Eighteen-year-old Kimberly gets the shock of her life when she learns the father she thought was dead is not only very much alive, but never even knew she existed. Angry with her mother for lying all these years, Kimberly flies to Colorado to meet the father she knows nothing about before heading off to college in the fall.
Her father’s world turns out to be nothing like she expected. Rather than the typical nine to five lifestyle, Kimberly’s father runs a summer foster camp that teaches young children skills to build their confidence and self-esteem. The Colorado Rocky Mountains are a different world than the sunny shores of California, taking Kimberly completely out of her element, and causing her to second-guess her spur of the moment decision.
Never being one to quit anything, Kimberly is determined to show her father that a surfer girl can fit into this rugged mountain wilderness. That is if she can deal with Mason, an arrogant nineteen-year-old guy who has made it his mission to point out every mistake she has made since her arrival. While she would love nothing more than to rub it in his know-it-all face, Kimberly can’t deny the feelings he stirs up inside her, or the chemistry between them, even during their verbal assaults.
When a tragic accident leaves them stranded in the mountains, Kimberly must use her shaky skills to save Mason and survive the elements. Suddenly, fighting is the last thing on their minds as they must rely on each other if they want to live. In their struggle for survival, they realize what they thought they knew about each other isn’t true after all.

Kimmie is such a lovely character. Finds out she has a father after 18 years of her life is definitely not something easy and Kimmie wants her daddy back. So it was simple, she's going to meet her father and spend summer before collage with him. Oh, but life had another plan, so he mixed Mason in the story.
Lovely story about two individuals who at first try to fight their feelings, but as always love beats everything.
Just perfect, my feelings are very tangled up right now, I need ice cream! Damn you Tiffany King for making me feel this way.
First 35% of the book was good enough. Later than that..it was arrgghh..!!(I felt like pulling my hair out!)
Here are a few instances that did not agree with me at all:
1)There is talk of giving a 12 year old space to come to terms with a shocking and unwelcome news she's just received .Well,in my opinion, twelve year olds in such a situation need a lot of hugs and someone to hold them as they cry!
2)When the land below them gives away, as they go trekking, Kimberly takes quite a fall (literally !) and still suffers from a few bruises and a fractured finger only, while Mason fractures his leg.(Umm..really? Even if she falls onto a tree, the acceleration caused by the gravity would have led her to fall with enough force that she suffered some serious injuries.)
3)While taking a fall,Mason looses the walkie-talkie too.Well, aren't the walkie -alkies secured to your waist band? All I know is that it is not so easy to loose a 'well secured walkie-talkie', which you would expect given all the training and experience Masons had.
4)Also,while fixing Kimberley's finger Mason informs her that the nearest hospital is an hour and forty-five minutes away, in the foothills, so they had to learn more medical training than usual.(Well, then won't it be normal for them to carry the appropriate anti-biotic injections to prevent infection in an open fractures in their first-aid supplies? If you are going trekking on a mountain, fracture from a fall is the most obvious kind of emergency you would expect ! )
5)Well lets move on further with the story,Kimberley waits outside as Mason undergoes his first physiotherapy session. It's natural to expect that he will try to push her away. All he says is : "I don't need you." and next thing Kimberley is saying is: "I'm going home.". Once she's home she tells her best friend that she left him in a hope that he will come after her! (She's soo.. intelligent! He's there, dealing with a heavy blow of loosing his leg and instead of making him believe that she is going to be there for him she leaves him and expects him to come after her..!! This is soooo.. ridiculous !)
Here's the actual quote:
"You little minx. You think he'll come after you." "I hope he does," I said honestly.
Well, I can go on and on about how crap this book was but I really don't want to burden you all with my rant any further. So here goes:
Holy Blazing Campfires, Beach Bunnies! Well, it's safe to say that Tiffany King has done it again! Tiffany is such a sneaky lil writer too…she knows just how to get under your skin without you even realizing it. You are just rolling along enjoying a Unlikely Allies and then BAM! you are staying up waaayyyy past your bedtime leaving tear stains on your kindle as you devour the final pages. (I even had to re-read the ending just to be sure it really happened, which then made me cry AGAIN.)
The chemistry between Mason and Kimberly (aka beach bunny) is off the charts. From the git go the witty, smart ass remarks roll freely between the two and it is perfect. I love me some good banter and boy does Tiffany dish it out in this book. (And by the way beach bunny has to be the cutest term of endearment EVER!)
I found myself pining away for each Mason encounter and wondering what that smarty pants boy really had going on in his head. And Kimberly she is my kind of girl! She is such a sweet, good- hearted, tough, strong woman who can dish out just about anything Mason sends her way. I never stopped rooting for her!
