Wildly imaginative, unique, and creative, Under Current sticks out from other romances I’ve read. The exploration of Japanese legends and traditions was exciting. I enjoyed the glimpse into it Ms. Renquist gave us.

Trapped inside a day spa due to his ability to bring luck and good fortune, Hotsuma, has become a water spirit unable to do anything more than exist on the fringe of society. After centuries of imprisonment, a miracle happens. The wards that bind him are weakened by a visitor whose wandered into the wrong area. Hotsuma is a complex mix of emotions. Vulnerable, overwhelmed, and angered he runs a gamut of emotions. I admired his old world sense of protectiveness, and wit.

Employed at the rival spa Voda, LuLu is at the popular hot springs to discover their secret recipe for success. What she unearths is way above her pay grade. I loved how clever, honorable, and sassy LuLu was. I felt like a co-conspirator along for the adventure. Her ability to see past Hotsuma’s translucent form to the man beneath spoke volumes about her and set up one hell of a love story. Talk about overcoming all obstacles.

This short story packs a punch, takes many unexpected turns, and might set your underwear on fire with the sex scenes.
