Muhammed Zafar Iqbal (Bengali: মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল) is one of the most famous Bangladeshi author of Science-Fiction and Children's Literature ever to grace the Bengali literary community since the country's independence in 1971. He is a professor of Computer Science & Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). Before that, Iqbal worked as a research scientist in Bell Communication Research for six years until 1994.
Birth and Family Background:
Iqbal was born on 23 December 1952 in Sylhet. His father, Foyzur Rahman Ahmed, was a police officer. In his childhood, he traveled various part of Bangladesh, because of his father's transferring job. Zafar Iqbal was encouraged by his father for writing at an early life. He wrote his first science fiction work at the age of seven. On 5 May 1971, during the liberation war of Bangladesh, the Pakistan's invading army captured his father and killed him brutally in the bank of a river.
Education:
Iqbal passed SSC exam from Bogra Zilla School in 1968 and HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1970. He earned his BSc in Physics from Dhaka University in 1976. In the same year Iqbal went to University of Washington to obtain his PhD and earned the degree in 1982.
Personal Life:
Iqbal married Dr. Yasmeen Haque in 1978. Yasmeen is the Dean of the Life Science Department, Head of the Physics Department, Provost of the Shohid Janoni Jahanara Imam Hall and a researcher at SUST. They have two children - son Nabil and daughter Yeshim. Yeshim translated the book Amar Bondhu Rashed (Rashed, My Friend) written by her father. Iqbal's elder brother, Humayun Ahmed, was the most popular author and film-maker of Bangladesh since its independence. Humayun died after a nine-month struggle against colorectal cancer on the 19 July 2012. His younger brother, Ahsan Habib, is the editor of the satirical magazine, Unmad and one of the most reknowned cartoonist of Bangladesh.
Academic Career:
After obtaining PhD degree, Iqbal worked as a post-doctoral researcher at California Institute of Technology (CalTech) from 1983 to 1988. He then joined Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), a separate corporation from the Bell Labs (now Telcordia Technologies), as a Research Scientist. He left the institute in 1994 and joined the faculty of the Department of CSE of SUST.
Literary career:
Iqbal started writing stories from a very early age. Iqbal wrote his first short story at the age of seven. While studying in the Dhaka University Iqbal's story Copotronic Bhalobasa was published in a local magazine. But, a number of readers at that time felt that the story was based on a foreign story. To answer this allegation, he later rewrote the story and published the story in collection of stories named Copotronic Sukh Dukkho. Since then he is the most popular writer both in Bengali Science-Fiction and in Juvenile Leterature of the country.
Other Activities and Awards:
Zafar Iqbal won the Bangla Academy Award, the highest award in literature in Bangladesh, in 2004. Iqbal also played a leading role in founding Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad. In 2011 he won Rotary SEED Award for his contribution in field of education.

"সুহানের স্বপ্ন" গল্পটার শেষের দিকেও আমি ইমোশনাল হয়ে যাই। বিশেষ করে শেষের কয়েকটা লাইন পড়ে আমার বুক ভারি হয়ে ওঠে। অনেক ভালো লেগেছে গল্পটা।
"দ্রুমান ইঞ্জিন" গল্পটাও ভালো লেগেছে। দ্রুমান ব্যাটার একটা উচিত শিক্ষা হয়েছে। তবে টিরিনা যে একটা রোবট সেটা মাথায় আসেনি। তাকে মায়াবতী মেয়ে বলেই মনে হয়েছিল!!আবার পড়তে চাই \

ঘৃণার সঙ্গে বসবাস গল্পটা সত্যিই চমৎকার । কিন্তু শেষের দিকে আশা করেছিলাম এদের দুইজনকেই হয়তো চিড়িয়াখানায় রাখা হবে পুরুষ আর নারীর প্রদর্শনী হিসেবে । রাখলে ব্যাপারটা আরো ইন্টারেস্টিং হইতো ।

ডিস্টোপিয়ান ভবিষ্যতের পটভূমিতে রচিত এই রোমাঞ্চকর, রৈখিক অথচ আশাবাদী কাহিনিটি পড়তে ভালো লাগল।

জাফর ইকবাল স্যারের বেশিরভাগ সায়েন্স ফিকশনগুলো শেষের দিকে আমার কাছে কেন জানি ইমোশনাল লাগে। "সুহানের স্বপ্ন" গল্পটার শেষের দিকেও আমি ইমোশনাল হয়ে যাই। বিশেষ করে শেষের কয়েকটা লাইন পড়ে আমার বুক ভারি হয়ে ওঠে। অনেক ভালো লেগেছে গল্পটা।