I experienced just about every emotion in this book! I don't often cry when I read so when the I found myself bawling my eyes out (more than once), I knew right then and there Tiffany had won me over yet again. Nothing compares to "roughing it" with Mason and Kimberly. This is a must read! Five stars just isn't enough.
Well Tiffany King has done it again!!!! I truly LOVED Unlikely Allies. I felt that this book sucked me in, she made me feel the same feelings the characters were feeling. I thought Mason and Kimberly were great together. I liked how their relationship didn't start off that strong. They worked at their feelings and built it up over time. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone. This one will definitely have a spot on my favs shelf:)
*This review is for an ARC copy obtained from the author
The first thing I’d like to mention is that I waited until the morning to write this review. I wanted so badly to write it immediately after finishing the book…but I think the review would have looked like this: “HOLY F*** WHAT THE WHO AWGJADF AKDFGARGKL SHE DID WHA FDKJ KFMG OMG AMAZING…” And so on. Instead, as I do for many reviews that leave me with that reaction, I wait a few hours or overnight to absorb all of it.
I have yet to be disappointed by a book of Tiffany King’s so far. I’ve read both Wishing For Someday Soon and Forever Changed earlier this year. They both blew me away. This book lived up to this author’s previous standards.
What I was initially drawn in by was the characters. In the first few chapters that’s what kept me reading the most. Kimberly, the main character, is very likable. I especially like the artistic side she has. Through this, King was able to capture the beautiful settings in the novel.
There were many characters that I fell in love with. One of them was Amy (of course). When the reader meets her, it’s hard to not like her. She reminds me of a character out of Gilmore Girls. Since I love the fast-talking, eccentric, always a great friend personality of characters like Rory, Lorelai, Lane, and Sooki…Amy was a perfect match for a reader like me. I also really liked Rick. The story could have gone a different way, if King had given him a different personality or reaction to the situation at hand. I was surprised and pleased to get to know the loving man and new father that is Rick.
Since this book is set mainly in a summer camp for kids, it is only natural that there are great younger characters as well. Tiffany King seems to have a natural talent for touching the reader’s heart through these young characters. In her past books this is true, and she’s done it again in Unlikely Allies. These kids have gone through a lot in their lives. They are all children who are in the foster care system and haven’t known stability much. Camp Unlikely Allies was established to try to give children like them an opportunity at enjoying life and growing up.
Alyssa is one of the young characters that really touched me. She’s very closed off from others. She always has a wall up to everyone. The reader gets a little background on her and that’s when I wanted to just give her a huge hug. There’s a certain part of the story in which I was close to tears because of this little girl. That’s something King is also good at. Grabbing the reader in an emotional tractor-beam and playing with their hearts.
Now about the setting. It was a welcome change from earlier King books I’ve read. Most of it takes place in the mountains of Colorado. I’ve always wanted to go there myself, and the picture painted in my mind was beautiful. I think everything that’s great about being in the great outdoors enjoying nature was touched on here. While I don’t live in the Colorado wilderness, I do live in the wilderness for the most part, and I could picture myself easily going through some of the struggles that take place in Unlikely Allies.
What’s the main reason we’re here though? It’s not the characters or the setting is it? Maybe. I know a few readers will have picked this book up for the romance as well. AND the adventure. Both those elements are in this book. They actually go hand in hand. I was left baffled at times with the interaction between Kimberly and Mason. I questioned the relationship between them the entire time. It’s one of the reasons I had to keep reading. I needed to know who was going to strangle the other first, haha.
The struggled that they both go through later on in the book was great as well. I don’t know if King has been stranded and injured in the woods before, but I think she has written a very believable account of what it’d be like. I was left on edge the whole way through wondering what obstacle was going to arise next. Whether it was physical or emotional, everything kept me sympathizing for the characters.
I can’t say any more. There’s just so much greatness in this book. If Tiffany King wasn’t one of my favorite authors out there already, she’d have made it on the list with this one. I’m eager to see how other readers enjoy the book once it’s released.
I adore Tiffany King. As a person, and as an author, so I had a good idea going in that I would enjoy this book. But I wasn’t prepared for just how addictive Unlikely Allies turned out to be.
This book kept me walking on the treadmill for a lot longer than I had planned (double win), and staying up way too late at night to squeeze in a few more chapters before finally crashing and dreaming of mountains and trees and hot, arrogant men.
Yes, my subconscious aged Mason to a more acceptable age for a dream boyfriend.
So let’s start with Mason. I loved this hero. He came from a hard background, but didn’t let that define him. Even when he was picking on Kimberly, you knew from all the other characters that his behavior toward her was unusual. He genuinely cared about all the other campers and especially for Rick, Kimberly’s dad and Mason’s foster father. Of course the boy was hot, but what drew me in was his protectiveness, especially during the second half of the book.
