As Little Missington's first Christmas baby in fifty years and the daughter of 'Christmas When You Like It' party-planners, Holly West has been surrounded by the holiday spirit since birth. Trouble is, she's not exactly filled with festive cheer. In fact, Holly can't wait to ditch the tinsel and Santa suits for champagne and celebs, and become a party-planner to the stars.
When British film star Dean Layton hires her parents' company to throw his holiday bash in Manhattan, Holly jumps at the chance to help, confident she can handle a little Christmas in exchange for access to Dean's exclusive world.
But New York and Dean's over-the-top demands are more than Holly bargained for. Can Holly deck the halls and make it a party to be proud of, or will this Christmas be one she'll never forget . . . even if she wants to?

I would have given this book another star but because I felt it was missing a certain resolution at the end I had to give it a 3. I got this novella not expecting much to be honest. The only other Christmas theme book I've read was a bit of a let down. So this book was my last attempt at reading a Christmas book - notice I said was!?
I'm trying my best to get into the Christmas spirit - I know, I know, it's only November - and it's not like I put up decorations before December. But as I'm in Australia before heading home for Xmas and it's summer here, I'm attempting to evoke the spirit of Christmas....Which is pretty difficult when the suns blazing outside, it's boiling hot and I'm wearing a strappy summer dress! However this book succeeded into fooling me it was snowy and cold outside as it really did have a great Christmassy feel to it. I can almost feel the stinging cold wind hitting my cheeks and the need to grab some winter Woolies from the wardrobe and a mug of steaming hot chocolate topped with marshmallows.
The story is about a girl, Holly, who's parents own a Christmas themed party planning company in a small village in England. However Holly is 22, has just finished college and has ambitions to have a career throwing star studded glamorous parties for celebrities. When she gets the opportunity to head to New York and organise a Christmas party for a British celeb living there she jumps at the chance. I can't say much more without spoiling it, apart from she meets a guy and there's a sweet moral to the story. Which I really understand myself being so far from home with Christmas almost in sight. I'd recommend this book to anyone. It's a perfect Christmas read as it really feels like Christmas when you read it and it's a nice light easy read for when you just want to relax inbeteeeen dashing about christmas shopping, wrapping presents, Christmas parties, baking mince pies and Christmas cake etc. The only issue I have with the story is it's too short and i wanted to learn more about the characters. I think I may now have to delve further into Tallis others books to see what else she has written.
I bought Mistletoe in Manhattan this morning and couldn't wait to start reading it - so much so that I devoured it in one sitting! I loved 22-year old Holly and was carried along with her as she decides what's really important to her. Talli Roland has a wonderful knack for packing great characters into her page turners, and this one has definitely put me in the Christmas spirit.
Working for her parent’s ‘Christmas When You Like It’ party-planning company, Holly West wants more for herself. She wants to be a successful party-planner with only the most wealthiest and famous as her clients. However, life in Little Missington in the UK is not going to get her there.
She is more than thrilled when she is offered the chance of a lifetime – a British celebrity, Dean Layton, in New York wants to hire her to plan a British-themed Christmas party. She’s sure this will be the start of something big. Promising to return to the UK to spend Christmas with her parents, Holly jumps on the first plane to the US.
Things aren’t as easy as she’d hoped. Dean’s assistant obviously doesn’t want Holly to succeed and is constantly throwing obstacles in her way. To make things even more difficult, Holly has no connections in New York and has no idea where to turn for help. Fortunately, the hotel’s sexy bartender, Alex, is willing to give Holly all the help she needs.
When Dean suddenly demands that Holly plan an “after Christmas” party, too, Holly fears that she won’t make it home in time for her own Christmas celebration.
This is a novella for the holidays. It’s cute, but I think this could have worked better as a full length book. There was no time to explore any real romance for Holly. There were hints, but not much more than that. I even hesitate to call this a romance. I guess I just wanted more in the story, but that’s what happens with novellas, there just isn’t more.
I would read another book by this author as I think she’s good at writing chick lit and her book reminds me of the “Shopaholic” series by Sophie Kinsella. I checked out Talli Roland’s backlist and she has some full length books too. I’ll give them a try.
As someone who spends the majority of the year away from my family, as someone who was reading this from the warm and cosy comfort of my family home during the Christmas holidays, I must say Talli Roland chose her main theme well. In a pop-culture over-saturated with romantic mishaps and happily ever afters, it's both refreshing and heart-warming to watch the Hot Guy take a back seat and focus on the importance of family.
