেশে ফেরা নিয়ে তুমুল হইচই। কার আগে কে তাকে কাভার করতে পারে তা নিয়ে রিতীমত প্রতিযোগিতা। তারপর বেশ দারুণভাবে পরিচয় হয় আমাদের গাব্বুর সাথে। তার বৈজ্ঞানিক মনোভাব রিফাত সাহেবকে বেশ মজা দেয়। গাব্বু তার টিকটিকিরর দুই লেজের হাইপোথিসিস শোনায় বেশ রঙ চঙ মেরে। বিজ্ঞদের মত বলে তার গবেষণা এখন ট্যালিপ্যাথি নিয়ে।
তারপর আর কি ?!! স্যারের কিশোর উপন্যাস নিয়ে সবারই কম বেশি অভিজ্ঞতা আছে। বাকিটুকু বইতেই না হয় হোক! কি বলেন?!!

গাব্বু,কিশোর উপন্যাস এবং মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবালের লেখা সেহেতু এর মধ্যে সায়েন্স রিলেটেড টপিক তো থাকবেই, তা আর নতুন কিছুনা।
এইবার বই নিয়ে আমার মতামত...
বইটি বেশ ভালোই ছিল বিশেষ করে গাব্বুর সায়েন্স নিয়ে এক্সপেরিমেন্ট গুলা। গাব্বুর এক্সপেরিমেন্টের ফলে মানুষের ভোগান্তির শেষ নেই তবুও বলবো বাংলাদেশে আরো গাব্বুর জন্ম হোক।
একসময় জাফর ইকবাল অনেক পড়েছি,তখন বয়সটা ছিল কম, বেশ উপভোগ করতাম তার লেখা।তাই যারা কিশোর আছে তাদের জন্য বইটি ভালোই হবে এবং আমার মত হালকা বয়স্কদেরও জন্য খারাপ না!!😄😄
এইবার বই নিয়ে আমার মতামত...
বইটি বেশ ভালোই ছিল বিশেষ করে গাব্বুর সায়েন্স নিয়ে এক্সপেরিমেন্ট গুলা। গাব্বুর এক্সপেরিমেন্টের ফলে মানুষের ভোগান্তির শেষ নেই তবুও বলবো বাংলাদেশে আরো গাব্বুর জন্ম হোক।
একসময় জাফর ইকবাল অনেক পড়েছি,তখন বয়সটা ছিল কম, বেশ উপভোগ করতাম তার লেখা।তাই যারা কিশোর আছে তাদের জন্য বইটি ভালোই হবে এবং আমার মত হালকা বয়স্কদেরও জন্য খারাপ না!!😄😄

ছোটদেরকে বিজ্ঞানে উদ্বুদ্ধ করার উদ্যোগ নিয়েই লিখছেন মনে হয় মুজাইক ইদানীং। আমাদের সময়ের দশ-বারো বছর বয়সের 'হাত কাটা রবিন' আর 'দস্যু ছেলের দল'-এর ছেলেদেরকে আর খুঁজে পাইনা এখনকার বইতে। তবে দুইটা দুইরকমের সময় ছিলো, দুইরকমের চাহিদা ছিলো, আর একই ধাঁচের বইতে আটকে না থাকাই ভালো একজন লেখকের। গাব্বুর টুকিটাকি জিনিস ভালো লেগেছে, মজাও লেগেছে।
শেখ আফজাল হোসেনের আঁকা ছবিগুলো এইবার ভালো লাগেনি। ছবির সাথে টেক্সট-এর অসঙ্গতি ছিলো জায়গায় জায়গায়, বিজ্ঞানীর মোচ আছে কিনা বলা হয়নি বইতে, ছবিতে বিজ্ঞানী যেন মুজাইকেরই রূপ, প্রিন্সিপালের (স্কুলে কি এখন আর হেডমাস্টার থাকে না?) পাঞ্জাবি পরার কথা উল্লেখ নাই কোথাও, ছবিতে তাই পরিহিত, ইতাদি। বইয়ের ফন্ট, বাঁধাই আর সেই হিসেবে দাম নিয়ে বারবার একই কথাই বলি, এভাবে আর কতটা বাড়বে কতদিন তা দুশ্চিন্তার বিষয়।

গাব্বু গল্পটি সুন্দর। তবে বইতে গাববুর আচার আচরণে মনে হলো ও বেশ অহঙ্কারী। অবশ্য পৃথিবীর সব মানুষের মধ্যেও হিংসা , অহঙ্কার এই ব্যাপারগুলো থাকে। হিংসা করো না বা অহঙ্কার করো না বললেই তো আর এসব দমিয়ে রাখা যায় না। যাই হোক আসল কথায় আসি।গল্পের নাম গাব্বু হলেও আমার বেশি ভালো লেগেছে সায়েন্টিস্ট রিফাত হাসান কে। অবশ্য শেষের দিকে গাব্বুকেও ভালো লেগেছে।