And oh, the second part of the book. I enjoyed the first half, the set-up, getting to know Kimberly better, watching the relationship between her and her father build, and the friendships that she made with the other camp leaders, but it was the second half of the book that had me pounding the keys on my Kindle, needing to see what happened next. Ms. King pulls out all the stops when Mason and Kimberly are stranded in the mountains. You get a MAJOR swoon factor, you get danger, suspense, tender moments that had me teary-eyed, and conversations that make you laugh.
I’m an emotion girl, a character girl. And when an author can get me to fall in love with the characters, and gets me to experience the full range of emotions with them, they skyrocket to my favorites list. And this book did that. It also taught me a lot about wilderness safety and survival skills. Knowledge that I hope I never have to put into practice, but hey, good to know.
Kimberly was a fun heroine to live the story with—she was smart, artistic, funny, and had a good heart. Her relationship with her mother was complicated, but understandable, and perhaps because Tiffany is a mother herself, she handled it respectfully. The mom made a major mistake, which was the inciting incident for this whole book, but she took ownership of it and in the end made up for her faults. Rick was perhaps my favorite character. He was a strong, caring dad who didn’t always see eye-to-eye with his California girl daughter, but he was always looking for that connection, that way to bond and show he cared, and their conversations about CW shows made me smile. The rest of the book is fleshed out with a wide variety of characters you get to know and truly care about, and I found myself hoping this would kick off a series of books. I’d love to know more about all of the friends she made in camp and during her first semester at college. One boy in particular (*grin*).
I recommend Unlikely Allies to anyone looking for a captivating read that will pull at your heartstrings and inspire you. It was fast-paced and fun and I know I’ll be reading it again in the future. If you’ve never read any of Tiffany King’s books before, start with this one…and then start playing catch up! You won’t regret it.
I finished reading this last night and I woke up today feeling weird because I can't seem to absorb what have happened on this one. This is my first Tiffany King novel and I feel excited about it and all because the blurb looks promising and the cover has this mysterious effect on it.
I was really drawn in by the characters. There are several characters that are very much easy to love.
Kimberly (and it was my first encounter of a character having a name of Kimberly. Just saying.) was very likeable. Though she was skeptical about meeting her father she still finds her way to make it to her father's camp all by herself; Meeting her father's people and doing the things that he does. It's nice seeing her make an effort and not holding any grudge to him. And as the story ends, her maturity and growth become significant.
Mason is really a maze for me. I can’t quite figure him out. His attitude can get out of hand at times and tends to tick me off. But his continuous banter with Kimberly was pretty fascinating. Their interaction with each other was funny at the same time very much heartfelt.
Then there's Amy. Since meeting her at the beginning of the story, I begin to really like her because it’s really hard not to like her. She's very eccentric and talkative but always a great friend who would always help you.
The concept of having a summer camp for kids was pretty touching for me. These children all came from different foster care systems and haven’t known what stability means. The camp Unlikely Allies, which were established by Kimberly's dad, Rick were a great help for those kids.
The only thing that is really not so great is the tragedy that happened. Of course, who would love tragedies right? It was believable okay, but seeing people suffer and sad and all was really disturbing for me, but seeing that this tragedy only make the people on the story stronger, I get over it eventually.
Unlikely Allies was an okay read. The tragedy isn’t that heavy and the plot was okay and the characters are great but there’s this just something that I can’t point out that I think was missing somewhere. I’ll check out other works of Tiffany King and see if it would still evoke same reaction from me as this one. Yay! :)
First, I want to thank Tiffany King for giving me this book to review. It was very kind of her. Second, I thought Tiffany King could not get any better as an author...well, yet again, I was WRONG!
Best Part: Mason! Mason! Mason! Boy oh Boy do I love a fictional hot boy and Tiffany King knows how to write 'em!!!! I mostly love the interaction with Mason and Kimberly. It was funny, heartfelt, aggravating and perfect for them. Also, Kimberly was amazing! She came to camp unsure of herself so much but by the end of the book you saw that, despite everything, she was growing up. I loved that! On top of that, I loved that this book was actually believable! There was no supernatural beings, just a boy, girl, a whole camp of kids and love.
Not so great: Without giving away to much (because I do not want to spoil it) I did not like Mason's attitude at times. Of course, I understand why he did what he did, but (as a female) it just ticked me off! I eventually got over it! =)
I received this book as an ARC for The Indie Bookshelf This book is the first I have read by Tiffany King, and she can write a story!! I enjoyed everything about this book! The unique plot never dulls, desperate circumstances that kept me up all night turning the pages, with a love story story to make your heart melt. When I finished I craved more! Not to mention King's ability to capture so many wonderful, different personalities in her side characters. Kimberly the heroine is such a likable, strong, intelligent and beautiful character. Mason grew on me, he was a tough cookie to crack. He was very sarcastic and witty at first, but he redeemed himself to me, and I eventually fell in love with him. I definitely recommend this book!