I'm not a great fan of Christmas books ,with the exception of Dickens, and the fact that I was given it by a friend, usually the kiss of death, but I was seeing her soon and knew she would ask how I liked the book. So after putting it off for another few days I eventually sat down and read it and to my surprise I really enjoyed it. It had good well rounded characters and a strong storyline. I must remember not to automatically put "you-must-reads" in the darkest corner.
Hey, how are you doing? I went through your book, and it is so good and amazing. Keep it up, I just discovered something about your book which will benefit you and help your book reach a higher place
Short, sweet, schmaltzy Christmas tale with a ridiculous storyline about a British Christmas party planner getting a last minute job organising a celebrity bash in New York.
A great Holiday book about finding out what’s important in life. Not a romance per se but a great book that shows us how easily, we can lose track of what is important.
Mistletoe in Manhattan is a novella of 20,000 words, and also gives readers a sneak peek of Talli Roland’s latest novel The Pollyanna Plan, due out in late November.
I love Talli Roland’s novels. She’s an amazing writer and anyone who brings out two novels a year plus a novella makes me a happy reader. Her most recent novella is Mistletoe in Manhattan and is a nice little read in preparation for Talli’s next full-length novel, The Pollyanna Plan, which is out in a couple of weeks. (Can I get a woo-hoo?)
Holly West is Little Missington’s first Christmas baby in years, and her life is full to bursting with all things Christmassy, especially as her parents run a company specialising in bringing Christmas parties to the masses. So when Holly gets the chance to go to Manhattan to help Dean Layton, famous actor, throw a big celebrity Christmas bash, Holly jumps at the chance, but will being in Manhattan and being around celebrities really be all Holly’s ever wished for, and will she make it back home to Little Missington in time for Christmas?
I thought Mistletoe in Manhattan was a really quick, cute read. For 77p you really can’t go wrong, especially as I paid a whopping £1.99 for Paige Toon’s Christmas novella that was miles shorter than Mistletoe in Manhattan, proving that publishers really do sometimes jack up the prices of novellas. I loved that the novel was set in New York. I adore New York. I have a picture of New York above my desk on my wall and one day I will go there, and see all the sights and shops New York has to offer. You cannot beat a book set in New York. I thought Holly’s job as a party planner was really great and interesting reading. Party planning is (surprisingly) not something you come across a lot in Chick Lit and it’s such an interesting and enjoyable topic. Mostly, though, what I loved about the novella was Holly meeting Alex, the barman. I loved Alex, the barman. I wanted a full length novel of Alex, I’m not joking, I was totally hooked on him.
I thoroughly enjoyed Mistletoe in Manhattan. It’s a wonderfully quick read and it was actually the perfect read for me as, at the moment, work is so super busy that I just don’t have time to read something that’s 100,000 words long, so novella are a brilliant way to feel like you’re still reading books every day, and it’s just an excellent tool to keep you reading whilst busy because everyone has 10-20 minutes a day for a novella. I can’t wait for Roland’s next full length novel – and thankfully, I only have a matter of weeks to wait. She’s an author I always look forward to, and she’s one of the finest Chick Lit writers around and long may it continue.
Mistletoe in Manhattan is a different type of Christmas story. Instead of being a romance where two people fall in love and live happily ever after in this story we learn that Christmas is all about the family, though **slight spoilers** there is a bit of a love interest that doesn't really go anywhere. It is a bit unsatisfying as I would have like it to not be there, or maybe have a follow up book or something. Oh well, it was still a fun holiday read.
Holly works for her family's Christmas party planning business. She want to break away a bit and do more parties, not just Christmas parties. She is getting tired of all the holiday things all the time. When a British film star wants to have a British Christmas party last minute in New York he hires Holly to handle it for him. She flies from her small hometown to Manhattan to plan the party that will hopefully help her family's business grow and expand across the pond.
Once Holly arrives in New York things don't go exactly as she planned. There is a lady who is not too thrilled to have Holly planning the party who pretty much is useless since she wants to see Holly fail. There are the extras that are added after she already planned most of the party that make it so she can't catch her original flight out which would have had her home on Christmas Eve. There is just a lot that Holly didn't realize, the way these people do business and run their lives is not like what she is used to. Really it makes me glad I don't have to deal with famous people.
Through all of this Holly has the help of the friendly bartender at her hotel bar. He helps her figure out where to get everything she needs and helps her explore New York a bit as well. He also helps Holly realize that if she can spend Christmas with her family she should. She shouldn't be one of those people who puts work first.
Overall it was a good read, but the slight romantic interest which didn't really do much left me wanting more, or less. Still I enjoyed the story. It had just enough holiday fun for me.