পৃথিবীর মানুষ আজ দুভাগে বিভক্ত। একদিকে ক্যাটাগরি এ - যাদের জন্য আছে শিক্ষা, চিকিৎসা, নিরাপত্তাসহ সব ধরণের সুযোগসুবিধা। অপরদিকে ক্যাটাগরি বি- সম্পূর্ণ একঘরে, পরিত্যক্ত, সকল সুযোগ সুবিধাবিহীন সেকেন্ড ক্লাস নাগরিক। ক্যাটাগরি এ মানুষেরা ক্যাটাগরি বি দের অস্পৃশ্য বিবেচনা করে, বানর বা বনমানুষের সমগোত্রীয় মনে করে এমনকি একজন ক্যাটাগরি বি মানুষকে হত্যা করলেও তেমন গুরুতর কোনো অপরাধ হয়না।
এমনই প্রেক্ষাপট মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবালের 'সুহানের স্বপ্ন' নভেলাটির।
প্রেক্ষাপট টা অনেকটা হিটলারের আর্য বনাম ইহুদি তত্ত্বের মত। কিংবা দীর্ঘদিন ধরে পাশ্চাত্যে চলে আসা সাদা বনাম কালো বিভাজনের মত। এরূপ জাতি, বর্ণ, ধর্ম, লিঙ্গের ভিত্তিতে বিভাজন প্রায় দেশেই আছে, এখনো আছে। এখনো অনেক স্থানে নারীদের শিক্ষালাভ নিষিদ্ধ, স্বাধীনতা নিষিদ্ধ। আছে ধর্মের নামে বিভাজন, কেবলমাত্র বিধর্মী হবার কারণে অত্যাচার সহ্য করতে হয়, প্রতিবাদ করে করে ফললাভ শূন্য।
'সুহানের স্বপ্ন' - তে আমরা দেখতে পাই শুধুমাত্র ক্যাটাগরি বি ট্যাগ লাগার কারণে কিভাবে সুহানের মত এক বুদ্ধিমান তরুণকে পদে পদে অপদস্ত হতে হয়। কিভাবে ন্যূনতম মানুষের সম্মান থেকেও তাকে বঞ্চিত করা হয়।
কিন্তু পরিস্থিতি চিরকাল একরকম থাকেনা। ঘৃণার বিরুদ্ধে ভালোবাসার জয় হবেই। মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল তাঁর বাদবাকি লেখার মতই এই নভেলার শেষেও সত্যের বিজয় ঘটিয়েছেন, যদিও তার জন্য প্রাণ দিতে হয়েছে থিরুর মত অজস্র সাহসী অকুতোভয় যুবাকে।
'সবার উপরে মানুষ সত্য, তাহার উপরে নাই' - চন্ডীদাসের এই অমর বাণীই নভেলার শেষকথা।
বইটিতে আরো দুটি গল্প আছে। নিশি ও অশুন - এক অসুখী দম্পতি, যারা যথাক্রমে উগ্র নারী ও পুরুষবাদী, তাদের ভবিষ্যতের যাত্রা নিয়ে লেখা 'ঘৃণার সঙ্গে বসবাস'। দিনশেষে মনুষ্যত্বই মোদ্দা কথা, অধিকতর উগ্র নারীবাদ বা পুরুষবাদ কোনোটিই সত্যি নয়- এটিই গল্পের মেসেজ। এদিক দিয়ে 'সুহানের স্বপ্ন' এর সাথে কিছুটা মিল আছে।
প্রথম গল্প 'দ্রুমানের ইঞ্জিন' পরিত্যক্ত গ্রহে আটকে পড়া এক ধূর্ত শয়তান নভোচারী দ্রুমানকে নিয়ে লেখা। সে গ্রহটিতে আগত উদ্ধারকারীদের শরীর কাজে লাগিয়ে তাঁর ইঞ্জিন চালু রাখে। যদিও পরিশেষে মানুষ ভেবে সাইবর্গ টিরিনার উপর একই পদ্ধতি খাটাতে গিয়ে সে নিজেই ফাঁদে পড়ে যায়।
সুহানরূপী থিরুর সিকিউরিটি কোড ব্রেক করে প্রতিবেদন বিশ্বব্যাপী নেটওয়ার্কে ছড়িয়ে দেয়া ও শেষে নিরাপত্তারক্ষীদের হাতে প্রাণদান 'সুহানের স্বপ্ন' - এর ক্লাইম্যাক্সে প্রচন্ড সাসপেন্স এনেছে। ফলে যতটা না সায়েন্স ফিকশন তার চেয়েও বেশি থ্রিলার হয়ে বসে আছে নভেলাটি। শেষদিকে সেই উত্তেজনা আমাকেও গ্রাস করেছিলো। তাই রেটিং ৪/৫।

_দ্রুমান ইঞ্জিন গল্পে, দ্রুমানের উচিত শিক্ষাই হয়েছে৷ নিজের বানানো ইঞ্জিনে নিজেই বলি! টিরিনা যে রোবট তা শেষটায় গিয়ে বুঝলাম!
_ঘৃণার সঙ্গে বসবাস গল্পে, নিশি আর অশুন দুজনকেই চিড়িয়াখানায় বন্দী করলে বেশ হতো!
_ সুহানের স্বপ্ন গল্পে, শেষে তো ভেবেছিলাম সুহান বুঝি মরেই গেলো।
_ঘৃণার সঙ্গে বসবাস গল্পে, নিশি আর অশুন দুজনকেই চিড়িয়াখানায় বন্দী করলে বেশ হতো!