Unlikely Allies was a fun, fast read with a lot of great elements: it's a family drama, an adventure/survival story (think Hatchet, but with kissing), a coming of age story, and a sweet romance.
MC Kimberly (don't you dare call her Kimmie, buster!) is pretty stunned, angry, hurt and, yes, curious when her mom tells her shortly after her 18th b-day that, by the way she does have a Dad after all. Her mom's kept Kimberly's existence secret from her long ago lover Dad, and vice versa, for reasons that don't seem very good in retrospect. So now Kimberly is spending the summer at her Dad's place, which she finds out on her arrival (she and mom don't talk much after the big reveal), is a summer camp for foster kids, high in the Colorado mountains. Quite a change up for the artist chick from a beach town who doesn't especially like kids. And then there's that jerk, Mason, the arrogant quasi-son her Dad seems to have taken under his wing. Why does he seem so determined to drive Kimberly away, just when she's making friends and getting along so well with Dad and the campers. And the most irritating thing about him? She can't stop those tingly-tangly feelings of attraction that make his hostility all the more hurtful. But the ground literally falls out from under her feet when she and Mason are sent into a storm to find a missing camper, and things go downhill fast. Can she find the inner strength to survive and overcome the physical and emotional challenges their new situation presents?
Kimberly is a great character, resourceful and strong, with a good sense of who she is. But it's when she is thrown into some tough and challenging situations that her true colors are revealed and she steps up and grows up, in touching and real feeling ways. She's not a perfect kid, by any means - her relationships tend to suffer from her unfiltered mouth and super snark. But that is part of her considerable charm. Mason, the hottie you love to hate, also reveals his depths as the action develops, and there are some sa-woon-o-rama moments for sure. But the course of true love never did run smooth, and there are obstacles and hurdles in their way, some extrinsic, some the product of pride or pique. How they overcome them, with the help of some really well developed and charming side characters, makes for a touching and tender conclusion to this lovely YA read.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: 5 stars — God damn you Tiffany King!! Do you care that I had to get up at 4am for work today?? Nooooo…you had to make your book unputdownable.
So yeah, tantrum over. LOVED it. Loved all the characters…main, side, side side…all. Kimberly and Mason threw me at first with the hostility…I mean, obviously I knew it was coming b/c duh, I did read the synopsis…but I really wasn’t sure I liked where that was going and it was harsher at times than I expected. But it resolved in a way that I was happy with. I was worried it would make the chemistry between them unbelievable…I mean, it’s one thing to think a person is hot, and another to be really *INTO* them. But it totally worked. The camp stuff was fabulous, the agony and suspense of the accident and stuff was GAH! And then it had so much more afterwards than I was expecting. Basically, if you’ve read a Tiffany King book and loved it, then what are you waiting for???
ON REREAD: 4 stars — Still a thoroughly entertaining read, but I think I was anticipating certain parts of the story and forgot that they were actually pretty small and didn’t come until halfway. So the pacing just didn’t work quite as well for me. I also noticed more errors, but again — 2012 Indie is a lot different that 2020 Indie.
My highlights were definitely the relationship between Kimberly and her Dad — I loved the little bits we got here and there; Kimberly’s budding friendship with Amy — that girl was hilarious; and the suspenseful bits after the accident. I enjoyed the chemistry that eventually developed between Kimberly and Mason, but not as much as I probably wanted to.
So yeah, still entertained, but probably not a great choice for my reread list.
Unlikely Allies is my favorite book of the summer. Hands down, without question. I can’t express with mere words just how much I love this book, nor can I tell you how much I love the author. Tiffany King has a knack for writing some of the most beautiful stories. That being said, I must tell you about her newly released book Unlikely Allies.
The book begins with Kimberly stepping off of a plane in Colorado to meet her father; a man she never knew existed, for the first time. I found myself relating to Kimberly’s character immediately. Here she is, thinking her life is perfect and that everything is going according to plan, when a bomb drops from nowhere. The course of her life is forever altered with no apparent end in sight.
Tiffany’s writing style is so elegant, that sinking into the story from the first word is inevitable.
Kimberly finds out that she will be spending the next 6 weeks at her father’s summer camp for Foster kids called Camp Unlikely Allies. The second they arrive, she loves the camp, until she meets Mason. He criticizes, belittles, and brings out the absolute worst in her. She decides right away that as long as she has to deal with Mason’s jackassery, the next 6 weeks will be the longest of her life.
After settling in, Kimberly meets another camp counselor, Amy, and they instantly form a friendship akin to sisterhood. When a girl from camp goes missing, the counselors and Kim’s dad team up to find her, forcing Mason and Kim to work together to find her. Will their mutual hate/attraction be the end of everything they’ve worked for, or just the beginning? I wish I could tell you, but you must, must, MUST read the book.
