Brigitte Bardot, Plein la vue

Rate this book

It's really a bad book. If I could I would haven given 0,2 of * .

-------

Biographies of movie stars can often be quite generic and written with such paucity of style that they’re embarrassingly bad and boring. This one isn’t extraordinarily written, but it benefits from two assets: first, the passion of the author for its subject, and her willingness to be as objective as possible. Second, the subject itself: Brigitte Bardot, who could well be the most famous French star of all times. She not only was a screen icon that burned bright all over the world, she also was (not necessarily because she wanted it) a woman whose fame, allure, loves, and carefree lifestyle literally changed the role and status of women in French society. There is a pre-Bardot era and a post-Bardot era. Her impact on the way French people looked at women, at the time, is as important as the one that Simone de Beauvoir’s books had. The surprise is the private BB that emerges through this portrait. Complex, at the same time fragile and powerful, egocentric yet generous, passionate yet often incapable of loving for a long time, Bardot, at the end, remains a mysterious, flawed, but interesting character, whose evolution suggests a kind of unhappiness and quest for a better life that always remained elusive. Her myth is unshakable, and as such, it keeps intriguing us. The woman behind it is hard to fathom and pinpoint. But what a woman.

i'm not a huge fun of biographies but i've decided to give this one a go
it was a bit chaotic for me,as if the author was telling the story to one of her friends that already know half the facts, few years forward - few years back a little too messy for my liking
and a lot of stories about people that i did not care for,i know they were a part of her life but do i really need all the details...
overall quite decent read, considering that i've only watched her movies and knew next to nothing about her personal life

I chose this book because I wanted to brush up on my French language skills and wanted some light but interesting reading. It was perfect for me. The vocabulary was varied, the expressions were modern and the content was absorbing. Before reading this book, I did not know much about Brigitte Bardot nor was I that familiar with her films. Now I understand the impact that she had on women of her generation and how she helped open the door to women's freedom to dress and behave as they liked and to own with pride their own sexuality. I highly recommend this book to anyone intrigued by the phenomena of Brigitte Bardot and why she had such a strong impact on European culture of the late 50s and 60s.

If I could, I would like to give this "book" - 4 stars. Nothing upsets me more than an exciting subject being treated poorly. This biography tells very little of BB and much more about the judgmental attitude, self righteous view, envy, misogyny and love/hate relationship of the author with her own mother than the quintaessencial French femme fatale.
As if not enough, the sintaxis of this "book" is very poor. Everything is bad. Everyone thinks so. This is what everybody says. See what I did here. Imagine. Just imagine. You. Reading +300 pages. Of opinions. And gossip. And judgmental remarks. And very little information about BB. All in very poorly written prose. And that's all, folks.

Horrible. No interest. It sounds like reading it from a woman in love with an image. We don't learn anything except that the picture is as we were told. I don't recommend it.