গাব্বু was a 12 years old scientist. He loved to experiment from small to big things. Sadly, the elders didn't understand or encourage him enough much to his dislike. He always got into trouble because of his experimental and curious nature. On the other hand, রিফাত হাসান was a famous international scientist. He recently came to his motherland for a three-day trip. গাব্বু and রিফাত হাসান had no connection with each other. But they met suddenly one day. রিফাত হাসান understood গাব্বু and গাব্বু helped রিফাত হাসান with his current experiment. Soon an innocent friendship was born.
The illustrations were placed on the wrong pages. The plot and characters were okay. Kinda the same pattern as নাট বল্টু or ব্ল্যাকহোলের বাচ্চা or any other books that had a main character as scientist. গাব্বু's behavior was insane but hilarious. Adorable. Anyway, it was a quick and enjoyable read.

বইটি খুবই সুন্দর ও মজার।আমার মনে হয় সবারই গাব্বুর মতো হওয়া উচিত। এককথায়, খুবই অসাধারণ বই।আমার মনে হয় জাফর ইকবাল স্যারের গাব্বুর সিরিজ বের করা উচিত।

ছোটদেরকে বিজ্ঞানে উদ্বুদ্ধ করার উদ্যোগ নিয়েই লিখছেন মনে হয়। গাব্বু গল্পটি সুন্দর। গল্পের নাম গাব্বু হলেও আমার বেশি ভালো লেগেছে সায়েন্টিস্ট রিফাত হাসান কে। অবশ্য শেষের দিকে গাব্বুকেও ভালো লেগেছে।

আচ্ছা একটা ১২ বছরের বাচ্চার কথা শুনলে মাথা কি আসে? এক মাথা ঝাকড়া চুল, সারাদিন দৌড়িয়ে বেরাবে, খেলাধুলা করবে আর পড়াশোনায় অমনোযগী বলে বাবা মার কাছে বকা শুনবে। (যদিও বাস্তবে সবাইকে ফার্মের মুরগী বানায়ে দিয়েছে এই বক্স বন্দী শহর)। কিন্তু কথা যখন হচ্ছে গাব্বুর তখন সাধারন ডেফিনেশনে আর তাকে আটকানো যায় না। বয়স মাত্র ১২ হলেও সে খাটি বিজ্ঞানী। কি হল, কিভাবে হল, কোথা থেকে হল এই সব প্রশ্ন আর জানার আকাঙ্ক্ষা নিয়ে সবাইকে ব্যাতিবাস্ত্য করে রেখেছে সে। অবস্থা এমনই দাড়িয়েছে গাব্বুর এক্সপেরিয়েন্সের নাম শুনলেই সবার গাঁ শিউরে ওঠে, এই না কি আবার শুরু করল গাব্বু! এই গাব্বুর দৈনন্দিন মজার মজার কাজ নিয়েই হল এই বই এর কাহিনী।
পাঠপ্রতিক্রিয়াঃ জাগর ইকবাল ইদানিং বেশীই সায়েন্স বাচ্চাদের মুখে গুজে দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করছেন। আগের সেই দুরন্ত ডানপিটে কিশোর কিশোরীও তাই জাফর ইকবালের বইএ অনুপস্থিত।

আমার বই পড়ার হাতেখড়ি হয় গাব্বু দিয়ে। এক বসায় শেষ করেছিলাম বইটা। এই বই দিয়েই আমার বইয়ের নেশা শুরু হয়।
গাব্বু পড়েই আমার সবার থেকে আলাদা হওয়ার একটা প্রবণতা তৈরি হয়। গাব্বুই আমাকে অনুপ্রাণিত করতে শুরু করে, কারো ভাবনার তোয়াক্কা না করে নিজের মতো থাকতে, weird হতে।
যেহেতু এই বই দিয়ে আমার পাঠক হিসেবে যাত্রা শুরু, তাই স্বাভাবিকভাবে এই বইয়ের উপর একটা আলাদা আবেগ কাজ করে। তাই এই বই নিয়ে কথা বলতে গেলে আমি একটু তো বায়াসড হবই। তবে এটুকু বলতে পারি, কিশোরদের বই পড়ার হাতেখড়ির জন্য গাব্বু একটা ভালো অপশন।

This is a tale of a school boy who is a scientist.His family & classmates have to endure his "experiments". Suddenly one day he meets with a renowned scientist.Then,what happens next?For this you have to read the book.The story is simple,subtle.It will certainly give you a sense of pleasure.

তাঁর ভাল লেখাগুলোর মধ্যে এটা একটা। আর শিশুদের বিজ্ঞানে আগ্রহ গড়ে তুলতেও বেশি বেশি এরকম লেখা দরকার।[ it's too good ]

It was good and exactly what I expected from a Zafar Iqbal book. Nothing fancy, nothing boring either.