This book is so good that I just couldn’t put it down, and I hope that you won’t either.
what a fantastic start this book had? I actually thought I am gonna tag with "in-dreamland-state" 'coz that is for major swoon-worthy books only. But (yeah that was what I feared too) after Chapter 5, i don't know where that awesomeness went. The book loses its light tone and goes a bit darker. it's easier to break this into what I liked and didn't lists:
what i liked 1. the plot. it was really good and promising reminded me of CW's short-lived and my guilty pleasure series Life Unexpected 2. LOVED Kimberly's humor. After Hartley in Social Suicide, Kim does come next. with her awesome two best-friends Car and Amy. 3. The early start of Kim/Mason relationship.
what i didn't like 1. Kim leaving Mason after he lost his leg and pushed her away. It's like there was no character development to her after all that time she spent at the camp. The later part of her relationship with him sucks tbh. 2. There's no real bonding time between Kim and her father considering it's the heart of her issues.
Those are what drew me out of this book. I did get to read a sneak peak at her book Forever Changed, and it looks angst-y & I LOVE angst <3333 so I'll check that out.
I loved this book. It was a sweet romance (which Ms. King does very well) and I finished it in almost one sitting. I really hate when my job gets in the way of a good book.
A few things bothered me(hence the 4 star review) One, I felt Mason lacked depth. I wanted more from him and his past and while he was a great character, I just felt he lacked something. The last is that I felt the romance lacked full development (but it is still a sweet romance). You don't feel them falling for each other and it isn't shown. It is more so told and inferred from what is happening.
Absolutely couldn't put it down! I particularly loved Kimberly and Mason--all the characters, really! It was refreshing to read about really nice, good people, trying to do the "right" thing! Even though Mason was prickly at first, we understand why he's like that. Really well-fleshed out, interesting characters to root for, and a compelling plot that keeps you turning pages, long into the night!
I loved the relationship between Beach Bunny and Greeky! The sass and sarcasm between them in the beginning was hilarious; I love when Kim asks Mason if he orders manuals on being an a**hole or does it just come naturally...all the characters in the story are likable especially co-counselor Amy! Unlikely Allies was full of great characters, realistic dialogue, twist, turns and a Greek God hunk!
I think this was my favorite of Tiffany's books. It made me cry in the dentist's office! It struck me to the core because I've worked with foster kids...I've seen that hard shell, so to read about a place that helps them? Loved it! Good work!!
I've been a Tiffany King fan since Meant to Be, so naturally I had to get my hands on Unlikely Allies as soon as possible. I finished it the same day I received it. It was that good, on par with the rest of her novels if not even better!
Eighteen-year-old protagonist Kimberly has never know a thing about her presumably deceased father--that is, until the day her mother informs her that he is alive and just as much unaware of her existence. This incites a whirlwind of activity for an angry Kimberly, who impulsively takes off to meet the man who should have spent every day up to now with her. However, just as soon as she lands in Colorado, Kimberly realizes that she knows just about nothing about her father, the manager of summer camp for foster children. For California girl and "Beach Bunny" Kimberly, spending her last summer before college camped out in the Rockies is not at all what she expected, but she's up for the challenge. The question is whether the environment, the children, and above all, former-camper-now-counselor Mason, will make or break Kimberly's resolve.
Kimberly is one of those female protagonists I love reading about. She has a lot to deal with, but she manages to the best of her ability. She also has plenty to prove both to herself as well as the other people in her life, but she doesn't back down when obstacles arise. In short, Kimberly's a fighter. At the same time, she still reacts to certain situations just like any adolescent would. She's a true human character with real emotions and real struggles. Opposite Kimberly is the absolutely infuriating but undeniably charming Mason, who has quite a background as well. Once you learn about his past, it's easier to understand why he acts the way he does. I found that Kimberly and Mason were perfectly compatible, much like pieces of a puzzle.
The storyline in Unlikely Allies caught my attention because it was so unique. I don't know about you guys, but I've never read a YA contemp that centered around a summer camp. As someone who has attended one before, I found myself reminiscing over all of the little tidbits and memories from my experiences as I read about Kimberly and Mason's adventures. Of course, theirs were far more unpredictable *hint hint* but entertaining all the same. I loved that I really didn't know how it would end until the very last few pages.
I cannot wait to see what's next from the lovely Tiffany King!
Once again, King has blown my mind with another beautiful young adult novel that sucked me in from start to finish. I absolutely adore King’s books, all of them, and Unlikely Allies is another gem that I highly recommend to any who enjoy a sound, realistic plot line, swoon worthy characters, a bit of drama, and a triumphant ending.