This is a pretty predictable light read that is meant as a nice little holiday story to quickly fly through during an otherwise very hectic time of year. My condensed thoughts are that it's a cute story. A one-sitting read to get through between other books. However, it's very far from perfect and there are a few small issues that readers will easily pick up on if they are doing more than just casually reading through. Right away Holly is a contradictory character. On the one hand she thinks she is ready for higher level clients, yet she has no idea how to organize things or get her bearings. She is frazzled beyond the point of being believable and yet, she thinks she's the professional member of the family business. Her lack or preparation is painful to read about if you try to analyze it and she trusts a random stranger with an event she makes a very big deal about pointing out her career depends on to go well. She is clueless about things, yet is annoyed her mother doesn't know the very things she was clueless about not a few paragraphs earlier. She knows Alex for less than a week and yet is surprised that there are details about him she doesn't know. Elsa's character pushes the mean girl generic qualities too much. I find it hard to believe an A-list celebrity assistant wouldn't realize that if her boss's party goes badly, she looks bad, not just the party planners. She's the one who hired the people to do the work, after all. Alex is supposed to be the ultimate good guy which directly contradicts the way he judges Holly for making a choice career wise that is the entire reason she is in America at all...also, he's known her for a matter of days! The ending was rushed and tried to tie it all together and end all the conflicts, but there must be repercussions for some of the actions the characters took. In the end, it's a free book, only about 60 pages, so if you want a quick holiday read, go for it...but I'm sure there are better Christmas stories out there.
Mistletoe in Manhattan begins with the reader’s introduction to Holly and how she feels about graduating, her dreams … and how she’s back where she began, working for her parents business ‘Christmas When You Like It’.
On returning home feeling desolate after yet another Christmas party, she checks the answering machine. Having recently sent out a batch of CVs, she’s hoping the message will be the one to start her on the path of following her dream. It’s a message from Elsa, Dean Layton’s PA … and Holly takes on the task of arranging a British Christmas for him in Manhattan.
Talli’s 2012 Christmas novella has everything a reader needs in a story. We have a moral with lead character Holly trying to make her way in the world and putting her dreams above everything else until she experiences something in Manhattan; conflict with Dean’s PA Elsa who is waiting for Holly to fail; romance with the gorgeous Alex (the barman in Holly’s Manhattan hotel) who is a key character for opening her eyes to another side of Manhattan; sub-plots and secondary characters.
My favourite scene has to be at the soup kitchen’s Christmas party with the wilted mistletoe : ) I’m a softie at heart!
Is co-ordinating parties for celebs all Holly thought it would be? Does she realise what is important in her life before she lets down those that matter? You’ll have to get your own copy to find out …
Roland’s writing style and her humour carry us along with Holly on her Manhattan adventure and I have no hesitation in recommending Mistletoe in Manhattan.
Mistletoe In Manhattan is the story of Holly West, a young woman has been surrounded by Christmas her entire life and is looking for a change. Born on Christmas Day to Christmas party-planner parents, Holly hoped for much more in her life than returning home and helping her parents with their party-planning business. She is ecstatic when an opportunity comes her way to plan a Christmas party for Dean Layton, a British celebrity living New York. Arriving in Manhattan, Holly discovers that party-planning for a celebrity isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Dean’s assistant is less than helpful and appears to want Holly to fail miserably. Dean’s Christmas party soon turns into an after-party that Holly is also expected to organize and launch. The problem is if Holly stays to oversee the after-party, she will miss spending Christmas with her parents back in England. The one bright spot in Holly’s world is Alex, the cute bartender at the hotel Holly is staying at.
I liked this story, but it was too short for any closure on what happens to Holly, Alex, or Dean. There were too many loose ends that left me unsatisfied. If you are in the mood for a Christmas themed story, but don’t have a lot of free time to spend reading a full-length novel, this book may be the perfect choice. Though this book left me with more questions than answers, I enjoyed the author’s voice and will be looking for more of her work.
I am coming to the end of my Festive reads ( is this bad for November!) Next on my list was Mistletoe in Manhattan by Talli Roland, I have read all of Talli’s previous books and loved all of them they are easy reads with loveable heroines so I was looking forward to starting this one.
Our Heroine this time is Holly West and she is a modern day girl but she lacks the festive spirit that her parents have. Holly’s parents run a Christmas Party Planning company and Holly works for them, when a call comes through offering a chance to organise a Christmas themed party for a celebrity Holly sees this as a big break and snaps up the job and gets ready to travel to Manhattan to start the planning alone. Will Holly’s efforts pay off?