তিনটি গল্প নিয়ে 'সুহানের স্বপ্ন' বইটি। বৈজ্ঞানিক কল্পকাহিনী যারা পছন্দ করেন, তাদের জন্য একটি ভালো বই, তারা পড়তে পারেন।
তবে আমি ব্যাক্তিগতভাবে বৈজ্ঞানিক কল্পকাহিনী পছন্দ করি না। কারণ এসব কাহিনি পড়ার পর নিজেকে কেমন সাইকো মনে হয়। মনে হয় আমার আশেপাশে অদ্ভুত কিছু একটা ঘটে যাবে।
তবে আমি ব্যাক্তিগতভাবে বৈজ্ঞানিক কল্পকাহিনী পছন্দ করি না। কারণ এসব কাহিনি পড়ার পর নিজেকে কেমন সাইকো মনে হয়। মনে হয় আমার আশেপাশে অদ্ভুত কিছু একটা ঘটে যাবে।

সুহানের স্বপ্ন পড়তে গিয়ে একটা কথা মনে হল, যেটা এর আগে যারা বায়োবট পড়ার সময়েও মনে হয়েছে। ক্যাটাগরি বি মানুষের উপর অত্যাচার আর বৈষম্যের ঘটনাগুলো কল্পনা করতে লেখককে নিশ্চয়ই খুব বেশি দূরে যেতে হয়নি, নিজের দেশেই তিনি এর অনেক বাস্তব উদাহরণ পেয়ে গেছেন।

1. Druman Engine.
A forlorn planet where it seems impossible for any human to live. A beacon comes to a spacecraft from the planet for rescue. When they send a probe, with two astronauts onboard, they find a person named Druman living in the planet. At last the newcomers find that Druman has made a machine which he runs by humans after changing the DNA of humans employed, so that they can’t feel any pain or agony. Druman tries to incapacitate the two astronauts but didn’t know that one of them was an android, boon of dev of tech in the time he had been in this lonely planet.
2. Ghrinar shonge bosobas.
Nishi and Oshun, a married couple who loathe each other to the heart. They dicide that they want to remain in hibernation for thousand years and check the world to find which gender persists by natural/artificial selection. When they wake up they find that the people of the earth can no more be distinguished by gender. The world has evolved by evicting all discriminations(race, gender etc) and people are genetically designed to be immaculate.
3. suhaner Shopno.
Last story of the book. All the people of the world have been divided into two categories, A and B. Suhan is a category B human being. Category B human beings are humiliated and debased by the whole world. They rarely avail any any type of civil rights.
One day suhan receives a letter offering him a govt job in a data centre. Suhan assumes that the job is deadly and that’s why it has been offered to him. He commits himself for the job. One day he finds an intruder in the main server room and reports the auth. Riga, the security head kills the intruder mercilessly.
There’s been an ongoing rumour that a bill is soon to be passed revoking all the rights of cat B humans which they still possess meagerly. However, the report of scientists basing on which the bill will be passed, is in safe custody in the data centre.
When suhan was on the way to home, he was attacked by some unkown persons and after waking up he starts listening multiple voices in his head. Later on from one of the voices, he comes to know that an integrated cct has been fixed in his brain which was in the brain of the man who intruded the data centre. He starts communicating with the voices and finds out that after installing the cct in his head, he is now part of an integrated brain of few humans of B cat. The doctors are observing him and prods him with investigative ques to know the whereabouts of that group. Suhan technically hides the info about the group.
The said group plots a scheme with the help of Suhan to divulge the report to common mass. The report says that developing cat B humans was a plot by some powermongers and Cat B humans should have rights to that of cat A humans. At last the report could be disclosed. The world bemoes free of category discrimination.

অনেক অনেক ছোটবেলায় এই বইটা পড়েছিলাম। বইয়ের কাহিনী কিছুই মনে ছিল না তবে যেটা মনে ছিল সেটা হল-আমার এক খালাতো বোন আর আমার এই 'সুহান' নামটা এতটাই ভাল লাগতো যে এই নাম নিয়ে আমরা যে কত কাল্পনিক কাহিনী করতাম!
যাই হোক, কয়েকদিন আগে নীলক্ষেতে গিয়েছিলাম হুদাই ঢু মারতে। এই বইটা চোখে পড়ে একদম নস্টালজিক হয়ে বইটা কিনে ফেললাম। ভাল লেগেছে অনেক বছর আগের পড়া বইটা আবারও পড়তে।

এই বইটা ভাল ছিল। যদিও জাফর স্যার প্রায় কাছাকাছি থিমে একাধিক বই লিখেছেন, তারপরেও ভাল লেগেছে বইটা।