Kimberly, our protagonist and a highly engaging character, is visiting her father for the first time, having just found out about his existence. Whisked away from California to the Rocky Mountains, she is in for a “rude awakening,” but in my opinion, Kimberly handles herself extremely well. Though she doesn’t necessarily fit in with those around her, she shoulders the animosity of some campers/staff extremely well, while quickly making friends with others. I really enjoyed her happy-go-lucky attitude, and though I’ll say the book moved a bit faster than I would have liked (I so wanted more of Mason and Kimberly), I really loved every moment of it, especially the witty banter.
Mason, nicknamed “Greeky” for his Greek god physic and attitude, is to die for. Though he is downright nasty in the beginning, I found his search within himself to be extremely real and well written. Mason’s life hasn’t been peaches and cream, and the appearance of Kimberly brings extreme thoughts of jealousy to the forefront as, in my opinion, they should—we’re only human, after all, and if someone walked into my life and laid claim to the only person who’d kept me grounded throughout everything I experienced, I’d probably react the same way Mason does. But with time, all things heal, and I loved watching both Kimberly and Mason fight their attraction only to realize their true feelings for one another… though the timing couldn’t be worse as they’re thrust into a battle to survive… (and I just loved this… my heart was in my throat for the remainder of the story).
King’s story is highly engaging, bringing to life not only the characters, but also the Rocky Mountains. I’ve never been there, but through the descriptions of the wilderness and the harsh realities of an unforgivable terrain, I was easily able to imagine it every step of the way. I love novels where I’m drawn into the scenery as much as I am into the characters’ lives, and King achieves both in this latest release.

Kimberly was a character that you couldn't help liking! At the beginning of the book she's put in a situation where she learns she has a father she's never known about. So what does she do? She goes to see him! If I were in her position I KNOW I would be crazy nervous. And she was too. But once her and her father meet each other the relationship they have is seriously the sweetest thing ever.
One thing I thought was super cool was that Kimberly got to help out at her Dad's summer foster camp. And I was pretty jealous because, to me, that sounds like one of the funnest things ever. To Kimberly, not so much. But that will change! While at the camp, Kimberly meets Mason. And don't let that name seem insignificant because TRUST ME. That guy is definitely important.
At first, you will find Mason to be one of the most infuriating, arrogant guys you've ever read about. But don't you worry your pretty little book reading heads because there will be a change of heart. I can't tell you when, but it will happen. And when it does happen it's probably the greatest thing ever. You'll also find yourself really liking him while you hate him. Difficult emotions goin' on there. And Kimberly is in the same boat the reader is in. And while she hates to admit it, there's definitely some chemistry.
WHEN Mason and Kimberly finally do get on the same terms when it comes to how they feel about each other, it's super sweet. The bantering back and forth was beyond adorable and there were many-a-smiles comin' from me when they were together. But there were also some pretty deep moments. Especially when they are stranded in the mountains with some pretty terrible injuries. They both have to rely on each other to get back. But don't think it was all heavy sad stuff! There were also times in that situation where you had no idea how they could be so upbeat. But I'm glad there was. :)
There will also be times in this book where you want to yell at the characters and tell them what to do. But alas, without the stupid decisions, the ending wouldn't be as perfect. I can't tell you what made it so perfect because you must read it!
This book had it's adorable moments but then some super heart felt moments. I loved every page of it. I recommend to contemporary romance lovers! Because if you're like me, you will LOVE it!
When I first started reading this book, I was somewhat reluctant and doubted I would like it all that much. But a few chapters through, and I was totally loving it! One of the most beautiful books ever read! I enjoyed it so much! It made me cry, smile, giggle, chuckle, got me annoyed when either Kim or Mason acted stupidly, got me worried when they were stranded and sick during the rainstorm, got me angry and sad and annoyed when things between Kim and Mason didn't go well after the accident... I liked Kimberly a lot. A tough girl, passionate, brave, stubborn, sweet, determined, and with that touch of sarcasm that made me smile so often. A kickass heroine! At first, I didn't like Mason very much, instead. He mostly treated her bad and was a jerk. It all changed the night of the accident. Then I got to know some of his traits that I liked. And he was good for Kim. Until something-I-can't-tell-you happened and he got back being a jerk again. But the eding surprised me and pleased me. And there were some hot scenes in the cave... I thought I was going to burn! Wow! I immediately liked Rick too. A lot! He's a very nice guy and he cares a lot about Mason, Kim, all the kids and Kim's mom. Kim's mom, Kate, was okay. Just a tad bit selfish maybe, but a nice woman. Amy was so cheery and sunny and sweet and lovely! I liked her immediately too. And loved the way her friendship with Kim started out, it was like Friends At First Sight. Very sweet! Very different from Kim's friendship with Car. I don't know, I didn't see sparkles there. They were so different. I loved to see Kim and Amy laugh and get crazy together, instead. Brad and Dan were cool guys too. Very nice. Both of them. And real friends. Parker, Lyssa, Quinn, and some other kids I can't remember their names were also amazing. I'd like to read more about the characters of this book. I pretty much liked everyone. There was no hateful chick hitting on the good guy, no hateful guy hitting on our heroine. There were no villains in general. And for a change that was good. It goes straight to my "Favorites" shelf with a full 5 stars.