Mistletoe in Manhattan is a great short read that will get you in the festive mood whilst travelling home from work on these cold dark evenings. I devoured this book in under 2 hours, it was an easy read that was fun and festive and delivers an important message not to forget what Christmas is really about. I am not a fan of short stories I can only actually think of one that I previously enjoyed, so I was glad that Talli managed to add to my little list!
Looking for a little festive fun that will warm your wintry nights this Christmas then Mistletoe in Manhattan is the perfect little treat for you.
Holly West lives in the tiny village of Little Missington, she works with her parents in their small party planning business in the only all-round all-the time planners in the UK. Holly dreams of landing her dream job of working for the more prestigious party planners, the big league ones.
Holly thinks she has been given the opportunity to do this, when she is given the chance of organising a traditional British Christmas party for celebrity Dean Layton one of the UK’s biggest TV stars. The party is to be held in Manhattan. This is just what Holly as dreamed of. Could this be Holly’s chance to escape her country bumpkin existence and open the door for her to enter the world of the big league of party planning?
Once again we are heading to that most wonderful time of year, the build up to Christmas and what better way can you choose to spend this time, than snuggling up with a fantastic Christmas story and this is the ideal book for doing just that. You can always rely on Talli Roland books to bring good cheer and for lively entertainment perfect for this time of year. This is a delightful Christmas story filled with jolly good humour and a touching tale too. Mistletoe in Manhattan is an Unputdownable read that can easily be read in one sitting.
I've read several of Talli's books now and have enjoyed them very much. I really like her writing style, and how the storylines are realistic, funny and often sweet. Mistletoe in Manhattan is no exception.
Holly West is currently helping out at her parents' party-planning company. She really wants to get out, though, and run her own high-flying company, but it's not as simple as that. So when an opportunity comes her way to plan a celebrity party in New York, she jumps at the chance. It could be her big break.
On arriving in New York, she quickly runs into trouble when she discovers that the celebrity - Dean Layton - has a very unpleasant assistant who has no intention of helping Holly out. Luckily, the barman in the hotel she's working in is much more helpful, and Holly is soon putting together the party of the year. Sadly, more problems are thrown at her, and she worries she may not be home in time for her family Christmas - which is also her birthday. Will she stick out the job until the end, or is family more important?
Overall, I found this to be another cracking read from Talli Roland. I admit to liking her novel length stuff best, but that's just because I want more of that engaging, easy to read, fun writing style! More please!!
I received a copy of Mistletoe in Manhattan by Talli Roland in exchange for an honest review.
This was a super cute novella that put me right in the holiday mood. Holly West is the daughter of Christmas party-planners, but she doesn’t seem to bring the same cheer and festive spirit as her parents. In fact, quite the opposite. When Holly gets an offer to travel across the pond and throw a British-themed party for TV star Dean Layton in Manhattan, she thinks this could be the opportunity to open doors and get away from only planning Christmas parties. But with a snooty assistant and too many over-the-top requests from a B-list celebrity, Holly wonders if this is the life she truly wants. When a blooming romance finds bumpy ground, Holly also is forced to take a look at herself and what she really wants in life.
Sometimes I can struggle with novella’s, but I really enjoyed this one. It was a quick treat that I found sweet to read and left me wishing for more. I was surprised at how much I could connect with Holly in such a short time, and I recommend this cute novella for chick lit fans. There is also a sneak peak at Roland’s next full-length novel included – and The Pollyanna Plan is coming up on my to-read list!
This is the first of the Christmas books this year that I read wishing it would have been a full length book. This is exactly the type of story I like to read and the writing style I enjoy too.
We meet Holly, daughter of Christmas party planners, as she goes off to take on the job that could kick start her career instead of being stuck with her parents company waiting and waiting on that big break. She goes over to New York to start the preparations but being out her home country and her lack of local knowledge, plus a really bitchy PA, Holly seems to be facing the challenge of a lifetime.
I really liked and related to Holly straight away. I think a lot of readers will as there is something identifiable about grasping opportunities instead of floundering around waiting for life to happen for you. I really liked her determination to prove herself, especially when there are spanners thrown in the works.
Then there is handsome Alex, bartender at Holly's hotel and font of knowledge on all things local. What better about a Christmas feel good story than to have a lovely Christmas romance thrown in too?
Definitely a lovely, light-hearted read for Christmas time and it left me wanting to read more of Talli's other books if this is only a taster of her style.
