From the Introduction: This book represents literally hundreds of word-of-mouth tips and tricks, which are next to impossible to find in your local bookstore. This the true gold which only comes fro years and years of hands-on experience -- including all the hard-to-find Orchid information that you can't just find by doing an internet search or heading over to your local public library.
I had been growing orchids off and on for most of my life, but it became a real passion of mine when my husband and I retired to Florida where there seem to be orchids everywhere.
I probably own a dozen books on orchids from the Dummies book to a few that are now out of print.
Here's why Orchids Made Easy is one of (if not my #1) favorite:
Ryan really covers everything you need to know, explained in an easy-to-understand way... WITHOUT any of the technical lingo and boring "academic" writing style you find in most orchid books.
Ryan writes in a "down-to-earth" style you can relate to even if you're a complete beginner. Everything is explained step-by-step.
And probably my favorite part about the book is all the neat little "home remedies" Ryan gives you like Listerine, Cinnamon, Mayonnaise and a bunch more..
Now, I will tell you this:
If you're looking for a "pretty book" with poster-sized closeup photos of orchids that you can leave on the coffee table, this is NOT your book.
And if you're looking for an advanced academic book about the science of orchid taxonomy and propagation, then this is not your book either.
This is a book for beginner to intermediate orchid enthusiasts - especially helpful if you'd like to learn the basics of orchid care...
And if you're trying to get your orchid to rebloom... or bloom longer.
I bought my copy off Ryan's website http://www.orchidsmadeeasy.com - because it's not available on Amazon. My copy is "dog-eared" with dozens of folded pages, highlights, and post-it notes.
Also, for years Ryan has offered a free "orchid tips" newsletter that I also recommend, which I think you can still sign up for here.
I bought the ebook version and also green thumb membership at a reduced price for a month. I have found it every difficult to find information on a specific subject in this ebook. There is not a very good content list. So you have to read through reams of chat, and there is plenty of that, before you may or may not find what you need. Very frustrating. So I find myself looking on youtube at a very good channel on every aspect of orchid growing you can think of, and a very good group on Facebook where the info is given happily and FREELY. A lot of what I have read can be found on the internet an/or on this group on Facebook. But they speak as though they have some hidden secret which no one knows about but them. I do have the email tips and found that I now cannot view any of the answers to the questions they raise. They are blurred out, and again you have to pay probably through Green Thumb membership to be able to gain access. So the free email tips are useless Very disappointed for the price of it, and as I live in the UK a lot of the products recommended are not available to me as this was produced in the US and the environment conditions will be totally different.