This is the first book I’ve read by Tiffany King and it sure won’t be my last :)
Her last summer before she leaves for college to do art, Kimberly (Kimmie/Kimbe/Beach Bunny) finds out that her father never abandoned her as she had been told by her hardworking (but forever lying) mother, he just never knew that she existed.
Feeling betrayed Kimberly cancels all her summer plans and goes from sunny California to frosty Colorado to spend time with her newly acquired father, where she meets Mason. And thus it begins. ‘It’ in this case not being I-love-yous and flowers at sight but instead something more like mixed feelings and harsh words. Mason (Greeky/Greek God) doesn’t want her there so Kimberly’s going to do all she can to prove him wrong and that a beach bunny can survive in cold temperatures.
I loved all of the characters in Unlikely Allies, but I have to say Amy was my favourite. She is such a bubbly and happy person it made me smile. As one of the ex-campers and being a foster kid she could have turned out to be cursing society for her luck, but instead she was making her life beautiful by looking out for others and moving on. I'm secretly (or now not so secretly?) wishing for a sequel about Amy.
I quite liked Kimberly’s strength of character, having soon adjusted of the idea of having a father she was determined to make him proud. Rather than succumbing to Mason’s criticisms of her work she worked harder, even though she already was not so self-confident.
Mason was put into foster care after becoming orphaned. Having seen his father’s reaction to his mother’s death he wanted nothing to do with love and especially not a city-girl like Kimberly. However unlikely the relationship, it does begin to slowly bloom in the dark. Not so much later, Mason pushes Kimberly away as he tries to come to terms with the changes life have to offer him. Ever accepting Kimberly waits. But will she ever become tired of waiting?
This was the second book I read of Tiffany King's. I have to say, the first I didn't like at all, but this was a complete 180 for me and it made me want to read more after I read this one. After I finished it, I proceeded to buy and read almost all of her other books.
There were definitely things about this book that I didn't love, like the way Mason treats Kimberly when she gets there and how mean he is to her for no reason over and over for a lot of the book. She did a great job of writing it though because I found myself really hating him for a lot of the time. I also didn't love how fast Kimberly went from hating him to liking/kissing him. I wanted her to be a little more sensible than that...or for there to be more of a reason for her to start liking him and then wanting to kiss him, not just because he was hot. But I did love the relationship Kimberly had with her dad, how it was awkward at first (because of her never knowing him growing up) and then how it grew and progressed. I really liked her art classes and the way she felt bonded with her students. I did like the way she described the accident and how they dealt with being lost for so long together trying to survive. It wasn't fluffed over and there were a few things that were pretty gross, but again were very believable for what happened to them. And though I didn't love what happened with the characters for the last 3/4 of the book and when the thing happens at the end, I was happy, but also thought maybe she (Kimberly) should have been a little more mad about the situation instead of just being so happy so quickly. It's hard to say exactly what I think about the situation without putting spoilers in here. But I do wish she would have given him a little bit more of a hard time for what he did instead of how she reacts to him. I guess I can see where she would have reacted the way she did, but it could have been a little longer with a little more resolve after the turmoil of the last couple of chapters. Even with that though, I really liked this story and read it really quickly.
I recieved this book as an ARC for review for The Indie Bookshelf blog. Let me first mention that I am not a YA reader, normally. I usually stick with contemporary romance or sometimes paranormal books. Having said that, i feel this book was very well done. Kimberly and Mason were both very likable characters and the tension between them was palpable and delicious.
I read this in just a couple of days and it was a definite page turner. I Felt so many emotions while reading that I thought it'd be fun to tell you about them without revealing too much about the plot:
There were moments where I:
cried....this happened several times...tears of joy, tears of concern, tears of frustration and tears of sadness gasped....more than once got chills on my arms---oh yeah, that happened smiled based on something sweet that took place or a gesture that was made sat up abruptly in order to give the book my FULL attention
I do have a few things that kept me from giving this book a full 5 stars. First, the ending....it felt slightly rushed to me. I don't want to giveaway what happens, but the last chapter was lacking for me....yes, it still made me cry and smile, BUT I think a little more dialogue and a little more tension could have made it perfect.