This novella took me way longer to read than I'd initially planned when I'd chose it in the first place, 1)because I am already a fan of this author's work and 2)because it was a short and easy read and lastly 3)because I knew it would be engaging even before I started since Talli Roland hasn't let me down yet. But without a working bedside light (which turned out to be faulty wiring and not just a change of bulb) and with the nights drawing in faster than you can say Jack Frost, well, I was forced to use the damn overhead lighting which normally gives me a headache but for one thing, you can't get a headache when you read a story by Talli Roland so I was saved from this fate by the wonderful Christmas feel of the book and sweet moral message to the tale. It's about a young woman who has a dream job in mind to become a celeb party planner and escape her parent's world altogether, but at what cost? And is she willing to pay it? Read this feel-good, romantic Christmas story to find out more and you just might realize before it's too late what's truly important in your life too.
Holly is feeling a bit disheartened. She works with her parents as a party planner which she has done since leaving uni. She wants to make her own way and do her own thing. She gets a phone call which could mean her big break is about to happen. Will she abandon her family Christmas in the pursuit of happiness and is it really what she wants?
A really cute Christmas story. I read this short story in the space of a couple of hours, not sure whether that was because it was a short story or whether the writer hooked me again! I am a massive fan of this authors work and she has hit the mark again. I do seem to enjoy her full length novels slightly better than her shorter works though.
I really enjoyed the simplicity of the story and the messages behind it. It did kind of remind me of what Christmas is all about.
This is the perfect book to read while you are running Around doing your preparations for Christmas as it is completely full of Christmas spirit.
This review was originally posted on my blog, Ramblings of a Daydreamer. You can find it, and many more reviews at the blog.
Feeling a bit stuck working for her parents’ year-round Christmas party planning business, Holly has visions of grandeur when she’s hired to put on a big traditional English Christmas party for a British celebrity in New York City. This is her chance to get out of her small town, out of her elf costume, and make a name for herself.
While short, this charming novella packed a lot of fun between its digital pages. The story was simple and sweet, but the message behind it encompassed the true spirit of Christmas. I loved the little hint of romance, the obstacles Holly faced, and the lessons she learned. It was funny, touching, and overall a feel-good kind of story.
If you’re looking for a fast and sweet holiday read, or if you’re running around like a mad person getting ready for Christmas and need a little reminder about what the holidays are really about, I’d definitely recommend this book.
Holly and her parents are small-time party planners in England, but she would love to break into the world of huge, expensive celebrity parties. When Dean Layton, a British celebrity living in New York City, asks her to come to the Big Apple to organize a British-themed Christmas party for him, Holly believes it’s her big break.
In New York, Holly bumps heads with Dean’s aggravating personal assistant, Elsa. Dean is charming, but his demands are ridiculous, even impossible, yet Holly attempts to give him the Christmas party he desires. What makes the trip worth it is Alex, a bartender with a heart of gold whom Holly develops feelings for, even though she has to go back home soon. But with Dean’s persistent demands, she may not be home for the holidays as she expected. She has to decide if she’ll sacrifice family time for her career.
Holly and Alex’s relationship was very sweet. I also liked how Holly was torn between her ambitions of being a party planner and the ache to be with her family. This was a satisfying chick-lit novella.
I was a bit daunted at the thought of starting Christmas preparations, very much aware that the first of December is less than a week away. So I pushed the Christmas card list aside and settled down to read MISTLETOE IN MANHATTAN to recharge my batteries and get me into the Xmas mood. It proved to be the perfect antidote for a gloomy November day. This feel good Christmas story is about Helen, her family's party planning company and her dream of hitting the big time. A phone call brings her a step closer to realising that dream, but presents her with a dilemma. Is she ready to leave her roots behind and head for the bright lights of Manhattan to organise a party for celebrity Dean Layton? Or should she stay in her comfort zone and spend the rest of her life wondering - what if . . . Get out the hot chocolate, the marshmallows and your favourite comforter and snuggle down with this treat of a tale by Talli Roland
Another glittering cracker from the queen of feel good fiction Talli Roland. This novella is funny and speeds along nicely, like a nice cinnamon latte and a chat with a quirky friend. I devoured it and also adored the preview of The Pollyanna Plan, which is out later this month too!
Holly is fed up with Christmas, as her family are THE epitome of it, and even her birth was adorned with tinsel! Landing a big job in New York, she spies with her mince pies (groan, I know, bad joke) a chance to break free and 'carve' out a life of her very own...but when she gets what she wants, will she want it or will she realise it's not the glittering bauble she thought it was?
I love Roland's works and this novella has helped me get into the Christmas spirit, while realising what's important, and what's just life's frosting....
