I read this book with Emmalyn because the subject matter was deep. I'm so glad I did because I learned so much. It tells the story of the author, who is a refuge from Somalia. The graphic novel format makes it easier for young adults to process.
Omar and his brother, Hassan, get separated from their mother during war, they are moved to a refugee camp in Kenya and have been waiting for years to get sent to America.
“When the Stars are Scattered” is a great book with so much emotion and heart
The graphic novel, “When the Stars are Scattered,” by Victoria Jamison and Omar Mohamed is very good and is filled with emotion and love. This story is about two kids who left their family in Solmania because a war broke out, they then had to move to Dadaab, a refugee camp. In the book, we follow one of the kids, Omar in his life and struggles of living in a refugee camp.
The topic of this graphic novel is what it's like living in a refugee camp. The book is about how a kid Omar wants to leave the refugee camp but he learns to like it over time. It is known for getting the Schneider Family Book Award. A fact about one of its creators Omar Mohamed is that the book is based on him and his life story. According to the national book foundation, it says” Omar Mohamed spent his childhood at the Dadaab camp after his father was killed and he was separated from his mother in Somalia. He devoted everything to taking care of his younger brother, Hassan, and to pursue his education.” The type of person who knows about this topic is people who have also lived in refugee camps in Kenya or people who have visited refugee camps in Kenya The genre or category of this topic is biography.
I believe this was the best book ever because the book has so much emotion and heart that made me want to keep reading. I consider the emotions expressed to have worked because it shows how the characters feel and that is something that people can relate to. One positive is that you can truly see what it is like to live in a refugee camp and you get to know the ups and downs of living in one too.
Page # 103 ( yellow and pink) My screenshot is evidence that Omar cares about his younger brother and wants him to be ok. This is an example that shows that Omar has emotions and how he didn't want to leave his brother. It also shows how sad and worried he is about his brother. A detail of my book is that everyone in his community cares for and loves each other.
Page #243( yellow and pink) This shows emotion and how much he loves his family even if his guardian (Fatuma) isn't his real mom. To describe, this experience is like your drifting away to another world, and it's like you are Omar and you feel all the emotions that he does. The book also shows emotion through his scenes. For example when he feels ice for the first time in a while. Another example is when tastes bark tea and he says he dose’nt like it but it's better than being hungry. One last example is when he smalls the food and he likes the smell of it because he is so hungry.
I think that this was something great because this book changed the color of the background depending on the mood and feeling of Omar and others. This book was so great because it had so much detail and ways to see how people were feeling. I consider the whole book to have worked because there was so much that I could relate to and things that I think you could relate to too. One thing that I could see and know just from looking at the pages. One negative thing is the book has so many details that sometimes it is hard to track what's important and what's not. This screenshot is evidence that the lighting in the background changes depending on the mood of Omar. Also when Omar sees something good or is having fun he is happy and excited but the opposite is is is when he is sad or mad.
Page #203( yellow and pink) This is evidence that when Omar is happy the sun is shining bright and happy, but when he gets sad and upset the sun starts to set and the background color changes.
Page # 264 - 265( yellow and pink) This is evidence that when he is sad the sun is lower and when he becomes happy the light is shining bright and is a bright yellow. A detail about the book is that many things change depending on the mood of the characters. To describe, this experience is like floating away to another world. Another is that when they needed to have more space to draw and illustrate then they took away the gutter.
The purpose of When the stars are scattered is to educate people on what it's like to live in a refugee camp and also to entertain you. The audience for this topic is people who care because the purpose of the book is to bring awareness to this topic. The audience for this review is people who may want to read this book or may want to know more about this book. The impact of this story is to bring awareness to people in refugee camps. This book is also giving some profits to others in refugee camps.
Summary: The book "When the Stars are Scattered" is about two young little boys that are in a refugee camp. The book shows all of the struggles that the boys go through. In the book they do not have a mother, she is in a different location than her boys. Omar is the older brother and at such a young age he is expected to take cate of his younger brother Hassan. The book walks through all the things that they deal with. these things include starting school and the difficulties that come along with that, friends/family, the struggle with the environment, and basic human necessities.
My thoughts: I honestly was not a big fan of this book. Most of it is based on my struggle to read graphic novels. I often get too distracted with the pictures and the other things that are going on in the book. Although, I do think that the content of the book is important. I was so unaware of how likely it is that we will at some point how refugee students in our classrooms. I think that this book could help them know that they are not alone, and there are so many people like them
The book I read was by Omar Hassan (the main character in the story) and Victoria Jamieson. It is such an incredibly written and illustrated story that follows the lives of two Somali boys in Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya. I was so moved by their story and the creators did an excellent job developing a narrative that is so rich in emotion, and highlights all the complex tensions and experiences of life at the camp. I would recommend this book to everyone from young children to old adults. It is a relatively quick read, and really keeps you focused the whole way through. So glad I came across this book through a course I’ve been taking on Global Migration & Education.
The Stars Are Scattered is a super hope-preaching book. This books will make you relate in the most awkward ways but make you cry by the story. The characters are just perfecto with his brother finding his money his younger brother looking for family not money, with heartbreaking journeys with the problems they will face and epic illustrations. Will they reach Europe at last? And if they do, will they meet each other..?
I really enjoyed this book. There were so many good things to learn from it. Once again after reading about refugees I want to help them more than I think is possible. But as long as I can try I will continue to try and help them. I loved how it was written in graphic novel form. My daughter and I talked about it for a long time.
"You just try your best and God will find way to help you when you need it." "May you blessings be as great as the grains of sand in th desert and the stars in the sky."
To reread if I have the physical copy of the book: Ch 17. A Poem of Stars by Miriam. It speaks to the common yet unique experiences of a refugee.
Overall i think this is a pretty dubski book. The content and perspectives were really interesting and its all from a great source because the author is writing about his own experience in refugee camps in Kenya the way Omar feels about the UN and many other things is really interesting and id reccomend this book for evryone because it really gives you perspective.
Wow, this is a must read. This will stay with me for awhile and leaves a gift of better understanding of the refugee crisis with a story. It follows two Somali brothers growing up in a refugee camp in Kenya — I learned so much. Beautifully rendered and illustrated. Heartbreaking, honest and somehow hopeful. Quick read - finished in a few hours.
Although this book is a graphic novel, it showcases complicated topics such as death and war in a way that isn't seen as offensive or to violent. As its based on a true story, the author does a great job showcasing the struggles of the main characters family in a refugee camp while also painting a picture of the environment and the hardships it comes with.
Really great use of the graphic novel format. An important read that I hope reaches many. “Refugee” and even “immigrant” can feel so abstract and the descriptions of everyday life and the beautiful illustrations hopefully make those concepts much more concrete.
I read the graphic novel version, but the book was about about growing up in a refugee camp. When the stars are scattered gives a visual example of something that seems foreign to students. Not a lot of students would know what it's like being in Kenya, let alone a refugee camp with a sibling.
✨This. Was. Amazing. I can’t express how this made me feel. The story is so deep and moving and taught me so much. And when I found out it was a true story? Wow. That shocked me that someone would have to go through that. Highly recommend this ✨
I loved the book The Stars are Scattered because it was so interesting and if you needed to stop reading you still want to read it because it was so interesting.