Some of the dialogue, for me, didn't sound like how I would imagine teenagers speaking. Then again, please take that with a grain of salt as I am not normally a YA reader.
There were two characters introduced towards the end of the book that I would like to have known more about.....they deserved a few more chapters, I believe...as they really helped Kimberly during her time of need.
I'd like to end with my very favorite quote of the book. One that made me swoon, and ironically it was delivered by Kimberly, not Mason.
"If this isn't what love feels like, than I'll keep this instead."---gorgeous and it was the absolute perfect line for that moment in the book.
Unlikely Allies is a short, easy read with nothing out of ordinary writing. I don’t have anything bad to say nor do I have anything great to say about this book, I guess I am just indifferent.
Kimberly is from California and it’s the summer before she goes to college, her mom just told Kimberly who her father is. Angry Kimberly finds her dad and plans to spend her summer with him and she soon realizes her father runs a camp in the middle of woods for unfit teens. Kimberly meets Mason. Mason was adopted by her father years earlier. Almost everyone, including Kimberly’s father warms to her except for Mason and she doesn’t understand why.
I really liked the beginning of the book. I like how Kimberly is experiencing new things and you are along for the ride. I also like how the relationship between Kimberly and Dad and camp friends is smooth. The tension between Kimberly and Mason is great; it’s makes for a great read.
The book starts going downhill when we start to see the attraction from Mason to Kimberly. I blame the shortness in the book in not following through with building up the characters. I felt like the beginning had great flow, but then towards the end, there were a lot of things going on and all these new emotions were coming out of nowhere and it made it a hard to believe read.
The dialogue between Kimberly and Mason towards the middle-end of the book was just too typical and a bit juvenile. The teasing could have been written better. I feel like Mason and Kimberly’s relationship wasn’t built up properly and it fell flat.
Overall the story line is good, I like the part about the camp, the woods and even the ending. I think I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if there was an additional 200 pages and more if it about building the relationship between the two characters.
If you want a light easy read, this book is for you.
This was such an enjoyable read. I love it when a book can get right to the point, but still give you a good background. Tiffany King did just this with ‘Unlikely Allies’.
The main female character, Kimberly, changes her summer plans the instant she finds out about the father she never knew she had. She heads from sunny California to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to meet Rick, her father, and to help out at his camp for foster children. She is out of her element and, at times, unsure of herself. Yet, she is determined to show she can rise to any challenge. The first and biggest challenge turns out to be the Greek-God-like Mason. He is unbelievably hot and Kimberly is immediately smitten…and then he opens his mouth. He has nothing but ill words and a sour attitude for Kimberly and she has no idea why. One thing is true; there is a thin line between love and hate.
I loved all the characters in this story and they were all developed quite well. The chemistry was explosive between Mason and Kimberly (I swear my Kindle was smoking). The descriptiveness in this story was amazing! I swear I was right there in the mountains with Kimberly and Mason and felt all the cold and pain they were experiencing. I laughed and I cried and I got down right angry at times. I love a book that can evoke that much emotion from me. The one complaint I have is that I wanted more. I couldn’t get enough of Kimberly and Mason and I would have loved to see their reunion lengthened at the end. I also would’ve liked to learn more about Kimberly’s parent’s reunion and romance rekindling. Overall, this was great book and I feel privileged to have been able to read it and write this review. I highly recommend it to any romance fan.
Imagine you are 18, just graduated high school, and find out that your Mom has been lying to you for your ENTIRE life! This is exactly what happens to Kimberly in Unlikely Allies by Tiffany King.
Kimberly has always had a great relationship with her Mom. That is until she finds out she has lied about her father her entire life. Not only does she know she has a father, but he also wants to be a part of her life as well. She decides to leave sunny California for Colorado. Her father, Rick, runs Camp Unlikely Allies for foster children. This is def not Kimberly’s cup of tea! Not only is she in charge of campers, but she also has to deal with Mason…. aka “Greeky.” One evening, Alyssa, a camper runs away. With this event, everyone is forced to look for her. What will happen when Kimberly and Mason have to search the mountains for her?
I have to say that Tiffany King is a FABULOUS author! If you haven’t read a book of hers, GO GET ONE!!!!!! (I’d recommend Miss Me Not for starters!) She didn’t let me done on this book as well.
This book kept me on my toes. I didn’t know what was going to happen to the characters. There was so much emotion in this book… anger, hurt, love, unconditional love, heartache, faith, and hope.
I love how this book was so real. I loved the basis of Camp Unlikely Allies…. more than likely because I deal with children that sometimes don’t have the best home life. To see Kimberly so out of her element and make connections made me smile. That is what life is about… relationships. Each person should try and connect to each person they meet. Just remember you may be the only positive interaction they have each day!
WIth all of that said, I def recommend Unlikely Allies. I only wish there was a book #2!
